Daily Links: Prisco Ranks DLs
Posted on June 4th, 2008 by Bassett
- Prisco thinks Ellis and Coleman are 4-3 ends.
- Former Jet LaMont Jordan is on the block.
- Eric Allen recaps Mangini’s camp in Hartford.
- Ocho Cinco is “of course” going to be at camp. Funny how tunes change.

Maybe i’m confused… but Ellis and Coleman sure look like 3-4 ends to me. Julius Peppers, Osi U, Dwight Freeney, these guys all have body types a lot more like Vernon than like Ellis or Coleman
i am with you DCMike … i thought the same thing but wanted someone else to mention it first.
sure ellis was a carryover, but i don’t know how 6-4 plus 290ish players are 4-3 ends … maybe ellis would be better in a one-gap, but i think he’ll settle nicely with Jenkins helping out now.
And Coleman was brought from Dallas, where he played, you guessed it, end in a 3-4. But that Prisco really knows what he is talking about, doesn’t he?
And would anyone here rank the NE front at number 3 (or 4, not sure which)? Sounds like he is once again jumping on the bandwagon. If he wanted them top 10, sure, but I really wouldn’t put them in the top five. That’s not all bias talking, as I would probably take a few teams D over theirs.
Bassett and DC Mike, I am not sure for which style Defense Ellis and Coleman are best. Last year, both were weak links for us. Coleman got a lot of tackles — he was consistently pushed back far enough to make lots of them 5-8 yards beyond the LOS. Ellis also seemed to be pushed back frequently (and he did not make tackles). In fact, he was pushed back more than DRobb who most folks complained about for reasons I cannot fathom (other than his contract).
If these guys cannot hold the LOS, our backers will have a hard time regardless of who they are as will Jenkins.

I thought coleman had a pretty good season. I need to hit up the Football Outsider guys for the stats (can’t wait for their book anymore!!) and see if i can get it … i;ll let you know how they stacked up.
Coleman is definitely a 3-4 end. Ellis is a 4-3 strongside end, which usually translates well in the 3-4 anyway. Anyone with me in hoping that we see Pouha out there with Jenkins every now and then??
As far as the Patrionts D-line, I don’t think he is being too biased. Woolfolk is the best 3-4 nose tackle in my mind. Seymour had a down season but he’s still good. Ty Warren is a solid player and Jarvis Green is a really good backup 3-4 end.
Bilal, I’d LOVE to see PoooHA! on the field with Jenkins but I wanted to also see Robertson With him. It’s weird seeing our D line ranked ahead of Tampa Bays? I would rather have Jordan back as our 3rd RB and do away with Chatman and Musa, and let some rookie have a chance for special teams. Less money and more upside.
We are ranked at 22. Boy are we going to surprise some people.
Having watched Lamont Jordan the last 2 years, it seems clear that he should resume his prior role as a backup to Curtis Martin.
Coleman LEAD ALL OF DE’S IN TACKLES LAST SEASON. HE DID HIS JOB AND GOT 87 TACKLES. With kris jenkins as a NT, which is basically the leader of the defense, we should be MUCH improved. Also, Thomas, Pace and Gholston can all rush the passer well. And even though hes lost it a bit, Ellis can still get some sacks. I wouldn’t be surpriesed if we end up being a top-10 defense in football.
The Pats that high?!? I like their front 3, but age is really showing in their 4 LBs. Vrabel’s sack numbers were good, but his overall play was mediocre. Bruschi and Seau are way past their primes and Adalious can’t do it on his own. Isn’t it damning that the Jets’ worst starting LB, Hobson, will be an ILB starter for the Pats?
Harlan gets the voodoo doll for ragging on Coleman, again. He was the most consistent D-lineman for the Jets last season, led the NFL in tackles for a D-lineman and was hampered by the Jets’ worst run-stopping and pass-rushing LB, Hobson. Plus, he was one of the few front 7 players (along with Harris) that actually improved as the season progressed. All of this he accomplished in his first season as a starter. Also, most teams ran right against the Jets or cut-back up the middle, so Coleman was not the target. The few times I recall teams running left, Coleman was pretty good. Overall, if he wasn’t good, he was at least mediocre, and with Jenkins and better LB play, he could be a very pleasant surprise.

i would love to have jordan back on the team to…i think he just had enough of oakland…i think he still good…he just wants out…like randy moss wanted out…imo i think he’s alot better than TJ…BUT THATS JUST ME…
Honestly, when has Pete Prisco ever said anything smart?
Our DEs are bigger than Minny’s DEs!

It would be great to get Jordan back, but no doubt as a backup to Jones. Jets fans will be suprised what Jones does this year behind our new o-line.
Coleman IS underrated in this article, and by many, but Ellis in my mind is underrated a ton by JETS fans. The guys has been a pretty steady producer over his career, with his real dip in sacks coming in the 3-4 after Mangini took over.
He isn’t ideal for the 3-4, but he’s been a “good soldier” and is far from their weak spot. All-in-all, I think he’s been a good, competent DE, at times very good (earlier in his career with approx 12 sacks).
Using this scale: Eight wins – Miami, Arizona, Oakland, KC, St.L, Denver, SF, Miami again.
Questionable – Cincinnatti, Buffalo, Tennessee, Buffalo again, Seattle.
Losses – NE, SD, NE again.
Still don’t see how the Jets can miss the playoffs unless they just can’t beat ANY of the questionable teams. Then they’re eight and eight and still the over.
