Wesley Walker Benefit to Fight Lowe Syndrome

by Bassett on June 5th, 2008 at 12:36 pm

UPDATE: Just putting this back to the top of the pile due to the time sensitivity of the event tonight on Long Island to benefit this worthy charity.

Credit to RIch Cimini, who has posted this on his blog too.

Steve, a friend of the blog asked if we could get the word out on this worthy cause and we’re glad to oblige. Please help if you can, either by attending this event, or giving to the cause.

Former Jets star WR Wesley Walker, is now a physical education teacher at Park View Elementary School in Kings Park, L.I., and is helping out one of his students, an 8-year-old boy named Matthew Degori.

When he was 1, Matthew was diagnosed with Lowe Syndrome, a terminal illness in which there is no known cure. Lowe is a genetic disease that affects the kidneys, brain, eyes, bones and muscles, with several physical and mental handicaps associated with the disease.

To help his student, tomorrow night Thursday, June 5, Walker will be signing autographs and posing for pictures at a fundraiser for Matthew. It’s a dinner-dance, and it will take place at Verdi’s on Old Country Road in Westbury, L.I., from 6:30 to 11 p.m. Tickets are $50. For more information, call 516-578-6513. Or you can check out Matthew’s Web site: matthewdegorifoundation.org.“He’s a great kid and this is for a great cause,” Walker told Steve.

This is great stuff. Since I’ve been a fan (virtually my whole life), I’ve known there have been a lot of top-notch people within the organization.

I know a kid I went to law school with (Wayne Chrebet/Lance Shulters/DeMingo Graham/Marques Colston University, or Hofstra U, where the JETS had heretofore operated from) who had a disability that made walking long distances a real chore. He wanted to go to the gym one day, in the driving rain, and was struggling his way accross campus.

I was leaving the gym and I saw him. He said “I just got a ride accross campus from Curtis Martin, who picked me up when he saw me leaving my dorm”.

Kevin Mawae was also a great guy. I met he and his wife, and they’re great people who do good things in their communities.

I’m only 27 so Wesley Walker’s prime wasn’t part of my viewing experience as a JETS fan, but this is consistent with the kind of guys that’ve been on the team over the years.

/I’m ashamed that I haven’t been to Chrebets’ Bar yet. Heard its good food and a good bar.
