The Jets select Vernon Gholston.
Gholston is a remarkable athlete, but will have to work hard this coming year under the Jets Defensive Coaches. The Jets needed a pass rusher, and with the players the Jets already have, he’s going
This makes the Jets front seven fearsome … something that was a punchline just a year ago. With Jenkins, Pace and now Gholston added to the players that shined in the midst of some darkness last year like David Harris and Kenyon Coleman.
This front seven is going to see some amazing progress this year.
Here’s Bent’s report on Gholston from Rookiepedia …
Could project to 3-4 OLB … Potential first round pick … Explosive … 10 yard splits at the Combine will be important, ideally somewhere around 1.5 seconds … Showed good versatility against Michigan in 2006, used to slow WR at the line, getting constant pressure and being solid against the run … Forced a run outside on third and one and made a stop at the line of scrimmage … Got constant pressure, forcing a key hold, getting a half sack round the outside and hurrying the QB into a third down incompletion … Good athlete … Instincts have been questioned … Had a tendency to disappear at times … great first step but struggles against the point of attack … Ran the 40 in 4.58 and had a 42-inch vertical jump at his Pro Day. Made headlines for being the one player to beat Jake Long for a sack in 2007.

YES!! YES!! YES!!!
vg is the man. the front seven wil win games on it’s own. Count on it.
-
no way hes to athletic you have to trust out coaches to try to make him more complete and more consistant but hes really fast and really strong he ran a great 40 and did more on the benchpress then any other d-lineman in the draft. im telling you this guy will make big plays and he will get to the qb. im also willing to bet mckelvin is the one who will be the bust.
-
we should take #36 send it to the eagles for lito sheppard hes better than any cb. in the draft then we should trade both of our #4th rd. choices for a 2nd. rounder and select the best ilb on the board defense does win championship!
-
Has anyone noticed that we could see Long and Gholston go from one rivalry, Michigan v. tOSU, to an new one in the Dolphins v. Jets?
Good to know we got the one that one their matches :)
Should be a good pick, would have been even better if we kept Vilma.

this is just about exactly what my doomsday scenario was…swap the pats for the ravens and dorsey for long, and i was dead on.
Brandon “You’re With Me”riweather, on April 26th, 2008 at 7:56 am Said:
As a follow up, this is my doomsday scenario…(and sadly, perhaps the most likely)…1 – j long
2 – dorsey
3 – ryan
4 – mcfadden (this is the key, as they pass on the legacy)
5 – c. long6 – with ryan off the board, there is very little interest from other teams to trade up. the saints consider it to get sedrick ellis, but decide that the ravens are a better trading partner. the jets are then forced to pick gholston. – and he becomes one of these players who looks like a franchise defender once or twice a year, but for the most part is just slightly above average.
-
is vernon gholston on steroids he looks like the incredible hulk????/
-
This was the rumor for the longest time, and now it finally came true. Nothing wrong with bolstering the D. They still could use some help on the offensive side of the ball as well. Maybe they will address that later.
-
i think with our 2nd round pick it’s time to go offense. Big WR, maybe Flacco, Brohm, or Henne drop down.
-
i like your idea HOZ
pick up a highly touted CB already in the League and trade picks for another 2nd rounder in which we can address however a offensive position. maybe WR. maybe OT?
-
I don’t love the pick, but there was nowhere else to go with it. .
-
i’m now worried that jacksonville knows something the jets dont. unlikely, but that was a big move for harvey.
-
I didn’t like the VG pick, but let’s celebrate the Pats blunder. Both Harvey and Rivers were gone, so they reached for Mayo. Thanks Jax for taking Harvey, because the real nightmare scenario was the Pats getting Harvey, who will be a better OLB/DE than VG.
-
Harvey would never work in a 3-4 system
-
Look, we were forced to take Vernon Gholston, but thats like being forced to eat when you’re starving
-
Supposedly the Pats preferred Mayo to Rivers for some time and would have taken him regardless. I’ve been reading that they liked Mayo a lot for days now.
Anyway, as I said, there was nowhere else to go with the pick- Gholston was clearly the most talented player at that spot, and the best fit for the defense. My hope is that Gholston’s motor issues have something to do with an OSU scheme that favors the linebackers over the defensive linemen and that if Gholston is freed up to go upfield every play that he’ll be more consistently effective. It’s possible. Gholston looks much better standing up than rushing from a down position. For now, the front office gets the benefit of the doubt from me.
-
is it just me or did it look like gholston was unhappy to be picked by the jets? I didnt like his initial reaction to getting picked.
-
so who does everyone want the the second rd pick. i hope we go O unless one of thes cb’s drops big time . i want a WR or a QB if we go O also i would like to try and trade for a 3rd pick to maybe grab a ray rice
-
My eye is on Flacco, but I’m willing to take just about anyone who slips. Hardy, Sweed, Antoine Cason and Kentwan Balmer all come to mind.
-
So much for that.

matt
James Hardy

Don’t love the pick but with Ryan and DMC gone there were likely few trade out partners. Barring a deal, it would have been pretty hard to take anyone else at 6. Hopefully the coaches can help fill in the holes in his game and, even if he just terrorizes Brady a couple of plays a year, I’ll live with it.
-
It all comes down to what happens on the field. Last year we had no pass rush. Now we have added Calvin Pace and VG. Add in BT and blitzes from Rhodes and things look a lot different. We now have the ability to bring guys from all angles. I think we may see a lot of that defense with guys walking around before the snap trying to confuse the OL and get somebody free.
-
This pick reaks of bust… but at least he’s smart. Maybe he can learn not to kamikaze all the time… still, the prospect of him being menacing at least 2-3 times a game is better than nothing. I wish he was picked at 15 or so- that’s where he plays. Well, let’s home we get Sweed now or something.
-
Is Gholston going to start over Thomas?
-
The guy was the 6th pick! He better be good enough to start.
-
I was hoping to entice New Orleans to trade up to 6 to secure Ellis, and then we could take Harvey (who I like better than Gholston) at 10. Once Jax took Harvey at 8, all I could think was – sometimes the best move is the one you don’t make. VG was our best remaining option – he’s very high-risk for a #6 pick, but also very high-reward.
-
Do we take Brohm? Nah. I saw Sweed as a WR if he’s still around. Build a nice young tandem with Cotchery.
-
he is probably going to be rotated in an out at first…
-
There are multiple corners still on the board, there are a lot of quality runners and all the receivers are still there. There are also guys like Balmer, who could work as DE types in the 3-4. The only position whose talent is depleted is OL.
It’ll be interesting to see if Miami wants Brohm or Henne. I’m assuming the latter.
-
Henne or Brohm is no better than what we have right now. We need a bigger target for Chad. Coles and Cotchery are very good but they arent red zone targets.
With a weak arm for a QB Chad needs James Hardy’s great hands, jumping ability, and 6’6 size to get some much needed red zone TDs
-
All the WRs are still on the board. Maybe we get the shot at Hardy
-
Bill Bellichicks son steve plays lacrosse at rutgers university. I have met him several times since my best friend plays on the team with him. Last night I got a text message from my friend saying that the patriots were set on taking Mayo at 7 unless they could trade down, but either way that was who they wanted. As it happened, they traded to 10 and selected him there. Its just funny because everything bellichicks kid has ever told me has happened. It was pretty cool watching the draft and knowing that the Pats were gonna take a guy that no one expected to be picked that high. Maybe i can get some useful spy information from this kid during the season.

Seanmac,
“There are multiple corners still on the board, there are a lot of quality runners and all the receivers are still there. There are also guys like Balmer, who could work as DE types in the 3-4. The only position whose talent is depleted is OL. ”I remember you telling me Balmer was a definite top 15 pick when I said the jets could either get him at 36 or trade up a few spots for him. Seems now you have changed your mind?
-
this is good all these wrs are falling we should get a good wr with our next pick
-
I agree- looks like we’ll be able to have a chance to pick from a couple good WRs. This is getting exciting.
-
i dont see the Jets taking a WR even though I want them to. I expect a defensive back or an inside linebacker in the 2nd round
-
trade were picking at 30
-
i hope its devin thomas
-
brandon flowers im calling it
-
does anyone like this pick
-
I do. I imagine Sack will, too. The Jets were crippled by the lack of a third receiving option, and a tight end who can work the middle of the field is a better fit for both Clemens and Pennington than a receiver would have been.
-
I think it’s a good pick. He runs a 4.5 – 40. He’s almost like a WR. He can get them yards over the middle. A 3rd down weapon.
-
3 words……. WORST DRAFT EVER. OMG what the hell, do we have any clue in the FO? All those great free agent signings just to make a joke out odf the draft WHY????!!!!!
-
I bet our next pick is a punter.
-
why sign Bubba Franks though?
-
Baker better take whatever they offer, or maybe we trade him? Hope so we need a do over. I hope I wake up from this bad dream.
-
james whats your problem with the draft this year? we got the best pure pass rusher in the draft. and then we got a 3rd recieving option who is as talented offensively as any wide reciever in this draft plus you have to remember he is going to be coverd by linebackers who arent even use to covering TE even close to as fast as he is. Also if he gets in the open field hes a threat to take it pretty far. James i understand you prob wanted mcfadden i also did but even if you dont like the picks you cant judge anything without watching them play first. for all we know we can have the next strahan and gates.
-
As far as James is concerned, if they didn’t play in the SEC, they don’t count.
-
Mike,
I wouldn’t take Balmer even at 36, but generally speaking the defensive linemen go high regardless. This year the run was on offensive linemen, which was the strongest group in the draft. Right idea, wrong side of the ball.
-
ya i hear ya but i dont see how someone can get upset about a guy who was the only one to get past jake long and sack the qb all year.
-
Because he spent the rest of the season taking a nap.
-
If Gholston is a bust so what? He’s rated highly by people who get paid to rate players. Not hacks with opinions like most of us.
Courtney Brown and Lavar Arrington were can’t miss prospects in 2000. The Jets could’ve given up a lot of picks to get either one but ended up getting Shaun Ellis who ends us with more sacks then both of them combined.
In this draft Chris Long and VG are the can’t miss prospects. Don’t be surprised if neither one lives up to expectations.
-
“As far as James is concerned, if they didn’t play in the SEC, they don’t count.”
After getting owned twice I think OSU can vouch for the SEC being a superior conference.
-
I didn’t want the Jets to draft VG because I don’t know where he will play. If Pace plays the strong side (a big if), then theoretically Gholston could play the weak side. But, if Pace plays the weak side, does Gholston take over for Coleman? Ellis and BT were awful on the strong side, do the Jets swap Coleman to the strong side and have Ellis play OLB? What happens to BT and Bowens? KC has 3 3rd round picks and a 4th rounder, does Harm want BT back? Right now, I view Gholston as a situational pass rusher only. A guy who comes in and could give a 4-3 look by lining up anywhere on the line or edge rush as the weak side OLB in the 3-4. The no. 6 pick is high for a situational pass rusher, so let’s hope he grows into a position, but his natural position is weak side OLB, and we don’t know what Pace was promised because weak side OLB is the rock star position.
-
VG didn’t looked a little stunned when the Jets called him, because he’s well aware of the bust history of first round draftees by the Jets. It’s happened so often now, it’s hard to blame the phenomenon on the players. The Jets don’t know how to develop young players. Sad but true – VG is wondering if his stellar career in the NFL is over before its ever begun!
-
Correction to my post, should start off:
VG looked a little stunned….

This pick has bust written all over it.
