Hey Kids, It’s Time for The Mr. Bill Show!
Nice in-depth profile this morning of new Jets offensive line coach Bill Callahan, courtesy of Cimini in the Daily News.
From the article:
During the Jets’ spring camps, Callahan distributed an in-depth critique each morning to every lineman, breaking down every play from the previous day’s practice. The players were taken aback by his fastidious approach.
“That might seem like a small thing, but to me, it says a lot about him as a coach – very detailed,” said guard Brandon Moore, who described Callahan’s daily tome as “an essay that reads like he’s talking to you.”
Breaking down each individual practice play every single day, then writing reports on it? Definitely sounds like a Mangini type of guy! Wonder if he’s started with the pop quizzes, yet?
After the line’s struggles last season, it’s encouraging to see that the team not only has upgraded the personnel, but also have attempted to upgrade the coaching, as I’m under the impression former coach Tony Wise was more a physical taskmaster than an Xs and Os schemer. I think no one will argue that one of the keys to the upcoming season — possibly the most important — is vast improvement in the offensive line. After ranking 23rd in rushing while giving up 53 sacks — more than three a game — in addition to tons of pressures and hurries, there is a lot of work to be done.
Let’s just hope that our old friend Mr. Sluggo in New England doesn’t ruin the day, or that our line looks like it’s made of clay!
(For you kids who have no idea what I’m talking about: Try this)

Oh noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

did anyone see newsdays top 25 players in ny? Can we get any respect over here, as kerry rhodes cant even crack the list? give me a f****ng break

Let’s hope he can turn around one of the worst OL in the league. I’m a little disappointed by the Shane Olivis news, I thought he would be at least a quality backup.

I expect to see the Jets in the single digits in offense rankings this year. Don’t yet have a feel for the D. Has to be better than last year, if just for being on the field for less time with a run-first offense that will eat clock!

Not sure where better to put this but check this site out: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/nyj/

Pro Football Reference has been one of my top bookmarks for a while now and pretty much where I go first when looking for information about particular players and teams. For historical stuff, it can’t be beat — especially when you’re looking for things like the team record each year, complete draft classes, coaching records, etc.
Great site!

I love hearing that Callahan is a fanatic. After hearing that he is breaking down each practice play I thought, if I were a player, I would be making sure that I did my job on each play. Accountability! I hope that Callahan can work some magic with Bender & Garner. They both have the size and the attitude. Hopefully, he can teach them the moves. Things are looking up.

billvv, i’m actually more confident about the D than i am about the O. with our optimism combined, we might have a pretty good team!
-
ESK, I can’t find any stats to back up the D optimism as I can for the O. What gives you the up side?

Harvlis,
That’s a great point about accountability. For some reason, “Big Brother” always has a way of keeping you focused and in line.
It’s my understanding that slight, seemingly insignificant movements can be the difference between stellar pass protection and a sack. I love hearing that our new OL coach is as detail oriented as the HC.

billvv, i guess it’s not stats so much as it is other trends. for example, LB’s in the past five seasons have had a good trend of sustaining production from year one to year two. DeMeco Ryans, Shawne Merriman and DeMarcus Ware are all players who burst onto the scene as rookies and have seen success since then. i think this is a definite indication that David Harris (remember he only started half of last season) will once again be a force. another thing i like is that Harris at 243lbs is now officially the smallest member of the front seven- not too shabby! size alone can sometimes create good match ups. also, i’m almost positive that Darrelle Revis will have another solid year- i think that what gets lost in his noted speed and cover skills is his ability to make solid, open field tackles. the two things that i can understand might undermine these positives is a) the questions at CB2 and b) the ability of coach Sutton.
as soon as i see Clemens make all the throws and correct his mental errors (tendency to hold onto the ball, reading coverage and picking up the blitz), i will be all for your top 10 offense prediction.

When they hired Callahan I felt it was a great pickup, and showed the team was committed to fixing the OL problems. Also, if Schottenheimer leaves, he will step right in as OC.
