Jets Tried to Trade Up For Chris Long
Well, the first pick for Bent and I was the first pick for the Jets too. Chris Long was the object of their desire, and the Jets did what they could to trade up for UVA Defensive Lineman according to Gary Myers in the Daily News.
But Gholston was not the Jets’ first choice to get after Brady. They wanted Virginia DE Chris Long and tried on Saturday to trade up from their No.6 spot in the first round to St. Louis’ No.2 spot to get him.
When they couldn’t satisfy the Rams’ demands for the pick, sources said they were going to deviate from the pass rush plan and take Arkansas running back Darren McFadden over Gholston. But the Raiders blew that up and took McFadden at No.4. The Jets never attempted to trade up for McFadden with the Falcons or Raiders after Long was taken by the Rams.
The Daily News learned Sunday that the top three players on the Jets’ board going into the draft were, in order: Long, McFadden and Gholston. The board eliminated Michigan tackle Jake Long, who had already signed with Miami.
That’s how my top four for the Jets would have stacked, with Jake Long coming in after Chris, purely based on need. Gholston was the best player available and if they weren’t able to trade out, which there was no one who would have traded into that spot like they would have for McFadden or Ryan, it was the best choice.

I was wondering about that – if anyone had offered the Jets anything for their sixth pick. It sounds like the answer is no, in which case they did the right thing taking Gholston.
I have zero respect for gary myers, so coming from him I take it with a grain of salt.
In all the draft excitement, I never learned the actual details of the Robertson trade. Does anyone know?
Gholston was the only choice at the 6th pick, only time will tell.
As for Drob, the Jets only get a pick if he plays in 65% of the defensive plays in 2008, last year Elvis Dummervill led the Broncos with 69% of plays, 8 man rotation, sounds like we gave him away, again the FO loses any leverage in trading players!
Thanks J. I’d heard those same numbers about the Drob trade last week, but didn’t trust the source. I can’t believe we don’t get at least a very late round pick for Drob no matter what he does. I think 7th round guaranteed, potential for more if he meets playing time criteria would have been fair.
The Jets also “tried” to move up to draft Lienart after taking Ferguson. Spin away, fat boys.
Leave it to Gary Myers to portray Gholston as the Jets “third choice”. He doesn’t even bother to quote “an anonymous source”, as he often does, to put down the organization or a Jets player, via a so-called third party.
I guess the only way this schmuck can continue to collect a pay check is to goat Jets fans, because that’s all he seems to be able to do.
The Jets perform due diligence with the Rams at 2 and get raked over the goals as if they whiffed on the guy they really wanted. They picked at 6. Everybody’s draft board had C. Long, McFadden, and Gholston in that order. Nice work, Sherlock.
Goat gets it right.
None of this matters now because Gholston WAS the pick. This kind of analysis is always silly. Unless you have the #1 pick in the whole draft, you can’t control your own destiny. I’m sure every team in the league had Chris Long #1 or #2 on their board. With the exception of the Rams, everybody had to pick someone else. What does that prove? The Jets had the 6th pick. They got the best AVAILABLE player who is also someone who happens to fit one of their biggest needs. What else is a team supposed to do?
And by the way, wasn’t Jake Long #1 on the Rams board. I guess they really screwed up by picking Chris Long.
Drob should get 65% of playing time as he should excel in the 4-3. If he is playing great, why would Denver take him out of the lineup, I think they would care more about winning than giving up a 3rd rounder to the Jets.
Gary Myers insight and reporting is incredible, if it werent for reporters like him where would we get stories like that from. (being sarcastic of course)
I can’t stand Gary Myers (aka Frog Face). He never passes up an opportunity to rip the Jets.
SNY quoted KC management that both the Jets and Pats talked to them about moving up to pick Ghoulston. Sounds like the Jets were pretty focused on Ghoulston.
Myers (an idiot with no integrity) and Cimini trash the Jets draft. But imagine if the Pats had moved to 5 and taken Ghoulston. The Newsies would be frothing at the mouth.
As I remember, they didn’t like last year’s moves either. If we end up with another Revis and Harris, we’ll all be ecstatic.
ramble…i couldn’t agree more…and i loved the nick name you gave him…it fits him perfectly…
dak,
Are you psyched or what?
hell yeah im psyched…i cant wait for pre-season…
