Favre to the Jets?

Mike Lombardi, former NFL Exec (and frequent guest on SNY, who by the way has an awesome blog of his own) spoke on Sirius’ NFL Radio recently and stated that “the Jets would be a good spot, they don’t have a quarterback” in relation to trying to acquire Brett Favre to play this fall.

No to split hairs, but they do have a quarterback, they just don’t know who it is yet, or how effective that quarterback will be this season.  One would have to assume though that a better line and running game will improve whoever lines up behind Mangold, be it Favre or whoever takes snaps.  I think though what Lombardi meant though is evident, they don’t have a franchise solidifying QB.  But is Favre that person at this point in his career?  Apparently all these shenanigans aren’t doing the Packers any favors, writes Peter King …

Favre is a great QB in some respects, but in my humble opinion, he can be a liability to teams (**cough cough** Giants playoff game **cough cough**) and to give up whatever it would take to get him (likely a high draft pick) I’m just not sure it’s the right step right now for a guy who might play just a few more years.  If the Jets do try to acquire Favre, maybe there is something to the “win now” talk of the beat writers, but until I see them making moves for Favre, I just don’t think this would be a good move for the team.

  1. oh please stop…
Favre is not going to the jets, its just a slow news week in football.

  2. Favre needs to go to a team who is just a QB away from the playoffs. We don’t know what kind of a team we will have. Chad took Favre’s team apart, when the Jets were a better team than the Packers.

If we have an O-LIne, a running game, and an offensive game plan — Chand and Kellen will be fine.

  3. We are talking about first-ballot Hall of Famer Brett Favre; probably a top-5 all-time QB. Sixteen Packer seasons, 11 playoff appearances, 1 under .500 season, 9 Pro Bowls and we all know his records, most yardage, TDs, passes, completions, all at a career 61.4% completion percentage. And, he just finished a 4,000 yard, 28 TD, 66.5% completion pct. (a career high) season, so there’s gas left in the tank. He is too much of a gun-slinger now (he also has the most career INTs) and is not worth the first-round draft pick that it would take to get him, but would you rather have KC learn from Chad (who doesn’t have KC’s skill set) or Favre (we hope KC has close to Brett’s skill set, but we at least know that KC and Brett share howitzers and mobility). This is a pipe dream and never going to happen, but let’s not kid ourselves, Brett Favre is a major, huge, gigantic (pick your adjective) upgrade over Chad or KC, my only concern is that the Jets don’t have a legitimate deep threat that would fully utilize Brett’s talents. But, you can forget seeing 8-men in the box, that’s suicide against Favre, who IMO has the strongest arm in NFL history (beating out Bert Jones by a hair) and is the second-most physically gifted QB that I have seen (Elway wins that title). I, for one, would be psyched to see no. 4 throwing a 30-yard seam pass on a frozen rope to Keller on the dead run. Favre would instantly make the Jets a serious threat in the AFC, as he has done his entire career for the Packers, often when the Pack had sub-par talent, too. I’d gladly give up a 2nd rounder for Favre, even at 38 years old…he could be the Nolan Ryan of the NFL, because he’s lost nothing on his fastball.

  4. granted, he is an upgrade, of that there is no doubt …

but my thought is the whole “if I could just show up on Sunday” talk doesn’t really truck with Mangini’s philosophy.

  5. We will accomodate all of Brett Favre’s needs… No worries.

  6. [...] Mike Lombardi, former NFL Exec spoke on Sirius’ NFL Radio recently and stated that “the Jets would be a good spot, they don’t have a quarterback” in relation to trying to acquire Brett Favre to play this fall.http://www.thejetsblog.com/?p=4526 [...]

  7. If we had a chance for Favre, it’s a no brainer. We can trade Chad for a second day pick, and Kellen can sit another year or two. I agree that the Jets become instantly relative in the AFC with #4 at QB.

  8. do not want him or need him. Chad is easily capable of throwing as many INTs as Favre will

  9. Point well taken, Bassett, but if I were the Jets’ FO, I would only do the deal if Brett gave a 2-year commitment (maybe with a 3rd year option) and was up for Camp Mangini. But, if Eric learned anything from Parcells and Belichick it should be that the LT’s, Brady’s and Favre’s of the NFL get a little more slack the others; they’ve earned it with their all-out, injuries-be-damned approach to the game (although Brady never has played with the injuries that Brett or LT played with). Favre’s a special player and if he wanted to end his career playing for the Jets, I would make it happen.

  10. TOON2388,

But he wont throw nearly as many touchdowns…

  11. and at least we are guaranteed he will play a full season… Unlike Chad who is the biggest liablitly in the history of football.

  12. Unfortunately it is 15 years to late

  13. J,

You said it all. And, why would he want to come here? He needs a serious contender that needs a QB.

  14. Farve in NYC? He plays in Greenbay and lives in Old Miss. I know it would be a trade but… Not going to happen.

  15. Toon2388, sure, too bad that neither Chad nor KC can get to Favre’s 28 TD pass per season average. Also, as a starter, Favre has never thrown for less than 3,000 yards in a season (Chad has only thrown for over 3,000 yards twice), he’s only been under 3,400 yards 3 times (Chad’s never been over 3,400 yards), and he’s never been out of the top 10 in the NFL for TDs in in any of his 16 seasons (Chad was there once, in ‘02). And, despite Favre’s rap as throwing too many INTs, he’s only thrown more INTs than TDs in a season 3 times. But, Favre has never thrown fewer than 471 passes in a seaon, Chad has only thrown more than that once, in ‘06. So, I’d take a 3,800 yard, 28 TD, 18 INT season. What’s average for Favre would be the second-highest total for the Jets in a single season to Vinny’s 29 TDs in 1998…with me betting that Favre would get 30, something he has done 8 times in his career (also, the 3,800 yards would be close to 2nd best in Jets history). Average Favre would likely be record-setting for the Jets. So, let’s keep the INTs in perspective.

  16. If a team is willing to give up what it would take to get him (likely a first rounder) i hope they would make that pick contingent on him not changing his mind and retiring before the season starts

  17. I have just as much a chance of starting for the New
    York Jets as Brett Favre.

I don’t want him because he isn’t Favre anymore. You could see that a couple years back. He falls short on his final come back drives and throws costly situational interceptions. We already have Chad to do that.

The only records Favre should have is his glorious consecutive game streak. The rest aren’t fair. How many more years did it take him to break Marino’s record than it took Marino to set it? Since he did play longer he does get the record but his kill in comparison is arguable.

Plus MADDEN (Not the man the game) IS TRYING TO LURE HIM BACK TO KILL HIM. If he stays retired the curse can’t get to him. You can say Vince Young wasn’t effected but did you see his passing stats. No curse there. If he comes back I guarantee something will happen to him.

  18. throw all the stats out there you want. Why did Favre get better all of a sudden last year after 7-8 years of mediocrity? Because his D & running game got better. We do not need the guy. Our QBs will be fine.

  19. Granted Favre might not be what he was 5 years ago, but he is still pretty damn good now, better then anything we’ve got. Didn’t Favre bring his team to the NFC championship game last year, I know he threw a bad int at the end, but he still got them to the final.

There is a possibility that a team wouldn’t have to give anything for Favre. If Favre insisted on returning, and GB doesn’t want him he would be a FA, and any team would be able to sign him. There is a strong possibility that GB does not want him back, they are ready to move on. If Favre was to come back they would almost certaintly have to trade Aaron Rodgers, who would not stand for Favre’s return.

  20. Trading for Favre would be the DUMBEST thing the Jets have ever done and as we all know, they’ve cornered the market on making DUMB personnel moves. Favre is an interception machine and one of the most overrated QBs of all time – lousy decision making is his worst trait.

I’d rather see Vinny come back for the 5th time than see Favre in green and white.

  21. Sure, over the course of their careers and taking last year in isolation, Favre is a huge upgrade, but back in just 2006 Chad was better than him. Sure, you could say that was because GB’s offensive line was lousy, but then you could make the same excuse for the Jets QB’s poor play last year.

While the Jets have a lot to prove, I like their chances over the next year or two a lot better than many supposed sleeper teams.

The Jets have invested heavily in aging hall of famers before and got burned, so (not that I think this is at all likely), they are probably best off in the medium to long term just retaining the pick and continuing to build.

As a neutral, I hope Brett retires a Packer.

  22. Somewhere Browning Nagle is laughing –

  23. It is beyond my comprehension that any Jet fan would not want Favre. Ok, not at any cost, but simply the idea of having him on our team. The guy is so much better than what we have it’s a non issue. It’s like saying we wouldn’t want Randy Moss if it meant giving up Coles. Love Coles, but with Moss, it’s bye bye LC.

Please, someone give me the downside of replacing Chad on the roster with Favre. Kellen isn’t going to complain about sitting behind a HOFer. And does anyone think Chad’s best days are ahead of him?

So please, someone give a good argument against it. And don’t give philosophical answers such as, “team chemistry will be upset”. Show some solid reasons why the Jets season would be better this year without Favre, and why it would adversely affect the near future of the team.

  24. If the jets got favre, I’d have to mute every game. Could you imagine having to listen to the never ending favre ass kissing that occupies every verbal thought of announcers who broadcast his games? It’s like all other story lines cease to exist. I want the guy to stay retired just so I don’t have to listen to that crap every time the packers get a MNF/sunday night game.

  25. Amen Brandon! I mute most of the games anyway!

  26. if he could not lead some good GB teams to the Super Bowl, in an inferior conference since 1997, what makes ANYONE think he would make us better? If we do not win the Super Bowl, we impeded KC’s progress another year.

  27. I’ll give you 12 million reasons.

  28. i love the jets, i love farve…….done

  29. Favre will never come here. Stop dreaming. You are all debating whether it would be an improvement if Favre came here — moot point, not happening. There are no positive reasons for him to come here.

  30. I can name a reason for him to come here, how about improved QB play.

I’m not saying KC will not be a good NFL QB, I think he will. I just think if we could get Favre for a year or two it would be fun. KC can play after that.

  31. Billvv, you didn’t give 1, never mind 12 million. Unless of course your talking about the cap hit. For 1 or 2 seasons, no big deal.

Harvlis, you didn’t give any downside to having Favre, the upside is that we make a major upgrade to the QB position.

To all those who want to “mute” the games, ask Green Bay fans if they muted the games last year as Favre led their team into the playoffs. If any did, they enjoyed the wins in silent bliss.

  32. I muted ESPN last night – now that Theismann Patrick McGuire team is broken up second worst in Morgan Miller

  33. JustAGreenGuy said
“How many more years did it take him to break Marino’s record than it took Marino to set it?”

If you consider Favre basically didn’t play his first season in Atlanta, than it took Favre one less season, otherwise the same amount of time.

    Favre ‘91 to ‘07

    Marino ‘83 to ‘99

  34. I despise Marino – but Favre is not in his league. Give him a taste of his own Madden medicine “big players, make big plays in big games.” Last one of those for Favre was in the ‘97 NFC title game @ SF

  35. Favre does have a ring though.

  36. Brett Favre has spoke with Mike Tannenbaum and Ted Thompson regarding his involvement in the NFL 2008 season. Favre will be traded for Chad Pennington and 2nd round draft pick. For more information ask Jack at Sierra college dorms.

  37. Pete57
I agree completely. Comparing Chad and Kellen to Bret is a joke unless you live in fantasyland. Chad’s is an injury waiting to happen and Kellen doesn’t have pocket presence and never will. The 12 million reasons can be managed if Bret signs for three years since in 2010 there is no salary cap. Trade a first round pick plus Chad for Bret = no brainer.

  38. The Packers won’t let Farve go to an NFC team.

  39. Favre is a much better QB than Marino. Look at their stats, Marino started 17 years with the Fins, Favre 16 with the Pack. Favre probably played in more games than Marino, but that’s part of what makes Favre great, he’s an ironman. Plus, Marino had 4 great seasons right at the beginning of his career, and never really matched that later. His last 4 years in the NFL were lackluster and caused his completion pct. to slip below 60% for his career. Favre just completed a Pro Bowl season with his career high completion pct. He has 96 TDs in his last 4 seasons, Marino had 68 in his last 4. Marino’s 2nd-4th seasons in the NFL were among the best ever by a QB (he got more than 1/4 of all his TDs in those 3 seasons) , but Favre has been amazingly consistent. There really is no comparison, Favre’s the better QB and I don’t really think it’s debatable.

Bent, I agree with you that Chad’s 2006 was better, but it was barely better. Favre had 1 more TD, threw for 500 more yards and carried a real terrible team to a .500 record. Favre had over 600 pass attempts in 2006; with a poor line and an injury-diminished Ahman Green, it was Favre to Driver or nothing. I like Chad, but Favre would get a lot more out of Coles, Jericho and the TEs than Chad ever could.

It’s a pipe dream to get Favre, but I just don’t think how getting him could possibly be a mistake for the Jets. The Jets have a huge question mark at QB, Favre is an instant 2-year upgrade and KC learns from a guy who is more of a role model for his style of play than Chad is. That’s “win-win” for me. Bent, you’re a Celtic fan, isn’t getting Favre and Faneca like getting Garnett and Allen?

  40. BREAKING NEWS: Senior reporter Mitch Davidson of the New York Daily News is now reporting that all involved with the New York Times have WAY too much free time on their hands. Brett Favre has denied all rumors that he will be traded to the Jets, and plans on remaining happily retired…… To win his ultimate quest for Mary, cause there’s just something about that girl……..

  41. Sack, I don’t like to draw parallels between the Jets and Celts, because most here don’t identify with them. But since you threw it out there, I’d say adding Favre would be more like Boston adding Reggie Miller, which the Celts almost did, but I was glad when they didn’t.

btw I love Favre. Living legend. However, after 2006 everyone thought he was done. They were wrong because he had one year left in him, but did he have two or three? Not sure.

  42. Pete,
There is no down side to getting Brett Favre. What I said was – It isn’t happening so, stop dreaming. If you were Favre, would you come to a 4-12 team, far from home, no outstanding wideouts, questionable O-Line with no back-ups, questionable defense, young coaching staff that looked like crap last year, and playing in the swamps of New Jersey! No Shot!

  43. Paul- Marino missed whole seasons with knee injurys. Favres durability is what he is known for. If Marino had stayed healthy Favre wouldn’t have touched his record.

    BTW I hate Marino too

  44. Bent, not a fair comparison between Favre and Miller, who was out of the game and was never considered to be among the 5 best ever at his position all-time. Also, I think there was no mystery to the Favre resurgence…the Pack’s running game and defense drastically improved, so Favre didn’t have to chuck over 600 passes. Favre’s 2007 was among the best in his storied career, including his best ever completion pct. Favre’s physical condition and arm-strength haven’t been questioned, it was his desire to be the proverbial “one-arm paper hanger” on a dismal team or continue going through the rigors of the NFL. Like Montana with the Chiefs, I think Favre could have a couple good years with the Jets. But, it won’t happen.

  45. I think it’s at least a reasonably fair comparison because there are fewer positions in basketball, so if he’s top 50 all time then that probably puts him on the same level as Favre. Both are hall of famers that are getting up there in age, whereas I still see Allen and Garnett as (just about) in their prime (and it showed in the finals). Point taken that Miller had been out of the game though, but hopefully you can see how the analogy I made could illustrate the potential downside.

Favre is awesome and his whole career has been littered with fairytale moments. But he did look like an old man at the end of that Giants game.

Let’s hope the Jets running game and defense also drastically improves and leads to a similar upswing in QB play – whoever that guy is.

Favre must be special if you’re in his corner and he’s only 6-2!!!

  46. Harvlis, I agree with you, that it is highly unlikely Favre would come here. I was just trying find out why there are Jet fans who wouldn’t want him on our team.

  47. JustAGreenGuy, Marino played in 15 less games during his careeer.

I personally think that Marino was the better QB, but not by much. If they could have Favre for a season or two I would do it, depending on the cost of it.

  48. Marino at his best was better than Favre at his best. Also Shula is one of the most over rated coaches in football. He couldn’t build a decent defense after all those years. Yikes!!!!

  49. Its so sad that we have to compare chad and kellen to Farve… If farve was reading this right now hed think we we are all moron’s… all i kno is that jet fans have waited 40 years and if adding a 38-39 year old QB who is WAY better then our 31 and 24 year old qb then i say get him… age is not a factor when it comes to farve and maybe he can teach chad on how to throw more TD’s then INT’s even when you have 18-20 INTs in a season… ive waited to long and have suffered to much to see another season where i just want to blow my brains out… so let the geaser play and enjoy this season
