Attn. people

Keller is not a TE.

The drafting of Keller has no affect on the trade of Shocky for Baker. The trade depends on how bad the blood between Baker and the Jets actually is. Shocking would give the Jets a much needed threat as a receiver. But a Baker, that doesn't have to be a 6th o-lineman, would also be a much needed receiving threat.

Shocky is a competetor - also something the Jets need. But I just don't see the Hitler type tendencies of Mangini dealing with Shocky.

Shockey for Baker? Yes.

Shockey for Baker and a 4th rounder? Hell no.

Anything more than a 6th rounder is too much for Shockey's cancerous theatrics. And that means it's not happening, so no thanks.

Regardless SackDance, haven't we seen the err of the "copycat" theory, when last offseason Mannenbaum thought they could win Super Bowls with mediocre talent a la the Patriots Suepr Bowls?

Keller seems to have the skills to be a VERY useful receiver and cause nightmares for defenses.

Yes, Schott's system might make the TE position (when there is a Gates, Keller or even Baker) more of a pass-catching weapon, but nonetheless, if you watch Chargers games, there is a very real role for traditional TE's. In fact, on many of their plays, Gates is split out and there are 1 or 2 trad'l TE's playing in the trad'l TE spot.

I really liked the Franks pickup because I thought "with Baker having pretty good skills in nearly every area, this is a supplemental weapon that our QB's could use." Now that Frankxxxx might be our top option at trad'l TE, I'm very worried because he is injury-prone, slowed by age, etc.

My whole problem with the "caving" thing is that Tangini seems to have the propoganda skills of Scott McLelland (i.e., they fumble around and can't "spin" things very well). They could have, when Baker first approached them or at the beginning of this "saga", spun it around and given him a SMALL raise and said "Chris Baker is a good player and an asset to the team, and similarly to how we like to 'take care' of our guys like Kerry Rhodes and Coles, because we treat our players well".

Problem solved, and then it wouldn't have been a huge distraction and wouldn't cause other players to think they can run the GM over (an argument which I've always found dubious at best, because it'll happen no matter what they do).

DSmizzle, my point is that the Jets only employed Baker as a traditional TE because of the poor OL and, even with the poor OL, he still got 3/4 of his receptions in WR formations. The Schott/Chargers offense treats a TE like a WR. So, Keller won't be blocking anyone on the front 7 and, while Gates is taller than Keller, have you seen Gates block? Remember he was a basketball player, not a football player. Trust me, it won't be hard for Keller to match Gates' blocking prowess.

Shockey is one of the most overrated players in the NFL, whines constantly and drops way too many balls. Some of my friends, unfortunately, are Giant fans and they can't wait to see Shockey leave. It was no coincidence that the Giants offense and Eli was better with Kevin Boss last year, than with Shockey in the lineup. The Jets will be better off without Baker and Shockey. This was one of the worst articles I've seen in a long time.

SackDance, Keller is not going to be a traditional TE in the NFL. If they use him as such, they will stop doing so shortly after he is consistently overpowered by bigger, stronger defensive front-7 guys.

He will certainly line up there a fair amount; but he was drafted almost entirely for his pass-catching skills. He doesn't have Gates' size either, so thats another strike against the comparison between the two somewhat similar, but in key ways different, players.

Hoz, man, Strahan jsut told the Giants to get Shockey the HELL OUT OF THERE. Also, he is definitely not what the Jets management is looking for. He's a complete a-hole.

Keller is a TE and was drafted to play TE with the Jets. Last season, Baker got 3/4 of his receptions in WR formations AND the OL sucked, so he had to stay in and block more than usual. Schott's system, like with the Chargers, is to use the TE as a pass catcher...that's why Baker's best 2 seasons (most receptions and yardage) have been the last 2 under Schott. Now, Schott has a real weapon with Keller and, with Bubba, Schott has basically re-created Gates--between the 20s, Keller will be used and in the red zone you have 6-6 Bubba. Remember, in SD, Gates is always a pass catcher and Manumaleuna comes in to block, especially in the redzone when SD goes double tight. Has anyone seen Gates block? It's not pretty.

I'm by no means a Shockey fan, but I think he'd give us some much needed attitude on offense. It's usually a plus to have a guy who's willing to get in his tackler's face and let him know just what he thinks of him. Might not be worth it though, because he's about as much of a locker room cancer as there is these days.
