Buzz: Jets Interested in Kevin Jones?

The Associated Press is reporting that former Lions and Virginia Tech running back Kevin Jones will be hosting a workout for NFL teams in Saline Michigan on June 28th.

Among the many teams mentioned as interested, the Jets are noted as having “expressed an interest” in Jones.

I’m intrigued, and I know the Jets are always working to better the team, but I don’t think Jones is worth more then veteran minimum money, at least for year one coming off rehab.  With renowned Dr. James Andrews saying that it’s a ten month recovery at the least, there’s strong reason to believe what the good Dr. says. With Thomas Jones, Leon Washington and Jesse Chatman already in-house adding Kevin Jones seems a tad uneccessary.

Other teams mentioned: New England, Chicago, Green Bay, Tennessee, Tampa Bay, Denver, Kansas City, Philadelphia, Buffalo

  1. i dont think we need him and we r looking 4 a 3rd string not 2nd and we kinda have that locked by LW and i thin kw e have solid 3rd string also in musa smith and jesse chatmen so im pretty sure the jets dont even care

  2. The Jets seem “interested” in everyone. It’s hard to imagine they are interested in signing him though. It’s just that you never know. Someone (or two) might get injured in training camp, etc. Why not scout the guy when given the chance. That’s probably all that’s happening.

  3. Just plain and simple NOOOO!!! I am hearing that Chris Simms wants out of Tampa we should get him as insurance for Kellen Clemens.. Yes Kellen is gonna start but we have to make sure this season doesnt go down the drane..

  4. If we can sign him cheap, Kewpie to Green & White. No risk and reasonable upside.

  5. Harlan I’d agree with you in most cases, but after signing many players to monster contracts (Faneca, Woody, Rhodes, Pace, etc) I think we should save as much money as we can. We also must still sign Keller and Gholston. We also signed a handful of players to the minimum salary or just above it. Some of those guys are Chatman, Musa Smith, Tony Richardson, Hank Poteat, Bubba Franks, etc.

Let’s not ALSO forget that we have soo much depth at the rb position that it’s almost not far.

  6. Fred, if you think Kevin Jones is going to put a dent in our cap, you’re mistaken. The guy is coming off an injury – earlier than his doctor’s recommended. He has some talent and would be a solid insurance policy for the Jets should we get him. If not, no big deal, we still have TJ and LW grinding it out.

  7. Good Lord, sign the man! Matt Millen cut him- he must be good! In all seriousness, we have enough in the backfield as is with Smith, Chatham and Woodhead competing for the 3rd (maybe 2nd? meh, who knows) spot. Oh yeah, but I was totally serious about Millen being terrible in the area of talent evaluation.

  8. i think the jets are only “interested” in him is because to prevent him from going to the new england pansies

  9. Not bad to sign him because he would be a good 3rd string back because I think he has better physical talent then Musa or Chatman. Hey when you had the type of year we had you have to load up as much as possible and let the best men win to be able to put the best team possible for this year

  10. Sell crazy some place else — we’re all stocked up here!

  11. We should sign Chris Simms if he is at all healthy Can’t hurt to have more depth and competition at QB.

  12. I remember last year when we brought in everybody to play DE and we still kept guys like vito. IF we sign Jones then i’m sure it would just be an audition but it sounds like his injury will prevent that. There’s no cap hit if there is no bonous and you cut him so why not?
