First off, I want to make it clear that I am a HUGE Jets fan, I love this team and will support them whatever they do. But love, even unconditional love doesn’t mean that you don’t challenge the object of your affection when they’re wrong. I’m disappointed about the PSL thing because I know if you are a season ticketholder (I’m not), it’s more than likely that you are disappointed too. The reason that this blog is so popular, not because you agree with with everything I say, but because we all dialog about issues around this team and because I am focusing the thoughts and voices of many of you.
A reader sent me an email this morning urging me to keep the PSL issue “on the front page” and to that end, I am obliging. The emailer suggests an easy point of action to fans, and in my mind, most importantly, current season ticketholders.
Contact the team.
You can do so, either by their website, or the Ticket Office by phone at (LINK & NUMBER CORRECTED!!) 512-560-8200.
Trust me, if you think a single voice doesn’t matter, then nothing will change their course of action in charging you thousands of dollars a ticket. But it takes YOU the reader to voicing your complaint directly to the team for them to listen. Likely PSLs will become a reality, but at least you can at least make the team sweat their decisions and potential marginalizing of die-hard fans. Share this post with other fans
Not sure what to say? Here’s some talking points to help … add your own talking points or experiences in contacting the team in the comments below:
- Season Ticketholder: I’m very upset that the team is even considering PSLs. I understand that the team is looking to increase revenue streams, but no one forced the team to build a brand new and comparatively expensive stadium. Why is the team forcing loyal fans for many years to pay a user fee for something I’ve enjoyed for many years already to attend a game in a shiny new building next to the one the team currently occupies?
- Infrequent Attender: I know the new stadium will drive new revenues, and I love attending games, but the team’s insistence on PSLs is going to price me out of the few games that I can currently afford. Between parking costs, raising concession prices, and of course raised ticket prices it’s becoming increasing hard to enjoy cheering on my favorite team the few times a year I can afford to do so … to mention nothing of the secondary ticketing market …

we need to fight back as fans. not just against the teams but the ridiculous whining players as well. how? don’t pay the PSL. that’s the way to make your voice heard. sure, people will argue that it won’t make a difference if they don’t buy the PSL, but that’s the trap and that’s what these teams are banking on. i’ve been going to games for 30 years and have made the commitment to myself that i won’t pay a PSL — not bc i’m cheap but bc it’s financing all the absurdity that is going on in sports.

Forget whining about the PSL’s…..start saving your money or open up a few credit card accounts or get a bank loan. If they start the PSL’s, Jets and Giants fans will be affected. I’ve had season tickets for ten years and I will figure out a way to have them for another fifty years. Figure out how to sell a few games at a high premium…whatever you have to do. If they decide to do this, nothing will stop them. If you don’t pay, there’s a waiting list 30,000 people long. It is what it is. There’s nothing the little guy can do about it but ante up for the future.

Marty,
I hear you, I feel resigned to this fate, and I’m well aware of the hoards waiting to take my place in the stands, but that doesn’t mean people shouldn’t bother to voice their outrage. Say your peace to the team via phone or website or email or snail mail or whatever. THEN go and take out whatever loans you want and pay for your damn PSL. Just because its inevitable doesn’t mean you have to sit there and take it with your mouth shut, and sometimes they do hear you. When they first started charging to be on the waitlist ($50/year) there was a huge outcry, then they changed their tune and said the money would count towards your season tickets when you buy them.

I bet Ramble914 wants the PSL’s because he is very much a supporter of the FO. And he believes that anyone disagreeing with a team decision is not being a true fan. So I bet that idiot Ramble914 loves the idea of gouging the fans.

Here’s the message I sent them:
I am very concerned about the possibility of PSLs for the new stadium. If you implement them you will effectively be swapping a significant number of blue-collar die-hard fans for a bunch of corporations and rich yuppies who could care less about the team and only view the tickets as a financial or business asset. We all know how important the crowd can be at home games. If you change the make-up of the crowd so significantly, you will in effect negate the home-field advantage. And if we can’t win at home no one will want to come to the games. Building a new stadium that can hold more people won’t benefit you if no one wants to come to the games to see their team lose. Please find some other way to finance the stadium…after all, you wanted a new stadium to make more money – use the additional money you expect from the new stadium to pay it off.
If we let them know that the PSLs might affect their wallets, they might look for other ways to finance the stadium.
