Opinion: Favre Flavored Rant & Audience Pandering

After this post, I am putting a moratorium on Favre to the Jets talk so get it out in this thread … cathartically release all your pent-up Favrian tension … after that … consider this TJB a Favre-Free zone.
There’s been a lot of talk about whether or not Brett Favre should or should not be a part of the Jets plans. How surprised would you be to find out that Gary Myers thinks it’s a good idea? Me neither. Rumor is that he sat in his stuffy apartment drinking orange juice for a week when the team didn’t draft Matt Leinart.
Would Favre make the team better? Absolutely. Are there risks to taking Favre on for a short tenure with the team? Hells and yes.
Now word comes that golden throated radio king Mike Francessa has “sauces” that are telling him that there were internal discussions on Favre, which Bob Mantz notes he wrote on Bleacher Report, here.
Wow, brilliant work Mike! The Jets are having internal discussions? That’s earth shattering news. You mean the same Jets team that in the last year has had a roster including:
- Two Olympic wrestling hopefuls
- A Power Forward from the Virginia Commonwealth Cinderella team
- A Mexican Wide Receiver with the best name ever … JUAN WONG.
That the team who has left no stone unturned to find roleplayerswould then talk about someone as high-profile as Favre internally is not surprising in the least. What would be surprising is if they hadn’t considered him at all. The Sox and Yankees have been rumored to have had talks about Barry Bonds, but as far as I know, haven’t done anything about it. So whether the Jets had internal discussions is irrelevant. What remains to be seen is whether or not the team has been in contact with the Packers.
So Mike, please use all your powers of journalism as the bigest radio host in the biggest sports city in the nation to try and see if you can get us some information on that … until such time, leave me alone with your ratings tease nonsense.
Sombrero slant to Bob Mantz Jr. of Bleacher Report for contacting us about this.

Are we required to post on this? I thought the issue was already beaten and exhausted.
Hey, at least it’s a substitute for the KC v. CP debate.
yay! thank you for that zen! the lack of comments and yours has restored my faith in jets fans!!!
Hey Bassett, I hear the Jets are having internal discussions on signing Vernon Gholston? Any truth to this earth shattering breaking news?
What a way to spend the last day before the season starts.
The Jets would be the dream trading partner for the Pack. Everyone knows this. The real question, and we will get not reliable information unless a deal happens, is whether Mangini, Tannenbaum and Woody have been seriously discussing making a pitch for Favre. I guess I’m in the minority, but say a 3rd rounder for Favre to replace Chad for 2 seasons is a no-brainer. The contract issues can be worked out, Tannenbaum is an expert capologist. We just can’t really evaluate what it would be like to have a QB of Favre’s calibre under center. IMO, it would be a revelation, like when McNeil first started to rush behind that great late 70s/ early-80s OL and we saw what a good RB could for the Jets. But, QB is a more important position and Favre isn’t just a good QB; he’s a legend, with plenty left in the tank (last season he set career highs in completion pct. (66.5%) and yards per attempt (7.8)). If the Jets’ FO cares about us, the fans, then please right an historical wrong and let Brett end his career with the Jets.
So what do you all think it would take for us to get Favre? A first-rounder? Second-rounder? A third rounder seems to low for Favre, even if it seems like the Packers don’t want him back. Trading Barker and a draft pick might also work since they have a bit of a hole at TE. I know they just drafted a TE in the 3rd round, but we all know it usually takes a year or two for receivers to make an impact. Anyways, what do you think we should give up?
hey bassett mike and others think pennington could walk on and be instant starter for the vikes and possibly be the missing piece for a run at the bowl, but on our team he dosnt have what it takes to even make the playoffs i think this is crazy we have just as good if not better team. I hope clemens starts but i wont be that disappointed if pennington starts either were not even close to being the same team as lst yr
Again, if we can get him, we should. Even with him missing the offseason program, I think he would be WAY better than what we have. I’d take him even on a one year contract. Let KC learn from one of the best, and do what we should have done with Chad this offseason–trade him, and if no team wants him, cut him. Harsh, yes, and I really do like the man. But his injuries have left his arm a wet noddle.
Randy Moss, on the short list of the greatest WRs of all time was traded, while still in the prime of his career, for a 4th round pick. Who knows what the Pack will take, but their options are limited (they’re desparate to get Favre out of the NFC and there are only a few AFC teams where Favre would fit…a team without an established QB). I think that a 3rd rounder is a possibility, maybe with a sweetener, but I think the Jets would have all the negotiating leverage.
Didn’t know Mike F ever even talks about the Jets!?
Sack, Tannenbaum IS a cap expert and if instructed he WILL work it out…but one way or another, giving Favre 13m that they clearly haven’t budgeted for in their long term plans is going to mean 13m less is available at some point in the future. Sure, we could shed contracts left and right (weakening the roster), get guys to restructure (which, as we’ve seen can hurt us in future contract negotiations) and stuff like that to squeeze under the cap this year with Favre, but I think you are underestimating the long term cost.
I don’t think you can simply dismiss the financial side of things by saying MT will work it out.
I agree with the football logic, but financially I think you are underestimating things drastically.
Barret cap number is like 4.5 mill… cut him! Farve for a 3rd and then Pennington to the Vikes for a 2nd! Farve and making a 3rd into a 2nd! Sign me up for that!
Sack, You cant compare the headache Moss was to Bret Farve. Though the value does seem to match up. One amazing stat about Moss is that he was on both the Number 1# scoring offence and #2 of all time!
Brett Favre?!! Didn’t he retire!! (sic)
I doubt the FO is having internal discussions concerning a player who is the property of another team…that would be half-way to tampering…(wink, wink).
Please, for the love of all things green & white, make Favre go away from our stream of conscienceness like that Vick guy did.
You mean Favre might be available? Let me just get out from under this rock and I’ll check this out
Bent, who says that Favre will want $13 million to play? Maybe he gets a big bonus, the Jets spread out his contract, etc. Also, in 2 years Favre, Coles, Jones, Faneca, Ellis, Barton, Thomas and Woody could all be gone. That’s a lot of freed up cap room. So, I’m not saying that you’re wrong, but as that great economist John Maynard Keynes once said: “In the long run, we’re all dead.” Getting Favre would be all about a 2-year run to try to win the Super Bowl, now; just like your beloved Celtics did with getting Garnett (Favre) and Ray Allen (Faneca).
Reprocity, Favre in Green Bay is the mother of all headaches. Moss was a chewable, baby aspirin headache to the Raiders compared to Favre for Green Bay. Favre IS the Green Bay Packers and if he wants to play, how can he be denied? It’s such an awful PR nightmare that I’m sure the entire Green Bay FO is having cold sweats about this. They are dying for a decent offer to get their problem out of the NFC and Midwest. This isn’t like Pete Kendall or Chris Baker; it’s a google-plex times worse for the Pack.
Sack, you wrote “…but say a 3rd rounder for Favre to replace Chad for 2 seasons is a no-brainer.” How are you so sure that Favre will play 2 years? The guy has been threatening to quit since Kellen Clemens was in High School. It would be the same circus here next offseason as it is every year in GB. Plus, Favre “the legend” of last year looked like Favre “the has been” 2 years ago. It’s not worth the financial risk or the risk to team chemistry.
It was telling to me that in the other post in which questioned were asked to Jets players, Cotch answered “I wouldn’t do that, we don’t need him” to the question of whether or not the team should get Farve.
NYC Parking Expert, I agree that the risk with Favre would be convincing him to play a minimum of 2 years, but he has to know that any team that trades for him would want that commitment. Plus, I think a lot of his unhappiness was with the Pack’s FO which he thought was not doing anything to make the Pack better. A change of scenery, especially to New York, could rejuvenate him. Every superior athlete wants to go out on top and wants the biggest stage, NY gives Favre a platform that he’s never had before. Plus, could you imagine if the Jets won the Super Bowl with Favre at QB? Favre would reach a different level of stardom and his career would be viewed much differently. No QB has won Super Bowls with two different teams. He would go from being considered one of the best to the best QB of all-time. I’m willing to bet that Favre would love that challenge.
He was a “has-been” 2 years ago? No, 3 years ago he was a “has-been” because his team stunk and he had the only losing season of his HOF career. Two seasons ago, he was the only difference between a 4 win and an 8 win team. Also, what is Cotch supposed to say? That the team needs Favre? Chemistry? Favre has been universally regarded as a great teammate. I think Pace, Jenkins, Faneca, Thomas Jones, Keller and Gholston would all like the fact that nobody will be looking at them, the spotlight will be on Favre. Like I’ve said before, Keller could be All-Pro with Favre at QB; it could be like Namath to Caster in 1972 all over again. Favre is such an exponential upgrade at QB that unless the Pack’s trade demands are outrageous, the Jets FO should do everything to get him. I hate saying “same old Jets” but missing out on Favre twice would be reason no. 1,000 why this team is always on the outside looking in.
If we could pull off a trade for Favre we should do it. I think a third round pick and maybe Baker would be fair. However, Favre would have to drop his salary to around $4-5 million.
The guy can still flat out play. I would cut or trade Chad, and let KC and Ainge learn from a HoF QB, then after two years one of them could take over.
I can’t help but think how much fun it would be to have Favre slinging the ball around the Meadowlands.
According to the NFL Network Green Bay has spoken to 20 teams about Favre.
Sack, I wasn’t prepared for you to start quoting Keynes at me!
OK. So here’s where I’m at…is the Jets defense and the rest of the team good enough that adding Favre puts them in a position where they can win the Superbowl. I say no…not right now.
If the Jets defense and the rest of the team gets better could it be good enough that a Chad or a Kellen or a next year’s number one pick could get them there in a few years. I say maybe…but not if we can’t afford to keep upgrading because we are paying big money that wasn’t budgeted for to a QB and then dead money to a retired QB.
Now, if he decides he will play for less, then I agree 100% that changes everything…but I can’t see that happening.
As for the Celtics, they added two guys to a starting five that already included a perennial allstar in Pierce. They play 40 minutes each a game, so that’s literally 50% of your team in minutes terms. It wasn’t hard for them to put the rest of the team together cheaply with what they had already by adding a few role players. Even if Favre and Faneca transform the offense, they can’t represent as much as 50% of the team, so the rest of your team will be weaker than average if you overspend on the QB position. Adding two guys to a 12 man basketball (active) roster has a far greater impact than doing the same on a 45 man football roster.
Sack, There is a big difference between a player who wants to come back and a player who says he plays when he wants to play. One player is negative while the other is just a delicate situation. With Moss it was personal and the Pack and Farve are just trying to work things out the best they can. I wouldn’t mind one bit as what to do with a HOF QB type of head ache! We just have to deal with disgruntle TE’s :)
let’s just limit any future brett favre posts to deathpool predictions
Looks like Juan Wong has been overtaken for best name ever…

Bent, Faneca replaced the weakest link on the OL and Favre would replace the biggest overall weakness on the team at QB. Both are HOF level players replacing what were glaring negative weaknesses. I think it’s impossible to quantify what kind of an exponential impact such an upgrade would have; that’s where my Celtic analogy comes in. Because QB is the most important position in pro sports and because Favre is a HOF QB, the upgrade would have a Garnett-like influence on the Jets. It’s not just that you convert a weakness to a strength, you put in the key position one of the best ever to play the position.
As for the defense, is the Jets defense now worse than the Pack’s last season? I think if you went position by position, you would conclude that the Jets’ defense is superior, so with Favre at QB, the Jets could easily make a deep playoff run because a good offense makes the defense even better, especially if the Jets get to play with a double-digit lead and the other team’s offense has to move away from the run.
Reprocity, we will agree to disagree. If Favre decides to comeback, he’ll be in revenge “I told you so” mode and will be the “good” Favre, who is a team leader and inspiration for, at least, 2 years, which is all I want from him. If you don’t want to see and hear the announcement of Brett Favre as the Jets starting QB at around 4:05 pm at the Meadowlands on Sept. 14 and then watch no. 4 come out in a retro Titans blue and gold jersey as the crowd goes bonkers and he high 5s and head butts his other offensive starters, then I guess I really can’t explain much to you. I’ll tell you this much, I don’t think Tom Brady, Belicheat and that weak Pats secondary on the visitor’s sideline will be thinking that the Jets made a bonehead move.
I’ll never agree with the Celtics analogy, but hey if the result was the same I wouldn’t complain.
No way the Jets defense is better than the Pack’s though. They had ATARI BIGBY.
Had it, July 15th
