Trade Idea II – Shockey for Baker
From Pelzman’s latest column:
What would happen if the Jets and Giants swapped unhappy tight ends?
…
the Jets would have to throw in something else. Well, they do have an extra fourth-rounder in next year’s draft, from trading disgruntled Pete Kendall to Washington. See, it all ties together.
Pelzman makes an interesting case, but there are a few flaws:
1. Sure we get rid of a disgruntled player, but since when has Shockey been Mr. Gruntled?
2. How good would it be for the development of a young QB like Clemens to be yelled at by a heavily covered Shockey for not throwing his way while he was “open”?
3. If Shockey is a Jet, the whole jockey celebration / missed field goal incident becomes a lot less fun to mock.
However, we’ve discussed this before and there were many who would jump at a deal for Shockey, who is clearly the superior player of the two. Something more to chew on.
I hate trade ideas…

worst idea…like EVER!
Shokey is a major headcase… and never healthy.
Pelzman notes that he is a better pas catcher, but wasn’t that what we drafted Keller to be?
I would rather have Baker, not because he is a better player than Shockey, but — notwithstanding his present stand-off with management — he is a very good player with very few weaknesses who is also a hard worker and good teammate who otherwise keeps his mouth shut and does what the coaches ask him to do.
All I can think of when I hear “Shockey” is throwing his arms up in disgust when he doesn’t get the ball, then dropping passes that hit him in the chest, or dropping passes in key spots, like against San Fran Cisco.
It’d be great to have him from a pure talent perspective, but I’d rather have a Chris Baker than a pure headcase like Shockey.
I think Pelzman now has an edifying piece to demonstrate what he does for a living (and by implication does not do):
• This is not an informative piece about the team he covers. No real new news of note.
• This is not investigative journalism. He fabricates an idea rather than find out what either team is planning or considering doing.
• It is a stupid piece. There is no way the Jints would trade a former #1 pick for a POS like Baker, a former third rounder who had one average season. Perhaps a #1 or #2 draft pick. But when Shockey has played he had flashed dominance.
• It is not funny and it gives attention to two individuals who place themselves above their teammates and daily are lowering their earning potential and value.
Pelzman should be embarrassed; but if he was capable of responding like that to such an effort, he would not have written it.

I think “trading headaches” pretty much tells you all you need to know to nix the idea.
Shockey would terrorize the Jets, is overrated and we just drafted Keller. Shockey may have the tools but he is also a ten yr old girl (no offense to any ten year old girls). The Giants won when they didn’t have a donkey (the other term) like Shockey criticizing everyone. The Giants should have taken a second rounder for him, because you don’t get a better chance to ditch a fan favorite than immediatly after winning a superbowl without him.
Bad idea…Shockey is a major A$$hole, and would wreck team chemistry. He is as selfish and self centered as they come.
… and we just drafted a TE in the first round.
Only trade of note I’d like us to explore is for a CB, perhaps Lito.
Maybe before drafting Keller I would’ve given this trade a thought; know it makes no sense. Shockey was a much better pass-catcher and redzone threat than Baker, who is a better blocker. But, now that the Jets have Bubba for the redzone, Keller for between the 20s and Pociask for blocking, Baker is redundant and Shockey would be equally redundant. Keller was drafted in the first round to play and is the future at TE. Shockey (and Baker) would just stunt his growth. In defense of Pelzman, I got the sense that his proposal was tongue-in-cheek.
hes gonna be a headache and we already got a future tightend dustin keller so we r good and i thin kthe giants would want a little more than a 4th rounder and baer 4 shockey they might want a 3rd rounder or mayb a 2nd who knows and trust me he will be a huge headache i watch 13 games of the giants last yr and he looks like a huge pain on the field no wonder eli nvr gets his conficence up its cuz of him yellling at him all the time
Dopey article from a bad reporter trying to stir the pot.
FYI for everyone, KELLER is not a TE!
J is Dallas Clark a TE? Keller will be a TE. Just not by typical definition.
He was a college TE, no question about that. His use will be as a TE, either split out or in the slot, or as an H-back. AND, the Jets list him as a TE.
Trade ideas are amusing. Shockey for Baker though? Eli has found favor in Bass, and has other targets to keep happy.
I’ve heard Shockey’s name related to the Saints, with a possible 2nd round pick involved. If I am the Giants I take the higher pick.
Frankly, I don’t want either Baker or Shockey on the JETS. But if the JETS could do it even up, I would make the trade in a heart beat.
I’ll pass on this because Shockey is an ass and we drafted Keller. Look if Baker doesn’t want to be a Jet then good, I hope we trade him to Chicago. We are going to run ball and score 6pts a game and win on defense ???
I’m by no means a Shockey fan, but I think he’d give us some much needed attitude on offense. It’s usually a plus to have a guy who’s willing to get in his tackler’s face and let him know just what he thinks of him. Might not be worth it though, because he’s about as much of a locker room cancer as there is these days.
Keller is a TE and was drafted to play TE with the Jets. Last season, Baker got 3/4 of his receptions in WR formations AND the OL sucked, so he had to stay in and block more than usual. Schott’s system, like with the Chargers, is to use the TE as a pass catcher…that’s why Baker’s best 2 seasons (most receptions and yardage) have been the last 2 under Schott. Now, Schott has a real weapon with Keller and, with Bubba, Schott has basically re-created Gates–between the 20s, Keller will be used and in the red zone you have 6-6 Bubba. Remember, in SD, Gates is always a pass catcher and Manumaleuna comes in to block, especially in the redzone when SD goes double tight. Has anyone seen Gates block? It’s not pretty.
i will take shockey anyday he lights a fire under his team mates ask micheal strahan he will tell you.
Hoz, man, Strahan jsut told the Giants to get Shockey the HELL OUT OF THERE. Also, he is definitely not what the Jets management is looking for. He’s a complete a-hole.
SackDance, Keller is not going to be a traditional TE in the NFL. If they use him as such, they will stop doing so shortly after he is consistently overpowered by bigger, stronger defensive front-7 guys.
He will certainly line up there a fair amount; but he was drafted almost entirely for his pass-catching skills. He doesn’t have Gates’ size either, so thats another strike against the comparison between the two somewhat similar, but in key ways different, players.
Shockey is one of the most overrated players in the NFL, whines constantly and drops way too many balls. Some of my friends, unfortunately, are Giant fans and they can’t wait to see Shockey leave. It was no coincidence that the Giants offense and Eli was better with Kevin Boss last year, than with Shockey in the lineup. The Jets will be better off without Baker and Shockey. This was one of the worst articles I’ve seen in a long time.
DSmizzle, my point is that the Jets only employed Baker as a traditional TE because of the poor OL and, even with the poor OL, he still got 3/4 of his receptions in WR formations. The Schott/Chargers offense treats a TE like a WR. So, Keller won’t be blocking anyone on the front 7 and, while Gates is taller than Keller, have you seen Gates block? Remember he was a basketball player, not a football player. Trust me, it won’t be hard for Keller to match Gates’ blocking prowess.
Regardless SackDance, haven’t we seen the err of the “copycat” theory, when last offseason Mannenbaum thought they could win Super Bowls with mediocre talent a la the Patriots Suepr Bowls?
Keller seems to have the skills to be a VERY useful receiver and cause nightmares for defenses.
Yes, Schott’s system might make the TE position (when there is a Gates, Keller or even Baker) more of a pass-catching weapon, but nonetheless, if you watch Chargers games, there is a very real role for traditional TE’s. In fact, on many of their plays, Gates is split out and there are 1 or 2 trad’l TE’s playing in the trad’l TE spot.
I really liked the Franks pickup because I thought “with Baker having pretty good skills in nearly every area, this is a supplemental weapon that our QB’s could use.” Now that Frankxxxx might be our top option at trad’l TE, I’m very worried because he is injury-prone, slowed by age, etc.
My whole problem with the “caving” thing is that Tangini seems to have the propoganda skills of Scott McLelland (i.e., they fumble around and can’t “spin” things very well). They could have, when Baker first approached them or at the beginning of this “saga”, spun it around and given him a SMALL raise and said “Chris Baker is a good player and an asset to the team, and similarly to how we like to ‘take care’ of our guys like Kerry Rhodes and Coles, because we treat our players well”.
Problem solved, and then it wouldn’t have been a huge distraction and wouldn’t cause other players to think they can run the GM over (an argument which I’ve always found dubious at best, because it’ll happen no matter what they do).
Shockey for Baker? Yes.
Shockey for Baker and a 4th rounder? Hell no.
Anything more than a 6th rounder is too much for Shockey’s cancerous theatrics. And that means it’s not happening, so no thanks.
Attn. people
Keller is not a TE.
The drafting of Keller has no affect on the trade of Shocky for Baker. The trade depends on how bad the blood between Baker and the Jets actually is. Shocking would give the Jets a much needed threat as a receiver. But a Baker, that doesn’t have to be a 6th o-lineman, would also be a much needed receiving threat.
Shocky is a competetor – also something the Jets need. But I just don’t see the Hitler type tendencies of Mangini dealing with Shocky.
