Pros & Cons of Brett Being a Jet

Since some of you seem determined to talk about this, at least here’s a place for you to use for comments.

With the news yesterday that Favre has asked the Packers for his unconditional release, people in New York are starting to get lathered up about the idea of Favre becoming a Jet … probably no one moreso than a certain SI writer in Montclair New Jersey.

Either way, I personally don’t think it’s going to happen, but for those of you who seem to be setting yourself up for a major letdown on this topic, here are the pros and cons on adding Favre to the Jets.

Note: These aren’t what I believe, but what I perceive a reasonable person would believe …

Pros

  • Immediately solves the issue of who the Quarterback is for 2008.
  • Favre’s worst years in terms of passing yards are around Pennington’s single best (3,300).
  • Even though a ‘Gunslinger’ Favre brings together the arm and field leadership that both Pennington & Clemens have, but don’t already possess in one person.
  • Could easily contend for AFC East in 2008.
  • A franchise QB is the last major piece (the rest is window dressing) that this team needs to put together a serious postseason run.
  • Familiar with one target already (Bubba Franks).
  • Wrangler Jeans for the whole team.

Cons

  • Doesn’t solve long-term QB issue & throws Kellen Clemens onto the scrap heap.
  • Favre would need to adjust to the offense that Schottenheimer runs.
  • Favre won’t tow the company line set forth for the rest of the team by Tangini.
  • Competitive bid situation. Team would likely be giving away high draft pick(s) to acquire Favre.
  • When will he retire the next time? Will Favre play too long? How does the team get out of the situation then if it repeats itself.
  • Favre benefits from a prolonged close association with the team, but which impairs the team to a non-quantifiable degree (also know as parasitism).
  • Wrangler Jeans for the whole team.

  1. You know what they say, most teams have the “win now” attitude. I’m not saying it’s very likely, but with additions along the same lines (although hopefully not as short term) like Faneca, who knows?

  2. This is news because…there is not much going on in the NFL for another two weeks. I would NOT want him on the team for two reasons. 1- we have a young quaterback that needs to play this year. How are we ever going to know what we have if he doesn’t play behind a good line? 2- Everyone talks about Favre and how he played last year, but he had two bad years before that. What is the guarantee that he will play well this year?
I like what we have on this team, let’s see if they all live up to their contracts…..

  3. I have mixed emotions about brett favre. He should have been a jet many years ago except for atlanta taking him right before the JETS picked in the draft. He could help the JETS win now, but he would set kellen clemens back and I think clemens is the real deal. So let’s pass on favre and move forward.

    Ed

  4. If Brett would come to the Jets we should do everything to get him–no matter how it makes Chad and KC feel. We don’t have a QB folks. Deal with it. KC might be a QB, and Chad was good QB. Brett IS a great QB. Move on. To what? The unknown. Jets should go after him full throttle.

  5. Its so sad that we have to compare chad and kellen to Farve… If farve was reading this right now hed think we we are all moron’s… all i kno is that jet fans have waited 40 years and if adding a 38-39 year old QB who is WAY better then our 31 and 24 year old qb then i say get him… age is not a factor when it comes to farve and maybe he can teach chad on how to throw more TD’s then INT’s even when you have 18-20 INTs in a season… ive waited to long and have suffered to much to see another season where i just want to blow my brains out… so let the geaser play and enjoy this season

  6. haha wrangler jeans for the whole team on pros and cons

  7. I don’t understand him setting KC back. If Chad ends up starting this year over Clemens, then what would be the difference if Favre was QB? Yes it’s sort term, and that would actually be a good thing. Let Clemens sit one more year behind Favre. If the Packers release Favre, then it shouldn’t cost the Jets anything other than money to sign him. At that point why not? I still don’t see Favre coming to the Jets though. It’s not going to happen.

Hey, let’s not forget because the Falcons drafted Favre, we got Nagle. I’m just saying.

  8. I have to go with Peter King here and say that he won’t be released by the Pack. They would rather see him rot on the bench than light it up for Minnesota or Chicago. Lets put some faith in Kellen already!

  9. PRO:

They could finally part ways with Chad without Chad lovers being upset about it!

  10. con we need 2 c wat KC can do and yea he will probably 4 a yr anyway and the last season might have been luck cuz look at him hes 3 4 crying out loud

  11. DO NOT WANT HIM – WOUD BE A DISASTER. Favre is most overrated quartberback of last 20 years. Look at his post-season record from 1998 on? He plays worse against good defeses than Chad does!

  12. There will be no Farve. Lets look forward to a punishing ground game, and what has the making of a top defensive unit.

  13. Toon,

I agree, lets not play “rent a QB” and take a guy that us a Packer, not a JET!

  14. Go Ahead and Add Favre for a couple of years, and in the meantime keep looking for the next Franchise QB. Whether it’s another veteran in a trade or a rookie in the draft.

  15. Trade a #2 for him and then trade Pennington to the Vikings for a second day pick — If the Vikings won’t take Pennington, then put Favre on the open market for a #1 — If you’re stuck with both Favre and Pennington, then cut Clemens and draft Curtis Painter in ‘09 –

  16. I’m all about giving Kellen Clemens his shot; yet, were Jets to higher gunslinger Brett Favre as the new sherriff in Dodge City, I’d embrace it as a surreal for real, win now chapter in an otherwise dull decade… since the Big Tuna days.

Yet, this whole highered hand philosophy including our off season reallt smacks of the Yankees – yuck!

  17. hey guys…

if our recievers struggled to catch passes thrown by KC what makes you guys think they can catch a ball from BRET’s cannon…to be honest,i would rather go with KC behind this line and see what he can do with some time to throw…just my thoughts…

  18. One of my biggest problems with Favre is that with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line under the best situation — at Lambeau Field with a frenzy of Packer fans pulling for him — he quit.

Watch the NFC championship game again — it was clear that he was done, that he was an old player that had thrown in the towel when the going got tough. He wanted no part of going back out there at the end in the cold when the team was down. And if he gave up with the Super Bowl that close and under those conditions, there’s no way he’s gonna give a damn here, especially with a team that a bit further away from a potential championship.

It’s no accident the Packers are willing to let him go — if any other QB played the way he has the past few years (stretches of last year notwithstanding), they would’ve benched him a while ago. All that annoying “gunslinger” talk is the media politely saying “he constantly makes bad decisions.”

Look, Favre of 1998 was the best player in the game. The Favre of 2008 … not so much. I just don’t think he’d be a good fit here at this point.

  19. R in CT, I think Favre in 1998 and 2007 were the best. In between those years not so much. Question is that he would be a grea upgrade over any QB in our roster. The biggest problem is that he is 38 and he will be learning a new system. He also has no chemistry with the team, which takes years to build. It would be tough for him going back to any team except the Packers, who have clearly moved on. I think he should move on and retire.

  20. I don’t like the idea of Favre playing for any team other than the Packers. It just wouldn’t be right.

  21. Let’s be honest, at this point in his career Favre is more legend than substance. His best years are far behind him– he often forces passes into tight and sometimes double coverage which usually results in turnovers. Not only will acquiring him set us back in the future, it will set us back immediately. I don’t think he could put the Jets over .500 if he played for them.

  22. Favre:

Pro: At least his INTs are down the field and do not put the opposition in great field position
Con: In a trade he costs $39 million over three years and he’s 38 years old.

    Pennington:

Pro: He completed over 60% of his passes in 6 games last year but won only once.
Con: When his 5 yard outs get picked its 6 points for the opposition.

    Clemens:

Pro: He can throw INTs down the field just like Favre
Con: He hasn’t completed over 60% of his passes in only one game last year.

  23. Sorry,

meant Clemens completed over 60% of his passes in only one game last year.

  24. Farve, is not the answer and isn’t , I repeat isn’t going to be a JET period.

  25. I think that Brett Favre is making a big deal out of his retirement (Sorry he is in limbo right now , he is probably talking to his wife.) “I have to go out and get chicken.”

Obviously as fans we want the hype and the drama to keep going to make a story out of it and fantasize about what could be but he clearly needs a doctor. I mean his head is either screwed on with the notion of just making money or all of those pills from years past have gone to his head. He is making a big deal of himself. We dont need him simply because we have our present and future at the QB spot right there. 1. Pennington. 2. Clemens. 3. Ainge. He doesnt impress me, he has won only a superbowl in 16 years with all of the players that have played for Green Bay during those years and its not like he has just recently won that SuperBowl either. He had a chance last year with an opportunity to appear at another SuperBowl with everything in place (1.home field in the NFC Championship game. 2.Solid defense. 3.Sound running game.) it shows that he needs his team more than they need him and he didnt show that he could contribute enough to win at that moment so why should we risk our 100 million dollars plus worth of signing free agents and draft picks when we will have to prove first off to win our division. He is not a miracle worker at the QB position. We have to seriously consider what Mangini is trying to work with here and he has a quarterbacks dual come this and next month.

  26. Pro: all jets players will have easier access to pain killers.

    Con: everything else.

  27. “smacks lik the Yankees?” who does santana pitch for?

  28. As much as I admire Favre and have always marveled at his talent, he would only be a temporary fix for the Jets. We seem to have a plan in place, lets stick with it and forget the instant gratification.

  29. Favre just finished a Pro Bowl season in which he was awesome. So, it’s not age with Favre; it’s attitude. It’s pretty obvious that Favre has a major beef with the Pack FO. So, Favre’s first season with any team will be the “I told you so” season. He’ll play great. It’s the second season when Favre would play his games…retire, not retire. My analysis is simple. KC is not ready to be an NFL QB and Favre is, hands down, a better QB than Chad.

Favre, because of his great downfield passing ability, was never a pure West Coast QB. But, the Jets offense is not geared for 500+ pass attempts, so there’s something to the problem that Schott would have to modify the passing game to utilize Favre’s talents, but that’s what he’s paid for. Also, Favre’s skill set is what KC aspires to, so a change in offense for Favre could only help KC, who won’t have to run Chad’s offense, something he just doesn’t have the aptitude for. I see Favre as being good for KC, who will be far more humiliated if Chad beats him out. But, there’s no shame in being the back up for a Hall of Famer.

I think the Jets should see what it would take to get Favre. If the price is right, why not swap Chad for Favre?

  30. I mean, get Favre and then trade or cut Chad.

  31. Sack,

Your suggestion would definetely help out both clubs. Chad would provide a veteran backup other then Favre, Chad would not mess up their team chemistry, as Favre would if he were to come back to GB.

Favre would provide us with the answer to the one question we haven’t solved yet. Signing Favre would make us an instant AFC contender. However, I think it would come at the expense of long term success and stability. I think we would get this season out of him because of what you said about the “I told you so” factor, after that it would be the same circus that GB has been experiencing with the retire- unretire scenario.

So, as I said above, as much fun as it would be to have Favre this season, I think we should pass and stick to the plan in place.

  32. Why is this even a discussion?
    1) The last 4 years, Favre has averaged +4 in terms of TD over INT
    2) He would have to learn an entire new offense

This would be dumber than the Yankees trading for Kevin Brown & Randy Johnson. we would be paying $12MM for a guy way past his prime – last year was an aberration.

Since 2001, Favre is 3-5 win playoffs: 0-2 on road & only 3-3 at home. 14 TDS & 16 INts. and that is against the NFC

  33. toon238, Favre’s Pack teams for 2 of the last 4 years were awful. Bad OL, terrible running game and no defense. Favre led the NFL in pass attempts 2 of those 4 years. Last season, with a good running game and a drastically improved defense, Favre had the HIGHEST completion pct. of his CAREER. And, the “learning a new offense” think is a lot less difficult for a savvy veteran like Favre.

He’s, hands down, a better QB than Chad. As for KC, I suspect a lot of the “no way Brett” crowd also believes that KC is the real deal and Favre would delay his ascendancy to the QB pantheon. Well, IMO, KC would benefit far more by watching a guy like Favre perform than by starting this season. If the choice is Chad or Favre, c’mon, isn’t that a no-brainer?

I don’t think the Jets will ultimately land Favre and I don’t even know if Favre is serious about playing in ‘08. But, Favre would make the Jets an instant factor in the AFC. IMO, no QB in NFL history has been able to utilize his TE as a deep threat more than Favre. With Coles, J-Co and Keller, Favre has the tools to flirt with the Jets’ all-time records for yards and TDs. The offense would be a powerhouse and you could forget 8-men in the box or all out blitzes. It would literally amaze all of us as to what a competent QB could do for the Jets, like when Vinny T took over in ‘98. But, Favre is much better than Vinny T. Literally, anything would be possible with Favre at the helm, including a Super Bowl appearance. So, even if he’s just okay for 1 season, it would be some season.

  34. sack –

“no way brett” is not a matter of thinking KC is the real deal. it’s realizing that a determination needs to be made IF KC is the real deal – or if they need to go in a new direction via draft or free agency. favre’s presence prevents that decision from being made and delays the jets progress at that position for another year or two.

Plus, if you’ve watched favre play (especially over the last few years), you see that he makes terrible decisions with the football. His poor interception seasons weren’t a result of poor OL play. it was a result of him constantly heaving the ball into double and triple coverage, and diminishing physical abilities which could no longer compensate for poor decisions.

Add in the idea of giving up a 1st day draft choice, the salary cap problems favre would bring with him, and the press coverage that comes with him – and it’s pretty undesirable.

  35. Favre in 2008 better than Vinny in 1998? I will walk to NY from San Diego if Favre throws at least 20 TDS and has a 4:1 TD:Int ratio like Vinny had in 1998.

The risk is not worth the reward: if we take a flier on Favre, and do not win the Super Bowl it is a disaster. This regime loses all credibility with the long-term culture they are trying to establish.

Plus, we are not signing the in his prime Favre, we are siging an over the hill guy who happened to have a good seasin in 2007.

His 2001 GB team was a good team – he faced a decent defense on the road in St. Louis and threw SIX ints. That 2001 team was better than our 2006 team. Chad faced a better defense @ NE than Favre did @ Stl. Chad had a much better game. Decisions are not made based on one game, I understand that. But we are all drinking the Madden kool-aid if we think Favre will win a super bowl.

If this team is good enough to win a Super Bowl, then we can do so with either KC or Chad at the helm. If it is not, Favre is not going to make a spit of a difference.

  36. Brandon, but you’re making a HUGE assumption that KC will win the QB competition. My analysis is Chad or Favre because I don’t think KC will win the competition and I think Favre would be a better mentor/role model for KC. We also disagree on Favre’s ability. I thought his 2005 and 2006 teams were terrible. When the offense is all on the QB’s shoulders, INTs are inevitable. Plus, I just don’t think it’s statistically valid to say that a guy who routinely completes more than 60% of his passes and racks up over 3,800 yards passing makes lots of poor decisions. Plus, if his skills were declining, then explain last season, when Favre had one of his best seasons ever. If the “first day pick” is a 3rd rounder (Schlegel for Favre?), then it’s not that high a price. And, my scenario includes cutting Chad and the uncapped year, so I don’t think the salary cap issues are all that serious. Press coverage undesirable? Favre as the lightning rod helps everyone else. The Baker situation…an afterthought. VG’s progress; who cares. Woody’s contract; Pace’s contract; Jenkins’ weight; BT’s “confession”…they all get swept under the rug. The only problem is, potentially, next season when Favre plays “Hamlet” on whether he retires or not.

toon238, I hate to play “what if” but Favre on the ‘98 team, and we’re in Miami. If you really think Vinny T is a better QB than Favre, then I really can’t respond. Vinny’s ‘98 was, more or less, a career aberration, Favre’s average season is so much superior to Vinny’s that I can’t even start to compare them. And, that goes double for your belief that Favre isn’t better than Chad, who has never had a statistically better 16-game season, than Favre’s 2007 and KC, who if he gets above the 10 worst QBs in the NFL this season would be a major accomplishment. Also, I thought the Jets’ FO was trying to instill a winning culture, hiring a guy for 2 years who has only had one losing season in 16 professional campaigns sort of advances that goal, right?

Hey, all this is academic, but getting Favre at this time when the Jets do not have an adequate QB on the roster makes sense. It won’t happen because, when it comes to the QB position, the Jets rarely make the right move.

  37. all I am saying is that I would be willing to put as much as I have on Favre not having as good as 2008 as Vinny in 1998.

Please explain how you think we win AFC title game in Denver with Favre instead of Vinny.

  38. __pros

a chance to win the super bowl

  39. toon238, with Favre, that game is played in the Meadowlands because the Jets beat San Fran in game 1 or Baltimore in game 2 and the Colts in game 11, so the Jets and Broncos both go 14-2 and the Jets get homefield based upon either a perfect AFC record, or common opponents, because the Jets beat Miami twice and the Broncos lost to the Fins. Favre has as strong (if not stronger) arm than Vinny, but his mobility really sets them apart. And, Favre is no worse a gunslinger than Vinny T.

  40. SackDance99 — Glenn Foley started against SF and BAL in 98 –

  41. Foley started the first 2 games in 1998

  42. vinny was also younger than favre(2007) in 98. At 38, farve would need to commit to playing two years to make it a worthwhile trade for us. I dont see that happening. Heres a though, bring back Vinny as the third Qb/Qb coach. Also, no way the Jets are gonna cut chad and eat that money.

  43. Cover of Madden. No draft picks for anyoen on that blasted thing.

  44. I’m not going to argue the pros and cons based on stats here, sack, toon et al have done a fine job, but why is everyone glossing over the salary cap ramifications as if they are nothing? Favre has 3 years left at 13 million per, how on earth are we fitting that contract under the cap? For those who say he will be released and we can sign him off the street for less, forget it, no way the pack does that, a) they want to control where he goes (not chicago or minnesota) and b) he is an asset that they can clearly get something for (1st or 2nd rd pick) , so why give that up for nothing? Won’t happen, and even if it did, wouldn’t it take at least 10 mill to sign him?

  45. All thats said above is true. Lets all get off this Favre trip, and focus on our issues. If we need a qb, Daunte culpepper is cheap and relatively young and healthy after a full off-season of rehab. Also lets not forget, Chads money counts towards the cap, so unless we trade him (which will be hard enough with all the negative press on him) we can tdo anything at the qb position. Who ever starts need to STEP UP HIS GAME behind this strong new O-line.

  46. vinnywasthebest — Clemens could step up like Terry Bradshaw did after his uneven start — Chad cannot step up — He is what he is which is damaged goods –

  47. Guys, my point was not made well. If in ‘98 the Jets had gotten Favre, he would’ve been obtained to start from day 1, so I wasn’t comparing Vinny to Favre directly. Their circumstances are different. Vinny was a journeyman and a question mark when he joined the Jets at 35 (he started for the Jets in ‘01 at 38, by the way). Favre would only go to a team that he would start for, so I projected that Favre would’ve been playing from day 1 and maybe would’ve won one of those 2 games. Plus, he beats the Colts in week 11…why no mention of that game?

I’ve said this on another thread. But, the Jets would save some money by trading or cutting Chad (why not cut Chad in order to sign Favre?) and, then, the rest of Favre’s contract could be redone in a cap friendly manner. Tannenbaum is the NFL’s best capologist, so I don’t think the cap is an issue (plus, what about the uncapped year? If that happens, you’ll see a lot of contracts redone so cash is front-loaded in the uncapped year. Knowing Tannenbaum, if there is an uncapped year, the next capped year we will see the Jets ridiculously under the cap).

  48. I saw this fun fact from today’s NYT article about Favre:

According to “Pro Football Prospectus 2008,” Favre was 1,437 yards better than a “replacement level” quarterback (a rookie or an off-the-rack backup) last season — about 90 yards a game

I do not have the numbers for Chad and KC, but I’ll guess that both played somewhere south of “replacement level” last season. So, wouldn’t Favre be a huge upgrade? I mean, at least, 90 extra yards a game is a lot, right? Just more fuel on this fire…..

  49. Capwise, the money saved by cutting Chad would be less than $2m if memory serves. But yes, I’d imagine that Favre joining another team (whoever it is) could depend on him reworking his deal.

Plus if they traded for him, they could theoretically cut him or trade him again at any point with no accelerated cap hit, so the long term financial risk is lower than a mid-priced free agent.

  50. If you’re going to (indirectly) quote PFP, Sack, remember that seanmac said that, in PFP, KC and Chad both had pretty good forecasts for the 2008 season, so based on their numbers I strongly doubt that the projected upgrade (if any) would be worth the overall cost.

  51. I was in the Hoosier Dome for that game in 1998 – talk about bad memories.

  52. Bent, but forecasts are inherently subjective, while assessing past performance is objective. Objectively, Favre was a far superior QB last season to either Chad or KC…that’s what the whole “replacement level” analysis is supposed to do, put all the QBs on a level playing field. Subjectively, in FO’s view (which I do not share), KC will have a great season, be better than Chad and, likely, not be materially worse than Favre. I just do not believe that FO’s analysis is valid because it projects that KC will have his best season in football since high school. There’s something screwy and statistically invalid in FO’s analysis. Or, stated differently, there’s no factual or statistical precedent for the type of improvement that FO is projecting for KC. I would love to see a single example where an inexperienced QB with the worst numbers in football magically becomes a league leader the next season. Play at just the replacement level for KC would be a huge improvement; FO is projecting far better than that and I just don’t think that will happen, do you? Also, I think FO is predicting that KC will out play Big Ben. Do you think that will happen? And, even if you did, it would not be based upon stats, it would be based on the type of fuzzy logic, hunches and feelings that most stats guys eschew. I just want stat geeks like the guys at FO to be consistent. Stick to the stats and forget the assumptions.

  53. Actually, seanmac’s numbers must have been preliminary. While I think KC’s projection for 2008 is still over-optimistic; it’s not great: 57.7% completion pct., 20 TDs, 17 INTs for 3,099 yards and a -25.2% DVOA. Judging from the poor DVOA, I would expect fewer yards, a worse completion pct. and more INTs. Chad’s overall projection is better: 62.6% completion pct., 2,876 yards, 21 TDs, 16 INTs and a -15.6% DVOA; but, I don’t think anyone thinks Chad’s numbers are so much better to declare him a clear winner for the job based on FO’s projection. Favre’s 2008 projection is stellar: 64.4 completion pct., 4,032 yards, 22 TDs, 13 INTs and a +23.6% DVOA. So, FO’s numbers are a KO, Favre would far outperform either Chad or KC.

  54. That’s OK. I am not arguing with what you said, just thought I would throw it into the discussion.

The numbers have indeed got worse but would 1.8% better completion percentage, 1 TD and 3 less interceptions really be worth all that money and a first day pick? (Note…that is not a third rounder anymore so your Schlegel comment does not apply).

I know Favre has a lot more yards, but that is at least partly based on the fact they expect the Jets to run the ball a lot more.

  55. Bent, but you’re not factoring in what Favre would do for the running game. Favre just can’t be blitzed effectively. His ability to throw with pace off of his back leg, quick release (with pace) and good (if not great) mobility in the pocket, make blitzing him unsound. So, 8 men in the box against Favre is suicide. Against Chad, it’s a challenge to him to pass deep. We saw defenses time and agian last year stack the line and it was ugly. KC will be blitzed relentlessly because his defense recognition and pocket poise are questionable. The defense just can’t get too gimmicky with Favre. The Jets, who were already decent at running right up the middle, with Faneca, who is a great run-blocker, would just kill teams with power running right up the gut. Favre is just a better QB in almost every facet of the game. In fact, it’s his supreme confidence that gets him in trouble; he thinks he can complete passes to anyone anywhere on the field. But, if Schott/Mangini can have him buy into the program, which would likely prolong Favre’s career by not making him toss over 500 attempts, the Jets offense could be dominant.

FO’s numbers tend to bear out two of my central arguments about the Jets, for the most part, this decade. The offense is much worse than the defense. In particular, the Jets’ redzone offense is awful. Favre is a quick fix for both problems. We just don’t know what superior QB play could do for the Jets because we’ve seen it so rarely–1998 and 2002. I know it’s not a perfect comparison, but here I go. We all knew that Willie Randolph was an inferior manager. But, we had no idea what just a competent manager could do for the Mets. Well, 9 wins in a row and a record-breaking pitching performance later, we’re getting a clue. But, to me, swapping Randolph for Manuel is nowhere near the magnitude of change swapping Chad/KC for Favre. It’s like swapping Art Howe for a combination of Sparky, Leyland, La Russa, Stengel and Weaver.

And, I disagree with your assessment on what the Pack would take. They need to get Favre out of the NFC and, moreover, they need to trade Favre to a team that the Pack will not play. In the AFC, the Jets are probably the best team without a bona fide NFL QB. The Jets are a choice that would fit both Favre’s desire to go to a team in contention (Faneca and Favre…are you kidding me?) and the Pack’s desire not to see Brett against the Pack, unless it’s in the Super Bowl. A 3rd rounder and maybe a conditional pick in ‘10 might just get it done.

This probably won’t happen; but, now, I am certain that it could and shame on Mangini and Tannenbaum if they don’t try to get it done.

  56. Most national media types have ruled out Favre going to the Jets because they are not a contender. I agree with you that decent QB play would certainly make us a very good team, but why would Favre share our assessment of the Jets rather than the widely held one? Therefore, I am not convinced it could happen as you, even if it should (which I am not convinced of either – even with Favre’s durability he is a risk at that age).

I liked the analogy, but loads of people here would say that the same analogy could equally be applied to Chad or Clemens…think how much better they could perform with just an adequate offensive line.

I do agree our QB play must improve. How that happens is not my decision, thankfully.
