Who Moves Where?

by Bassett on April 26th, 2008 at 5:19 pm

With drafting DE/OLB Vernon Gholston, the question now is …what happens to the Jets linebacking corps?  As I was down in the press room, Buttle made the point “the Jets play a hybrid 4-3.”

I agree but did they play a hybrid because the personnel dictated it in 2007?  With Jenkins Pace and now Gholston the team can go all out when if they want to play the 3-4, but they do have the ability to mix it up.  Right now, the team stands as follows.

DE Shaun Ellis
DT Kris Jenkins
DE Kenyon Coleman

OLB Bryan Thomas
OLB Calvin Pace
ILB David Harris

Vernon Gholston?

I think that there a lot of money tied up in the Jets linebackers, but this makes a formidible front seven. There’s got to be some moving around, and Eric Barton on the inside might be the first to lose out … what do you think?

Any projections for our 2nd round pick? QB Henne ?

  2. avatar Jay says:

id rather see Vernon line up across from Ellis personally…leave Barton at ILB with Harris…i like the pick, not my first choice, but Gholston has a high ceiling and solidifies the 3-4 – if we can land a CB like Brandon Flowers in Rd 2 and a Safety at some point your talking about one of the top 5 AFC defenses next year in my opinion – Happy Jet fan today :)

  3. avatar Mike G says:

I think the jets will line up ellis-jenkins-coleman
    with thomas-harris-pace-gholsten.
what about David Bowens? he played well at the end of last year. I guess Eric Barton will be the odd man out. either way our front 7 looks real scray on paper. lets hope for the best. I think the jets have to go offense in the 2nd, unless a real good player falls. we shall see…..

  4. avatar BIGmac says:

i see a jet defense im not worried to watch

  5. avatar Mike G says:

i agree bigmac and im very excited.

  6. avatar steviek says:

gholston was just a jr., has limited football experience and will likely just be a situational pass rusher in his rookie year.
it may be a bit much to expect more.

  7. avatar Mike G says:

steviek, isnt that wha twe want him to be? atleast for now, a 3rd down pass rusher, with pace and thomas playing more downs as fulltime olb’s

  8. avatar subwayfare says:

I agree with steviek. VG will likely play strictly rush scenarios initially. I also thought Bowens did some nice things at the end of the year. I think the pressure is on Bryan Thomas to wake up and duplicate his 06 success or he’ll soon be the odd man out.

  9. avatar RayD says:

The top WR’s are still on the board… hope we get one of them.

  10. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

bryan thomas would start inside with david harris what a lb. core!

  11. avatar Jay says:

i’d take a WR or CB…maybe even Tyrell Johnson, the Arkansas St safety in Rd 2 – PS: Is anyone else upset that ESPN is ruining the surprise by showing the draft picks reactions 5 minutes before the pick is announced? Show that to us afterward…

  12. avatar steviek says:

i was just saying in context of who’s starting and the expectation of being an every down player, rather than part of a down & distance substitution package.

his best role at first is probably to turn him loose and let him chase without a lot of other responsibilities.

if he starts out well, maybe it lights a little fire under b.thomas.

  13. avatar steviek says:

from what i read, dont get your hopes on wr in 2. they saw value with the 2 picks in 4, unless someone they have high on their board is there. isnt looking like many teams have these wr’s very high.

i’m guessing the cb from vtech flowers in 2 if he’s still there.

  14. avatar Jay says:

can we trade Bryan Thomas and a pick for like a late 3rd rounder and get Jermichael Finley?

  15. avatar Ryan says:

i dont like Kenyon Coleman as our starting DE, He should be a Rotational player at best.

  16. avatar Damian says:

no way guys, gholston and pace on the outside. the fo knows bt is a joke, and are now moving forward with him and bowens as backups.

  17. avatar ramble914 says:

Kenyon Coleman had the most tackles of any DE last year. He’s a beast against the run.

  18. avatar Richard Caster says:

Would love to see a speedy receiver in Round 2

  19. avatar C$ says:

Bryan Thomas can not play inside

  20. avatar pound4pound says:

Thru pick 28, here are the on-the-board guys I’m most hoping for the Jets at 36:

    Brohm
    D Thomas
    Henne
    B Flowers
    C Lofton
    Q Groves
    T Porter

  21. avatar RayD says:

ut oh … we just traded up >>>

  22. avatar RayD says:

    I bet you it’s a Brohm

  23. avatar matt says:

    omg awful pick

  24. avatar Jay says:

I wouldnt say awful…but can a guy get Brandon Flowers/Tyrell Johnson or WR? I dont know about that one guys…Maybe they expect to trade/release Baker?

  25. avatar RayD says:

sweet …. a playmaker at TE. I love the pick.

    best player on the board

  26. avatar steve says:

Devin thomas was the right pick here im disapointed

  27. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

the jets would trade baker for a 2nd or 3rd and get the best cb. on the board

  28. avatar jaypeezee says:

when do the jets pick again ?

  29. avatar DSmizzle says:

Meh, not disappointed in the value of the pick but thats primarily because (as RayD mentioned) this guy is fast and can “make plays”… we’ll see.

  30. avatar jaypeezee says:

do we have a 3rd ? no one is gonna give up a 2nd or 3rd for baker ru crazy ?

  31. avatar RK says:

Do the Jets have 2 #4′s now or 1 after this trade?

  32. avatar Damian says:

playmaker…not unhappy…..obviuosly skeptical cause of our past and te’s

  33. avatar RK says:

The only question is did they need to move up 6 spots for him? Would he not have been there when they selected in the top of round 2? I assume thy had some info, but you gotta wonder

  34. avatar Jay says:

I think they’ll wait until Rd. 4 now to take a CB like Tyvon Branch from UCONN

  35. avatar jvsvn says:

The Jets needed to come out of this draft with a playmaker on offense. A TE is fine if the guy is a player.

  36. avatar steviek says:

if nothing else, they definitely got 2 big time athletes. keller is 240+ and ran a 4.5. he’s not one to line up tight and block.

  37. avatar jaypeezee says:

i say take whatever picks it takes to get back into 2nd ,and draft the best wr available and call it a draft . then just look at the undrafed for other needs.

  38. avatar RayD says:

Our next pick is in the 4th round (tomorrow) 102. Unless we make another trade ??

  39. avatar Jay says:

Bryan Thomas and Chris Baker for trade bait…we still have to work to do in this draft guys we could use some more picks

  40. avatar Harlan Lachman says:

I hate it when someone quotes misleading stats. Kenyon Coleman s_cked. He had tackles 5-10 yards downfield. He was pushed out so many times it looked like he was part of the offensive game plan.

    harlan

  41. avatar dakar says:

yeah maybe gholston will be used on situational pass rushs…or maybe he’ll get worked in and take over by mid-season…or maybe he’ll hit the turf running like david harris and be an instent star…or maybe he’ll have a solid year like revis…however gholston works out for us i love the fact we drafted him…just my thoughts…

  42. avatar alex says:

how about baker, bryan thomas and/or one of our receivers for the Cardinals Boldin

  43. avatar john says:

    alex,

theres no way arz is dumb enough to do that

  44. avatar alex says:

they can use a 3/4 olb (BT), Boldin wants out, we send off coles or cotchery (good compliments to fitzgerald), toss in baker and maybe a draft pick for next year. we have given up players (Vilma, Kendal, Robertson, etc) for absolutely nothing and seen other teams make good trades. If Boldin puts the squeeze on them, they may not be happy to get something. I think its worth the effort.

  45. avatar alex says:

We may still draft a big DT and move him to DE or just draft a DE. I would like to see us pick up Red Bryant and see if he can make that shift.
