2008 Pro Football Prospectus is Here!!

by Bassett on July 9th, 2008 at 1:55 pm

If you haven’t realized, we here at TJB love football … a lot.  Like a lot a lot.  Like creepy alot.

I look forward to the day that Football Outsiders football bible Pro Football Prospectus comes out every year, and as of today it is at booksellers now, and after a quick perusal, it’s worth every penny.  The 490 page compendium runs down teams, players and contains insightful articles like “Building a Better Draft Value Chart” which are all extremely well written and use statistical analysis as the basis for what they write rather than half-baked conjecture based on anecdotal one-offs.

If you are a football nut, and want to better understand why things happen, or will happen, this is the book for you.   You don’t have to be a stats wonk (I certainly am not) to get it, as everything is explained in depth.

Again, if you love football and love to talk about it (and this is the important part) and like to know what you are talking about in the process, this book is for you.

I’ll give you a breakdown of what was written about the Jets later tonight, but I wanted to encourage you to check it out as soon as you can.  You can find it at this link on Amazon, or at major booksellers (Barnes & Noble, Borders) everywhere.

Bassett, glad you brought this up. I concur on the Prospectus, Outsiders, and Aaron Schatz, who I met last year at a book signing in DC. Despite his being a Pats fan, he’s highly impressive and helps you understand football and fantasy football on a much smarter level, to the point that other so-called fantasy experts will sound like predictable parrots. The funny thing is that I didn’t recognize until he spoke at the book signing that he doesn’t fancy himself a fantasy football guy. Amazingly, his “Kubiak” Excel spreadsheet that is sold on their site is the best draft tool there is.
In terms of the NYJ, he got a lot right about our regression toward the mean last year, so I’m eager for my now-unembargoed Amazon package to arrive later today.
And you gotta’ heed the words of a guy who can almost predict injuries before they occur. Must’ve been scary for guys like L.J. to read that before the season.

Another thought, Bassett: You should get SNY to put Schatz on Jets Nation in the coming weeks. Love the show, but it could use something like this. I think Ray’s ears would start bleeding from all the substantive analysis.

I picked it up yesterday at Borders on 33rd St. Did some quick reads on some of the Jets’ players – they think favorably of Clemens’ prospects for 2008. The blurb on Pennington contains a blatant factual error (“he engineered a victory over Tennessee” late in the season – that was actually a 13-9 loss.) And they really love Cotchery.
