Is Justin Miller going to be the opening day starter for the New York Jets at the second CB spot? It seems that Daily News beatwriter Rich Cimini thinks so:
From Ira: Do you think Justin Miller will be the starting cornerback opposite Darrelle Revis?
Ira: Yes, I do. Based on everything I saw at camp, the job is Miller’s to lose. When healthy, he brings so much more athleticism to the position than David Barrett and Hank Poteat. This is a contract year for Miller, so he should be highly motivated.
What a long strange trip it’s been for Miller. You can’t really blame him for the injury last season, that was out of his control, but if there’s anything positive from it, you’d just hope it’s given him the time to appreciate what an opportunity he has, and it sounds like he’s making the best of it. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Physically, he has the tools to be a starter in the league, but it’s what is between his ears that has been the major limiter of his career. The guy is in the last year of his contract, so hopefully he’s gotten his wake up call and realizes this is basically his big chance to make a huge payday. I hope he’s ready to play this year, because this team needs a consistent second corner and David Barrett isn’t one to oblige when the word consistent is involved.
… If only there was a phrase that I could use to incorporate Justin Miller’s last name and a popular product slogan … maybe even one of a beer company that would be deemed witty by the readers …

An unrelated rant: Burress is now complaining about his contract along with Shockey; yet, it’s the Jets that have all the problems with their players. Fact is that every NFL team every year has a “Pete Kendall” or “TO” situation of a player under contract that wants a new contract. Let’s see how the Giants deal with this, but no matter how it turns out for Big Blue, the press will criticize Gang Green more, although Baker isn’t near the player that Shockey or Burress is (for that matter, neither was Pete Kendall).
As for Miller, I can’t remember, but was Miller primarily an RCB or an LCB? Revis will be the starting LCB for the forseeable future, and RCB is usually the easier position, you just have to make real sure you’re not beaten deep (hence, David Barrett’s 10 yard cushion). If Miller failed at LCB playing against the other team’s no. 1 WR, then I could see Miller starting, but Miller’s problems, like Bassett said, have been mental and he can be beaten on the right-side as easily as on the left-side. Also, could this be why Ashlan Davis was signed? At 5-7, he sounds like solely a kick returner, but a good one.

With an improved pass rush I think Miller will excell.
-
What ever happened to Cody Spencer
-
Justin Miller is gonna start… I think he just needs a couple of snaps on first D Fence and he should B good…
-
I wonder if Miller will be as good as Coleman? They both used their speed to make up for poor CB skills though Coleman did get better and I hope miller does as well.
-
ok he better be a good corner cuz i think he lost his special teams job to leon so he defanantly has 2 work hard 2 be a better corner
-
I think you are referring to the famous tagline of an american beer company with an illustrious career:
“The King of Miller’s”
Right?
-
If Miller and Washington are back on returns who do you kick to?
Miller’s best? Miller Ice?
-
Hey Bassett:
How about then…..Its Just -
Sorry, my coputer is screwing up.
How about …..”Its Just-in Miller time”. Not bad eh?
-
with Miller on the field it’s just another guy who can take it to the house no matter where they are!
-
Sack,
I couldn’t agree more about the Jets/Giants disparity. Thats why I say that the Giants beating the Pats in the SB was the lesser of two evils.
-
Here are the difference in the Giants/Jets contract disputes–Soundbytes.
1) Baker is giving the media soundbytes. Shockey and Burress aren’t
2) The Giants won the SB last year–call this the “Free pass syndrome”
3) The Jets’ very public past disputes with Mawae and Kendall
4) It’s a juicy story because Baker’s potential replacements (Franks & Keller) make more money (on paper) than Baker does. This allows the press to stoke the fire and make the story more interesting.
-
I hope Miller is ready, because he wasn’t leaving a 10 yard cushion on every throw like Barret was, and his speed (if he still has it) will allow him to close distance faster. I would love to see a Miller/Washington KR option, but I’d use that formation sparingly, only when the teams they oppose are kicking away from whoever is back there.
-
Just Incredible … very similar to Fonzie / Naples … but its the “Smitty” for guys named Justin.
-
… I thought Sam Adams plays with the Broncos? Just kidding.
But seriously! Maybe, we can transplant Dwight Lowery’s hard working, film watching brain into Justin Miller’s NFL’s Fastest Man body?
Ahhhh. Cool and Refreshing.
-
Does the “what is between his ears” comment refer to his intellect or his dedication?
-
it refers to the brain Howard

Miller will be strictly the nickle back unless his man-to-man coverage skills have suddenly improved. I think he will win back his KOR role which earned him a Pro-Bowl, because Leon will be used more in the offense as the change of pace back. I love how we used Leon last year, but I wouldn’t want to overuse him again and risk injury.
-
Don’t count me amoung the Miller time fan club. Sure, he has great speed, but he hasn’t displayed any ball skills given his playing time. It seems as though most of the time he’s just running with the receiver hoping the ball doesn’t get thrown his way. He’s going to need help from a saftey if he’s covering a decent receiver.
-
I agree with 18andone- havent seen enough of miller to be sold on him to be our #2 CB. I hope he is good and improves to be a solid CB. As of now, of what i saw from Hank Poteat last season, think he should be the #2 CB. Really i guess i will be happy with anyone besides David Barrett. Our defense as a whole should be better, starting with our run defense thanks to Jenkins and pass rush with our LB – so that should help out the CB’s.
-
sjfalcon2001,
What very public dispute involving Mawae? I thought it was very simple, they released him and he went away. Did I miss something?
-
sjfalcon2001,
Bubba Franks does not make more the Baker, they make the same, $1.65million/ year. It seems that the Jets were careful not to give Franks more money, even though Franks has been the better player.
As for D. Keller, he is a first round pick, Baker was a third. You can’t compare salaries from 7 years ago til now. I am sure that Keller will probably make more money than most players on the team. Thats just the way it goes.
-
Justin Miller is our x-factor this year… He has all the skill and last year he showed the dedication b4 his injury… I think he puts it together and is one of the nfl’s biggest breakouts… especially in a contract year… he is a physical corner with speed to cover anyone and he has good instincts… remember that game against the colts where he had the phanton PI call that set them up… He showed a lot of fire that game… I expect big things!
This is a guy I was thrilled slipped to us that year in round 2… I hope it finally pays off on defense
-
ramble,
I don’t want you to misunderstand–I’m not defending Baker, just giving reasons why we hear more about him than Shockey.
I agree with you on the salary issue–that’s why I said “on paper.” The advance Baker got last year makes it *look* like he makes less than Franks & Keller.
And the dispute with Mawae wasn’t long and drawn out like Kendall, but he was a clubhouse lawyer and he did talk to the press a lot on his way out.

Lets pause a minute. Miller does have a legitimate chance to be a solid contributor. This can happen only if:
THE FRONT 8 GET’S SERIOUS PRESSURE
The new defense(new because of all the new players) might take a while to gel, but i believe that by week 8, the defense will become a serious force(in this mangini era, the defense has improved vastly both years during the 2nd half of the season). This now is a very fast & strong DEFENSE. Since Darrelle Revis can be put on an island and not need much assistance, Miller will be able to receive help from either Rhodes, Elam or Smith. The secondary has two marquee players in Rhodes & Revis, so this makes it easier to scheme against opposing offenses. With this, Lowery should be the dime this year, just to get a full season under his belt, because he seems to be the legitimate #2 corner for 09′.
JUST REMEMBER:
With a solid pass rush and run defense comes a better pass defense.Kris Jenkins: is working hard and is completely dedicated to his new situation, so i expect a solid season from him.
Shaun Ellis: has been consistent for many years, and with the solid talent around him, he should have his best season in the 3-4.
Kenyon Coleman: i believe will have a good year, but i get a feeling that C.J. Mosley will be the opening day starter. He looks to be a better fit.Calvin Pace: talented. Just needs to be consistent and make plays.
David Harris: Pro Bowl talent in 07′. His numbers were equal to & possibly better than DROY Patrick Willis(174 tackles, 4 sacks in 16 starts!)
Harris had 127 tackles. 102 of them while starting, 5 sacks and 2 forced fumbles in only 9 starts. Expect a pro bowl season from Harris.
Eric Barton: ok talent, replaceable.
Brian Thomas: Needs to have a big year or he will get the boot, if not in training camp.
Vernon Gholston: Only time will tell, but i see a machine in the making. With this, there is a chance that the Jets can have the best linebacker corps in the NFL. That is not a false statement. There is great talent, and it might take until 09′ to become solid, but this corps is extremely talented.
Justin Miller will have alot of help all around him. All he needs to do is work hard and not get caught out of position. Watch him start.
AND DONT FORGET JETS FANS. PRAY CONSTANTLY TO THE FOOTBALL GODS, BECAUSE THIS IS THE NEW YORK JETS WE ARE TALKING ABOUT. & NO TEAM SINCE 2000 HAS WON THE SUPERBOWL AFTER MAKING ANY SIGNIFICANT ADDITIONS IN THE PRIOR OFFSEASON. (biggest addition since 2000 by superbowl winner. Adam Vinatieri to the Colts in 06!!!!!) Please comment & thank you for your time.
-
Eric, CJ Mosley plays NT not End so Coleman will start. Lowery has never played so he doesnt seem to be anything… Yet. The football gods smite us because of Namath selling his soul to the devil. They just use us to tourcher seattle! As for additions… NE had a hell of an offseason and went 18 & ONE(BOOOOOONNNGGG!!!!)
Spa, That Indy game got him benched and yes it was a phantom call but he also got beat really bad by Wayne on their last drive. Cant really blame some one for getting picked on by Manning though his few but too many Unsportsmanlike penalties really added to his benching.

New England never won the Super Bowl!!! Thats the stat I clearly stated. 18-1 doesnt matter if there is no ring on your finger!
& C.J. Mosley did play end last year. he played on every position on the line last year & was successful. Did you actually watch the games last year. I think mosley will rotate all around if Coleman starts, because the backup NT is clearly Pouha. As for Lowery, there is speclation that he will be a future star. It was said on draft day as well as in many blogs. Since this is just speculation, everyone has their own belief & this is mine. Soo Reprocity, next time you try to tell me im wrong, bust out some stats and then ill agree.

Bud Light… Suck One.
-
this is the best news ive heard in a while. MIller might be the best athlete on the team. With a solid pass rush he should be just as solid of a corner. Hes got great speed. As long as theres no effect from his injury, I feel confident with him opposite “baby lockdown”
-
“Weekends were made for Justin Miller”?
-
Eric, dont get me wrong… I like mosley. It’s not uncommon to use DT at DE in a 3-4 when you are in a running situation. As for Lowery many blogs also say he’s better off playing safety which is like saying a WR who cant catch becomes a CB and a CB who is to slow becomes a Safety. Not the makings of a legitimate CB. I never said you were wrong. Of course I watched the games… I see that comment a lot and its retarded! This is a Jets Blog site of people who are addicted to football. Maybe you meant something else by that but I’m not going to read your mind. There are no NFL stats on Lowery! And Mosley had 15 tackles last year… WOW!
-
im glad to hear its miller who will have the 1st shot at starting opposite revis…i wanted miller before we even signed any1 in free agency…and now with pace jenkins and gholston i see no reason to why miller shouldn’t win the starting job or why he shouldn’t be successful…
i think alot of you guys are hard on him for whatever reasons…his 1st year he was a rookie playing for harm…his 2nd year new defensive system and he didn’t adjust to it as most our players didn’t…his 3rd year he was praised by mangini and looked to have a big year but got hurt…**** happens…i think he will shine and have a good year and help this team win some games…just my thoughts…

What i meant by Lowery is simple. He showed alot of promise in college, but his seinor year, i will not really knock him for because of the jaw injury. Mosley showed a presence to get to the ball. I just am not convinced that Kenyon Coleman can do the job. He is of adequate size, but he was just
average last year. What we can agree on is that the Jets have serious potential on both sides of the ball. I just want wins and solid play. I want to be impressed with the talent on the Jets. I believe Lowery has serious potential. I watched some film on him and he shows serious upside. Plus the 4th rd pick is usually a golden pick in N.Y.. & dont forget, Mangini likes changing things up and i find mosley to be a player whom mangini will utilize. He most likely will not be the opening day starter, but i see upside and solid play from him when he is in. Plus in limited time he also had 2.5 sacks and 2 forced fumbles last year.
I have doubt in coleman and i want to see things get shaken up this offseason -
Eric, I think another thing we will agree on is that Mangini unlike Herm actually gives players a chance. I also agree that mosley did show a nack for getting to the ball. I remember him having 2 sacks in one drive against the eagles last preseason which is what you want to see no matter what type of game it is. He’s not that far off physically from R.Seymour and I actually like him better than Pou-HA! but stoping the run is our priority. I’d like to see Mosley move to NG on passing downs. If Lowery turns into another golden 4th round pick I thik the league should line up and show some respect to the drafting God Father Jets!

Hey Basset:
I came up with this catchy slogan, ready? “Its time for Miller” !!!! Took me a long time to think it up.
