Favre Update: “It’s a Long Shot”

by Bassett on July 13th, 2008 at 8:46 am

Gary Myers of the Daily News spoke to an “NFL source familiar with the Jets’ thinking” about Brett Favre and there seems to be little chance that the team would go after him.

“It’s a long shot right now that the Jets have any interest. I wouldn’t spend any time on that,” an NFL source familiar with the Jets’ thinking told the Daily News Saturday. “I can’t rule out 100% they won’t have interest, but I would say it’s 90%-95%. I would be very surprised if he wound up with the Jets.”

“Of course, if the Packers cut Favre and he’s willing to play for the minimum, things could change,” the source said. “But that’s not going to happen.”

I’m not saying that Favre wouldn’t help the team, but look at it from Tannenbaum and Mangini’s perspective. They don’t have the cap space, they don’t want to give up a high draft pick and adding a player who has the ability to greatly overshadow the coaching and culture just isn’t their way.

Johnny, I have whined as much as the next Jet fan (c.f., loser).

But, for all our belly aching, one could be a fan of the seven teams who were in the league around when we won: Buffalo Bills, San Diego Chargers, Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals, Tennessee Titans/Houston Oilers, or the eight expansion teams: Cincinnati Bengals, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars,, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns (in name only for those in the know), New Orleans Saints, and the Seattle Seahawks. None of these teams have ever won a SB. By my count, fans of almost half the teams in the league have never won a SB. Odds are the number won’t change after this season (and they can only change by one).

Worse, fans of the Jills, Iggles, and Vikings are real losers having all had a shot at the big game more than once and muffed them all.

I would lke to have Favre on the team, but not for a high draft pick.

  4. avatar SackDance99 says:

I’m a little critical of the Mangini/Tannenbaum team when it comes to QB. Parcells, recognizing that O’Donnell, Foley, etc, weren’t going to get it done at QB, quickly in year 2 got Vinny. Here we are in year 3 of the Tangini regime and the QB position is a mess and is the glaring difference between the Jets and the AFC leaders. Favre would be a short-term stop gap, and a really good one. Then, the Jets could take a look at the QB candidates for the future like KC and/or Ainge and Ratliff and make a longer term decision. But, right now, this franchise will be hampered by inadequate play at QB, which limits the upside potential for this team.

  5. avatar SackDance99 says:

Also, isn’t it telling that Miami is rumored to interested in Favre? Parcells, at least, knows the importance of QB to a franchise’s future. Why not Tangini?

  6. avatar Brandon "You're With Me"riweather says:

no. no, it’s not. not telling at all.

the qb’s on miami’s roster right now are John Beck, Chad Henne, and Josh McCown. rumor has it they’re also interested in digging up johnny unitas and signing him to a contract.

  7. avatar Johnny Styne says:

Harlan — None of the teams you mention match the groundbreaking ineptitude displayed by the Jets organization since SB III — When the Jets are good they find new and interesting ways to screw it up (Keith Byars fumbling against Denver) — When the Jets are bad, as has been the case far more often then not, they have been bad in ways no one previously had imagined (Neil O’Donnell injuring his leg in pregame warmups) — Point being, is Woody Johnson so derelict in his ownership that he won’t even order his football management to find out what the Packers want for Favre? — A rhetorical question –

  8. avatar Bent says:

Oooh…”a source” said it, so it *must* be true. How is this story any different in nature to the one Bassett was blasted by several people for posting just a few days ago?

Why do the Daily News bother to post this nonsense?

  9. avatar K.C. says:

we dont need brett favre….we need a BIG TALL FAST wide reciever with HANDS!

  10. I like Favre, but agree with Basset’s insights into Tannenbaum and Mangini’s perspective.

Don’t let the free agency spending fool ya. Jets took on some expensive veterans, but untimately want to get younger tallent to buy into team first mentality.

With an improve ofensive line and running game, look for Kellen Clemens to make major strides.

I don’t see Packers allowing Favre to finishe carreer in Minnesota or Chicago. Hopefully, he”’ land in Baltimore to mentor QB Stud Joe Flacco.

  11. avatar SackDance99 says:

Brandon, so the choice of Chad, KC and Ainge is so much better than Miami’s? If anything, the only thing that makes the Jets’ choices better is the fact that Chad is better than any of Miami’s choices (especially McCown), but most fans on this blog want to throw Chad under a bus (just a note to KC fans, John Beck had a higher completion pct. on a far inferior team than KC did…arguably, as a pure rookie, Beck showed as much promise as KC and while I think Ainge has as much upside as Henne most pundits disagree…so, beck/henne might be a better young duo than KC/Ainge). We aren’t like the Pats, where your namesake plays, with a clear no. 1 QB. To paraphrase you, if Joe Willie didn’t have double knee replacements and an AARP card, he’d be in the QB competition.

  12. avatar john l says:

favre would never be able to handle new york…he would go back on pills again

  13. avatar pat d says:

    favre would thrive in ny.

mangini get favre and get a ring.

  14. avatar Brandon "You're With Me"riweather says:

Sack, – yes, chad/kc/ainge is much better. They have a rookie, a guy in beck that they though so little of they drafted another QB a year later, and a guy in McCown who is quite frankly, terrible.

The jets have a young QB who is at a point in his career where the team can make an assessment on his future (only if he plays – not if he gets buried on the depth chart by favre). it’s a totally different situation in miami because they don’t have a decent option for this year.

  15. avatar pat d says:

    Brandon

Unless last years perforance by Chad was because of his ankle injury I don’t think the Jets option at QB is much better than Miami.

I say let Kellen be buried on the depth chart by Favre. If he is any good he will rise to the top. But I don’t see that happening.

That being said I don’t see Mangini and Tannenbaum letting Favre onto the team. This is a mistake. Not only in the case of Favre but of limiting your options in general.

  16. avatar mike sanders says:

Are you guys crazy! We could use favre in the worst way. Our qb situation is woeful. With Favre under center with our new line he gives us a legitimate chance at making the playoffs. With Chad or Kellen as QB we are going nowhere fast.

  17. avatar billvv says:

Jets don’t have 12 million to even think of Favre! The past is the past, we don’t know what the future brings until at least the pre-season. Only then will we know what we’re in for. Good or bad.

  18. avatar RK says:

For the Favre supporters, assuming that an old QB who is used to a different system can come right in and perform well is a big reach and it doesn’t matter who that QB is.

Also adjusting to a lifestyle so different than the one in GB, getting to know players and their abilities as well as a new coaching staff, new terminology, etc. will hamper his adjustment.

Add to that he has performed poorly at times in the system that he does know (70.9 & 72.7 passer rating in`05 and `06), he is no longer the gun slinger he was, did have an addiction to pain killers, is coming out of retirement (just to show his mindset), and probably cannot scramble well enough behind a line that was poor last year, it does not seem like a good fit.

  19. avatar BubbyBrister/shovelpass says:

Hey Sack, i gotta chime in on your Parcells comment..”Parcells, recognizing that O’Donnell, Foley, etc, weren’t going to get it done at QB, quickly in year 2 got Vinny. ” This was the guy who played Scott Bruener over Phil Simms, this was the guy that had only Ray Lucas backing up Vinny, this was the guy who went into Dallas and coached Hutchinson, Quincy Crack Carter, Bledsoe, and a washed up Vinny before going with Tony romo, and the only reason that this team still has Romo, whom Tuna wanted to cut, is because Sean Payton begged him to keep him. Now, look at Miami QB roster. Parcell’s is a great motivator, but when it comes to picking “groceries” I think he is average at best. And don’t talk to me about the 4 first rounders he got for the Jets, even Bradway couldn’t screw that up. Suffice it to say, I don’t think he is a good talent evaluator, but he is a great coach and motivator so long as he can bring in “his guys”.

  20. avatar SackDance99 says:

BubbyB-I guess you are forgetting about Drew Bledsoe? And, with the Giants, Parcells had a pretty good back up–Jeff Hostetler. Ask the Jills what they thought of Hoss. Look, with the Jets it was an unbelievable mistake not to have an adequate to Vinny…but, I’m not sure that detracts from Parcells’ central philosophy: you build an NFL team up the middle. On offense: Mawae, C-Mart, Vinny. That was a pretty good line up, no?

RK, I think the record of veterans on new teams is actually pretty good. Guys like McNair, Garcia, Gannon, Flutie, Bledsoe, Montana, etc. did well on new teams as the starter, especially the first season. Contrary to your theory, it’s usually the second season and beyond when the veteran starts to decline.

We all revered Vinny T despite his INTs and age. Favre is just a better QB than Vinny T and he’s coming off of a great season. As for the cap implications, cutting Chad will save cap room and Tannenbaum is the NFL’s top capologist. I have no doubt that Favre could be signed to a cap friendly contract. The only real doubt is whether the Jets will be in the hunt for Favre.

  21. avatar Najy says:

    BubbyBrister/shovelpass

Do you think Dallas is really good right now because of Wade Phillips ???????

There is a reason why they had about 10 pro bowlers last year from that team and his first name is Bill.

  22. Sack,

I agree with alot of what you wrote, but when you wrote ”Parcells, recognizing that O’Donnell, Foley, etc, weren’t going to get it done at QB, quickly in year 2 got Vinny. ” – that is unequivocally false.

Parcells did not get Vinny because he knew that Foley couldn’t get it done. Going into 98, Foley was the starter and Vinny only played when Foley got hurt. I am not questioning that Vinny was way better than Foley, but they got him because Parcells grew to hate O’Donnell (as he later grew to hate Foley) and they needed a backup. He even brought Foley back for game 5 of that season after his injury healed before finally settling on Vinny. Parcells old line about both being the cook and the one who buys the groceries was never borne out by what happened in reality when he went shopping.

All that being said, I certainly see why Parcells would want Farve in Miami and if we got him here (I really doubt it unless Tanny can pull off another deal of the century, which doesn’t seem likely), I’d be happy to root for him. I have some doubts about how much better he’d really make us, but it would be interesting and I really don’t think he’d make us any worse.

  23. avatar E says:

As much as I would like to have Favre on the Jets it would be a win now worry later situation and I would think Mangini wants to establish at least one quarterback who can be the winner for the team and plus the cap space would kill us after that spending spree and giving up a draft pick would not be in the Jets best interest even if they do have a great season.

  24. avatar SackDance99 says:

NYC Parking Expert, we disagree about Vinny T. He had played for 3 seasons, including a playoff season, for Belichick in Cleveland and, as soon as he was signed, anyone who knew anything about Parcells, including me, predicted Vinny would start. It was inevitable; Foley just wasn’t a Parcells guy. So, unless you have proof that Parcells obtained Vinny T without ever envisioning him as a starter, I just don’t see how you could state that my statement was “unequivocally false.” In fact, the very signing of Vinny T was a tacit admission that the Parcells brain trust did not trust Foley as the starter. And, as you state, Foley never regained his starting position, which would not have lasted anyhow.

  25. avatar Brandon "You're With Me"riweather says:

    pat d –

the key difference between the jets and the fins is that the jets’ young qb is at a point in his career where he can be legitimately evaluated as a starter. the fins’ young qb’s are not.

you can’t just say “let Kellen be buried on the depth chart by Favre. If he is any good he will rise to the top” because favre isn’t coming here for a qb competition. if he became a jet, he’d be the no questions asked starter – and it delays the opportunity to evaluate KC for 1, maybe 2 years, when his contract expires.

then, the jets would have to decide whether or not to resign him based on an insufficient evaluation period.

  26. avatar BubbyBrister/shovelpass says:

Najy- Look I’m not trying to turn this great site into a dallas blog, (yuk!) but the Cowboys were as good as they are because they are in year 6 of the rebuilding. The Jets are only in year 3. Watching Parcell’s pass on Steven Jackson and drop twice in the draft only to get Thomas jones’ little brother was a mistake. Parcell’s gets too cute sometimes because he reads his own press clippings, just like drafting Anthony Fasano when Dallas had a healthy Witten. And ten pro bowlers (Roy williams?????!!!) like New England found out doesn’t guarrantee you a Superbowl!
