Pennington Confirms Tannenbaum’s Interest

Pennington confirmed what we already know … not that Tannenbaum would tell us, this according to the AP:

Jets quarterback Chad Pennington said Friday that general manager Mike Tannenbaum told him the team has talked to the Packers about Favre.

It didn’t sound like Tannenbaum assured Pennington that the Jets aren’t interested.

“Bottom line, an organization has to take a look at every player available in this league. Period,” Pennington said. “A general manager and a head coach is going to do everything they can do to make their team as good as they can make it. That’s their job.”

Tannenbaum was on WFAN this evening, and didn’t deny anything, but refused to make public statements about the situation.

We know that Tannenbaum would look into it — it’s what he does — but don’t assume because he’s interested that it means they’ll pull the trigger.  The Jets considered moving up in the draft for Chris Long in 2008 and Reggie Bush in 2006, but they obviously didn’t pull the trigger on those deals.

  1. somehow i think he gonna be a jet this season, then retire after one year

  2. all i know is that something has to be done by monday…either yes or no..because this is a distraction right now

  3. I want someone to show me how Fabres QB stat % are better than Pennington’s and how he will make our team better in the future?

  4. i think we should forget about favre for one specific reason: locker room morale.

after coming off of such a poor performance last year, i was impressed how the jets management effectively seemed to address so many areas of concern in one offseason. however, i dont personally think it’s very constructive to “feed the fire of criticism” that the media (and some fans) seem to love concerning our qb situation. even the notion that we have an interest in favre should bring up one question immediately: what confidence does tangini have in either cp or kc? i am personally a diehard cp fan but i love the jets even more and will suppport cp or kc depending on preseason performance. but what if you were cp or kc? wouldnt this not only affect your own confidence but their confidence in the support of their team? the team management went out and significantly re-vamped both sides of the ball, which should have huge impacts on offense performance. the obvious: faneca/woody/richardson/keller will improve not only blocking but force other teams to re-adjust to how they approach us. not only is the o-line better, but with that comes more opportunity for cp to utilize PA plays, a more threatening rush, and allow our receivers to actually make it down the field for a deep pass. plus, just a few more sec’s allows cp to use his intelligence to make good plays, something both he and kellen had none off last year. our defense should also improve significantly, meaning they’ll get off the field and stop creating desperate situations early in the game. but to create a distraction like this 2 days into training camp is ridiculous. we acquired all these players to give cp/kc a chance to succeed. lets give them that chance

(sidenote: this is my first post on this site and i’d just like to say that this site is awesome. it’s nice to see discussion about this team that goes farther than the crap i get down here in va. GO JETS!!!)

  5. While I’m against the move, lets get it over with. Not fair to CP or KC…
This is not what we need now. Farve is all about Farve.
We go 8-8 and he is gone next year. Retires as a Packer and we start over again.

  6. vajet:
Welcome aboard! I think you are right on with this Favre thing. I also agree this is rediculous! Specially when we are talking about mortgaging our future for what?

  7. I would have agreed with this move 5-10 years ago, but not now when he is 38. He is clearly past his prime and his play will only deteriorate. Plus I think the Jets would have to clear some cap space in order to get him, thus trading either KC, who has limited value right now, or Chad, who has probably a little more value than KC. Stick with what you have, if they both blow that much this year, then you go out and either draft/trade/sign a better QB next year who is not close to 40.

  8. Of course as always the time to win is now. We have for certain made major strides forward this off season both in the draft and in free agency.

The missing piece is a QB that can get the job done. Chad and KC can not do that. Many of the FA acquisitions are past prime and have one or two good seasons left.

Look, Sack Dance says it better then me. Any jet fan that doesn’t think Bret gives us a better shot then our current bland mediocrity is either blind, foolish or smoking crack.

Sign him to 2 seasons, give up a number 2 and Baker…trade CP to Minnesota for a number 4…and lets get it on.

  9. I am more excited with the camp performance of Dustin Keller, Kris Jenkins, Chansi Stuckey, Brad Smith, Thomas Jones, Leon Washington and Chad Pennington, yes CP, than all this talk about Favre.
If it is going to happen let it happen..but I would hate to give anything more than a second rounder.
    Vajet welcome!

  10. How are many of the Jets FA acquisitions are past there prime? Pace is fairly young( 27) last time I checked, yeah Faneca is a little older(31) but he is def. in his prime, Woody is only 30, and only one who may be past his prime is Richardson.(37) We do dont know what Green Bay is asking for Favre, do any of you really think he is worth a 1st rounder obviously not, I wouldnt even trade a 2nd for him.

  11. One more thing here. The opening of camp is a great time for optimistic hope filled dreams for a great season. Every year at this time I get giddy about our chances.

This year even before the talk of Farve, I felt that we had positioned ourselves to be a solid and much improved football team. That management had made bold decisions and addressed many areas of concern to all of us.

BF is a certain HOF QB. He is a colorful, emotional and sometimes erratic QB. He is a top 5 all time QB no matter what standard of judgement one applies.

In my view he is a difference maker and someone that will force DC to game plan us far differently then with CP or KC. He can make BB in NE lose sleep.

We have a much better team, but one missing that spark that changes a team from 8/8 to 12/4…OK a bit optimistic…but true.

It would be electric, exciting, gut wrenching and beyond words to have BF a our QB.

  12. Lets put it this way guys….I don’t care who we have…if we ain’t got a QB we are not going to the promised land.

Chad has a wet noodle arm, and KC has problems hitting the broad side of a barn.

We have a real OL, and 2 very good RB, and a real nose tackle, and a pass rusher….and by the way Coles and Crotch are better then the guys BF threw to last year…and we have a new tight end that looks like a very good slot receive, and will give DC fits.

You same guys will be the first to cry out if Chad or KC mess up and reduce down significantly our chances to win….you know cripple the effort by being mediocre at best.

So tell me what is a world class QB worth….If Bret takes us far into the playoffs as opposed to 8/8 what is that worth to us as fans?

  13. Fonzie,

You’re kidding me right? Show you how Favre’s stats are better? How about last year, 4100 yds. 28/15 TD to Int. ratio. NFC championship game. CP has never had a season like that. Favre holds every meaningful passing record.

Favre coming to the Jets makes us instant AFC contenders. Tell me you don’t want that.

  14. If the packers insist on a #1 pick, they will end up with favre on their roster and paying him $13 million for being a back up. It would seem to me that they would go out of their way to get him off their payroll and out of the nfc. Asking for a first round pick isn’t the way to accomplish this. Give them baker and a #4 or higher.

  15. It seems the Cards are shopping Anquan Boldin, Bubba and a 1st maybe… whats your take.

  16. I meant Baker and a 1st

  17. ramble914:
You need to go back and re-read my comments. Pennington out shines Favre in just about all carrer PERCENTAGES (%) as a QB. What we are getting now (today) if we mortgage our future ala Edwards, is a Pennington clone but much older with no assurance of anything.

  18. Favre to the Jets would be a lot of fun for a 3nd rounder or less.

Come on…a hall of fame QB and we don’t want him?

He almost beat the Giants. He’s got one or two years left in the tank.

The Jets are a perfect place for Favre to drop from a Packers perspective. Forget about Tampa and the Vikes.

All depends on the contract though.

  19. The new o-line will make serious holes for pennington to run through. We always talk about his arm strength, but we forget that he is a true, pure-bred running back. I see him making 2100 yards rushing this season, easy.

  20. Forget about Favre because of locker room morale. Oh yeah I forgot, having a QB competition to see who will start is a great morale booster. The best teams all know who there QB is going to be. Sign Favre already.

And no one is going to morgage the future for Favre. Even a first round pick is not morgaging the future considering something like 40% of first rounders are busts.

Jetchick has it right. All the FA moves we made were to win now.

  21. Favre will be in green and white.

It is the only place he can take a pay cut and still make more money. The ad money will roll in.His face will be every where.

A win win. For Favre, for the NFL, and for the Jets.

For all the Jets fans that don’t want to see this happen I think subconciously you want the Jets to lose so you can fullfill your need for self pity.

  22. pat d: by your reasoning, I had a great idea. Let’s just go hire Tom Brady. Don’t stop there. Ransom every guy that’s been there for more than an offseason and use the money to replace them.

Get a grip, for God’s sake. I want the Jets to win. Not Favre. It’d be like me stepping in to give your wife her first orgasm… Is that really going to help your marriage in the long run?

  23. Yeah that makes sense, cause some of us don’t want Favre, we want the Jets to lose, and I pity myself. Favre did not exactly light it up at home against the Giants in the playoffs last year and almost dont count. Tangini would be insane to give up a 1st for Favre. The Jets will be better off with a QB who controls the game rather than a gunslinger who will throw 20 INT’s this year and put more pressure on the DEF. The FA moves were to win every year not just now.

  24. Any one whom thinks bret favre is not an upgrade…hello…He will be a Jet by Monday..We have only had one gr8 QB ever..Bring Favre get a speedy receiver in here to go besides coles and cotchery and favre hiting bubba in the endzone once again…

  25. Comparing Chad to Bret is like comparing a VW to a Porsche

What future are you guys talking about mortgaging? The future starts opening day, and we have for over forty years mortgaged our future and come up short.

I like the immediate future with a QB that will be in the HOF first ballot, and who had a great season just last year.

You cry baby management type company line guys are dim.

The time is now, and Bret is the guy.

Can’t help but wonder what Joe Willie would think about BF becoming a Jet!

Funny thing is all you Chad and KC supporters will be the first to jump ship when they stink up the joint.

  26. Pennington, as much as I have enjoyed is passion for being a Jet, needs to be dealt to Minnesota. The Vikes would surely discuss a trade if it involves a 2nd or 3rd because Chad instantley makes them contenders in the NFC. Again, the Jets need to deal Chad to Minnesota if they are discussing a trade for Favre.

  27. I hope we get Favre too. I like Chad a lot, but it is mostly because of his attitude and professionalism. Unfortunately, I don’t think his arm will ever be able to take us deep into the playoffs. As for KC, he can still sit back and larn for 2 years and he will stil be young when it’s his time. Plus, Ainge may be our guy in two years. I don’t get some of you say we would be mortaging our future. Say we trade a 2nd and 5th rounder for Favre. Most likely we get a 4th back from somewhere for Pennington. SO giving up a 2nd rounder to upgrade at QB is not really mortaging our future. Even better if we can send Baker and a 3 or 4. Plus, we have had QB’s who manage the game for years now and look where it gets us.

  28. The Packers don’t want him back and they want a 1st rounder for a 38 year old QB..come on man thats insanity of the highest order ,not counting the fact he’s not coming for minimum wage here is he? Mike T is doing his due diligence on this because thats his JOB. Packers called ..you listen and make the decision thats in the best interest of the NY Jets.

  29. greg the keg — Even Herm won’t give more than a #5 for Chad — No way the Vikings give up a #2 or a #3 –

  30. Fonzie,

Maybe there’s another Chad Pennington I am not aware of. Pennington and Favre are clones? Yea, they’re identical with the exception that Favre can throw 40yd bullets, and Chad can throw 10yd bullets. They are identical in there careers and accomplishments too.

If you are hanging your hat on their similar completion %, what good is that. What has Chad’s high career compl. % ever gotten him? He is a dink and dunk QB. We need a vertical passing game.

  31. Everyone in the league knows Goodell wants the Favre situation resolved quickly so there is not a chance in hell GB gets a 1st round pick. They’ll be very lucky to get a second. Assuming Favre would do an incentive-laden, cap-friendly deal with the understanding the fertile NY media market offers additional financial opportunities, it would be hard not to swap him for Pennington, perhaps in a three-way with Minny that sends CP to the Vikes and their ‘09 second rounder to GB.

Chad’s done a lot of good things for the Jets but he’s 32, injury-riddled and definitely not the long-range solution at this point. If you are going to play somebody that is not the future, while searching for the QB of tomorrow, would you rather it be a *nice* player who’s *almost* gotten it done over the course of his surgery-plagued career or a hall of famer, who took his team to within an OT field goal of the Superbowl six months ago?

Sure, it would be tough for him to learn a new system and Favre would throw a lot of picks, but he’d throw a lot of TD’s, also. With the defensive improvements it’s worth the risk. And, for all his faults, the guy is certainly charismatic, fires up his teammates and would send a nice blast of chutzpa through the stale Jet air.

  32. Oh how I hope we get Favre. It will buy us time to draft a QB for the future. In the meantime we trade Chad try Kellen as a backup and waive Ainge. Then we draft a QB next year in the draft. The Jets are heading in the right direction.
    GO JETS

  33. James,

Too bad you are in Tenn. and not able to see Jet practices. I’ve seen two already, and I have to tell you, Ainge looks pretty good. He already seems to have a pretty good understanding of the offense. He seems to be able to make all the NFL throws, he can use touch, or he can zip the ball 30-40 yds. down field. If KC isn’t careful, Ainge might be the QB of the future.

  34. If GB wanted to give away Favre they would just release him. A 3rd, 4th..not going to happen Jet fans. Trades for Pennington, etc, would be a steal of criminal proportions. Get real. Favre means def coord. have to defend the ‘entire’ field. That is the unique element that Favre brings. He makes the running game better instantly because safeties can’t slide up to defend the run. LB’s have to drop back instead of coming forward. The Jet offense changes dramatically with Favre, but it won’t come cheap. If the Jets don’t step up, the Vikings would give up at least a #1 if GB wants to put Favre in the same division. Favre won’t come cheap, and as has been said, less than 1/2 of #1’s end up contributing anyway.
