Remember Shane Olivea? He of course is the Long Island native and former Chargers Tackle (with very short arms) that the Jets had a passing interest in before signing Damien Woody. Apparently he’s expected to join a team next week, but no one seems to know exactly where.
The 49ers have inquired about some possible veteran free-agent pickups. They asked about Shane Olivea recently, but were told that Olivea has already agreed to terms with another club. Olivea, who lost his starting job and fell out of favor with the Chargers, is expected to sign with that team in June.
Sealed expected deals that both the player and team haven’t openly talked about? It’s not a stretch to say that this is just the sort of manner in which Tannenbaum operates.
Olivea was a Chargers starter, but lost his job over the past season as he fell out of favor. It’s probably just an interesting note for Jets fans, but could Olivea have agreed to a contract that will kick in once they make some (if any) June 1 cuts?
Should he sign with New York, Olivea wouldn’t likely be a starter, but he would provide the unit some more depth who could play tackle or guard, but we’re likely getting ahead of ourselves here.
Either way, we’ll keep you posted ..

Would love to see this happen! Been saying on some posts in the past my biggest concern is our Oline depth. If Woody doesnt pan out who will take his place or if someone gets injured and is out for the rest of the season. Dont have much faith in anyone on the current roster so this would provide the depth ive been looking for!

This guy kicked my beehind in high school! Have followed his career and have rooted for him since. Good kid.

This would be great O-Line depth. Because God knows if a starter goes down all we have are project big man like Jacob “The Gender” Bender and that fat ass we drafted in round 7 this year on the bench. I just hope if they sign him it’s like a 1-2 year deal and they DON’T overpay

too GOOD to be true! come home SHANE…

3 years later and we still havent replaced McKenzie! This is why we are not an elite team. Bender didnt even get a chance at LG last year and thats not bad… that’s Schlegal bad! At least parcells replaced Young with Fabini and then replaced Jumbo with Fabini and then McKenzie was slotted to take over at LT. Thats Depth and that’s good planning. We dont have any of that!

Ok they did draft Mangold to replace Mawae but what if Mangold didn’t last till our pick? And what if Mangold didn’t pan out. That’s more of a gamble than a plan.

Reprocity, you have to admit it’s a start. Everybody comes with a “what if.”
-
Reprocity, I would more say that we *didn’t* have any of that. It takes a while to rebuild after a disastrous system tears all the success down (yes I mean Edwards & Bradway). I think we are dong better now.

With Woody’s ability to play any OL position, Olivea would provide great veteran depth. If any OL starter gets injured, Woody could fill in and Olivea could take over RT. And, that’s without counting on the young guys. I think one or two of the younger guys will show promise to be groomed as fill ins, but I would prefer as little on the job training as possible, esp. since Mangold and Brick are still learning. Tannenebaum is learning. There’s no reason to let a veteran OL hold up the team, like Kendall did. OL depth is necessary for any NFL team with pretensions of becoming an elite franchise.

We need Olivea – do not want to see a good season torpedoed by an injury

Clayton on ESPN.com says the Jets have signed Musa Smith. Another power runner.

Bill & SJF: The question I have is… Would you have drafted Mangold then Released Mawae first or would you do what they did? I agree it is a start and also with Toon that we do need Olivea. In the last 2 drafts the only 2 OL we drafted were 7th rd picks. We brought in 2 guys who are over 30 which will help, but I would call that a fix instead of a solution. It’s almost like what they did with the DL last year bringing in Wadsworth, Haynes, john Doe, and any other former first round pick they could find? I will say Faneca and Woody are worlds better though.

I wrestled this bohemith in High School and he whooped my a$$. Bring him in. He was on the starting O-Line that produced the most rushing TD’s in NFL History
-
Sign him, I wanted him before we signed Woody, I can’t believe no one has signed him yet………..

Olivia is a PA native, anyway, yes we need to sign him now, I don’t know what happened in San Diego, but being ditched like that leaves a man with a lot of fire in the belly, lets face it injuries are going to happen and everyone is right, our depth is extremely thin we have one guy Montgomery who can be a step in but the rest are hopefuls and projects that need more time for development Olivia can be the safety net and is defiantly needed.
-
Sorry Jason..Olivea was born and raised in Long Beach NY.. don.t know where you got PA from..

No matter what team he goes to, well exception of the Raiders I will be rooting for him. I am a major Charger fan but he was one of the players I liked to see in action great player at the beginning of the year hopefully he can show every body that he can be who he was.
