Kris Jenkins Loves Truffle Oil & His New Role
Kris Jenkins continues to not surprise us. In the latest development, the Jets new 350 pound nose tackle and resident culture vulture talked to Jane McManus at the Journal News about the benefits of cooking egg-white omelettes in truffle oil. That’s right, truffle oil.
“It’s olive oil but they infuse it with truffles so it’s heart-healthy.”
Having tried some truffles and truffle oil last year in Florence, I can say that the stuff is freaking good, so I can’t mock him too much. Still, it’s pretty amusing to think about a guy his size at home in the kitchen, humming Vivaldi and making a truffle oil omelette.
So … how ’bout some talk about the 3-4 and playing nose?
“I love the challenge because now I have to be, basically, the stud. You got two gaps, you can’t let anybody block you – double teams, whams, everything you got to take it head-on. It’s different but it lets me kind of express myself. In a 4-3 defense you’re basically restricted to that one gap. In the 3-4 defense I get to express myself a little bit more, show a little bit more of what I’m capable of doing.”
I still think he’ll see some one-gap responsibilities this season, but he’s right in his assessment of taking on double teams and sitting back more and protecting both sides of center from the ballcarrier. Even so, expect Keyon Coleman and Shaun Ellis to benefit from his presence as he takes up more blockers. Remember even with a guy like Jenkins it’s not DEs jobs in a 3-4 to rack up sacks, that’s for the linebackers. If Ellis gets more than five, he’s had an excellent season. For those that are concerned that Ellis is a bust, watch and see how he plays with Jenkins on one side before determining one way or another.

Bassett:
With Kris there Ellis is going to have a great year. If he had what , 5 sacks seeing a lot of double teams last year, I say 18 to 20 sacks for the three of them is very possible this year.
I still seay we will come close to breaking
continued….. very close to breaking our club record on sacks this year.
NFL network is going to show the jets game against the steelers at 4:00 pm today
Bassett, I hope you are right. My study of game films last year indicated that DRobb was taking on two guys and although he was sealed, if Kenyon and Ellis had not been continually pushed back or the backers had been filing the holes the defense should have worked. IMHO, a lot of the improvement in the second half came from Harris helping to seal holes. But Ellis and Kenyon both continued to be pushed back.
I don’t see how Jenkins helps them. I sure hope I am wrong and you are right..
Harlan
I agree with Harlan’s assesment that our DE really underachieved last year. I know Coleman led all linemen in tackles but at around fifty I’d say that was a weak year for linemen. Jason Ferguson had 75 tackles in 2003 which is a good seaon for a DT but Holding the point or in a 3-4 case both gaps is something our DE were really bad at last year. I think with the additions everyone will have a fair chance at being evaluated because Jenkins will draw the double teams and Ellis and Colemen will be left 1 on 1 and so will Bryan Thomas. Same goes with the QBs as well!
Hey Fonzie,
I think most Jets Fans will be happy if the Jets attain a 50% increase in the amount of sacks (45) and especially pressures on the QB. I like to see the opposing QBs hurry their throws and have “happy feet”
instead of having all the time in the world and picking us apart.
GO JETS!!!
Jenkins is just part of the reason the Jets defense will improve this year. Don’t forget we got rid of 2 undersized linebackers who did not fit the 3-4 defense (Vilma and Hobson) and replaced them with Gholston and Pace. Hopefully they will both become playmakers that opposing OCs have to gameplan for and thus free up other players to perform better.
I know there is a small group of people that think that the ends had a down year i feel that d rob was a joke in the 3-4 i mean jenkins barring an injury has a chance to be very special this year he can be an anchor able to stop the run and also command a double team to open passing lanes for blitzers this is good for gholston and the others to really bring the wood
Our “D” is light years away from last year and it all starts with Kriss over Rob. If we don’t expect Kriss to have a great season (all-pro?) then our season is in trouble. In my opinion one Kriss = two DRobs. It will be like having one extra man on the field. When you factor in the additions of Pace and Vernon over Vilma and Hobson it will be the equivalent of adding one and a half to two extra players in ability. Now add in Harris and Rhodes. How can anyone have any doubts? Our defense is twice as good as last years including the second half of the season when we started to jell. I’m not a mathimatician but my Jets math this year comes to this: 1+2=6 over last years 1+2=(weak)3
Jet-ison:
Both your threads are right on however, I’ll consider 45 sacks to be a fair, not good, year for the players we have. Right off the bat, we have TWO players that will command double teams, Kriss AND Vernon. That will leave the likes of Pace, Rhodes, Harris, Thomas, Bowens or Barton (sleeper) free to attack, attack, attack, attack, attack, and attack. In the words of Kriss Jenkins “they (QB’s) can’t run away from ALL of us”
I would be happy with 45 sacks and some semi constant pressure as well. As for Ellis, he played well with Abraham on the other side of the line is in his contract year and has been mailing it in ever since. He’s not a “bust”, but lets just say his last contract was not the best signing. I am not a fan of Ellis. Anyone know when is current contract expires?
Ellis has 3 years left: 3m, 4.65m, 3.35m
We have added one rookie passrusher this year guys. I don’t know what are all these sack predictions. Jenkins is here to improve the run defense and basically anchor the middle. Calvin pace is not a pass rusher. He has victor hobson sack #’s and is here for his 100 tackles @ outside linebacker. I think vernon will be great as the season goes along but he is still only a rookie guys. I have high hopes for this season but we should stay realistic. One rookie passrusher with great potential is what we added to the passrush.
Thanks Bent
I agree with al (although last time I expressed that opinion I was accused of not being a Jets fan). Doesn’t mean I’m not optimistic about this defense, which should be a lot better overall.
18-20 sacks for the starting defensive line of a 3-4 would be pretty much unprecendented in this century, if I’m not mistaken. From the team that one year ago had one of the league’s worst pass rushes, that’s asking a bit much (and when was Ellis double teamed last year? I must have missed that).
I love the optimism though, and if they can approach these numbers that would be great. I just don’t want to see fans complaining that players are not meeting expectations, when those expectations are unrealistic to start with.
Bent,
I think the media has convinced people that the jets see a passrusher in pace. Mangini said pace reminds him of Mo Lewis who was a great linebacker for us but not a sack artist by any means. I think he will be a significant improvement over hobson but we shouldn’t expect a passrushing demon.
With regard to C.Pace not being a pass rusher:
I am thinking that maybe Pace would be a good fit at MLB next to Harris. Pace has great size at 6-4 and 270 lbs. and has good speed, even exceptional for a MLB. The two OLB’s should be Gholston and B. Thomas, who I believe will have a bounce back season. That would give us a real potent LB corp.
” I know Coleman led all linemen in tackles but at around fifty I’d say that was a weak year for linemen. Jason Ferguson had 75 tackles in 2003 which is a good seaon for a DT”
You are getting mixed up with total tackles and solo tackles. Coleman had a better year than Ferguson’s 2003 season:
JF in 2003 – 52 solo tackles, 75 total
KC in 2008 – 55 solo tackles, 83 total
Perhaps Coleman is better than you think?
Pace is – to me – a prototypical strongside outside linebacker. Gholston and BT are better fits on the weakside. I would prefer not to move Pace to somewhere he’d be less effective just to get BT and VG on the field at the same time (which will probably happen anyway on passing downs). We’re probably better off with Barton there for now. Granted, it might be something they do here and there, but not full time.
Gholston, being the rookie he is, will have to play to his strength early on. Meaning he will see the field less than Pace or BT. But that also means a fresher defense as we start to build depth.
I agree the strongside is the best spot for pace. Does this mean that B. thomas is done is the big question. We know barton is gone after this year so do the jets invest in another linebacker next year or do they move Pace inside for a year and utilize B thomas for another year and then address this area as his contract winds down. I guess those decisions depend on how B thomas plays this year.
Thomas should be on the weakside. He may have only played strongside because Hobson would have been even worse on the strongside due to his lack of size or speed. However, the Jets do mix it up a lot and don’t always follow convention (ie Hobson inside and Barton outside made more sense to me).
I’d guess that BT will start on the weakside for a year and then Gholston will be the starter from 2009 onwards, hopefully increasing his playing time throughout the 2008 season.
Bent:
Quoting Pace “Playing 4-3 was a difficult scheme where he was sometimes overmatched, playing the 3-4 he can now pick the fights he knows he can win. He loves rushing the edged and feels it was a position designed for him.” He will get 10 or more sacks this year.
Ellis got 5 sacks with no help, negative (backwards) pass rush and mucho, mucho double teams. Jenkins over DRob makes all the difference in the world. How many sacks do you think Ellis willget this year? With Vernon and Pace rushing the edge how much attention is Coleman going to get?
Al:
I don’t drink media cool aid. I’ve been following the Jets before they singned Joe Willie. As you know Mangini will be the last guy to divulge any specific strengths or roles of his players, but listen to the player interviews and you will get a better idea of who they are. We beat out the Tuna for Pace because of his impact potential to disrupt, same as Jenkins. If anyone ones the value of this type player I assume Tuna does. Pace will raise hell !!!
HAHAHA. Have fun with Jenkins fat #@$ this year suckers. He looks great on paper, but he baloons up and gets injured EVERY YEAR.
GO PANTHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
p.s. The Jets Suck.
Was Jake just talking about Delholme? Him and Chad are the Eggs of the NFL.
