With the 30th Pick …

by Bassett on April 26th, 2008 at 6:42 pm

The Jets select Dustin Keller of Purdue.

The New York Jets traded up from No. 36 overall to No. 30 overall to select tight end Dustin Keller out of Purdue.

Keller becomes the Jets fourth tight end drafted in the first-round since 1992. Johnny Mitchell, Kyle Brady, Anthony Becht…Dustin Keller. The only reasoning behind this would be the fact that starting tight end Chris Baker has left the team because he’s upset over his contract. The Jets may feel the need to upgrade the tight end position in hopes of adding another playmaker.

Let’s face it the Jets have a spotty history with this position, Dustin Keller is … dare I say … a “speed merchant,” so won’t be your typical Tight End. At 6’3″ 242 pounds and a 4.4 / 4.5 40 yard dash he’s a guy that the team will split out and can be the red zone target that everyone is looking for.

The fact that he’s a tight end is very intriguing, even though he’s a converted WR, he plays TE. When it times to pay him though (down the road in years 4-5) we’ll see how that works.

Gary Grund asked Anthony on GFB if the Jets would trade Baker … I can totally see that, as the team now has Baker, Franks and Keller. Unless they just consider Keller at WR … I wouldn’t be surprised to see some interest in Baker from other teams.

Dont mind picking keller, HATE having to give up a 4th rounder to do it

  2. avatar holdpat says:

Really? We needed to give up a 4th to move up 7 spots to get Keller?

    Why does that make sense?

Over/under on pts scored in ’08 remains at 180

  3. avatar EddieC says:

why not grab the best wide reciever in the draft? we have two TE’s. we need the deep, physical threat

and the NYJ draft woes continue

  4. avatar My Pet Goat says:

I wanted a big target WR. This’ll do.

  5. avatar Chris B says:

Jets history for reaching at TE continues. Amazing that they could have stood pat and maybe got the same guy, a top WR, Henne or Brohm, and kept their 2nd 4th round pick. What a blunder, but typical for a NYJ draft.

  6. avatar JP says:

Why not rework the contract with a guy who’s been on the rise instead of investing into a guy who has no cred at all? And I agree — where’s the deep threat? Where are the receivers? Oh, crap — another season and dink and dunk.

  7. avatar Big Bad Bob says:

I really don’t understand picking a tight end who will play a slot style reciever, when the best 3 recievers are still on the board. they should have stayed put and waited to se who came to them. This better pan out, or this will easily turn into one of the JETS Draft blunders. If Devin Thomas or Limas Sweed turns into something special, this will blow up in their faces.

  8. avatar steviek says:

they obviously believed he was going off the board.
maybe to the giants with trading shockey?

baker will be on the team. a different type of player.
more of the flexibility thing. show double te’s & single or 2 rb’s and throw to the mismatch, show single te then split keller wide, etc., etc.

  9. avatar RayD says:

Giants would have grabbed him …. Seems like Baker is a gonner

  10. avatar C$ says:

not crazy about this..did they have to move up to get this guy? good WR’s, Qb’s, CB’s were likely available if they stayed put. I guess they are releasing baker.

  11. avatar MW says:

Is Stuckey from last year a deep threat?

  12. avatar billvv says:

Maybe they know something about Baker we don’t know. Maybe he gets traded as he wishes.

  13. avatar RayD says:

    Hopefully we’re offered a 3rd and 4th for Baker …

  14. avatar holdpat says:

maybe they know something we don’t…

honestly, why is it that every year at this time we come back to that refrain?

  15. avatar neil herschkowitz says:

OK…we’re doing great. No move for McFadden or Ryan, another undersized DE to move to OLB to join the 2 we already have that fit that description, and a trade up for a TE when we can’ t pay Baker and just got Bubba in FA.

A tight end? Why not buy some QB insurance with Bohem, or look for a CB or a WR. Ghloston I can live with….maybe . Keller? Who is he? Smallish, and certainly fills no great need…a stretch to say the least.

  16. avatar Anthony Becht says:

We now have drafted the two combine freaks. If he ends up being a dallas clark type slot receiver this could work out, although i still think Devin Thomas made more sense here. I hope we have a trade worked out for Baker worth something or this is dumb. Looks like our offense will be very boring again.

  17. avatar billvv says:

Seems Keller was first a WR then a TE. High jumped 6’10″ in high school, that should bode well.

  18. avatar steviek says:

stuckey is small and quick, more of a slot guy.

no reason to dump baker. franks is the guy who would more likely be odd man out.

just off last year, they deserve the benefit of the doubt about trading up. mistakes are more likely to be made when you reach on need. its a cliche, but take best player on the board.

  19. avatar Reprocity says:

I like having Keller and Leon on the field at the same time and pick on the weaker LB!

  20. avatar mike says:

loved the first pick …HATE SECOND PICK….WHAT R THE JETS THINKING>>>NO GOOD REASON TO PICK A TE AGAIN….PAST HISTROY SUCKS>>>SO THEY CONTIUNE THE MISERY….

  21. avatar alex says:

    this was stupid!

My pet goat is right… this guy will do for a big target wide receiver and he will be a better option as a receiving TE

BUT WHAT WE GAVE UP TO MOVE UP SEVEN SPOTS, WITH THE DEPTH AT WIDE RECEIVER THAT WAS STILL ON THE BOARD, IS MOND BOGGLING, AND GIVEN THE FACT THAT THIS GUY COULD HAVE FALLEN TO US ANYWAY. I…

This was a major reach that is just going to end up on our teams draft blunder video tape.

If this doesn’t workout, the FO should be permanently barred from drafting TE’s in the first round.

Having completed my rant. As a die-hard fan, I am ready to return to blind optimism and loyalty. Welcome to the team Keller, I hope you break records and help bring us to a superbowl.
    Go Jets!

  22. avatar ramble914 says:

    Holdpat,

I haven’t come back to that refrain for the last two years, especially last year. This is so far a good draft, VG will be a monster on the outside, and Keller will do for the Jets what Tony Gonzalez does for KC, and that is exploit the middle of the field. Baker is not half the athlete that Keller is.

  23. avatar Reprocity says:

At least Johny Mitchell could block…some

  24. avatar alex says:

frustration typo: change mond to mind

  25. avatar steviek says:

because of picks made by 4 or 5 front offices ago, don’t pick another te. yeah, dig that logic!

  26. avatar Jay says:

Dustin Keller…a Marques Colston type? I like FINALLY having a legit Red-Zone target – I like the pick more and more as I think it over…I’d love to make one more trade today to grab a CB/WR/S though

  27. avatar cbiscuit says:

Devin Thomas with one year of play at the college level certainly was no lock at 30 or 36. Bottom line is this is a down year for WRs. This pick tells us the FO feels good about Smith, Stuckey and Clemens.

  28. avatar Harlan Lachman says:

While I hate this move, two picks for a TE? A TE? it is clear that the WR really stink. None in the first round, including by teams that need WR. The first three taken include the 11th (Avery) and 6th (the KState guy) ranked.

I think the Jints’ Philips pick (if we wanted to give up a #4) and the ILB taken soon after our original pick will prove to be more useful and productive NFL players.

This bozo better sit Baker’s and Franks’ asses on the bench with his tall WR production or it will rival some of the other TE reach wastes.

    harlan

  29. avatar holdpat says:

    ramble914,

the problem with last years draft, and (now) this years draft, was that we came out of it with 2 players. When, clearly, we need more than 2 players.

  30. avatar Joe says:

Coles, Cotchery, Stucky, Brad Smith at WR (deeper than you think…consider 2 years ago cothery and coles were among the elite in WR duos)

Keller is fast enough to exploit the middle of the defense. that opens up running lanes. Also he is a big target in the Red Zone.

At first I was against the pick, but after more consideration I like the pick.

Still need CB/S, WR, and RB.

Also theres a reason none of the WR went in the first round.

  31. avatar Chris B says:

It’s not that it’s a bad pick, per se. It is the fact that they Jets had to give up a 4th rounder that is frustrating. Heck for less than what they gave up for this guy, I bet they could have traded for Shockey. Just poor logic in my opinion and a bit of a panic move.

  32. avatar billvv says:

From Football’s Future: “Keller is an excellent receiving tight end. He is a very good athlete, with the quickness and speed to make things happen. He knows how to get open, and can get down the field to make plays. Keller has excellent hands and will catch anything near him, and can take a hit and hold on to the football.”

  33. avatar Jeff says:

I can sum up tazzelrik’s youtube video with one word…WOW! That dude is sick! Go JETS!!!

  34. avatar klecko71 says:

chris…u dont want shockey. the guy is a jerk who is always banged up, talented yes…but the drops??

this kid keller…get him in space…and its peace.

like the pick…alot of people arent so high on sweed or hardy b/c they didnt get picked yet did they?

  35. avatar ramble914 says:

    Holdpat,

Actually four players last year, two players who started immediately, and will be pro bowlers. We still have another 4th rounder and 5 -7 round picks. I think your critiizism is unfonded.

  36. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

dustin keller have antoinio gates written all over him he clearly better than any wr. in the draft thats why the jets didnt take none of them bum wr. period……….

  37. avatar Brian says:

Everyone is making so much noise about Devin Thomas but can someone tell me the difference between L. Cole, Cotchery, Stuckey and Devin Thomas.. Exactly…. They are all possesion recievers, which is why we took Keller. If you want to make a point about taking Sweed thats another story, he has the height and speed to be a deep threat but if we are not arguing Sweed, we need to stop this garbage about Devin Thomas

  38. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

    thank you brian enough said…

  39. avatar James in TN says:

2 bad picks . nuff said

  40. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

james you must be a titans fan???

  41. avatar Big Bad Bob says:

I don’t think he reminds me of either gates or gonalez, clarke maybe (but bigger and faster) . This kid is his own type of beast. I take everything I said earlier back. Can’t wait to see this guy when he gets the ball.

  42. avatar Damian says:

that video combined with the idea that he was originally a wr going to purdue makes me think the jets will use him all over the field. i like this pick the more i think about it. we have 4 wrs. we need a playmaker. we have 2 rbs, we didnt need mcfadden. gimme baker and keller. theres explosiveness.

  43. avatar jvsvn says:

It just seems obvious that they thought he is a better prospect than any of the WRs in this draft. A top flight TE creates more match up problems than a mediocre WR. Like last year, the Jets are willing to use their mid round picks to target a specific guy they really wanted. If it works out the same way, it will have been a good pick.

  44. avatar steve says:

we signed a decent te this offseason i dont think we even need this guy the best wr was still on the board why does it suck so much to be a jet fan we had a chance to get the best wr and the best pass rusher in this draft and we screwed it up

  45. avatar Steve from Philly says:

Pretty happy with this pick. He’s a lot better than the options at reciever… and maybe now we can score some points in the red zone. Imagine if we had him last year vs. the Ravens…

  46. avatar Chris B says:

Klecko. I’m not saying that I would have wanted Shockey, because I wouldn’t. Just bringing it up because he is a proven commodity and would have cost less.

  47. avatar Damian says:

hes better than the best wrs in this draft. Mayock had Thomas as the most likely to be a bust in this draft. he was the “best receiver.” gimmer keller baby, what a video, great zeppelin song too.

  48. avatar Chris B says:

Can’t believe both Henne and Brohm are still available. Too bad the Jets don’t have enough to move back into the 2nd rd.

  49. avatar Steve from Philly says:

That video does make me feel a lot better. Man, look at that seperation. Kudos to tazzelrik!

  50. avatar RK says:

He is a WR in a TE mold and we got the highest rated TE in the draft and along with that a Redzone threat who can tear up the middle of the field and take a hit. Great concentration and can make big YAC from short passes near the line of scrimmage which aides Chad if he’s in and can also go long which helps Clemens.

This guy is a play maker which people were begging for but I haven’t seen how well he blocks. He seems tough and smart and is certainly fast.

  51. Based on the way last year’s trade ups worked out, I think you have to give Tangini the benefit of the doubt. Gholston makes me a little nervous, I hope he’s for real.

  52. avatar neil herschkowitz says:

One must wonder why the Jets make such a show of interviewing and investigating people like McFadden and Ryan…hundreds of hours, and make no move for either. Then trade up for a TE when we have 2 already.

Heck, if you want a tight end that scares people go after Shockey.

Al that money in FA, and not one single move for a true offensive weapon….how sad this makes me.

Do we really fail to understand that we scare nobody out there. That NE has Brady and Moss and we have Chad.

No Balls at all 8 & 8 if we’re lucky. Great going Manenbaum

  53. avatar md says:

tazzelrik, tone down the upper case, but, thanks, that was what i needed to see. he looks like a hell of a player. i think tangini knows more than i who probably would have taken b. flowers.

  54. avatar alex says:

    the video was good…
one play against OSU: no 1 ranked pass defense in 2007
one play against Ark: no 23 ranked pass defense in 2007
some plays against Ball St: no 58 ranked pass defense in 2007
a lot of just sick plays against Minnesota: no. 115 ranked pass defense in 2007
and a play against Toledo: no 62 ranked pass defense in 2007

We have all seen his combine, we all know that he is an athelete, but I would not go so gun-ho with this pick.

Even Mayock thought he was a reach for the first round.

And I still believe he is a reach with what we gave up, the “2nd round” receiver depth that was there (since he will not be a true tight-end), and the chance he would have fell to us anyway.

We only had sick picks this year and now we only have five. Last year we only came away with four picks. Albeit some good picks, you can’t do that every year.

Having said that, hope Keller has 80 receptions and 10 touchdowns next year! Go Jets!

  55. avatar Damian says:

I like the draft so far. This is gonna put pressure on Bowens, Thomas, and Pace to produce. Hopefully Gholston can excell. As for TE, WR, I think we are deep enough as long as our Oline meshes and we can have time to go downfield.

  56. avatar jeff says:

Wow, nice video. Makes me feel a LOT better. Maybe the Jet’s air attack can actually generate some YAC like the old days when they had Chrebet

  57. avatar alex says:

    steviek

The rant on not picking a TE again, was just that, a rant, based on prior bad luck and dumb decisions in our drafting history.

I know things can change in the future…

    just getting the frustration out

  58. avatar neil herschkowitz says:

The tape made me feel better. God this this is an emotion filled day.

He looks tough and fast on the tape…..good hands as well. Can he block

Hey I thought Chris Baker had those same skills.

  59. avatar James in TN says:

Simply put, 2 picks 2 players both from the little 10 er big 10. Combine warriors doesn’t always translate to NFL success. Remember these guys hire trainers to prep them for the combine. I just hope they pan out. Too bad we didn’t address CB, WR, or a QB. Oh well, we will be in the top 10 of the draft next year no worries.

  60. avatar klecko71 says:

chris…the giants wanted a 2 for shockey…. and so far the saints aint biting….

we got this kid for a 4…..

hardy is a bill right?? perfect…we get to see him score TD’s against our CB’s,…hopefully we dont let poteat or that loser david barrett cover him =)

i like the pick….the guy looks like a sick athlete. big presssure on schott this year, b/c if he blows again he kills his chances of being a head coach. so he has to go back to spreading it out, getting the ball in playmakers hands…getting creative like 2 years ago.

he is basically coaching for a contract….so now he has a legit homerun threat. the guy can flat out run after the catch

  61. avatar neil herschkowitz says:

Excuse me RK, and with all due and proper respect. A play maker? This TE is a play maker? Hummm…McFadden is a play maker. This guy is a huge question mark.

The UTUBE highlights were against some of the lowest rated defenses in football.

  62. avatar swizzle says:

not a bad pick, I think the Jets addressed their glaring needs in free agency, and enhanced them so far in the draft. Hopefully with the 3 picks they have left they can select a CB, OL, and best available player. Dont forget next year they should have around 10 picks.

  63. avatar citicat says:

Don’t forget to add Doug Jolley to the list of tight ends the Jets spent a first on – even if it was in a trade.

  64. avatar dave says:

You guys (most of the comments I quickly scanned over) are way too superficial in your analysis of what happened here. There must have been some inside info that the giants were looking to pick him up, and the organization must be interested in dealing Baker. So, if they want to deal baker, then that would leave us with Bubba Franks as our only TE. If the giants were going to take him, then we would have had to settle for Fred Davis most likely, who is bona-fide bust material. this wasn’t *that* crazy of a pick.

  65. avatar oh goodness says:

While I’m usually supportive of any move the Jets make, I have to say that this is just a horrible, horrible pick by Tannenbaum. There were a number of great players available in positions of far greater need for the Jets. I would’ve been happy with a corner like Brandon Flowers, but most of all they NEED a receiver. And with literally EVERY receiver in the draft available at 30, what do they do? They take another stinking tight end. I don’t know if this was motivated by the Baker situation, but if they wasted a first round pick on an unproven tight end just so they could dump their proven tight end, then what a colossal waste. And for anyone that says there wasn’t a receiver worth taking that high, let’s not forget there were at least four receivers being projected in the first round up until today, with many expecting Buffalo to take Devin Thomas at 11. Hopefully Keller will prove me wrong. If not, I’ll be forced to take consolation in watching Thomas and Malcolm Kelly run circles around the Giants twice a year and wondering what could have been. Way to go Jets.

  66. avatar DSmizzle says:

The more you look at this guy, the more he seems like a pretty tall, very well-built, play-making WR (rather than a traditional TE).

His 40 time was pretty good for a WR, and he’s got decent height and the apparent ability to make tough catches and break tackles.

While not Randy Moss, this is the type of player we need (a playmaker that is, whether it be via a DMC-type RB, a James Hardy-type tall WR, or a Shockey-type TE, who I think this guy plays like).

  67. avatar billvv says:

If you think of DK as a WR or a split TE, you get a 4.5 speed 240 pounder, way bigger than any WR you had on your board! And, for the FO, more utility than a WR. Teach him blocking and you can’t tell me you’d rather have a blocking WR than him leading an end-around or a trap block. The guy is 20 pounds heavier than any WR available AND AS FAST!

The surprise factor is that we didn’t think of it and they did! Get used to it! See you tomorrow!

  68. avatar droseatwork says:

    30. New York Jets (from Green Bay)
The pick: Dustin Keller, TE, Notre Dame
What he brings: No tight end in this year’s class projected as a first-round pick in our opinion, making this pick a reach. One of the biggest knocks on Keller is that he’s probably never going to develop into an excellent in-line blocker. Also, he doesn’t have the frame to add a lot of bulk without sacrificing his greatest strength: his speed. However, Keller certainly has the athletic ability, versatility and burst to make an immediate impact as a receiver. He will be a tough matchup for opposing defenses; his size can cause enormous problems for defensive backs and most linebackers are going to have problems turning to run with him.
How he fits: The Jets are a team lacking playmakers, but Keller gives offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer a lot of versatility with his personnel groupings and matchups. He has good hands and gives them a threat in the passing game, unlike Chris Baker or Bubba Franks. Look for Schottenheimer to move him around and detach him in the formation. The Jets have spent heavily on offensive line and defense in the offseason, and now Keller will help them put points on the board.

  69. avatar neil herschkowitz says:

Chris Baker doesn’t have good hands? Which Chris Baker have you been watching?

  70. avatar Jetshopeful says:

I would have liked to seen a CB here like Flowers, but what u gonna do. I think this guy might be good….I hope,,,

  71. avatar P in CO says:

Purdue is a decent program but they play the spread offense which gives their wideouts a lot of opportunities. Their offense is similar to Texas Tech, Missouri, and Hawaii but it begs the question… does it translate to success in the NFL. I don’t think it does since the only players that come to mind is Wes Welker (TT) and Ashley Lelie (UH).

  72. avatar Broadway12 says:

I like the pick i just don’t like that we gave up our 2nd and 4th rounders for a guy that some mock drafts did have us taking at the position we were in when our turn came in the 2nd. But He has good height and is faster then the other TALL receivers that were in this year’s weak class. So I am looking forward to seeing him and Gholston(who scares me also since he will be playing LB) help our team!

  73. avatar subwayfare says:

I don’t know. Maybe a reach but with the Pats aging linebacker corps a guy like Keller should give BB some heartburn, matchup-wise. And it’s pretty obvious that no one thought any of the top WRs in this draft were the next Terrell Owens or Chad Johnson. If Brad Smith continues to develop and Stuckey comes back from his injury we might not have as much need as people think at WR.

  74. avatar seanmac says:

The Giants were going to take Keller at 31 and trade Shockey, so if the Jets wanted him, they had to be at 30 to get him.

  75. avatar swizzle says:

For any team not to take a WR in the first round, there had to be something wrong with this class. Who knows Devin Thomas could be the next Charles Rodgers.Like most drafts though you cant knock a questionable pick until a couple of years down the road. DK hopefully will be a great red zone target and open up the middle of the field between the 20s.

  76. avatar subwayfare says:

I can argue with giving up the pick for Keller and wasn’t a huge Gholston fan but the Jets definitely just got a lot more athletic. Let’s just hope they can coach these guys as well as they obviously think they can.

  77. avatar SackDance99 says:

The Jets needed a play-making TE. I like Baker, but he is just okay. The “Ty Law” chuck rules apply to TEs in coverage, making any pass-catching athletic TE a match up nightmare. Keller is also versatile, he could play TE, H-back or the slot. IMO, he’s exactly what both Chad and KC need. Chad’s a precision passer, who is great at play action and finding single coverage. Keller singled up is a 20+ yard play every time. KC is short and a scrambler who needs a safety valve, like Romo has with Witten or Brees has with Bush. We didn’t like 8-men in the box, Keller makes having the strong safety cheat up a very risky move. And, look at how we match up against the Pats. Assuming that Hobson is the strong side ILB, he is shorter and far slower than Keller. The reason Hobson was moved to the weak side on the Jets was because he couldn’t cover the TE. Mayo is faster, but if he has to turn around and cover a TE streaking down the seam, there will be a huge hole in the flat. As much as I am skeptical of the VG pick, I LOVED this pick. Instead of recent history with TEs, how about the days when the Jets went from Castor (converted WR) to Barkum (converted WR) to Schuler (the best overall TE in Jets history). Mitchell was a head case, Becht and Brady were primarily blockers and Jolley was not drafted. As long as Keller doesn’t lose his passion for football by marrying a Brazilian heiress (like Johnny Mitchell), he should be fine.

  78. avatar Neal says:

Kellar is a good pick. Greenbay might have taken him if we didn’t take him.

  79. avatar dakar says:

i love the way tangini makes moves in the draft…since they took over the jets i loved every pick except schlagle…they obviously learn from their mistakes… loved every move they made in FA and the trades they’ve made so far…they have this organization heading in the right direction…im loving it…

  80. avatar neil herschkowitz says:

How is it that all you guys that now love this pick never mentioned his name once in any post prior to the draft as a good candidate for selection…

This sounds like what spin doctors do after a candidate messes up.

  81. avatar Frank says:

I am loving the Jets draft so far. What do the Jets need to beat the Pats……copy the only team who actually beat the Pats last season…..the Giants. They get a player in Gholston who could end up being a stud pass rusher and a threat either going deep or underneath in Keller. I am more impressed every time I watch the film on Keller. Much higher ranked than Doug Jolley. I hope they use him in the slot for mismatches like they do with Dallas Clark in Indy, Ben Watson in NE, and Antonio Gates in SD. A TE/WR who runs a 4.5? That is awesome.

The more and more I look, I realize the Jets are doin ok at the WR position. They already have Coles, Cotchery, B. Smith and Stuckey. That is not a bad tandem. We said from the start that the Jets were in a position to take BPA and this is exactly what they did by getting two playmakers on both sides of the football. No one can say that these picks are bad until these guys suit up and see what they can do.

They definitely need help in the secondary, maybe ILB, extra OL, possibly one more WR, and I don’t see them drafting a QB and just signing a FA after the draft. Let’s get some more skill players in here.

  82. avatar Jason says:

I’ve been saying it all week, don’t move up in the board take the best player available and we got him “the freak VG” this was a great pick, as for the second pick Keller, he has a motor and unlike many of the other receivers available he is a big physical (KEY) target that has the ability to take it home, he opens the field for Coles and company and will always be a red zone threat. I know he does not block well at times- and if anyone has watched the highlights he at times avoids blocking, but thats the past. Besides if he pulls that stuff now he will have to answer to DBrick, Fenica, Mangold, Moore, and Woody any questions.
My question is, what to do with Baker, I think we try to keep him, he is a consistent cat who delivers, he knows the system which is important right now. If we do trade him we need a mid to bottom third or a top fourth round pick at least, he is coming off a solid and consistent year, with that pick we address the CB or if we don’t we better get on the phone with Law because the CB’s are becoming slim pickens. Needs we need to address the 2nd CB, OL for depth. Needs I would like to see addressed ILB for depth I know we wont but I’ve been saying it for sometime now, get Connor from PSU, he is a tackling machine”

    neil herschkowitz,

Most of us don’t even know what a good draft is…. we haven’t had a good one since 2000.

I think people who are being super critical of this pick are only looking at one thing: the “TE” next to his name. But if you read up on the kid, he’s not really a TE, he’s a burner who can and will easily line up at wideout.

Wasn’t crazy about the pick to begin with, but like it more the more I think about it. The front office obviously rated him higher than any of the wide receivers available, and they clearly weren’t alone, as the first WR taken was at #33, and was a guy (Avery) not many had heard of.

From everything I’ve been reading about the guy, his biggest weakness is his lack of blocking ability, but that’s not an issue with the Jets, since they figure to use Franks as the blocking TE no matter what. If Baker isn’t dealt, Keller can split out wide and be a deep threat, where he again won’t need to be a terrific blocker. Also, this way, Brad Smith can play more downs than he would’ve been able to had we drafted a WR.

We still need a CB to go with Revis, but I’m pleased overall with how we did on Day One.

    Hoz the Jet,
I am not a titans fan , but I am also not a blindly believe in our FO guy either. The picks were bad no matter what positive spin we put on this. Maybe they will pan out, but if the team had someone in mind they should have pursued that player. Keller would have been available for us in the 2nd round and we would still have a 4th. We should have tradedour 6th with Cinci so they could get Ellis and we should have got McKelvin.

    James,

How would u know Keller would be around at #36? Green Bay needed a TE, Giants were about to trade Shockey possibly and Washington took Fred David when Keller was off the Board. There could have been a couple of scenarios where Keller would not have made it.

You can not say this draft is good or bad until these guys get onto to field and show what they can do. Instead of taking a 6-4 WR with a 4.3 forty, we went for a better and bigger guy who can block and open up the field going short or taking a long bomb. Also, Keller has excellent hands. If anyone has every watched this guy play, u will love him the first time u see him play because he is just that tough.

    These highlights are insane.

Its true nobody on here posted we should take this guy but he was on a few mock drafts as a pick for us. And since the 1st WR was a guy nobody even had in the top 5 that says something about the class of WR this year. I’ve been crying for a athletic TE for yrs did’nt think we would get one this year but now that we have it i say we embrace it . We all know what an ATHLETIC TE does for an OFFENSE and its good to have for a young QB like KC to have a safety valve or a weak arm one (Chad that is) to be able drop it off and let him do his thing

Frank: Great point, I like the insight on how theyre copying the GIants model in many ways.

For all the doubters on Keller.Did you know that he was clocked unofficially a 4.38 forty while training for the combine? If you look at his face on nfl.com after he ran his forty he was disgusted with his time because he didn’t run to his expectations! And do you also know that his hands were measured 2nd biggest of ALL the players in the combine?!This kids hands are PEACH BASKETS!lol Not only is he the best tight end in the draft,he’s the best wide receiver as well! And he has a mean streak as well on the field. I love this pick for us and he is going to shut up alot of mouths when he gets on the field.GO JETS!

I saw Dustin Keller dunk a basketball over 7’0″ Greg Oden in a High School game. He high jumped 6’11″ in high school. His athletic ability is freakish. He has been the fan favorite at Purdue since the day he stepped on the field. He’s a great person. The Colts wanted to draft Keller. For all you Jets fans who are ignorant of what you now have in him – we’ll gladly take him back in Indiana. I was very disappointed to see the Jets take Dustin… because I can’t stand the critical negative attitude of NY fans. Watch Dustin on Youtube.
