2007-08 Jetsies: Rookie of the Year

by Bassett on July 17th, 2008 at 12:00 pm

Thank you to everyone who voted for TJB’s first annual Jetsies Awards, where you get to choose your favorites from the previous season.  Over the course of the next week, we will be revealing to you who won what.

jettrophy.JPGFrom looking at your votes for Rookie of the Year I can tell what matters to Jets fans: performance.  Either get it done or don’t, make the tackle or miss, fill the void or float along.  With that in mind, you the fans have spoken and your pick for Rookie of the Year for the Jets was, David Harris.

Harris was in the right spot to contribute right off the bat.  There was a rising buzz about him as he headed towards the draft.  The Jets and Patriots had both sent out vibes that they liked the young player, but it was a fateful meeting in the restroom between Mike Tannenbaum and Bryan Cox on draft day that sealed the deal.  After drafting Darrelle Revis, Cox told Tannenbaum “now don’t forget about David Harris.”

There was some apprehension and dismay by fans when Jonathan Vilma was injured and David Harris was set to start calling the signals.  Harris didn’t disappoint though, totalling 41 total tackles in his first two games as a starter and ending the season with 126 tackles, 5 sacks and 2 forced fumbles.

Even in the offseason, Harris helped to convince Calvin Pace to come to New York, taking a ride with him in Woody’s chopper to see the new facilities.  Rumor was that Harris almost threw up during the ride, but managed to hold his lunch down.

The future is bright for David Harris and the rest of the young core of Jets defenders.  Hopefully the only other dizzying experiences for Harris will be from rising to the top of the league as one of the best linebackers.

Can’t wait to watch Harris over a full season especially now that we got Jenkins! Can you say Pro-Bowl!

Hah, I liked looking at the comments on the posted link from january to Harris’ success after the season. bloggers projecting the success of a Harris-Vilma combo for ’08…who knew.

Also, I dont know how many people feel the same way, but being a Notre Dame fan (my HS also had blue & gold) I would love to see those Titan jersey’s more often next season, even though i got a slim chance of that. still proud of the green and white though just to clarify.

I love Haris dont get me wrong but Revis had a bigger impact. They guy went up against the NFL top WRs a lot. Almost every publication gushes over Revis. Harris had those two moster games then OC went ” whoa , who the F is this guy and we need to scheme around him” He was solid the rest of the way and I love the guy but Revis really distinguished himself more

  4. avatar Mehl56 says:

Yes Vinny, Revis had a great rookie campaign and you are entitlrd to your opinion but not only are we talking about the numbers Harris put up in a short season but he was involved in the game alot more-remember he made the defensive calls along with Rhodes and he put up these numbers without a true nose gaurd. Yes Revis was on an island at times and did well but Harris is a true leader.

ironicly a true NT may cause Harris to have less tackles as they play simply ends beofre it gets to him or he can get there. Like I said, i love Harris , but i think Revis is on his way to shut down coner back, who gives great run support. I dont think a plyer should be penalized becasue hes good enough to make the O go away from him.

All I know is tha if this years first two picks play as well as last years wehre in for a treat

I have to agree woth vinny. I’m pretty surprised that Harris one especially considering that Revis started from day one, and gave up, I think was said, only 2 TDs all year. Plus the INTs I mean…well I guess it’s better to disagree over who is better than who is worse but it seems well in Revis’ favor from my standpoint. I think LB is just a more glamorous position until you have a bad CB then it’s glaring what a weakness like that can do to a team.

    Ummm…Harris won not one.

im glad we have both these guys on our team…revis no doubt will be a great player for us…but harris won this hands down…think about it…if harris was even concidered for NFL defesive rookie of the year honors playing in only 8 games…and losing to patric willis who played in 16 games and had similar #s to harris…the biggest defference between harris and willis was tackles…so tell yourselves…what kind of #s would harris have put up in 16 games last year…for 1 thing…he would definitly have won the NFL defensive rookie of the year…and he did more than revis did in those 8 games he played in…just my thoughts…

They’re both great and we’re lucky to have either, let alone both. Revis may indeed prove to be the better players (hopefully one of the best CBs in the league) and was great last year, but Harris? Wow. Unbelievable productivity and more sacks than in his entire college career (mostly on reads rather than designed blitzes).

In any case, Harris wins the Jetsy as punishment for Revis’ holdout.

  10. avatar Reprocity says:

Bent… The holdout penalty… just beautiful!

  11. avatar AL says:

Both Revis and Harris were great. I voted for revis but it was really close in my mind. I hope next year we can argue over Gholston or Keller.
