Boulay Talks About Becoming a CB

Former Montreal Alouette and current Jet Etienne Boulay was home in Montreal to watch a game of his former team and talked about re-learning a position he hasn’t played in many years, cornerback. Boulay (5?9? 187 pounds) played collegiately at New Hampshire with Jets’ WR David Ball.

Boulay has made it through mini-camp with the NFL’s New York Jets. As he prepares for the main portion of camp, which commences July 16 for him, he can only look forward in his quest to impress the coaching staff. Boulay has been practising at cornerback, a position he hasn’t played since college as a senior.

“There’s a lot of learning involved,” he said. “But at least I’m showing I can be versatile.

“Things are going well and it has been a great experience so far. I’m working hard, to show the coaches I can contribute. I’m confident in my abilities, but the decision is in their hands.”

Versatile, yes, a 5-9 NFL Safety… no. I think Boulay has a shot to make this team, but it’s a shot that depends on how much he can progress and whether or not he can make a veteran like David Barrett (who seems to have lost his starting job to Justin Miller) expendable.

  1. Height is not tha important at safety, re Bob Sanders 5′8″

  2. Sanders is somewhat exceptional though. Ideally, you’d like your safeties to be bigger. Kerry is 6-3.

At his size, EB will be competing for the nickelback role, I would imagine. If he can contribute on special teams then he might have an outside shot at the roster.

  3. J, Victor green 5′10″. Even at corner, Glenn was around 5′9″, Revis is 5′11″. What about Lowery and Poteat? I think this will come down to economics more than anything because of this glut. I would trade Barrett for 10 footballs.

  4. sanders who weighs more than 200 pounds also plays more in run support than he does against the pass. antoine bethea defends against the pass more often. boulay at under 200 pounds wouldn’t be good enough in run support because of his weight, and is a liability going over the top (think of most of rhodes’ interceptions … predominantly high leaping plays coming forward) as a safety … he would have to be better in close coverage to make this team
