Buzz: Jets Were Called, Not Calling

Although the Jets did ask for permission to speak with Favre, that wasn’t something that the Jets did as a result of contacting Ted Thompson in Green Bay, actually, it sounds like it was the other way around.   Jane McManus sums it up well on her blog.

Tannenbaum’s piece of information that the Jets were call-ee rather than caller—which he did not reiterate for reporters—adds to the confusion of who wants who.

Right now the rumor mill is in full force, and depending on the source you can find reports that Favre isn’t interested in the Jets, that no team is interested in Favre and that Favre will or won’t play for the Packers this Sunday when camp opens.

It doesn’t mean that the Jets aren’t interested, but if I were you, I wouldn’t hold your breath until it happens either.  As more information has come out, it starts to seem like other situations when Tannenbaum has been involved in potentially groundbreaking moves.  I’m tempted to think of the time when the Saints called Tannenbaum about moving around from #4 to #2 in the 2006 Draft and Tannenbaum’s question back to the Saints was “what are you going to give me if I do?”

Tannenbaum deals from whatever his perceived strength is , and he’s not going to do something or be pushed into doing a deal that’s bad.  That said, he always talks about making the team better at every position, so he needs to weigh wheher this deal makes the team better, and whether the cost it would take is worth it.

  1. If the Packers called and gave the Jets permission to talk with Favre without the Jets ever asking for it then that’s significant — If the Packers called the Jets to gauge the Jets’ interest in Favre and in that conversation the Jets’ asked for and received permission to talk with Favre then nothing has changed –

  2. If we can afford to do it and it only costs a 2nd rounder than I feel we have to do it. Whether you like Favre or not, your delusional if you think he isn’t an upgrade over any of the Qb’s we have on the tean right now.

  3. Favre is a non-issue, thank you Lord !!!

  4. As much as I want Favre to be our QB this season, I’ve decided not to hold my breath waiting for it. There is too much that has to get resolved for it happen any time soon.

Favre hasn’t even submitted his re-instatement papers yet. The Packers will never just release him, but they are not going to pay him $13 milion/yr to be a backup either. GB will not allow him to play in the NFC North, and would probably prefer he not play in the NFC at all. That limits the teams he can go to.

GB is rumored to want a 1st round pick, which is preposterous, Favre himsef would have to agree to at least a 50% pay cut.

If this happens, it won’t be until the 3rd or 4th preseason game, and by then it will be too late for him to start the first game.

  5. Forget Favre, it’s too late already – camp has started and he doesn’t know a thing about our playbook or players. People get so enamored with his name and that he’s a legend, but he’s a 38 year old legend who is way past his prime. He is marginally better than what we have now. Pennington’s Jets beat the crap out of Favre’s packers the last few times they played, which only means that the legend is only as good as the team around him.

What kind of guy would go back and forth so many times about retiring/un-retiring anyway? What is wrong with this guy? I thought QBs were supposed to be good decision-makers? He has a great career in GB and then does all this nonsense and may finish his career elsewhere? All he had to do was to commit to playing after the season ended and he’d be the starter in GB. Seems like he never got enough attention as a child and is doing everything he can to keep himself in the spotlight. Again, forget Favre.

  6. NYC, Wow. I think you are right… Pass that coolade over here!

  7. Hah, nothing like some green coolaid at the start of training camp.

Seriously, why are so many people so enamored of a guy who had 1 good season (last year) after about 4 mediocre ones?

  8. Reprocity:
Way to go man !! You are 100% right. Plus he is an old Chad clone with less brains that would cost us mucho dinero ($), draft pick(s) and hurt our fragile team chemistry. It’s just not worth it . Do you hear that Jetchick?

  9. I see our window as this: Next years draft, Top QB, 2nd Best Tackle, 2nd best guard, ILB, OL,OL, OL’s brothers

Year after is ours! Leon starting with TJ back up, Cotchery #1, Coles situational, Keller, Other WR’s?, Mangold, Moore, Ghol, Revis, Rhodes, Elam and Miller (Potential.) Others I’m projecting: Mosley, Stuckey, Pouha.

    Farve screws this up!

  10. NYC:
I hope you made enough green coolaid to go arround. Some of the comments I’ve reading desperately need it . Some fans are ready to bail out on CP KC for someone that their own family (Packers) don’t even want. I’m sure it is NOT that they feel they have a pro-bowl QB in Rodgers.

  11. This is Bassett editing this comment. I am leaving this for now, but it sure reminds me of a former poster who was banned for being a jackass and who used the exact same phrase “5 guys say the same …” and it seems an odd coincidence. You’re not exactly starting off on a good foot.

Maybe if people agree about things, there’s something to that. A lot of people disagree about a lot of things, and if you are so concerned about democracy and not having the same voice, then start your own blog. Otherwise, please feel free to go to the many message boards devoted to the jets around the web.

I’m new here…but it seems like the same 5 guys say the same 5 things on every thread. Then they all pat themselves on the back about their self proclaimed wisdom.

Fonzie….go back on happy days will you please. If your summation of Farve is that he is an old Chad with no brains you have to be delusional.. BF is a HOF QB and considered by many to be among the top 3 to ever play the game. Chad is a nice fellow with a high IQ and a wet noodle arm that gets injured every season.

Upgrading to farve would be like trading in a Ford for a Ferrari….and this Ferrari has the durability of a tank.

You anti BF guys will of course be the first to scream for Chads head when he throws those wounded bird passes that get picked, or cause brain damage to our receivers.

    Please get a clue

  12. JetChick, Welcome. I’m prob one of those five but it’s more of debate. Redundant messages are bound to happen but there are a lot of blogs and threads here so I wouldnt get to caught up in it. The more bloggers the BETTER!!!

I’m not anti BF. I admire the hell out of him. I just dont think the price will be right. Would you give up a first?

  13. Repro,

I would love to have Favre on our team this year, but only for the right price and time.

I would not give a 1st round pick, and I’d be hard pressed to give a 2nd.

Favre would have to cut his salary by at least 50%, and give us a two year committment.

And this would all have to get done by the end of this week (8/1).

Like I said above, I’m not holding my breath.

  14. jetchick:
I’ve got news for you…..THESE ARE HAPPY DAYS !!
If you can get past his HOF status and look at not only last year but the previous three years you will see an old CP with less brains that demands to be taken back when his own team told him to STAY AWAY! Personally I feel the guy is a head case and would disrupt our team.
