Film Room: SalPal Reports Pack Wants 1st Rounder
Posted on July 26th, 2008 by Bassett
SalPal reports that the Packers are wanting a first round pick for Favre. If the Bucs aren’t all that interested (which is what it seems like) the Packers might find themselves hard pressed with no competition and a player they need to activate to get the Jets to agree to a first round pick.

Why in the world would the Jets even consider giving up a 1st rounder for a 38 year old Favre??? If they do that, then it’s time for a new FO,
I can’t wait for this to go away.
i’d give up a 2 — its not like the jets have gotten much value from their 1 and 2 draft picks — ever
well i would give a 2 and 5 but surely not a 1 he might be bret favre and come on hes got the madden curse on his back
The Jets won’t, nor will anyone else, give up a 1st rounder for Favre. But if he came cheaply, with a contract that made sense? You’d have to at least kick the tires. Pennington is a short-term solution who, based on past history, is a coin flip to get injured and miss significant playing time in any given year. Sad but true. Favre is also a short-term solution but an iron man SB winner who came within 3 points of going again last year. If KC, or any other QB on the roster showed they were a little bit of polish and playing time away from stardom I wouldn’t do it. But is anyone really confident that ’s the case? There are good reasons not to do it but better ones to pull the trigger if the price is right.
2nd rounders turn out to be good solid players. If Tampa is out, I would not offer them more than a 3rd and a 4th. With the hope that we can recapture one of the two picks by trading Chad to the Vikings or any other team. It is not like the Packers have much of a leverage.
I’d rather go down in flames with KC than be a wild card with Pennington soley for the purpose of next years draft. I would keep Pennington if Clemens fails this year and let a rookie sit behind him next year for a season a la McNair. Clemens should be the one going or staying not Pennington.
There something Missing in the whole bring in Farve and trade Pennington bit. If you were GB would you trade your QB to a team that is going to trade their QB to one of your Rivals that will make them a legit contender? Lose Farve and Help the Vikes? Not a smart move to me. Any takers?
I think a 2 sounds reasonable. Especially when you consider they used a 2 to draft Mike Nugent.
Even if Favre plays only a couple of seasons, the Jets will have a better opportunity to immediately utilize the older offensive players like Faneca, Jones and Richardson. A great o-line, RB and FB won’t turn Chad and Clemens into good QBs (see Minnesota Vikings and Tavaris Jackson).
Look at it this way… Favre was one of the best in the league last year. Clemens and Chad couldn’t have even started for most teams in the league last year. So who give the Jets the best chance to compete in 2008?
Some Jets fans do noy get it. The problem with Chad is not his quartebacking, his quarterbacking is one of the best in the league. The problem is that he injury prone, so that either he plays hurt or he does not play.
Those who talk about noodle arm and that he is not a good NFL QB should try harder to elevate their football knowledge and understanding; because they sound imature and stupid.
The “First Round” asking price is just a suggestion. Jets wouldn’t even consider. Look for the price to drop as other teams lose interest and public relations nightmare gains momentum.
I wouldn’t give up a 2nd. Jets have traded up from that positionto land guys like David Harris and Dustin Keller.
The idea is to rent Farve for a couple of years, keeping us both competive and entertaining while we rebuild… not to throw away our first and second rounders for a win now mentality.
I wouldn’t mind watching Farve lead the Jets for a couple years, but not at the price of losing youth, speed, tallent for many years to come.
“Those who talk about noodle arm and that he is not a good NFL QB should try harder to elevate their football knowledge and understanding; because they sound imature and stupid”
You don’t think Chad has a noodle arm? Every CB in the league does, that’s why they always jump on his weak passes. I hate to say it but that’s the truth.
Penny doesn’t scare anyone deep either. Coles gets his head taken off in the middle waiting for those ducks to land.
I hate to say it but it’s true.
Butch if every QB knows that Chad has a noodle arm how come this guy has the highest percentage of completions in the NFL and his yds/pass is as good as Favre’s who has a cannon for an arm? And playing almost half of his carrer games injured?
If Chad plays injury free he is one of the best 4-5 QBs in this league.
whoever trades for him should give up nothing more than a conditional third rounder based on performance and length of playing time.
I wouldn’t give up a 2nd either and it probably won’t be be necessary. No one in the GB or NFL office wants to see Favre stirring it up at camp in GB. I think CP to Minny, Minny 3rd rounder to GB would probably make sense for all concerned.
And, no, I’m not concerned GB will balk at helping Minny by allowing them to get Pennington. I’m sure they respect Chad’s skills to a degree but with his medical history and recent stats it’s not like they’re getting vintage ‘89 Montana.
Nikolas,
You’re talking about the pre-multiple shoulder injury Chad stats.
At one time his arm was solid. Those days are over.
I hope that has changed, but last season didn’t indicate that.
Butch, he came back, he took us to the playoffs and he won the comeback player award.
Last season was all the FAULT of the FO, when they started messing up with the OL. I had predicted this time last year, that if Kendall was traded our QBs would be running for their lives.
Quess what! In the first game Chad gets ligament damage in his ankle, he starts playing injured and then he is replaced bu a young Clemens who happens to run for his life too.
Many Jets fans take last season as a benchmark for measuring our QBs and this is not just unfair it is simply not smart.
Give me a healthy Chad and take a 38 year old Favre. The only thing I am not sure is if Chad can stay healthy and that is why I would not mind seeing Favre instead of Chad for a couple of years, if ofcourse and only if the price is right.
Anything over a 4th round pick is a disgrace
What is “AA” talking about not getting good value for our round 1 and round 2 picks. Maybe you havent been paying attention to what Tangini & Co have been able to do the past couple years. No way would I give up a 1st rounder nor would I give up 2 picks un less its a 5th and a 6th and even then would be iffy about it. Brett Farve go away!
Wouldn’t give up higher than a 5th rounder. But I don’t really want Favre on the Jets.
No way in hell Tangini trades a 1st rounder for Favre, the Packers asking price might be a way for Favre to reconsider retiring again. Can’t wait for this story to be over and Favre lands anywhere else except here.
3rd and a 6th
I have indeed been paying attention to what Tangini have been able to do — it’s called “4 and 12″. As a legitimate NFL head coach (who happens to also be the last good coach of the Jets) once said “you are what your record says you are” — so what Tangini has been able to do is put together a pathetic underachieving team with one of the worst offenses I have ever seen and no real impact players (hence no pro bowlers). Tangini and the Jets franchise are a bunch of scared little girls who cannot get out of their own way.
2nd and a 5th, with a $6mil contract and I’d pull the trigger. Cut Chad for the cap space or cut some dead wood–we have $6mil worth, easy.
Butch is right. Brett would be a HUGE upgrade, even at 38.
The packers’ evaluation with regard to Favre reveals that he is not a HUGE upgrade as some may think. The Packers were 3 points away from the superbowl and they decided that Favre was the weak link. If they have thought otherwise they would have tried to adress other needs. Actually Green Bay thinks that Rogers is an UPGRADE over a 38 year old Favre.
If he is not good for Green Bay why is it good for us to pay a 2nd and a 5th to have him?
Nikolas – you seem passionate, but your perception of pennington’s current skills and abilities are clearly clouded by the fact that he’s a good guy who we all want to root for… unfortunately, he ain’t got it… he’s certainly nowhere close to “top 4-5″ qb’s in the league.
While the o-line was awful last year, chad’s decision making and lack of arm strength in several non-pressure situations were just abominable//
do you not remember him throwing away the giants game – twice? do you not remember the almost weekly – quick out pattern intercepted and returned for a TD b/c the CB’s could jump his throws?
i applaud your loyalty to chad and agree that when healthy he can do some things, but nothing like you are suggesting..
a 3rd or 4th rounder for favre is fine.. but let’s just remember how many picks he has…
at the end of the day, if you can get one of the greatest qb’s ever coming off a strong season for a decent draft pick you do it..
Nikolas–
Farve gave up on Green Bay, not the other way around. He retired after the season and for the second time in as many years, he changed his mind and wants to play again. The Packers were prepared for Farve’s departure with Rodgers. Favre’s will he or won’t he retire saga has been goign on for the last 3 seasons and I think the GB Front office just said enough is enough, now move on. It’s not a statement of Favre’s playability, but more to do with not having that cloud over the franchise again next year.
That being said, I am still torn on bringing Favre to NY. I think it will cost too much for too little in return, especially if the Packers want a #1. Favre will want a pricey contract and I think we’re only going to get 2 years out of the contract, maybe less. Does anyone remember Neil O’Donnell? How did that work out for us??
Dan Leberfeld on Sirius NFL Radio today recounted info shared with him from a major network rep at Jets camp: the network reportedly was holding all their reporters at camp til 5pm because they anticipated a major announcement that Favre had signed with the Jets. When that didn’t happen the rep insisted that a deal was in the works. According to Dan he seemed very ‘convincing’. No mention of details of any deal.
Jets already have there Brett, Ratliff. I wouldn’t be surprised if this guy gets thrown into the mix, strong arm and throws to the right jersey. Before some make stupid comments about this assessment, 1. watch him in practice first and 2. i could name a half dozen QB’s who have come out of nowhere the past several years, Garrard comes to mind first. Why not give him a chance when you already know what you have in wet noodle armed Chad, and have somewhat of an idea with KC. Not saying he is a savior, but deserves a look at the very least.
Some Facts:
1. SjFalcon2001 According to Favre’s interview at the NFL network the GB Mangement forced him into retirement. So it is GB management that gave up on Farvre and not the other way around.
2. sec111. It is also your perception of Chad’s diminishing skils. At least I am talking by using the numbers which by the way do not support your perceptive argument. If there is an argument against Chad is that he is injury prone and you cannot rely on him playing hurt or missing games. And his numbers are the result of playing half his games hurt or injured and in the worst field in football, the Giants stadium.
3. To the “wet noodles” the new class of unitelligent Jets fans, good luck
I mean if anything it would be a conditional 4th rounder or 5th. You cant give high draft picks for players that will only play for 1 maybe 2yrs at best!!
GB has little leverage here. They can’t have Favre making camp a circus. There are few teams interested. They will take less not to have to face Favre this year and have the fans screaming at them if he beats them
No reason to give up more than a 4th.
Why does Sal report this garbage? I could tell you I want 1mil for my beat up Hyundai. Who cares if there is no demand?
EB: You’re overly optimistic. Favre already retired once. What makes you think he’ll play “a couple of seasons.” More likely, he wants one more season. He won one Super Bowl in 12 years with the Packers. He’s NOT going to come to New York and win a championship in one year in a new offense. The Jets will waste a draft pick and they still won’t know if Clemens is their QB. When they seek that answer in 2009, it’ll be without Chad Pennington as a fall back.
