Minicamp Notes

by Mack Rosenberg on June 6th, 2008 at 12:14 pm

Great thanks to Cimini and Boland for their minicamp updates throughout the offseason, as their work observations from camp are greatly appreciated in the minicamp notes posts that I have done and will continue to keep doing. Minicamp session number one is over, so let’s take a look at what happened on the field!

  • Yesterday morning, Chad Pennington worked out with the second team, and Kellen Clemens worked with the first team. Clemens struggled, throwing an interception to Kerry Rhodes in a seven on seven drill, and another one to Rhodes in an eleven on eleven drill. Cimini notes that Clemens was holding on to the ball too much, being forced to scramble. This is certainly something that can’t continue if Clemens wants to be there on opening day.
  • Pennington with the second team was able to avoid any big mistakes, as he managed a near pick by Eric Barton. However, the highlight of Pennington’s practice was a 30 yard fade to rookie Marcus Henry. Henry ran the route while up against Dwight Lowery, and stole a nice pick away from him for the catch.
  • Looking more at who will play opposite Revis this year, the two guys who did so yesterday were Justin Miller and David Barrett.
  • Looking to the afternoon practice, we saw Chris Baker have a great time, making two spectacular diving catches, one on an out route from Pennington.
  • Clemens was with the second team in the afternoon, and he easily had a better time then he had in the morning, hitting Henry who made the catch over Lowery for a second time.
  • Moving to the running backs, how about Musa Smith and Jesse Chatman? Chatman showed excellent speed on screen catches, and the 232 pound Smith (just signed last week), caught one from Clemens and took it 60 yards to the house, untouched. Well, doesn’t that give you mixed signals about the defense. Granted, it is the second team defense.
  • Thomas Jones was a main target on some slants yesterday, and this shows me he can do much more then run with the football. I could easily see Mangini integrating him in the recieving game more.
Vernon Gholston reports today. Enjoy it!

Sounds like Marcus Henry is doing pretty good, might have been a great draft for us.

He keeps beating the other guy we drafted. They might just both suck.

    Thanks Mac

I remember Herm always saying “O!!! There’s 89 again fellas!” refereing to cotchery. Yet he never gave him a chance and IMO looked really stupid for starting McDropins over him. I hope this Henry kid pans out because we need depth and the best way to have that are rookies. I didnt like the Lowery pick that much but I would like to see him as a safety. I’m thinking if the Jets were going into a win now mode they would of traded for Lito. If we trade Baker next years draft will be like a mini 2000 Draft!

Should we be happy that Henry beat Lowery, or upset that Lowery gets beat by Henry? Maybe it was perfect coverage, and Henry made a circus catch. That’s the best of both worlds.

I think it’s too early to read into any of this. They don’t have pads on yet do they? Honestly I am not sure but I don’t think they do.

I’m more happy to see Baker participating and giving his all. I also liked what Tannenbaum said about his record dealing with agents and players, 84 of them being happy. Maybe Baker overplayed his hand, his agent screwed him, and now he will just shut up and play. Mangini has kept it cordial with him and I’m sure Mr. T doesn’t need to interact with CB much so that shouldn’t impact his play.

A defensive backs best friend is a good pass rush- remember this is practice- the QB and receiver have an advantage- hope Henry keeps catching everything. Hope Lowery keeps up our 4th round quality picks.

  8. I’m getting kind of nervous that in almost every report, both QBs aren’t looking so good. At least in ’06, Chad supposedly looked sharp and was the clear winner. If both aren’t looking good, it could be a long year. I know it’s early and there’s still plenty of time, but one of them better shape up and stand out soon.

It’s exciting to hear that Keller and Henry are having a good camp. That, along with the apparent progression made by Stuckey and Clowney, really injects a lot of hope into the passing game this year. It seems like the receiver group has gotten faster, taller, deeper and more diverse.

The play of Clemens with no pass rush does not inject much hope into the passing game at all.

From this report … Lowery isn’t getting the job done! It’s a learning process …. Lets hope !

  12. avatar EastSideKahaluu says:

Hey pat, after watching McCareins these past couple years, it doesn’t take a lot for me to become hopeful. If these receivers can make the catches that were dropped last year (e.g. Baltimore goal line) the team is already better.
It’s the minicamp/ota period anyway. lots of time for cynicism during the training camp days and, of course, the regular season.

McDropins and McCareless, same guy, right?

East, I would have been happy if he just droped it! Why not pop it up into the air and gift wrap it!
