Jets Sign Rookie CB Dwight Lowery

by Bassett on July 16th, 2008 at 7:30 pm

The Jets have annnounced the signing of CB Dwight Lowery, the team’s fourth-round pick from this past April’s draft pick to a multiyear deal.

Lowery (5-11, 201, San Jose State), was the 114th overall pick of the draft and started all 25 games at cornerback for San Jose State in his two years with the team, intercepting 13 passes for 147 yards and one touchdown. He added 315 yards and a touchdown on 24 punt returns, deflected 14 passes, recovered three fumbles and posted 92 tackles (53 solos). Before his time at San Jose State, he spent his first two seasons at Cabrillo Junior College.

Lowery was widely considered a top prospect after his spectacular junior season, but came back to earth after breaking his jaw in a 2007 spring scrimmage (and subsequently losing 10 pounds in the process while having his jaw wired shut for seven weeks). His play his senior season wasn’t as electric and Lowery struggled with his 40 times during the draft evaluation process.

Even so, Lowery is a defender who has a sense for the ball, as evidenced by his high interception totals in college. At the NFL his speed will be tested, but he’s a value pick with potential where the Jets drafted him in the fourth round that could prove to be a moldable contributor over the next few years.

My opinion he and Miller will be splitting time this year at the second corner slot. If Miller doesnt show he can hold down the spot by himself this year he will probably be traded in a package next year hopefully and not released by the team. I figure that if Lowery gains some aggressiveness at the line he will make up for his lack of speed and already he has the ball instincts and the intelligence Mangini loves.

Surprising though but the last two players that we have seen (Rhodes 25 on the Jets, and Revis 25 in college have been great in the nfl.) Lets hope that Lowery continues the trend.

This was a great value pick. Derick Straight in the 3rd was a reach but this is a perfect spot, like we need to point out the difference between herm/bradaway and tanginni.

I don’t remember D Straight being a reach in the 3rd. I remember everyone saying he was awesome value. I think he was a early 2nd round prospect who slipped. But whatever he never panned out

I would have to believe that this kid can play. Aside from the Anthony Schlegel pick I would have to say that Tannebaum has made nothing but solid picks. Only time will tell but I gotta believe in this teams drafting strategy.

Strait never had Lowery’s numbers in college but he’s nowhere as near schlegal in terms of bust.
