Jets Are Fourth Youngest In The NFL

by Mack Rosenberg on May 9th, 2008 at 12:06 pm

Gary Grund from Jets Central makes an interesting observation today, and for those of you that have NFL Network you might already know because he saw it on Total Access. The Jets are the fourth youngest team in the NFL, at 26 years and 115 days. Grund also provides the top seven on the list:

1 – Green Bay Packers-25 years, 300 days
2 – Buffalo Bills-26 years, 66 days
3 – Atlanta Falcons-26 years, 96 days
4 – New York Jets-26 years, 115 days
5 – Indianapolis Colts-26 years, 125 days
6 – Miami Dolphins-26 years, 147 days
7 – San Diego Chargers-26 years, 190 days

Nothing too surprising here, as three teams who had top six picks in the draft are on the list. This tells me that out of the top six draft picks, the teams picking weren’t good the year before simply because of age. The teams on this list are interesting because they tell you just how good college players can be, and how bad they can turn out. The Colts and the Chargers- and recently the Packers- have been successful franchises over the last five years or so, yet they are very young. It just goes to show how important a team’s scouting department is in determining the future of your franchise.

that’s amazing for the talent we have tangini is doing a marvelous job rebuilding.

  2. avatar Steve in Philly says:

I’m sure Favre retiring took about 35 years off the Packers average age.

  3. avatar DCMike says:

It’s amazing that the Colts are on that list. They have been so good for so long. The rest of the top 7 had been bottom feeders until recently (or still are).

  4. avatar mbi says:

To look at it one way three teams who had the top six picks are on the list while three teams on the list were playoff teams and legit superbowl contenders. Its hard to believe the jets are that young considering the free agent moves that have been made, DRob abd Vilma are younger than the guys that were borught in, Faneca, Woody, Richardson, and Jenkins are all 30ish right? I would like to see the leagues youngest teams based on projected starters, I am guessing the Jets would be middle of the pack.

  5. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

who is the oldest player on our team i guess tony richardson?

  6. avatar ramble914 says:

    Jenkins is 28yo.

  7. avatar ramble914 says:

This just flies in the face of everyone who critisized our FA pick ups saying we were becoming an old team. It also debunks the so called experts who said we are trying to win with FA like Washington tried, but the reality is we are really building through the draft, and supplementing our roster with FA.

  8. avatar dakar says:

tangini is doing an excellant job of bringing in talent… now lets see what the OC and DC do with this talent…

  9. avatar MB927LI says:

I’m surprised considering we only had four draft picks in 07 and we have brought in alot of veterans

  10. avatar Pete57 says:

Please note that the “good” teams on that list all have had solid QB play, while the others have not.

  11. avatar billvv says:

So, Pete, you credit or blame a team’s effort entirely on the QB?

  12. avatar EastSideKahaluu says:

I guess it’s no coincidence that because of this, we have core guys around this age- Cotchery, Rhodes and Washington all being 25. I like the balance we seem to have right now of development players and seasoned veterans.
Also, Pete, I would argue that Philip Rivers is not a solid QB. Then again, it might just be because i think he’s a douche bag.

  13. avatar Pete57 says:

Eastside, did Rivers run over your dog? Douche bag is pretty strong. I think 95% of Jet fans would take him over our QB’s.

billvv, I was referring to the articles’ premise that the good teams on the list had drafted good young players in the last 3 drafts. This may be true, but I contend that a more pertinent reason those teams have won is QB play versus the other teams on the list.

  14. avatar dakar says:

i wouldn’t take rivers…to inconsistant for the talent he has at his disposal…referring to the 2 superstars in LT and GATES…just my thoughts…

  15. avatar Reprocity says:

Little off topic but I dont think Norv Turner has gotten enough credit for the job he is diong there. He stepped in, saw the talent that was the and used it the way it was meant to be used… ah if only….

  16. avatar Frank L says:

you guys must be joking – you WOULDN’T take Philip Rivers over Chad “Ragdoll shoulder” Pennington and KC? I would rather have someone being inconsistent in the mediocre to outstanding range than two quarterbacks consistently in the awful to mediocre range. It has been some time since Chad was a really good QB, and now he is 2 shoulder operations and many years later. And KC’s upside is not as good as Rivers’s.

  17. avatar Bent says:

Rivers is a decent enough QB, but he’s absolutely a douchebag.

  18. avatar SackDance99 says:

Rivers is a douchebag, but he out-played Peyton Manning on the road, in a divisional playoff game, without a healthy Gates or LT, so I would say that kind of indicates that he’d be a significant upgrade at QB over Chad and KC…plus, he’s 6-5 (hey, I’m joking, sort of).

  19. avatar Nikolas says:

Breaking news Jets fans!!! Brady has been traded to the Jets and Peyton Manning will sign up as our back up!!
I start to believe that some of you do hate dolphins, babies etc, and I do not mean THE DOLPHINS.

What happened to this blog? It used to be of some quality, …

  20. avatar Mike G says:

Philip Rivers has 43 TD’s in his 2 seasons as a starter, a career quarterback rating of 86.6, and a td/int ratio of almost 2:1. To say that Chad Pennington, or Kellen Clemens, or both, are better than Rivers is disgraceful.

And I suppose he’s a douchebag because he talks trash and shows passion right? yea, what a douchebag, why would you want your quarterback and leader to show passion and intensity? hmmmmm…

  21. avatar Mike G says:

Bent, decent enough quarterback? How does a “decent enough quarterback” make the pro bowl in the AFC? With the likes of Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Carson Palmer, it is almost impossible to make the pro bowl in this conference. Has it ever been harder at any given time for a player to make the pro bowl at quarterback?

  22. avatar Reprocity says:

    I’d rather have drew brees!

  23. avatar Reprocity says:

Lynch made the probowl… I bet Trent Edwards ends up being a better QB than rivers.

  24. avatar Mike G says:

Trent Edwards better than Rivers? that would be shocking to say the least.

  25. avatar Mike G says:

    Reprocity,

What does Lynch making the pro bowl have to do with Rivers? If youre referring to John Lynch, which I assume you are, then that is not a good comparison. John Lynch made the pro bowl over guys like Kerry Rhodes because John Lynch is a household name, and a proven veteran, which translates into pro bowl selection. Philip Rivers on the otherhand made the pro bowl over Tom Brady. Rivers was in his first season, and although a number 1 pick, rivers was not proven, or a household name. So how did Rivers make the pro bowl over Tom Brady? By throwing 22 TD’s with only 9 INT’s and a 92.0 QB rating. Philip Rivers is the real deal. The Jets would be a super bowl contender with Rivers at QB.

  26. avatar Fonzie says:

    Hey Mike G:
Before you bury Chad and Crown Rivers understand the Chad completion %, Yds /att. and QB rating is better than RIvers. Based on those 3 stats who would you say is the best QB

  27. avatar Mike G says:

I’m not burying Chad, i’ve been a chad supporter.

Rivers has a rating of 86.6 in 2 seasons. Penningtons 88.9 is slightly better, but Rivers had 43 TD’s in 2 seasons, Pennington has 45 in the last 4 seasons. It’s not even close, not one gm, coach, or owner would take pennington over rivers.

  28. avatar Fonzie says:

All I want to know is that when Pennington leads us to the playoffs this year are all you Pennington doubters going to diss him or will you jump on his band wagon? I want to HEAR YOU!!!

  29. avatar Fonzie says:

What about the other two stats . They don’t count?

  30. avatar Mike G says:

Like I just said, I’m not a Pennington doubter. He is a good QB and if he wins the starting job in camp then I will support him from the beginning. I think most Jet fans feel the same way.

  31. avatar Mike G says:

    Pennington
    65.6 comp% 7.16 ypa

    rivers
    60.8 comp% 7.04 ypa

Not a big enough different to matter.

  32. avatar Fonzie says:

    Mike G:

All I’m trying to say is that the team is primed to win. This is the best chande we’ve had since the ” exchange” (maybe 20+years) and the team has had the best offseason EVER!!. Chad is the only proven winner we have. We can NOT give this opportunity to QB that has NOT proven he can win (still a rookie?) Lets go JETS!!

  33. avatar Mike G says:

I agree that Pennington gives us the best chance to win now, all im saying is Rivers is a much better QB than pennington

  34. avatar Johnny Styne says:

Fonzie — Pennington played like crap last year even when he wasn’t being rushed and he was without question the proximate cause for Coles’ concussion — Pennington has as much chance of leading the Jets deep into the playoffs in 2008 as Carlos Delgado has of leading the Mets to the World Series –

  35. avatar Rich G says:

First off I want to say that I respect Chad for everything hes done for the Jets and that Doug Brien might just have cheated him and Jet fans out of a S.B.. That was then… This is now… The only stat I care about between the 2 QB’s is the W-L… Chad went 1-7 last year in games he started… Kellen went 3-5… Which should have been 5-3 with BS losses to Baltimore and Washington… Actually 5-2 because he only threw 1 pass in the N.E. game and we all know the result of that play was due to the Leagues 4th worst offensive line… The Baltimore game lies on the shouldersof Justin McCariens and the Washington game wasseriously altered with the Cotchery catch and fumble play… Horrible call by the refs… Kellen is the better QB right now… Chad was then… Kellen is now… I think the team will be alot better with the additions we made in free agency and the draft… I say we let him play behind an improved offensive line and what should be a more stout D!!!

  36. avatar Bent says:

Showing passion and intensity is a good thing. Constant disrespect for opponents, teammates, coaches, fans and officials is being a douchebag in my book.

And Rivers is good. I never said he wasn’t. I was just deliberately vague in my comment about his abilities because I didn’t want to get involved in a pissing match about how good Phil Rivers is, which I don’t see much point to.

  37. avatar Steve in Philly says:

    Ugh Doug Brien.

  38. avatar dakar says:

    rich g

i do agree…i have been saying the same thing to no avail…clemens should have been 5-2…plus we can also put alot of blame on the defense for losing aginst clevland…remember that 31 yard run lewis had against us…he ran over like 5 jet defenders to score a td…just my thoughts…

  39. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

kellen clemens for starting qb.we’re starting this up now who’s with me??

  40. avatar pat d says:

living in los angeles, and traveling to that dump of a stadium in san diego, i have seen philip rivers in eight games. he is not a very good qb. drew brees was much better. i think chad behind this line will be better than kellen. kellin didn’t seem to have the pocket presence that chad has. that being said chad is on the decline and kellin has more upside. we really don’t know what we have in kellin.

  41. avatar pat d says:

about the jets being the 4th youngest team in football. who cares if they don’t win. this west coast football fan bleeds green.

  42. avatar pat d says:

did i say kellin – i meant killen

  43. avatar DSmizzle says:

If Pennington led the JETS to the playoffs…

I’d absolutely enjoy watching the season unfold, but would fully expect (and would in all likelihood see it unfold) Chad to be completely ineffective against the better defenses in the league he would have to face in the NFL playoffs.’

Pittsburgh and the Doug Brien game is a perfect example. I have nightmares of Troy Polemalu — seemingingly in slow motion (maybe since it was Chad’s pass, it was literally slow motion) — plucking a duck out of the air on a sideline pattern, because it took so long to get there.

Someone in one of these threads mentioned (I think) the Buffalo game last year, when Chad completed a very high percentage of passes and they got like 3 points… when you can complete 3 passes and not get a first down, whats the point?!?!?

Bottom line is that IF they somehow returned to being a good-to-very-good offensive unit with Chad at QB, and made the playoffs, I’d be very happy but frustrated and worried about what will happen in the playoffs.

As has been pointed out ad naseaum on these boards, you don’t necessarily need a top-5 pick to bring in the QB of your future. I’d be happy with that scenario unfolding and would still advocate for Chad to be replaced, if we had the right guy on the roster.

This is why I hope Kellen is a real NFL QB and will — in a fully open and fair QB race — beat out Chad. He has much more zip on his passes and if he can emulate some of the things Chad can do from a mental and game-management standpoint, could put up numbers that more resembled Rivers’ than Chads’ (in terms of TD’s-INT’s, the capacity to put up big numbers in playoff games, etc.).

A long time ago, Chad did have the ability (despite his shortcomings) to drop 42 points on the Colts in a playoff game. However, its not the same JETS team nor the same Chad.

  44. avatar Bent says:

While you make a good point, the Pittsburgh game is not the best example. Having watched that again recently, I was surprised to see that Chad actually made more throws into tight windows with more zip in that game than in any in recent memory, despite the injury. Nothing was open all day (perhaps because the Steelers knew the Jets wouldn’t go deep due to Herm/Hackett/Rotator Cuff) and yet he did make some impressive completions. Of course, I am not saying it was a great performance because the offense only scored 6 points (although that was also at least partly due to the extremely low-risk offense that Herm and Hackett employed after the TD returns put them in front).

One brilliant writer (guess who) described the play you remembered as a floated interception like this:

“On the Jets next possession, Pennington throws an interception. What happened on this play was that Becht ran out to the flat and Pennington threw over the middle to Moss. Polamalu (one of Chad’s favourite (sic) targets this season) had to decide whether to follow Becht or stay underneath. Needless to say, he stayed under and made the pick (and a long return to set up a Bus TD and a 10-0 lead).

The blame on this play goes three ways. First of all, Penny made the wrong decision and didn’t do a good enough job of fooling Polamalu. Secondly, Becht needed to get out there quicker, so that Polamalu was drawn further across the field and finally, the design of the play was clearly flawed because (a) Becht probably doesn’t have the athletic ability to get out there any faster and (b) Becht is no threat. Penny is seen shaking his head on the sideline, clearly thinking “If I’d have passed that to Anthony, it could have been an incompletion.” “

  45. avatar DSmizzle says:

Well, Bent, one problem with Chad and his physical limitations is that he almost HAS TO BE perfect mentally, which isn’t really possible, in a playoff game (let alone a regular season game against Buffalo).

Also, I used to despise Hackett and think he was unnecessarily deciding to play conservative football despite everyone calling for more long plays and excitement. However, I read one opinion — I believe in the print media a few years back after Hackett left (though I do not recall the source) — that postulated that perhaps Hackett was actually an offensive GENIOUS who helped a guy like Chad with great game management skills and mental capacity become a quality NFL starter despite not having an NFL arm, even BEFORE his injuries.

Think about it: people knew Pennington probably didn’t have a top-flight NFL arm before he was picked in the 1st round of the NFL draft. He was throwing quite poorly during his rookie season (certainly I remember commenting after a public Hofstra practice that the rookie from Marshal seemed to have a pop-gun arm, particularly compared to Vinny T), and never showed he was a consistent threat to beat a D’s deep coverage (or a threat at all, with very few exceptions). Essentially, Chad & Hackett were able to squeeze as much as possible out of Chad’s arm, rather than Hackett being an arch-conservative who wouldn’t call plays with more potential b/c his goal in life was to cheat the JETS’ fans out of having fun.

  46. avatar Bent says:

Hackett designed (or at least recreated) a briliant offense. My problem was always with his playcalling, which became sooooo predictable. However, when they finally made the change, it became apparent that the play calling may have been more down to Herm’s conservativeness. You could say it was down to Pennington, but the playcalling was just the same when Chad was hurt and Vinny or Bollinger took over, so I don’t think that is the case.

As conservative as our offense is perceived to be now (and with a worse offensive line, no Anderson, Moss, Chrebet, Martin and Jordan a less explosive offense should probably be expected), they do take more chances, as evidenced by Chad’s higher interception numbers, particularly in scoring range. The jury is out on whether an injection of talent will make this offense as good as the one from that era.

  47. avatar Mike G says:

Is this what jet fans are going to do? Rip on other teams good players, in this case quarterbacks. Why? because we’re jealous that we don’t have Philip Rivers? It is not a discussion if he is good or not, it is a fact that he is a good nfl quarterback, and ill say it again, if Philip Rivers was our qb going into the season we would be a superbowl contender.

    Pat d,
you have seen rivers in 8 games, I have seen him too. to say he is not a very good qb is idiotic. His numbers, and his performance in the playoffs say otherwise. I dont know what 8 games youre referring to, but he looked pretty damn good in the playoffs this past year before his unjury. Lets not become the type of fans who just rag on other teams players without reason.

  48. avatar Bent says:

Actually, I am not usually the type of guy to rip on other team’s players, but pretty much everyone else agrees Rivers is a jerk too. (Just google Rivers + Douchebag and you’ll find loads of examples…alternatively read KSK). I wouldn’t have mentioned it though except I wanted to defend the other guy that said it and got blasted for it.

  49. avatar pat d says:

i didn’t mean to come off sounding like i’m ripping rivers. but everyone keeps mentioning rivers over and over. i guess my point is there are a lot of better quarterbacks. it’s not like the jets are going to get rivers anyway. i know quarterback is a need but i didn’t see anyone in the draft that could have addressed this. ryan may be good but i wouldn’t pick him that high in the draft. not when a brady quinn will be available.

  50. avatar Mike G says:

I wont sit here and claim that Rivers isnt a douchebag, but lets be honest, if our quarterback was talking trash to fans and other teams I would love it. I can see how people think he is a douchebag though.
pat d, are there really a lot of better quarterbacks than philip rivers?
    -Tom Brady
    -Ben roethlisberger
    -Carson Palmer
    -Derek Anderson
    -Peyton Manning
    -David Garrard
    -Tony Romo
    -Drew Brees
    -Marc Bulger
    -Matt Hasselbeck

thats 10 qbs who I think could be considered better than Rivers. Some are obvious, some are debateable, but either way, Rivers is a top 10-12 qb in this league, and hes younger than most on that list.
