PSLs Cause Uproar

by Bassett on July 20th, 2008 at 7:52 am

The Jets decision to charge their fanbase PSLs has gone over like a fart in an elevator so far.  Although no real word has gone out, the decision has been clear for some time, especially with the Giants announcing their plans and leaving the Jets to look foolish by not having their s*** together in concert with Big Blue.  Also, factor in that the Giants are coming off a SuperBowl win and the Jets … well let’s not dwell on that.

Here’s the best comments I could find on the Jets site from fans about this news as officially noted by the Langer on his blog, Randy’s Radar.  Leave your comments on the NYJ site and be heard, just make sure to use your best  I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE!!!! quote :)

“Put another way, the Giants have clearly communicated their plan for PSL to their season ticket holders, and the JETS have no new infornation to report. ” — David

“Where is Leon and Wellington? This wouldn’t be happening if they were arround. Also do we have to buy PSL’s when they build another stadium in 40 years?   Get ready for a stadium of suits.” — MIKE

“Why wouldn’t there be a joint announcement? Shouldn’t both plans be the same since it’s one stadium and both teams are paying the same amount for it? The survey that was sent out to Jets season ticket holders indicated that the Jets fans would be paying more. Let’s see, the Giants have won 3 Super Bowls and been in 4 of them on the past 22 years and the Jets have won NOTHING!! Who should pay more!” — John

“PSLs are an insult to every long-term middle-class Jets fan. The good old “bring your son and family to the game”-times are now officially over. I have a little hint for the organization: If you can’t afford a new stadium – don’t build a new stadium. That’s how we normal people do it. ” — Manu

“How can you have a PSL for a stadium that is shared, other stadiums the PSL gives you first oppurtunities at concerts and other events. Do I have to sit on the lap of the giant fan???????” — Craig

“A day late and a dollar short. Don’t want to be 2nd class citizens but yet the Giants have been giving information to the fans in a timely basis and we just sit back and do nothing. Kind of like last year – Giants win the Super Bowl and we get 4-12 . If Woody doesn’t structure the team PSL exactly like the Giants or BETTER than he has no cares for his fans. ” — ap
“Let’s see if Woody still walks around shaking fan’s hands after he announces his PSL structure. Build a team not a stadium.

“I think its great. We had to have a new stadium, just had to. The Meadowlands is 30 years old. Its so outdated. Its not modern enough to steal every dollar from the season ticket holder. Its wonderful to read about the game experience the Jet fan will have in 2010. I can’t wait to see it with my own 2 eyes. Randy stop drinking the cool aid the jets are givin you.” — James Gabriele

“It is heartbreaking that as a result of the proposed PSL’s my siblings and I will be giving up seats that have been in our family since the days of the NY Titans. These were my father’s seats and my children and nieces and nephews are third generation Jet fans. Unfortunately they will end up in the hands of the wealthy and leave the loyal and faithful locked out of the stadium. Shame on you!!!” — Leslie Simpson

“Maybe I should sell my seats to the highest bidder as long as they r a fan of the visiting team. I know New England fans would love to get seats like mine to see their team in NJ. Afterall the Jets may as well get used to playing without a home field advantage now because they will be doing it starting in 2010.” — Long Island Fan

“YOU KNEW IT WAS COMING.I WAS HOPEING THE JETS WOULD HAVE A HEART MEANING (WOODY) AND SAY NO IM NOT GOING TO CHARGE THESE FANS WHO HAVE BEEN WITH US THROUGH THICK AND THIN! THANKS FOR NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ” — JOHNJET12

I, too, am not particularly happy about PSLs. But, I’m also realistic. You are asking the Jets to ignore $400,000,000 in revenue stream.

That’s 400 million dollars. (Average $5,000/ PSL). That’s not money NYC teams are going to ignore.

I think its a little unfair to paint the jets as an organization that doesn’t have their act together, with regards to this whole PSL issue. Sure they haven’t always made the best decisions, but under this new regime, the jets have always been very well prepared and organized.

isn’t it just as plausible that the jets and giants are announcing their plans at different times because the jets are charging less than the giants? I can’t see how the jets can try to charge the same, or more, considering the giants had an amazing season last year that ended in a championship.

1965…my Dad got season tics…2010…I get the shaft. I’m selling my rights to a New England fan. There’s no loyalty from the Jets to me for over 40 years of my support, so there will be no loayalty from me. I also lost my NJ Devils season tics for the same reason. So now, let the revolution begin!!!

The Jets are waiting to release their plan to give the illusion that they are taking the fans’ comments from that stupid survey into consideration. I’ve had tickets way upstairs since ’95. I’ll pay the thousand each for two tickets but that’s all I can possibly do. As long as they sell out, the games will be on TV.

Really? The same season ticket holders who cheered when Chad got injured in the first game last year are talking about how the Jets will have no home field advantage when the new stadium opens up….

The teams built the new stadium without public financing. If they built it with public financing, your taxes would have gone up and you would have paid for the stadium anyway. Basically, the Jets’ share of the new stadium construction is $800 million. The net income the Jets earn in a season (ticket sales minus salaries minus upkeep and taxes) is not enough to cover the interest expense on the $800 million of debt. That means that without public financing or PSL’s, the Jets would be losing money.

The PSL’s would allow the Jets to reduce its debt by about $300 million to a total of $500 million. $500 million of debt is much more reasonable and the Jets would actually be able to pay its interest expense. We have to realize that the banks would not have loaned the money unless the Jets were committed to charging PSL’s. Once it became apparent the public financing was not an option, the Jets had two choices. 1) In order to get a loan, it had to charge PSL’s, or 2) continue playing in one of the worst stadiums in the NFL. I think building a new stadium is a lot better choice than staying in the old one for another 30 years.

Also, it truly is amazing that someone would give up season tickets because of the PSL. If you can’t afford the lower seats, move upstairs and pay $1000. You can finance it (over 2 years I believe) so your actual monthly total will be something like $30 per month. It is hilarious that someone can actually claim to not have enough money to pay an extra $30 per month when she or he gladly pays a couple grand for the actual tickets each year, plus gas and parking for every drive to the stadium. I’ve been on the waiting list for 7 years now. I would be ecstatic to have the right to pay $30 per month to see my team play every game.

In case you think that the cost of the stadium is outrageous, please realize that the cost of steel and many other raw materials have gone up 400% in the past 2 years.

And, no I don’t work for the team or in any sports capacity. I’m just a guy who can think rationally.

What I don’t understand is the hatred for Woody. Mr. Hess may have been a great guy, but he ran the Jets into the ground. His FO’s decisions were horrible and he relegated the Jets to second-class citizenship and no home field advantage when he moved the Jets to the Meadowlands in 1984.

Now, let’s discuss that move. Many loyal Jets fans in 1984 decided not to buy Jets season tickets for Giants Stadium. Some did it because of the longer drive, some because the thought of the Jets playing in Giants Stadium was a sin against the Jets’ AFL roots. So, who bought up all those season tickets? IMO, Giants fans and ticket brokers bought a boat-load of those tickets. That’s why when I went to the Steelers game last year, we were out-numbered by Steeler fans. So, I’m hoping that lots of those Giants fans and ticket brokers decide to let their tickets go, so real Jets fans can buy into the stadium.

Also, why is everyone praising the Giants for coming out with their PSL plan first? And, why is everyone saying that the fan survey was a fraud? There’s a good chance that the Jets’ PSLs will be less than the Giants’ or that long-time season ticket holders will get a discount on the PSLs. Remember, the Maras need the money; they’re not independently wealthy.

So, yeah, as a 17-18 (I don’t remember) year season ticket holder, I’m not wild about PSLs. But, I am psyched that the Jets won’t be playing in “Giants Stadium” anymore and I may get a chance to get better seats. And, I suspect that many of you are belly-aching now, but will pony up the money for the PSLs.

And, any of you that think that the Jets won’t sell out 100% are delusional. Yes, compared to the Giants, the waiting list is shorter, but the Jets have the 11th longest waiting list in the NFL with approximately 11,000 loyal fans. The Jets have been 100% sold out since 1979 and the current wait off the waiting list is 10-15 years. In fact, because the new stadium is bigger, I bet a lot of folks on the waiting list are psyched about the move and PSLs. The Jets will sell out.

SackDance99 — I don’t think it’s a hatred of Woody Johnson so much as contempt for him because he is a non-football guy who was content to let Herm stay even longer than Herm did — From that he is perceived as having way too much influence on football decisions for someone who knows very little about football –

Ok rational guy. Tell me what is wrong with the Meadowlands?

    Please.

This is a horrorshow of a move. Unwarranted on all fronts.

Rumor has it that the Jets PSL will be double that of the Giants

  14. avatar Brian says:

Unfortunately, these PSL fees seem inevitable. But for those like me, who have held season tickets for over 20 years and have recently retired and/or lost jobs, why not let us pay it off over 4 years?

  15. avatar sec135 says:

Alright, I’m downstairs and hearing I may have to pay up to $9,750 per seat as a PSL. It’s crazy, but I’m thinking it through:
Supposedly I can turn around and sell the licenses at any point, even possibly turn a profit someday, right?

But my question is this: of the few fans even capable of paying me >$20K for the right to have my two seats, (let’s say I move or go broke in a few years) how many are going to actually shell out that money? Consider that those fat cats can also just go to ebay/stubhub/craigslist, etc… and buy a pair to virtually any game for about $100 over face (seriously, it’s rarely that much extra). So that guy would have to spend about $800 more per season than the season ticket holder. Big deal right? Well it’ll take almost THIRTEEN YEARS for the guy who shells out $10K for his PSL to make his money back!!!! And that’s if you really think you’re going to make it to every single game!
As a season ticket holder I only catch about five per year because of other obligations, so it could take me the rest of my adult life to ever justify the insane fee.

Anyone have a take on this? I’m open to buying the PSLs, but am I missing something here?!
