The Jets have selected Dwight Lowery Cornerback from San Jose State.
Twelve months ago, people were talking about Lowery as a first round pick. Didn’t have a good senior year as folks expected obviously, but he’s a tall (6’1″ 185 pounds) corner that the Jets roster needed. He makes another spot in the revolving door for the Jets second position, and might have a chance down the road to start for the team at some point.
King and Branch were selected right before the Jets were slated to pick, so moving back wasn’t a bad option and getting Lowery. They settled but at least they got a fifth rounder for it.
From Rookiepedia …
Played in the East West Shrine Game … Decent size … Reported 4.4 speed … Ran the 40 in 4.55, 4.65 and 4.57 at his Pro Day (for some reason he did not run in a straight line on the second 40, so he ran it a third time) … Also had a 38-inch vertical jump, 10-foot 2-inch long jump and 7.01 cone drill … Previously regarded as a potential first round pick
[edit] Senior Year
East West Shrine Game: Featured as a kick returner … Low diving interception on poor pass … Fumbled on kickoff as he ran into back of teammate
Bent noted that since he can’t run in a straight line, he might have trouble if he ever gets pulled over for a DUI as he might not be able to walk straight as well …

I like this pick. Between Lowery, Revis, Hank Poteat (if we re-sign him) and Justin Miller (who had been making strides last training camp), we now have four quality cornerbacks who will benefit from our vastly improved front seven.
-
Where is our speed receiver? Even if Pennington starts he will go down at some point. We need someone fast to catch Clemens’ deep throws.
-
So am I correct that the Jets don’t pick again until very late in the 5th round?
I hope they’ve found something in this Lowery pick
-
I believe the remaining picks are a 5th 162nd overall, 6th 171st overall and a 7th 211th overall.
-
I am not confident that John David Booty will still be there when we ick late in the fifth round. There will be a few that we can take a flier on early in the sixth or seventh like Dennis Dixon or Colt Brennan. Earlier today, I heard Adam Schein on SNY talk about a receiver named Arrington from Michigan. That might be our next pick.
-
Any news on Chris Baker? I think it’s too late to trade him for a pick now.
-
I have hated most of the recent Jets moves when they trade back for more picks. Like any 5th round pick is going to help this team. Give me a break.
Maybe the interview they had with Beau Bell proved that he was gonna not
fit in here. Maybe all three OL taken before our 4th round pick will
s_ck. But we need an ILB and typically, guys who are from a small school, at positions which can cater to guys without speed, or guys who need a position change do best at this point in the draft.Lowery is not from a small school, is not at a position where speed is not required, and is not changing positions and is not likely to be better than Barrett, Miller or even Drew Coleman or Poteat ( would love to work for Tim whose definition of quality would include my work on my worst ever days or days I have stayed home sick).
Harlan
-
here’s to hoping they take booty or dixon or brennan
-
that don’t impress me much….this darft is horrible
-
keller is the speed guy in the middle of the field
-
We don’t need Booty, Brennan or Dixon…….you guys are trying to get a home run hitter in the 4th round. It is not gonna happen. This kids are good, solid players but are not the same as first round talent. This Lowery kid could be a good nickel CB. Easy before you trash the Jets draft…..I hope no one likes there draft so they prove every person in NY wrong. Go Mangini
Harlan, the fifth rounder is a good move and gives them 3 extra players to pick for depth at LB, WR or maybe even at RB.
-
Harlan, guys that are undrafted have made teams. Guys can come from anywhere. Not in great numbers, granted, but we take the picks and take our chances. It’s not to love or hate, but to try guys out using the past to predict the future. Not a great science, more of an art. This FO has shown to have a good eye for talent, but, like in baseball, 300 is a good average.
-
you guys are stupid with this drafting of the QB. Do you really think any QB left is going to make a difference??? As if you guys are still clamoring that we can find a steal with john david booty. his arm strenght is worse than Chad’s!!!!!!
Stop talking like idiots. -
Booty will be an awful NFL QB, some scouts didnt even have him being drafted. As for a speed receiver, I think Chansi Stuckey will be that threat this year, if healthy. I like this pick of Lowery, nice addition to the secondary.
-
Keller is a tight end. We need a burner or Clemens will be as easy to defend as Pennington.
-
They seem to have faith in the Pennington-Clemens combo which they should because these guys are gonna be around for awhile.
-
This draft is looking a lot like last year. By that I mean that the Jets better be dead on with the first two picks. If they are, then a year from now the draft looks good. If they’re not, the draft will look very bad.
-
Johnny, Keller is not a TE. He is a hybrid type of player who has speed and can play the slot. They have him listed as a TE because that was his college position. I am more impressed with Keller than any player they have drafted so far
-
Right now it looks horrendous.
-
Idiots. draft a qb? why? and who do you all think you are criticizing the jets left and right. How the hell do you know if any of these guys are good? The jets and their scouting department have spent months researchign these guys. I think they know more than us. Some of you need to relax.
-
Frank, in terms of speed and stretching defenses vertically, what NFL player(s) is Keller comparable to?
-
Shannon Sharpe or Antonio Gates would be great potential comparisons. Dallas Clark too.
-
Johnny,
this is why ur talking on the Jets blog and Mangini is making draft picks. How can u be negative about players who have not even put on the Green and White jersey? Foolish to assume the draft picks are bad. If ur a Jet fan, u assume the team knows what they are doing. Remember, these guys drafted Leon, Brad Smith, David Harris, Darrelle Revis, Mangold, D-Brick and Stuckey (I like him as the slot receiver this season). These guys know talent and they will prove all u nay-sayers wrong
-
Both great players but neither of them is Bob Hayes.
-
He ran a 4.5 at the combine.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3O5zlZziMfQ
Have u seen the highlights, this guy is a good player with good slot speed. We don’t a burner, We need mismatches on the outside. You guys are going for the home run hitters in a draft which is deep at WR, a skill position.
-
green duck, how can you say this draft has been horrible? We got a nice hybrid DE/LB that will fit in well with our other from seven upgrades, a large red zone target that this team has been missing for years, and now a big corner, who may not be super fast, but has the size to jam wide outs and cover slot receivers.
What would you rather they have done? Let me guess, get a QB b/c you’ve given up on Clemes when he hasn’t even been given a chance. Or perhaps get a RB b/c that will solve us not being able to stop the run at all.
-
A QB is gonna save this team…..give me a break. Pennington is still a decent starter in the league and Clemens has a pretty good arm. This team has more problems than the QB. AT RB, we are pretty set with TJ, Leon and Jesse Chatman.
-
Sorry Harlan…..I don’t hire ignorant people.
-
“If you are a Jets fan, you assume the team knows what it’s doing” That may be the most demented posting in the history of posting. This organization’s history is punctuated with not only bad decision making, but bad decision making so frontier breaking and innovative that it has left even the most jaded of football followers dumbfounded. Thanks for the good laugh, though.
-
Well def a QB at this stage of the draft is a waste of time there’s a reason why Booty,Dixon,Brennan and don’t forget Woodson from Kentucky are still not on a team. There are questions on all of them . We need to stick with ILB,WR,and another DB and take our chances this draft is deeper in those depts then QB. Plus i’m willing to let KC sink or swim and see what he has. We got a revamped O- Line, A threat at TE so A better DEFENSE. Just run the ball play D and let’s see what happens. Shottenheimer needs to change all that motion crap was cute yr one last yr everyone was up on those gimmick plays
-
I agree with Frank. Why would anyone assume that the guys we drafted aren’t solid? Look at the tapes. These guys have CRAZY athletic ability. Does that always translate into NFL success? Well no, but it’s not a bad place to start. For the moment, Gholston and Keller look good enough to be given the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise. As for the QB talk, I just don’t get it. We need to find out if KC can play – I don’t care what anybody says – we just don’t know that right now. Bringing in a mediocre guy is pointless. Give KC his opportunity. If he can’t cut it, next year do whatever is necessary to select a stud.
-
We will win 6 to 8 games this season and that we can thank the easy schedule. Waterboy coach and his clown boss, an accountant turned GM can’t get tout of their own way.
-
Johnny,
Then why do u rout for the Jets? If u think the front office has no idea what its doing, why are u a fan? These guys are good talent evaluators and they proved it in previous drafts with Revis, Harris, Mangold, D-Brick, Leon and Brad Smith. I have full faith in Mangini and Tanny to get the job done and they have done what I wanted them to do, Get Bigger and Get Faster…..that is exactly what they did
-
-
Some of you guys are making me sick with all of your negativity. Are you sure you are really Jets fans? As far as I am concerned the FO has shown me enough from the last two drafts (2006 & 2007) and this one too have my faith.
Look at the talent they have brought in DBrick, N. Mangold, K. Clemens, L. Washington. B. Smith, D. Revis, D. Harris.
We just took arguably the best two athletes of the draft, who also seem to be pretty good football players. Our picks are no more of a risk than anyone elses.
-
At worst Lowery will be a nice special teams guy, at best he could be our new corner with great ball skills.
-
Plus first two picks look like JUICEHEADS. TE Keller went from 175 to 245 lbs in three years ??? Gholston looks like superhuman with Bosworth arms ??? Flags anyone ????? In NFL policy is taboo when it come to steroids, that is why no one can open up the question in fear of anathemisation.
-
When the Pats won Super Bowls, who was there best WR? Deion Branch – a late 2nd round pick by NE. Your tellin me we need a home run hitter……no, the Jets need to create mismatches and be solid on the O-line and D-line….we are getting pretty close to that
-
ramble914 & Frank
we can love the Jets without liking the FO just like we are Americans and can’t stand our FO, but we love America.
-
Give me your predictions for this season ramble914 & Frank .
-
I am a knick fan and hate Dolan
-
Thank you Helen Keller, I feel the same way.
-
10-6 maybe 11-5.
-
I’m a Jets fan. I think Tangini have done some really good things. I have a lot of optimism about the team, etc. However, in year three, both KC and D-Brick need to take it to the next level before I say I have TOTAL confidence in their evaluation skills. Those were 1st and 2nd round cornstone picks that have yet to be totally proven. There’s still time for it, but it hasn’t happened yet.
-
D-brick has been a bust , but I think he will improve with a better O-L
-
There are many fans (including several here) who are part of the instant gratification culture. They know the pick is terrible right away. Mind you, they haven’t spent 1 hour scouting or researching like the professionals in the Jets FO, but their knee-jerk reaction is negative. Wow!
-
jvsvn, I agree just with a bit more urgency.
Ramble914, I say 7-9 or 8-8 in best case scenario with Clemens. With Chad 8-8 or 9-7. Write it down, I wrote yours, we’ll look it up soon. By the way, 914 is it westcester?
-
Just as an observation, and something that we spoke about the past two years regarding this FO, they have again picked 3 players that have more than one position they are comfortable with.
Gholston can get in a 3 point stance but will probably play standing, Keller was a WR and track athlete but is listed as TE, and Lowery was S and switched to CB.
They like players that are well rounded and multifaceted and they take them. I bet Keller could play LB if asked and same with Lowery.
-
PShaw, I read the post from 2 days ago where my twin brother (GREENBLOOD) wrote that in the playoffs we will most likely meet N.E. , IND, S.D. and in the first round (wild card) Cleveland or PIT. The all can score 30 points on us. What can we do? We averaged 17. That is pitifull. Where is our firepower ???
-
First off – James Dolan is not the GM of the Knicks…He is the owner…not a good comparison.
I still don’t understand how u can be a fan of a team when u never agree with there moves. Pick a new team then
Second, I could see this team being 9-7, 10-6, 11-5 and competing for a playoff spot. They are not gonna be a 14-2 team but they are much better this year than last season.
-
New York fans don’t stay quiet. Whether it’s Kotite, Isiah, or Carlos Delgado. If you are a train wreck, the fans will call you on it. A year ago this time, the fans called out the FO as it was screwing around with Pete Kendall, saying to the FO, “You are ruining our season before it’s even started.” The FO answered that with Jacob Bender everything would be fine. The FO was wrong and the fans were right and the fans were right for saying so.
-
Green Hornet, what was the score in the SUper Bowl this season. Was it 38-17? No. A solid pass rush and decent offensive playmakers is what win the championships, not the Darren McFaddens and Adrian Peterson’s of the world. Even thought they are great talents and its better to have great firepower on offense, a great D is gonna win
-
Yes, its Westchester. I believe KC will be a good QB for the Jets, and I think it will begin this year. I don’t think you can fairly judge him after only 8 games, especially when he was running for his life most of the time. I am really excited about the upgrades we made to the OL this FA period. I think it will really help KC anf T. Jones.
-
Johnny, u don’t know what happened with Kendall. I am happy we didn’t give in to him. We have Faneca now!!!!!! Kendall is like 36 yrs old and is a cry baby for fighting for a million dollars. Give me a break with that guy. See ya later Pete, hello Alan
-
Green Hornet, to me this year is the year. KC should be given the ball and we need to find out where we are. I’m not saying he needs to make the Pro Bowl, but he needs to show enough that we beleive he can make it there at some point. Same with D-Brick, if he doesn’t start showing Pro Bowl potential (and he hasn’t come close) then the “bust” label starts looking more legitimate. I’m not quite there yet but the guy was the #4 pick. His time to “learn the pro game” or whatever needs to come to an end.
-
QB Josh Johnson
He had the coaching in college and he has the athletic ability. Give him a little time to develop and catch up to speed of the game and he could be a starter.Did anyone else notice his deep passes. They kind of reminded of Jeff Blake.
I would rate him ahead of what I believe is left.
-
Hellen Keller,
“DBrick has been a bust”? He has started 32/32 games his first two years, granted he has not been spectacular, but you cannot call him a bust. Some players take longer than other to reach their full potential. He has had some good games and some bad ones, which is pretty typical for a young LT.
-
Frank this 1;56 post tells us a lot about you and your morals. Pete is a human being, with family to worry about. It takes a person 20 years to make 1 million with the 50 thousand dollar ssalary. That is utter disrespect. on yous behals. Be ashamed. You live in your parents house?
Ramble914 Pelham here.
-
People who say the jets made bad picks probably dont know anything about these players, probably never seen them play, and definetely havent watched any film on them. Since the jets have done all of this, I think some of you really need to shut up and stop acting like you know what your talking about. I come to this website to have insightful, optimistic conversations with fellow jet fans, not listen to some of you whine and bitch like old woman about stuff you know nothing about. Please, shut up.
-
He is too small, and hasn’t done the job. So he started. Big deal when he has hurt the team when in there. He does have potential and should get better, but sounds like a bust so far.
-
If he is such a team player and a “model citizen”, why did he boycott and trash the FO for not paying him a 1 Mil dollar raise? He is a joke and does not deserve to be apart of this organization. Once he went to the media to complain about his situation, that was where I had a problem with his character. Faneca is an immediate upgrade over Kendall.
I live on my own Green Hornet
-
Let me go on the record and say this has been a good draft. I wanted Gholston for a while and this keller guy looks like a real playmaker that will help our QBs
-
Mike G use names when addressing people.
-
You’re arguing that the signing of Faneca validates the FO’s sabotaging of the entire 07 season.
-
I think this draft is just OK. I hoped for better.
-
Johnny Styne thank you.
-
If Gholston plays up to potential he’s a great pick. I love the Keller pick – who in the AFC east is gonna be able to match up to him? And the corner has potential…..as was said before worst case scenerio hes solid on special teams. I wouldnt mind a project at qb in these last few picks, someone to sit on the bench for 2-3 years
Overall thus far not a bad draft at all, potential to be a really good draft. And I love how they traded out and got a 5th.
-
Does anyone think that Lowery may have been taken as a safety?
Feeling glum about this pick, I went to NFL.com and read this about the guy:
from NFL.com (http://www.nfl.com/draft/profiles/dwight-lowery?id=280) :
A relative unknown when he arrived at San Jose State, following an
outstanding career at Cabrillo College, Lowery made his mark as one of
the top pass defenders in college football. A free safety at Cabrillo
College, Lowery credits his experience at the position and special teams
for his seamless adjustment to the cornerback position at the major
college level. He became the first San Jose State player to earn
All-American honors in consecutive seasons (2006-07)….Lowery visited San Jose State, Purdue and Utah State during the
recruiting period, but enrolled at Cabrillo College to improve his
academic standing. As a freshman in 2003, he was named to the All-Nor
Cal Combine Team, in addition to earning All-State and All-Coast
Conference first-team honors. He led the junior college level with 237
yards gained on eight interceptions, returning two for scores. He
averaged 30 yards on 10 kickoff returns, including one for a touchdown.
He also scored on a blocked punt and a blocked field goal, adding 69
tackles (48 solos) with two fumble recoveries and six pass breakups. In 2004, the free safety led the nation with 202 yards gained on five
pass thefts through the first five games, but missed the rest of the
season with a hand injury. He recorded 26 tackles (14 solos) and was
named to the All-Nor Cal team, despite his injury.——–
If so, this would cheer me up immensely, falling into the position switch category that is attractive at this point in the draft. -
Hope they get a project qb too. That is a real need.
-
Your thoughts on Michigan RB Hart ? He’s available
-
Take him, he is as tough as they come
-
Hart gives us nothing we don’t already have.
-
How bout a gaurd to back up Faneca or possibly supplant Moore?
-
Green Hornet, my posts was clearly addressed to anybody who has been knocking the jets pick. Im not going to write 40 names to address each of you.
-
Sup Bent!
Seems he is versatile- great pick
+Can Play safety
+Ballhawk
+Good in Zone
+Absolute steal for nickel back

david booty have to be the pick in round 5!
