Not too shabby. I wonder if we could have gotten Keller at #36? The Packers might have taken him if they didn’t trade out of 30. Not sure if the Seahawks would have moved past 36 to get him. They got Carlson at 38 (reach)
I’m a little disappointed that today’s picks had such low grades (according to Scouts, Inc.) other than Ainge. I don’t think that indicates whether or not they can play, but it would have been nice to have grades over 30 (marcus henry, nate garner).
this draft is completely dependent on gholston and keller…if either turns out to be as unproductive as robertson this draft will turn out to be a complete dissapointment
both players have tremendous potential, and you really can’t judge a draft until you see the players productivity in their 1st and 2nd season
excited as hell to see how these players turn out
Overall, I’m satisfied albeit not blown away. Was hoping early on for someone other than Golston, as I am thinking he is ever so slightly overrated. But…not criticizing here at all. He fills a need and was the best available. None of the first five picks were worth the Jets trading up for. I also like that they’ve added some height to their offense. Both rcvrs and the qb drafted have nice height numbers and that’s something this offense has been lacking. Overall, I think I’d give this draft a B-
I really thought that woodyard slid and thought mebbe the jets would take him in the 7th round. He was a tackling machine and pairing him up on the inside with rhodes with pace and gholston on the outside was a perfect fit, but with him on the board and us taking an OT aftwer all the offseason moves and carryover from last year (bender), it makes me scratch my head. Also, why not take the kentucky qb over ainge? He had a stronger arm? Threw for 40td and only 11 int and is a good pocket passer but can run if needed ala a young mcnair.
This should be a fun year for us. We got some good players in the draft- targets for our QBs and some defensive threats. Since we had such a terrible year last year, the only place we can go is up! Let’s try to catch the Pats this year and prove them all wrong!
I thought the Jets did good, adding some more pieces to the puzzle and some depth. Only disappointment was not taking a ILB, but hey theres always next years draft or this years draftees who werent picked . There depth chart looks a helluva lot better now than it did in January I must say.
Very happy with the Gholston pick as I didn’t want DMC on this team. Keller pick was a surprise but I’m excited about him being on this team. I’ve read Seattle was high on him so that’s probably why we traded up to get him. I don’t know much about the other guys they drafted. I’m not big on Ainge as I never though he played that well in big games but you never know. I hope if the WR from Michigan A. Arrington doesn’t get drafted that we sign him as a rookie free agent.
Tough to say how this draft is — to be honest probably most of us have never seen 5 out of the 6 people we drafted actually play in a game. But I like the Gholston pick (his scouting report from Scouts inc. is almost identical to the one they wrote for Mario Williams 2 years ago — I know different position and all but that pick looks like it is working out for the Texans!), like the idea of a Shannon Sharpe/Antonio Gates-like TE. Looks like they are looking for more red-zone type receivers which sounds great to me.
Don’t know who Garner is, but I’ll tell you this much – watching all those McFadden and Felix Jones highlights — the thing that really stands out other than McFadden’s speed is the fact that he never got touched going through the LOS — big holes and I am sure Garner had something to do with that!
Lukewarm. Its hard if not impossible to tell if these guys are better than the grades they had. But if seems if their grades are wrong then the Jets could have waited or traded down and acquired more picks. Their are def going to be some good LB’s that don’t get drafted. Hopefully the Jets grab some of them.
This was a smart draft once again from Tangini. I think that as every year passes and we look back on these last three drafts, we addressed our biggest problems by finding quality at the top and the bottom of the draft.
The only questionmark here is Lowery, who would be best fit in a cover-2 style defense. He isn’t fast enough to stick to an NFL type receiver. Reminds me of – gulp- Derrick Strait.
Overall however, I could see 3 of the guys becoming starters and we may look back on this draft as ‘the one that changed our fortune’ as Jets fans.
I give the draft an A-.
We have to wait and see what happens but, every player picked has potential. I was not happy about moving up for Keller but, if he becomes a force, i’ll live with it. The fourth round of this draft will yield lots of players. After picking Keller, I thought that they would trade Baker for a third rounder. No such luck. Nate Garner is a big boy, who was the RT for McFadden this year. He likes to knock people down. I would love it, if Garner can step in and start at RT. That would make the draft, for me. Did training camp start yet?
Disappointed overall in draft particularly the reach for TE. And ainge over goff is also disappointing. I hope the JETS brass knows what they are doing but at 6 PM on sunday, I have my doubts.
I also think that with the ever increasing ticket prices, god forbid psl fees and the poor product on the field, my days as a JETS fan may be numbered.
If Garner starts at RT where you gonna put Woody? RG where he sucked on the Lions last year and got benched?
Garner will join Bender on the bench as depth.
I agree with vbsiena24. Garner is not going to be starting of Woody after they gave him that deal this off season and he’s not starting over Brandon Moore at RG. This was a pick for depth on the O-line.
Lets not forget there are still players out there remaining to be signed.
I give the FO a grade of B+ which includes all the free agent signings.
It should be a fun season … no more excuses. We have a DEFENSE and OFFENSIVE weapons.
Now .. who do we start at QB?
When does training camp start?
I wonder if they drafted Lowery to compete for the other safety spot.
I’m neutral to the Gholston pick. I really wanted someone else to fall to the Jets but given the position they were in they took the best player available and filled a team need.
Just like everyone else, I hated the move to trade up at 30 and take the tight end. It was a reach for one, and tight end is not a position we really need to bolster. It looks to me like they took the TE at 30 just to send a message to Chris Baker.
I would have liked to see the Jets take higher rated players in the later rounds, but maybe Mangini liked what he saw out of these kids.
The QB from Tennessee was a nice pick. Clemens hasn’t looked spectacular at QB thus far and this gives us a nice option in case Clemens doesn’t work out.
moving up for keller is really a non-issue.
the 4 they gave was the saints pick for vilma. when it came time in early 4 with their own pick, obviously there was no one there they really liked so they traded down… and ended up getting back the pick they traded.
so, what moving up for keller meant, was instead of taking a guy with an extra pick in 4, taking that guy in 5 instead. not a big deal if they really liked keller. you’re not going to get a rookie who can be a starting corner in the nfl in the 4th, its slot cb/depth/project.
and despite all the qb & wr stuff i’ve been reading in posts, keller is a need in the scheme and he’s a good fit for the offense they’ll be running with either pennington or clemens. against cover 2, when there are 2 deep safeties, the way to attack is over the middle with a te on a lb.
the wr is the last piece, and they have 3or 4 functional guys and can run alot of different formations with them. believe me there were no moss or owens’s available.
i’m ripping this off from parcells but, if you can play defense and run the ball you can win anywhere. think back to 05. last year was on the OL and DL. this year will be on the OL and DL.
I liked their draft, but it really comes down to the 2 guys they took in the first round, they need to become at least solid players at their respective positions. The rest of the picks…if we end up with solid backup or two you’d have to be satisified.
Steve in Philly said, “the only place we can go is up”, however:
Jets 1995 — 3-11
Jets 1996 — 1-15
Will Danny Woodhead sign a free agent contract?
The Jets called him.
After seeing the youtube footage of Keller, there is NO WAY Pennington can make the throws to maximize this guy’s value. If Pennington starts, it is a wasted pick.
Sounds like the Jets may sign Danny Woodhead. That would be interesting.
Good point John. Kotite…the worst of times.
I believe in Tangini. My questions about the team are..do we have the depth of talent to get through a year AND do these peices gell?
I the answer to both of those questions is yes? This is going to be a SCARY team. This is , on paper, the most athletic team we have had in a while. The peices seem good.
So though as a Jet fan, I have learned that the worst CAN and WILL happen…we will be seeing an improved Jet team not marked by the “intercepted shovel pass” and any number of awful moments ‘95 and ‘96 brought.
I love the VG and DK picks in round 1, but would have liked to see them stay at 102 and grab Beau Bell (4) or if they still made the trade, take Goff (5) to play inside with Harris. I guess ILB wasn’t enough of a need.
I love the first two picks, I’m ambivalent about the rest.
Lowery is better suited to safety at this level, so if they make that position change, I’ll like this pick better. Otherwise, I can’t see him as anything more than a nickel back.
Ainge and Henry are marginal pro prospects. Don’t know much about Garner.
I thought they could have done better in the bottom half of this draft. Seems like too many reaches.
I’m fairly happy with the picks. Love the Gholston pick. I was at RCMH and every other Jets fan seemed to be just as excited. I don’t know about the move up for Keller. I feel if we stayed put we could’ve gotten Keller or picked one of any of the WR’s. Or we could have used that 2nd 1st rounder on Brandon Flowers or Kenny Phillips. Keller should be a solid catching TE so I’m not too disappointed. I like Dwight Lowery, but I thought we could’ve picked either Orlando Scandrick from Boise St. or Trae Williams, but Lowery had nice production at San Jose St. I like the pick of Ainge. I would have preferred Woodson over Ainge, but I like the pick. I really like the Marcus Henry pick. He’s a tall receiver with nice hands. He has decent speed (4.5) and runs good routes. I don’t even know who Nate Garner is so there isn’t much I can say about the pick. Overall I give the Jets grade a B.
if gholston can play with some consistency as the year goes on, whats wrong with giving b.thomas some snaps at inside backer as a hedge on barton?
same for pace. both have the physical skills to do it.
reaching for keller reminds me a little too much of reaching for schlegel. but there wasn’t another TE drafted for the next 17 picks, so maybe he was that much better than any other TE.
also, in three drafts, tangini has drafted one d-lineman (7th round in 2006). this is a little disturbing. i really thought they would make a move to get in position to take kendall langford. instead, he went to the dolphins… even frank okham might have been worth a pick as late as he went.
i guess if gholston and keller turn out like mangold, revis, and harris then this is a good draft. if they turn out like d’brick, it’s a bad draft.
one more thing to note is that teams with bad records usually draft a lot of players to get more good players. we sort of acted like the team was good last year.
The Schlegel pick sucked because a) it was for a guy with limited upside with a questionable skill set and b) it was a definite reach, with it looking unlikely that anyone would have taken a flier on him so early.
Keller has excellent upside, and it sounds as if there were other teams interested in picking him very close to where we did. There’s really no comparison between the two picks.
we did well….and as with any draft…ur first 2 picks are the key. mangini will enjoy moving gholston around with pace, and with david harris we are stacked at LB. we need a second reliable CB though….is david barrett still on this team?? lord i hope not. i expect this defense to be an aggressive, in ur face, smack that ass, monster of a D. harris was a freakin terror last year with a garbage DL… these LB’s can dominate for a long time!!!!
The Ed(itor) why can’t you watch the JETS on TV like most of us fans, running away from a team just because they had a bad year is a bit foolish as JETS fans we should be the example of patience and pride (due to the losing and ineptitude we have had to endure) I expect a good year and a likely return to 10-6
I think I wore black every Monday for 3 months in 1996.
Great job guys. Have a safe trip home. I am as always cautiously optimistic about the Jets NFL Draft 2008. More discussion as the dust settles..
Pretty good draft, weve made alot of moves this offseason now its time for them to perform. and beat those damn pats in week 2
every player we selected in this draft is huge just look at the profiles..
IMO Jets had ok draft, Pats & Fins had GREAT drafts. welcome back big tuna… AFC east will be best divisions in NFL again in a few short years.
Week 1 is gonna say a lot about this team. Parcells is gonna have that team playing like it’s their Super Bowl. Recall week 1 in 97 we kicked the crap out of the Seahawks at Seattle.
Vbsienna, If Woody sucked at RG with Detroit, what would make you think he will be a solid RT. That is why I am hoping Nate Garner can somehow surprise us in the pre-season. Is it likely that he will end up being our starter, absolutely not. What I am saying is that, if he blocked for McFadden and did a good job (for his one starting season), maybe he is a sleeper. At 6′6″ 320lbs, with the desire to pancake people, I’d get him a lot of coaching.
We destroyed Seattle…….God that was so sweet…
Another signing
http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5hbn9ac0n41oR44K540t9SEDnGeDAD90AH2900
i like the woodhead signing…you never know what could come out of a DII back but I’m sure they are not paying him much money..could pay off as a major sleeper, he really had a helluva college career
How did the Pats have a good draft? They attempted to trade up for Gholsten but failed and now he is in their division on the JETS! They traded down chancing that Rivers might fall but he was taken. They had to settle for Mayo who is good but too small for a 3-4 and a serious reach for #10.
They also took a QB in the 3rd round?
Very unexciting, and lackluster draft for Jets fans. I was very excited for this draft, and it just felt like a letdown. Some teams really did well, ie.Baltimore, Miami etc.
To be honest I didnt really watch today bit after figuring out exactly how it went down I am wondering why Tanny took Ainge over Woodson – they play virtually the same schedule and it seemed (without actually looking up the #’s) that woodson had much better production. I have seen both play quite a bit and i would def prefer woodson ove ainge. I give the draft a C, the FO admitted Gholston is somewhat of a project – I think the pats totally played them and blew some smoke up their but that Gholston is a monster when they really dont think thats true. I actually like Keller and I think he will take over the H-back role from Joe-Ko and thrive. I think the rest of the picks are long-shots to be with the Jets 3 years from now.
Lets not forget that Parcells is not on the sidelines anymore so he’s not going to have them playing like anything, it’s now up to Tony Sparano.
RT is a major concern of mine, as is CB. We are in big trouble if Woody dosen’t cut it, there are no suitable alternatives on the roster. Maybe we could trade with someone for a decent RT, we could offer them Brian Thomas.
a lot of unknowns, but also a lot of upside. we had some needs and addressed them. I’m not sure I want to comment any further until we see these guys week 1 when it counts. Im not ecstatic, but Im certainly not disappointed either. Like I always say I have faith that the FO knows what they are doing and trust they know more about this stuff then any of us ever could. All in all I’d say its been a great off season for our Jets, and fully expect to be contenders in 2008.
FWIW, just looked up Danny Woodhead and he’s got a website with stats and bio:
http://www.dannywoodhead.com
i think the jets had a great draft miami drafted jake long to protect there qb and we have th eonly guy who was able to beat up on him. also the jets front office was very aware that all the WR were on the board they obviously felt he was a better option this was said to be a awful WR class. i think that everyone is just upset we didnt get mcfadden but whatever ill take the best passrusher in the draft and a TE that linebackers are going to have nightmares about. Lastly if you hated the draft i understand but you really cant be upset until these players play a game or two.
Didn’t think much of the draft. I question trading up for a luxury such as a non blocking recieving tight end, when your team is in desperate need of a corner. Why not take a corner there and possibly make your defense into a feared unit. After the 4th round from the scouting report I have read the Jets basically threw away their picks on guys who are considered to be nothing more than back up waiver wire material. The pick of Ainge defies logic, he must be a character guy. Up to now I thought the offseason had gone well. But this draft doesn’t look good to me.
Keller is more of a WR than a tight end
I really like the Woodhead signing, the upside is great and the risk is extremely low. ESPN says he ran his two 40’s at his pro day at 4.33 and 4.38, vertical was 38 1/2, and he did 20 reps on the bench. Sounds pretty similar to our own Leon…I really like it. I don’t understand why people are upset with Keller, he almost fills two needs: big redzone target and an upgrade at TE. He’s pretty much a hybrid TE/WR, and people say he’s not a good blocker…well that’s what we got Bubba Franks for. He also creates matchup problems for opposing defenses because he is pretty fast as well
I get it that picking a TE in the 1st round causes PTSD w/ long time Jets fans, but I am really happy with the Keller pick. I think he’s going to be an outstanding asset in those 4 games a year against the Dophins and Patriots. I’ve only seen the highlight video on him, but i note that the routes he ran for big plays are the same type of routes where KC flashed the most potential.
Lowery is a great value pick. Ainge has the makeup to be a good backup, and I understand the pick –he’s the kind of guy who can come in when the starter has his bell rung and not destroy you, and he’s the kind of guy who can win you an October game in a spot start
Woodhead is a practice squad player. Nothing more.
I give the draft a B-. I love the first two picks, all we did was swap a 4th for a 5th in order to get Keller. He looks like a star prospect. We need Gholston to be our Merriman. The other picks are obviously projects, and hopefully one of them will turn out to be a good player for the team.
Ainge is kinda like Pennington. He can turn into a good game manager and doesn’t have a strong arm. He’s a fine 3rd stringer. I didn’t like taking him in the 5th, but I suppose its not the worst pick.
I like that Lowery has CB/S capabilities. I remember hearing about him last year as being a potential first day draft pick but kind of fell off a bit his senior season. Regardless, we have good luck with 4th rd. picks like this – IE Kerry Rhodes – so I’m optimistic about his potential
BTW – did ne1 just see the clip about James Hardy on SNY? I gotta say I’m a little nervous about this guy who the heck can cover a 6′6 WR? WHYYYY did he have to go to Buffalo…
Hardy is raw to say the least, and a little soft. Blow this guy up a few times and he’ll get alligator arms and play like he’s 6′0. This is the main reason there were no WRs taken in the 1st round – and why we took Keller – it’s generally a weak class. To call the Keller pick a ‘luxury pick’ or a ‘reach’ is way off base BTW. There was big time interest in him from SEA and NYG. We will use this guy in the slot like a Gates or Gonzo create matchup havoc.
This draft wasn’t real ’sexy’ based on most mocks and media (if we had taken DMac and Brohm there wouldn’t be a negative post out here), but overall it could turn out quite well. I also believe Ainge can develop, and is a better pick than Woodson. Saw Andre the past 2 seasons at KY and his release is real slow and requires a ton of work. He is NOT mobile BTW. The top 2 guys could be game changers at their positions. My main dissappointment was losing out on Justin King & Tyvon Branch in the 4th. Would have been great value here, but moving down bought us an extra pick.
The Jets did GRRRREAT, they picked up a pass rusher they desperately needed, picked up a WR/TE/HB they needed and probably the most talented and stongest of a weeeaak WR class, still picked up a corner with a lot of potential, grabbed a QB who is so vastly underrated it makes me ecstatic, the rest of the picks I look at as insurance with potential to be players. I think we have to give Tanny and Mangini some credit, their drafts have been good on the whole in the last 2 years, and I am confident that Gholston and Keller are going to be starters or near starters in the future, as for trading Baker, he is their TE, Keller is going to open up the middle of the field and plow people over and leave LB’s wondering where all the dust came from when he blows by them.
One other thing….although I am not crazy about Gholston (seems to lack a mean streak), without a trade partner, we had to take him there. The Pats on the other hand, could have probably gotten Mayo at 32 if they were not the scurvy cheats they are. You wanna look at a good draft – check PITT – value all over the board.
Pats had a terrible draft.
i was really very dissapointed they took ainge instead of owen schmitt. i can’t express how bad a move this was. (yes, we have richardson, but he is old and isn’t all that great.) owen schmitt was by far and away the best blocking fullback in this draft. he will be a pro-bowl FB like mack strong and lorenzo neal. that is what the seahawks saw and why they took him. if you can get a potential pro-bowler in the 5th round, you take him. bad move.
another bad move: no DL
I am devastated by the TE pick. I’m not claiming to know anything about college football, but how can you give up a mid-round pick to trade up for a TE, an undersized TE of all things?
They traded up for Revis and Harris, and that worked great, so far, but I get the feeling that Mangini and Tannenbaum think they are smarter than everybody else.
This is all I know
Johnny Mitchell
Kyle Brady
Doug Jolley
No More High Picks on Tight Ends.
The Jets need to realize who they are. You are not winning a Superbowl with their current quarterbacks, why are you trading for ’specialty’ or ‘mis-match’ generating players when what you need are core players?
Are they giving up on Chris Baker? They are so good at throwing away players, Kendall, Vilma, Robertson, they oughta keep it up.
I wanted a passrusher and a playmaker. A little surprised the playmaker was a TE. But the tape of keller looks great. Gholsten will earn his stripes if he can hit brady.
I will give my initial rating for this draft a “B” with a couple of moves i would of much preferred!
I just heard on SNY that the patriots tried to move up to KC spot to get vernon gholston. So I am glad we got him instead of having him sacking our QB for the next 5-10 years. I think the Bills did well with their first two picks Mckelvin and Hardy. They now have two great WR weapons in speedy lee evans and super tall fast James Hardy and added a great CB.
I would of changed a few picks for us,but will live with what we got.
Looking at who was available- I would of liked :
1) Vernon Gholston DE/OLB
1) Devin Thomas or James Hardy WR
4) Dwight Lowery CB/S
5) Carl Nicks OT 6′5″ 340lbs. or Jonathan Goff ILB 6′2″ 245lbs.
6) Andre Woodson, Colt Brennan QB – and who knows maybe Ainge would of still been there 9 picks later
7) Nate Garner- just read he is a great run blocker, but poor in the passing game
Roddy – every team can bring up nightmare examples from drafts past. That doesn’t mean you never draft a TE again. If you have a need & a potential answer is near/top of your board and you are only 80 value points away to insure you get him – that’s what you do for the team. Baker signed his deal and now wants to hold the team hostage. He is giving up on the Jets, not the other way around.
The more I think about Keller, the more I like the pick. In the same way that Jenkins is the archetype nose tackle that Mangini lusted after to finally make his defensive scheme work, Keller may well fill that role for Schott’s offense. He may not ever become Antonio Gates or Tony Gonzalez but a speedy, athletic seam buster like him, who can line up in a number of spots, could be a key element in getting BS’s playbook to hum.
Also, Johnny Mitchell was actually a pretty incredible athlete who showed some flashes of brilliance. He just happened to be an erratic, self-centered, certifiable nutjob.
I still think that if we just sign chris baker to en extension and used the 2nd 1st round pick to swipe jason taylor from the dolphins we would be picking this team for a super bowl. I like picking up a rookie te but neither the rookie nor baker can block you didnt gain anything therefore a wasted pick. I like the rest of the picks and i even think we have enough linebackers…people forget about david harris. vilma who? I just hope that we can be atleast a contender because it looks to me the team is close to being absolute but the biggest question lurks with the biggest position in a game….the qb ainge and clemens provide a youth movement but cant expect ainge to play and clemens and pennington make me nervous…..both could have stellar years or poor ones but this time they wont have a sorry Oline to blame it on. This is the big test for them both. who knows maybe we will get to see what ainge can do.
This draft could be better if instead of Eric Ainge we had picked Carl Nicks or Jonathan Goff.
I hope that Ainge turns out not to be a back up, because we needed Nicks or Goff.
Gholston, Keller, Lowery will be more than just solid
players.
Dustin Keller, that some people do not like, I think will be a gamer!! He was a better choice than any of the available WRs. Besides, Marcus Henry is the tall receiver that we needed and I think will surprise a lot of people.
Overall, I give the FO a B- , because I think they had a chance to do better. I hope I am wrong.
I wonder if we can start the nickname process yet for draftees?
I’ll start with a couple:
Vernon GOOOAAAALLLL GOAL GOAL GOAL GOAL Gholston!
-or-
Vernon “The Sherman” Gholston (as in Sherman tank)
Leavin’ ‘em in the Dustin Keller
-or-
Dustin “LB Killer” Keller
-or-
Dustin off LBs Keller
Dwight “Receiver’s Fright” Lowery
-or-
Dwight “Hit ‘em High and” Low ery
I know…scary good hahaha
The draft was a BIG letdown, but I will always be a Jet fan. Just once I would like a shot at throwing the darts in the draft war room. I have a dart board and I’m not that bad. The Ainge pick was a perfect cap to this awful selection process. We should have traded down when the pieces of the top 5 fell into place or traded up if we were locked in on a certain player. Bad as I hate to say it, the Pats got the better pick by getting Mayo. He was the leader of the Vols last year. Ainge was the reason we lost to LSU in the SEC championship. I’ll be surprised if any of the draft picks make a difference this year. The upside is that we signed great free agents this off season. I just hated watching Herm draft way better than us, they must have hired an outside consultant. Maybe we should do the same next year. Draft Grade C-
i’m very disappointed.
biggest needs were CB, WR and QB and none of them were answered with a good value pick.
i’m surprised Tangini were not agressive or smart as previous drafts.
can’t understand why they took another injury prone QB in Ainge. after missing on Flacco they should have gone for Henne or Brohm on 3rd round (just trade this year 4th and next year 3th for that pick….easy !)
Keller’s pick is the stangest. the guy can’t block so he is not replacing Baker. ALSO EVERY TIME HE PLAYS TEAMS KNOW TO EXPECT THE PASS RATHER THE RUN !!!
even if Gholstone becomes a monster i value this draft as a C.
i hope i’m wrong
Started out great and went steadily downhill. Counting Doug Jolly, this will be the 5th TE taken in the first round by the Jets. None of which were very productive, save perhaps Jerome Barkum, and that’s debatable considering him being a first rounder. Shulla was better. Will they never learn? James Hardy would have looked great in green and white and we passed him up. Now we have to defend against him twice a year. The rest of our picks were mediocre at best.
Check that, the 6th TE !
Very content with the picks made…and kudos to KC for not trading out of the 5 pick with NE!
you guys are crazy you cant judge a draft until 2yrs. down the road what if all these guys you all are screaming about turn out to be BUMS and all these guys tangini draft become SUCCESS storys you will be back on the tangini BANDWAGON!
USAToday rated JETS draft a C. I give it a D. Next year I will go away for the weekend and ignore the draft completely.
Whether you like the Keller pick or not, it is indisputable that he was one of the best receiving playmakers in this draft.
While most of us, including myself, wanted a very tall WR (and there were a bunch in the draft), I admittedly didn’t pay much attention to the TE’s in this draft, b/c I didn’t think there was a shot in hell that the JETS would take one.
As it turns out, once I took a closer look at Keller, he isn’t so much of a TE as he is a big WR, kind of in the Dallas Clark mold (I’m sure you’ve heard that comparison a lot since the pick, its all over the newspapers).
His highlight reel reminded me a LOT of Jeremey Shockey during his rookie year, particularly the nastiness and when he jumped up to his feet after being hit so hard his helmet went flying (he came down with the ball).
Bottom line is that Kellen Clemens and/or Chad Pennington needed at least one offensive weapon to come from this draft and give the offense a boost.
It is far from illogical to expect that Keller might have more yards/TD’s this year for the JETS than would one of the big WR’s we all wanted (myself included).
I’m with everyone else who was not thrilled at first but who has grown comfortable, if not happy, with this pick, the more I learn about it.
THE JETS WILL BE IN THE TOP 5 DEFENSE IN THE LEAGUE THIS YEAR!!!! YOUR HEARD IT HEAR FIRST!
Very happy with the Gholston pick as everyone who has been on this blog before the draft knows that I wanted Gholston over McFadden anyday. We are going to finally be able to generate pressure on Defense with just 4 or 5 guys which will allow us to drop more guys back in coverage.
Gholston scares me. Keller could be very good but probably not as a TE because he is a poor blocker. I like this pick because it adds a player with athleticism and height to the receiving corps. Lowery is pegged as a CB in a zone scheme but is supposedly not a physical tackler so I doubt he will be tried at safety. The other picks fill needs and the Garner pick for OT depth makes me think that the Jets definitely see Bender as a OG prospect and not as a player who has the potential to move outside. That is at least a little encouraging because it makes me think that the coaching staff could see Bender as a solid run-blocking guard with development. As for Ainge, I do not see it as a wasted pick. If anything he was the safest of the players available. If the Jets have little confidence in Pennington’s ability to stay healthy (as I do) then they needed a guy who could come in an run an offense if Clemens does not work out. Woodson will not be ready to play NFL football for at least 2-3 years. Using a pick on a guy like that when the other QBs are questions would have been foolish.
the OL “projects” the Jets have will do fine with Callahan coaching them…he’s one, if not the best OL coaches in the league, i’m sure he had some input with that OL pick this year…they have a year or two to develop…
Ainge is a good pick. He has a strong arm. It didnt seem that way because his pinky was broken on his throwing hand, and he had to tape his pinky and ring finger together which made it hard to throw. He did not lose the LSU game. Yes, he had to force passes at the end, but if the receivers steped up earlier in the game they would have not been in the situation where he had to force balls. Chad Pennington, Clemens have not steped up for the team, so Ainge will probably be in the QB competition. But I think Pennington is better than Clemens so I think he’ll start. Who knows Ainge might be phoenominal.
