Schein takes a look at who might be publicly perceived as “on the hot seat” this year and discusses Eric Mangini’s status with his management.

In 2006, he was “Man-genius,” expertly guiding the Jets on a stunning and unpredictable march to the playoffs in his first year in New York. In 2007, well, let’s just say he wasn’t “Man-genius” as the Jets slumped to an underachieving four-win season.

But Mangini is a good, solid football coach who has the respect of owner Woody Johnson and general manager Mike Tannenbaum. Now, the stakes are most certainly raised in New York with Tannenbaum spending Mr. Johnson’s money wisely and actively this offseason. However, unless there is a complete player revolt, Mangini won’t lose his job after three seasons, even if the Jets finish behind the Patriots and the Bills in the AFC East.

He’s right.  Mangini kept the team believing in him and each other last year, the team should be improved in terms of record, but I’m not holding my breath to see them jump past the Patriots yet.  All the same, we should start to see the marks of greatness in this team now, it’s been three offseasons and it’s Tangini’s team … it’s time to put the coaching and the talent together.

    Bassett,

I too look at this team and see greatness in the making. I’m actually amazed at the talent we have assembled in the last three years. The accumulation of quality draft picks and free agents makes me believe we can go 11-5 this season, and probably climb to just under where the patriots are.

Although we only won four games last season, we lost 7 games by 7 points or less, and really should have been 7-9 or 8-8, if not for a few dropped TD passes and overtime losses.

I am hoping and praying that Kellen Clemens is the real deal, and can give us soild QB play. It would be great to draft a QB, groom him and have him be a solid player. It hasn’t happened for the Jets sinse Chad P. and before him it was Ken O’Brien, so it hasn’t happened too often for the Jets.

The thing about last year is that despite going 4-12, the team never quit on Mangini, even playing hard in the last game and in overtime. I think it will be a turn around season for the Jets this year.

First, Mangini never claimed to be a genius, so the 10 – 6 and the 4 – 12 were just the way things worked out and not his doing in either case. He always reminded his players and fans in general that you’re not as good or as bad as you look. They quietly go about assembling a better and better team, taking their lumps, without saying much one way or the other, preferring the players to demonstrate a winning attitude and winning ways as a more permenant way of speaking. No bravado, no whining, just do your job.

Who said it would be 3 years and the team should show greatness, in what book can I read it? Nonsense! This team has so many questions, to demand greatness makes no sense (after 3 years) . We have an OL, which even today with the addition of Fanica and Woody have not had enough time to gel and who knows if T.J. will be the RB they hope him to be. Do we expect players that we drafted for or traded for to come in and create miracles for the team? Here is what you should expect, expect this team to be better than last years team, player wise they have upgraded, expect this team to win some of the games they lost last year. I expect them to slip into the playoffs, but greatness, no, not now, and not in the near future either. They have need for a CB, which they have to address in next years draft, a big target WR, and they need a break out RB. Mangini is a good coach, but Joe Gibbs is a great coach, and after years with Washington he was just average, why? players, he didn’t have the complement of players needed, time is an enemy, but patience perserveres.

  4. patience.. my a$$! I’m gonna kill somebody! It’s been 39 years since our last SB visit. Enough with the patience talk, already…you sound like a Cubs fan!

Everyone knows that the key to success in the NFL is a consistent and very good if not great QB. Testament to this just look at Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Matt Hassellbeck, Carson Palmer as a testament to this. Chances of winning the SB with an average QB is slim at best. You have to pull a 00 Ravens or 08 Giants to win one with a craptacular QB.

Also dont dig a trench for Mangini just yet. He is a great coach and he has showed that the players respect him and his regime. Remember it took bill Cowher like 15yrs to win a SB and Jeff Fisher is still the HC at Tennessee. Its hard to come by good coaches in the NFL. Heck just look at Oakland.

Mangini is not a great coach, but I know if we start off bad this season Ramble 914 will be there to take up for him. The comment by bubby about being like cub fans does speak volumes about how some of us root for the Jets. The Cubs got a new manager and they are doing great , maybe we should do the same. But alas no by the time we see we are going the wrong direction it will be the start of another rebuilding process. If you like mediocrity keep drinking the koolaid….IT”S GREEEEEAAAATTTTTT!
Go Jets, oh and Ramble you are still an idiot.

  8. avatar Reprocity says:

Mangini is a young coach. In 2 drafts… Mangold, Harris, Revis, Leon, the jury is still out on Brick, and throw in Brad Smith as a good utility player. If either Gholston or Keller turn out and add them to that list, who in the NFL has had a better draft the past 3 years? That is how you make a great team.

I dont know why people are not impressed with TJ? I know 1000 yard seasons are common know but doing it in a RB by committie and behind a terrible OL and defences knowing you’re going to run and still end up with +1100 yards and he started all 16 games and didnt slack off. He’s not Martin but I’m happy with TJ as his replacement. Any Takers?

  10. avatar Bent says:

It wasn’t really a RBBC. He had about 70% of all the carries and only 3.6 yards per carry. And he had only one TD, don’t forget, despite several goalline chances.

I do expect him to be much better though with the improved line and I agree, he deserves some credit for reaching 1,000 with that awful line, even though that’s only 60 yards per game.

  11. avatar Bob Vopat -Jet fan since 1965 says:

We Jet fans are tired of the same-o same-o. You must give Mangini time and not yank the plug so quick. That’s been our problems over all these years and we must find a winning & capable QB which is why we must go with Clemmens. Chad is better at this point but we must think long term,We must find out if Ainge has good potential so that means we must dump Chad even though I feel he is better at this time than the 2 others. Any good QB must suffer growing pains so we can’t be too quick to pull the plug. Only problem is I’m 80 yrs old and I don’t know how many years of patience I have left

  12. avatar Reprocity says:

Bent, To split hairs it was closer to 70 ypg with 1100+ yds. Just on perception what do you think a premeir RB ie. LT,LJ, Adrian Peterson, would have gotten behind that line last year? I do admitt his redzone production wasnt what I thought it would be even with the Line playing the way it did. With an actual FB I think he would have done better. Where’s Brad Baxter when you need him?

  13. avatar Reprocity says:

Wow Bob that’s a long time. Who’s you’re favorite all time jet QB? I never saw Namath play so I’m a Vinny fan.

  14. avatar Bent says:

I can practically guarantee that AP would have got injured behind last year’s line.

Purple Jehuu Caulcrick is the new Brad Baxter. 21 TDs last season.
