Adonis Arrives

As has been noted, today is Gholston’s first day with the vets (I think) which is also the last day of OTAs, sadly.  Mangini told the press yesterday that they had been talking to Vernon every day, and they were sending him tapes of the practice and such.

All the same, it’s clear that Mangini was enthused to finally get him back to Hempstead, even quipping that he forgot what Gholston looked like — which seems impossible once you see a picture like this one.

Gholston will have an uphill battle in learning his assignments between now and camp, but hopefully any contract issues will resolve themselves before camp actually starts.  Should Gholston miss more time with the team, it very well might set progress back further.

Mangini also noted that the same issue didn’t trip up the team’s other firstround Buckeye Nick Mangold much.  The difference though in my mind is that there really wasn’t anyone on the roster ahead of Mangold other than Trey Teague, who got injured anyway.  In this case, we’re talking about two veterans in Thomas and Pace who are looking to prove they weren’t both one year wonders.  It will be interesting to see how quickly Gholston catches up.

  1. Holly Crap. Is anyone else a bit worried how a kid that young got himself to look like that?

  2. Yeah, I’m a little concerned he’s taking the juice. I’m praying he’s just a pysical freak of nature.

  3. I was terrified he was before the draft. If he is he is our lil roid rager now. Plus he could have used at one point and stopped. If he stayed a weightroom junkie he could keep that body. I asked a professional lifter.

  4. Heard he is all natural and hates taking things like medicine and other pills. Think he is just a physical freak like Lebron James in the NBA. Man Child! Remember he was discovered by his High School Footbal Coach when his coach walked by him in the halls and thought he was a students father. This was during his sophmore year of H.S.

  5. I cant wait to sick our new pet on T Brady… I feel like we got a prized pitbull for M Vick’s backyard

  6. The man is incredible! If his talant match his physique…..then Tom Brady will learn what respect is!!

  7. Pffft, big deal! I see that body every day when I look in the mirror …

… you know, because I got that picture tacked up there, with my face taped over Gholston’s …

/how long do I have to keep using the Wii Fit to get there? In years, thanks …

  8. I hope he is a physical freak, and that this all came naturally, because even if he doens’t get caught by the league for using steroids, but he used them to achieve this he will have problems staying healthy. The juice can puff up your muscles plenty, but tendons and ligaments, not so much. They stay the same size they were genetically pre determined to be. Now we put this extra large body in motion to collide with other extra large bodys, bad things happen to normal size tendons and ligaments.

See David Boston, former NFL WR.

  9. I’ve said it over and over again about Gholston, with this picture in mind.

Not quite sure its possible naturally. In addition, NFL lifting isn’t all that “bicep-centric”, so it would appear that he is not only doing quite a bit of biceps, but they’re also puffed out to super-human proportions.

Anyone who has ever been on a legitimate football lifting program notices the unmistakable lack of emphasis on things like having big biceps… sure, you get your reps in… but its all about the explosion lifts.

Gholston looks like one of the Guidos you see at the gym who are clearly on steroids and who scream and stuff while lifting next to little old ladies (although unlike Gholston, they don’t lift their legs so they have to wear warmups or else everyone would see they have chicken legs).

If you lift weights or have powerlifted or have been around steroid users (hint hint), you know what one looks like.

  10. Bah humbug to Wii Fit. I’m still pounding away at my Power Pad, playing Track and Field.

  11. I don’t know if he’s on anything but I’ve also been around gyms, weightlifters, steroid users, etc, and he’s not crazy big like others I’ve seen. My concern would be that for his size he is incredibly cut, low body fat. Again, we don’t know if he’s a freak.

  12. Like most of you, I’ve also wondered if he was using PED’s, but we may never know. I suppose it is possible to just be huge like that, but it would take a lot of work and discipline. Just look at Thomas Jones, he’s just as big and hasn’t tested positive for anything during his time in the league. So we have to assume its natural until he tests positive.

  13. BEEEEEEEEEEAST

  14. Neither He nor Jones has generated so much as a whisper in NFL circles, aside from you guys, that is! I’d have to assume they’re clean at this point.

  15. But can he play? Heis ripped, but did we get ripped?

  16. Let’s hope it’s not the Juice and its aunatural, because if its natural then he is a freak of nature and shuld wreak havoc on the field.

IMO, its not the juice, I say this because of his combine performance. The juice has a way of enhancing some things but decrease other things. Not only is he strong, but he is fast, agile, and he can jump. This goes along with sec108’s post about ligaments, and tendons.

  17. ramble, good point. Although I am sure steriods and HGH will get you results, you don’t necessarily need them. Look at all the junk they have at GNC or even at the local supermarket. That stuff can make you huge as well.

  18. Genetics, proper diet and an unbelievablea mount of working out equals Vernon Gholston. He has been into working out since Junior High School. This is before he was recruited for his high school football team. Also, he was not in a family situation to financially be able to afford steroids on the basis required to have maintained not just his physique but the strenght /health of his tendons and ligaments. If he juiced up and stopped, he would have had an injury prone college career.

  19. you know…i remember when people thought i was on the sauce…but what everyone failed to realize was…i worked out 3-5 hours a day 5-7 days a week…so when i saw my accussers i made a deal…

lets go to the DRs. office and i’ll have a blood test done…if i have sauce in my system you can kick my asss…but if i dont…then i kick your asss and you pay the DR bill…not 1 accepted the deal…

point is…not everyone who’s jacked up sauces…but out of everyone i know…i was the only 1 who didn’t…

  20. When Ghoulston was asked by jets confidential what his hobbies are, his reply working out. I think I beleive him. Goat Boy Brady look out.

  21. …mental note: Do not mess with dakar.

  22. In the long run, steroids and other bulk-building performance enhancers are bad for ligaments because your body and its tendons, joints, etc., are is only built to carry a certain muscle/weight load. So when your biceps and triceps and shoulders, etc. get absurdly massive, it overtaxes them, and causes a lot of problems in the long-run for long-term users.

The one point of disagreement I have with Ramble is the following:

You alluded to the fact that Gholston’s combine numbers help prove he isn’t on the juice. I totally disagree. If you use steroids the right way (and there are a bunch of different ways to train/cycle on steroids, you can train for either body-builder-type size with definition, balance, and pure mass and vascularity being your only goals, whereas if you trained for the combine and/or football, you’d be doing different types of workouts and it will maker you faster, bigger, stronger and even more agile if you stretch your now-absurdly-massive muscles appropriately. It is also said to potentially improve hand-eye coordination.

Aside from the long-term effects on the joints which makes injuries possible (though certainly not guaranteed), the only negative effects are the very real and very dangerous LONG TERM bodily damage you can do to yourself (your heart, liver, potential cancer, etc.)
