News: Goodell Looking to Crack Down on Fans?

by Bassett on May 26th, 2008 at 3:57 am

After Gate D and the many brawls at NFL games, Goodell has released a statement saying that it’s not just the management and players that need to behave.

“We want everyone to be able to come to our stadiums, behave properly, enjoy this experience but don’t ruin it for others,” said Goodell. “We will be focusing on that, including the implementation of an NFL fan conduct policy which we will have out prior to the season.”

We’ll have to wait and see how this plays out, but my thoughts are that it will involve fighting, inebriation, and exposing oneself in stairwells.

If the Week 17 finale against the Fish has playoff implications, then Goodell’s directive won’t be worth the paper it’s printed on –

The fans are a really important equation in sports. Drinking alcohol is common in every Stadium and that can be a problem for those who’ve had too much.
Goddell got any plans to have stadiums stop selling drinks??

I am all for civilized behavior by the fans ….but Goodell has been a fake!!
The Pacman Jones of the NFL world have shown disregard for the NFL rules but Bill Belicheat has made it an art!! Now we have another scandal with the IR players; and what Goodell is doing for that? Nothing!!!

I suspect also some racisism…….and hence I have no respect for Goodell .
1.He burned the videotape and notes evidence?
2.He never said publicly that Belicheat was punished for braking the rules since 2001. He let be understood that the punishment was for cheating in the 2006 season and the Jets game.
3.If he knew that the cheating had started since the 2001 season then either he lied to the public or if not, where is the additional punishment as he declared in public? That upon additional evidence hereserved the right for additional punsihment
    4. Now he ignores the issue, a violation of NFL rules, of the IR players.

I do not trust Goodell . I do not think he has much integrity.

Its hard to control rowdy fans when chances are that they’re drunk. The booze has gone a little too far at sporting events across the nation. I just watch the game, im not much of a drinker.

This is really just a PR move by Goodell. Higher blood alcohol content always = more stupid decisions and general rowdiness.

If they really want to stop this, they’ll cut back on beer sales at games. Since the NFL is practically sponsored and supported by the beer industry, that’s likely never to happen.

After they institute the new “fan conduct policy” They’ll kick several fans out of stadiums permanently for show and then when the press stops focusing on it, everything will go back to the way it was.

Being British, I feel I am somewhat of an authority on this issue.

Stopping beer sales won’t work, because troublemakers will just get drunk before they even get to the game, so the problems will just start earlier. Is the whole thing a shift in culture, or is it still just a few isolated incidents?

I really hope the NFL isn’t heading down the same road as English football, but from my perspective, it could be starting on the slipperly slope. I just hope they can curb it before there is a serious incident where people get hurt, unlike in Europe, where they over-reacted following the Heisel and Hillsborough tragedies and ended up intensifying hostilities even more by their efforts to contain them.

They should stop the beer sales and let everyone smoke pot.
