I don’t drink media cool aid. I’ve been following the Jets before they singned Joe Willie. As you know Mangini will be the last guy to divulge any specific strengths or roles of his players, but listen to the player interviews and you will get a better idea of who they are. We beat out the Tuna for Pace because of his impact potential to disrupt, same as Jenkins. If anyone ones the value of this type player I assume Tuna does. Pace will raise hell !!!

Ellis got 5 sacks with no help, negative (backwards) pass rush and mucho, mucho double teams. Jenkins over DRob makes all the difference in the world. How many sacks do you think Ellis willget this year? With Vernon and Pace rushing the edge how much attention is Coleman going to get?

Thomas should be on the weakside. He may have only played strongside because Hobson would have been even worse on the strongside due to his lack of size or speed. However, the Jets do mix it up a lot and don’t always follow convention (ie Hobson inside and Barton outside made more sense to me).

I’d guess that BT will start on the weakside for a year and then Gholston will be the starter from 2009 onwards, hopefully increasing his playing time throughout the 2008 season.

I agree the strongside is the best spot for pace. Does this mean that B. thomas is done is the big question. We know barton is gone after this year so do the jets invest in another linebacker next year or do they move Pace inside for a year and utilize B thomas for another year and then address this area as his contract winds down. I guess those decisions depend on how B thomas plays this year.

Gholston, being the rookie he is, will have to play to his strength early on. Meaning he will see the field less than Pace or BT. But that also means a fresher defense as we start to build depth.

You are getting mixed up with total tackles and solo tackles. Coleman had a better year than Ferguson’s 2003 season:

JF in 2003 – 52 solo tackles, 75 total
KC in 2008 – 55 solo tackles, 83 total

Perhaps Coleman is better than you think?

Pace is – to me – a prototypical strongside outside linebacker. Gholston and BT are better fits on the weakside. I would prefer not to move Pace to somewhere he’d be less effective just to get BT and VG on the field at the same time (which will probably happen anyway on passing downs). We’re probably better off with Barton there for now. Granted, it might be something they do here and there, but not full time.

With regard to C.Pace not being a pass rusher:

I am thinking that maybe Pace would be a good fit at MLB next to Harris. Pace has great size at 6-4 and 270 lbs. and has good speed, even exceptional for a MLB. The two OLB’s should be Gholston and B. Thomas, who I believe will have a bounce back season. That would give us a real potent LB corp.

I think the media has convinced people that the jets see a passrusher in pace. Mangini said pace reminds him of Mo Lewis who was a great linebacker for us but not a sack artist by any means. I think he will be a significant improvement over hobson but we shouldn’t expect a passrushing demon.
