First Rounder? Not Bloody Likely!

by Bassett on July 28th, 2008 at 2:40 pm

Jay Glazer of FoxSports has updated “the situation,” and talks turkey on what the likely compensation would be.

The trade is not for a first-round pick, as had been reported, nor for a first-round pick plus other compensation, as is now the latest word on the rumor mill. The Packers, several sources have told FOXSports.com, have based their compensation upon an escalating scale that could go as high as a first-rounder based upon certain performance benchmarks Favre would have to hit.

However, negotiations on the compensation is far from firm as the parties involved are still in serious talks regarding what it would take to make this move. The Packers do not have a firm asking price, as they are trying to trade their formerly beloved player.

So hypothetically if Favre throws for 4,000 or takes the team to the SuperBowl, that’s when they’d get a first … something to that effect.

Glazer also notes that Favre haven’t talked to the Jets, but his agent has.  That Tannenbaum and Mangini haven’t put out the fire is intriguing, but at this point the Jets don’t seem to be Favre’s preferred landing place, but he’s also blind enough to think he can end up in Minnesota.

That’s are great incentive clause, if Favre takes a team to the SB, GB gets a first round pick. If we get to the SB with Favre as our QB, I would gladly pay the first round pick, hands down!

  2. avatar nelson17 says:

That makes it more likely that the Jets can make this happen there is no way the Jets would give them a 1st straight up, so it looks like Jets, Bucs or bust for Mr. Brett Favre, so whats it gonna be?

  3. avatar Blazed42 says:

i dont see favre taking us the the SB. stick with pennington if he can stay health he will take us to the playoffs with the players hes got around him now. groom ainge to the be the qb of the future. im starting to think clemens isnt going to pan out

  4. avatar sec108 says:

OK, I’m not so much worried about the compensation, I know that Tannenbaum and Mangini respect the value of draft choices and would work out a fair deal if it came down to it, but from what I’ve seen and read so far Favre’s first (and only) choice is to play for Minnesota.

Thats worrisome if your a jets fan. Not only has this guy vascillated on whether or not to continue playing the last few years, but he isn’t even luke warm on the idea of coming to play for our team even though we would appear to be the best option?

Count me out, I know he would be a major upgrade (after he learned the system and the players), but I don’t want to be “winner” in the “favre sweepstakes” simply because he had no other choice.

It looks to me now like the Favre camp is using the Bucs and Jets “interest” to pretend there is a market to try and drum up more interest, nothing more. Him choosing the jets now would be akin to being the last kid picked for dodgeball.

Like it or not it seems like it will be Chad or KC (and/or?) bust at this point.

  5. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

i think our team is his best choice,he come here and win he will be legendary in ny..

  6. avatar nyckage says:

i doubt its gonna happen and if he does come it will all be about favre not the jets bout favre

  7. avatar Bent says:

I expect the Jets have a lower value in mind and if they opportunity presented itself, would do the deal at that price, otherwise walk away.

Sackdance said it best before this process even began. He said something like “it would be remiss of Tangini not to at least look into the possibility of trading for Favre”. Well, they’ve done their homework now, but based on every move they’ve made and not made (ie Bush) so far, they will probably balk if the compensation or the salary are too high. Even if they aren’t, it sounds like anything but a certainty that Favre would come here.

Of course, Garnett initially wouldn’t go to Boston at first either…(but I’ve decided now that this trade is more like the one the Celtics decided not to make – for Allen Iverson – instead waiting until they could better assess their needs, had enhanced the value of their tradeable assets and found a move that fitted better).

  8. avatar TOON2388 says:

I have been against this move all along. But I would give up a 1st round pick if we WIN the Super Bowl. Who cares about just making it?

  9. avatar LanceMehl says:

Can someone please explain to me how we fit his 3 year $39M salary into the cap? Is there a rule I don’t know about if he’s reinstated?

who cares what pick it would cost us? – I want someone to write how we could make the money actually work?

  10. avatar SackDance99 says:

Bent, problem is that now I’m not satisfied; I want Favre. If Mangini/Tannenbaum were willing to pay Woody $25 million for 5 years, then there has to be a cap friendly way to make Favre a Jet. Favre compared to Iverson?!? Ouch! I’m going with the Garnett comparison until some other team gets Favre. Then, I’ll be on the Iverson comparison bandwagon.

  11. avatar Bent says:

Basically, he would need to renegotiate down, LM. Some posters here have said they think this is possible because of all the extra endorsements he could get in NYC. I’m not so sure.

  12. avatar SackDance99 says:

LanceMehl, his contract is torn up, extended and front-loaded with bonus money. The bonus money is spread over many years, while his initial salary is low and cap friendly. The real bad cap hits come in the last couple of years, when his salary would be astronomical, but he’d be cut or retired by then.

  13. avatar Bent says:

Fair enough – shame he obviously won’t be going to Denver. Minnesota would be a tad ironic, huh?

I guess when they paid that much to Woody, they had no expectation that an opportunity such as this would arise.

Financially, as I said before, I reckon 5m instead of 13m could be done without making any real sacrifices. Anything above that and you start to eat into money that would be earmarked for improving the other parts of the team.

Who knows what he’ll want? He has a lot of pride, of course.

  14. avatar SackDance99 says:

Bent, I do not believe that the Player’s Union allows traded players to technically sign for less money, so the contracts are renegotiated and extended for more money, even if the extra money is a fiction because Favre would be long gone.

  15. avatar Bent says:

I prefer my way. No danger of salary cap hell in a few years time with dead money preventing us from resigning Mangold, or Harris, or Leon etc.

Of course, some would say that there’s also no danger of the Jets ever being any good under my scenario either, but that’s a matter of opinion.

  16. avatar SackDance99 says:

Bent, any idea what getting rid of Chad and Barrett would save this year? Also, there could be other cost-saving tricks up Tannenbaum’s sleeve.

  17. avatar Bent says:

Well, yes strictly speaking, but you’d be using my numbers with (as you say) one or two “fictional” years at the end. He’d still have to accept the lower amount of money overall to make it work.

Two conversations going on at once here. This must be hella confusing to read!

  18. avatar SackDance99 says:

Bent, I’m just wondering about your time horizon because in 2-3 years there are lots of vets that could be gone, including high-salary guys like Coles, Ellis, Bryan Thomas and Thomas Jones (among others). Do I have to quote Keynes, again? :-)

  19. avatar Bent says:

    Chad = 2m
    Barrett = 3m

That’s where I came up with the figure of 5m meaning that we sacrifice nothing.

The other main saving option is Barton, but he is indispensable IMO, despite the calls to move Pace, BT or VG inside. He’d save another 3, I think.

Losing Chad also saves about 9 next year, so maybe an (effective) 2 year 14m deal would be “swallowable” too.

  20. avatar LanceMehl says:

Thanks to everyone for finally explaining it to me but have to agree w/Bent ..somehow I doubt he’d take something in the $4-5M range .. even if it’s extended – which I think is a very poor business move

Funny – would GB take Chad’s contract back in return?

  21. avatar Bent says:

And of course there’s the possible uncapped year. It’s an inexact science, but I am a fan of the slow build (which by the way I supported relentlessly for my celtics in the face of mainstream and local ridicule).

All those vets will need to be replaced somehow unless we get lucky and the Devito’s, Kareem Brown’s, Will Montgomery’s and Jason Pociask’s of this team step up.

  22. avatar oscarfactor says:

OK, now this Favre “talk” is starting to become a huge distraction to both of the guys who will QB the Jets this year.

Way to botch things, Front Office.

Favre = old. overrated. interception. machine.

  23. avatar billvv says:

There has to be some trade off if he wants to play that badly. I’m guessing the FO is trying to gauge that number.

While I know that the Jets would be covered in glory if Favre signs, I hope the FO won’t sell our future for what might or might not be a “win now.”

  24. avatar SackDance99 says:

The other thing about the contract issue is that I would tend to doubt that Tampa Bay has any more money to give to Favre. Ditto Vikes. No team would have a spare $13 million of cap space, without a significant injury occurring to a high-priced veteran in training camp.

If the Favre talk is distracting, wait until the Ainge talk heats up because I will guarantee that Ainge will light up a 4th string defense in one of the first 2 pre-season games. That’s the state of our top 2 QBs, they will end up being challenged (in the press and on this blog) by either Ainge or Brett, untested late-round picks. Of course, Favre would be the best choice.

Favre = ironman. winner. touchdown. machine.

  25. avatar Nikolas says:

The problems with acquiring Favre are several, but the most important to me is that Favre can be physicaly present but absent in mind and heart. The exact opposite of Chad.
But hey, there are PSLs to be sold!!!! And news Material for the NY press and tv medial!!!
In other words no good reasons for football.
Now Brett taking to the SB? This is funny!!!

  26. avatar SackDance99 says:

Favre is the all-time leader among QB’s in wins and just fell 3 points shy of the Super Bowl after having one of his best 5 seasons (career highs in completion pct. and yards per attempt). I think someone who has shown that he will do anything to be on the field, has also shown that he knows what to do once he’s on it. That being said, who doesn’t like Chad’s attitude? If he had Favre’s howitzer arm, we’d have a couple more Lombardi Trophies to see at Hofstra.

  27. avatar jetfan4life says:

I wouldn’t agree to any sliding scale. GB has no leverage here. Don’t cave in to any potentially high asking price.

  28. avatar JoeMustGo says:

Don’t bother sending in plays from the sideline if we sign Favre. He’s either going to audible out or make something up on the fly.

  29. avatar AA says:

If Favre won a Super Bowl for the Jets, I would give GB a first round pick….. AND second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh round picks — in perpetuity!!! I would just shut down the franchise at that point and end it all on a high note. Favre would be a Namath-like legend and I could live happily ever after.

  30. avatar John says:

Maybe we can trade Chris Baker for Farve???

  31. avatar Johnny Styne says:

Bassett — So assuming the Jets do get Brett Favre, you’re saying that it’s “not bloody likely” that the Jets get to the Super Bowl? — That it’s “not bloody likely” that Favre has a second good year in a row? — That it’s “not bloody likely” that he keeps the opposing defenses honest with his vertical game and by doing so significantly opens up the Jets’ running game? — That it’s “not bloody likely” that Favre will not blink at the thought of walking into New England or San Diego or Indianapolis for a playoff game and then win that game? — Gotta disagree with you that all of those things happening is “not bloody likely” — We get Brett Favre then I put all of those things happening at 50/50 — Which is a far cry from “not bloody likely” –

  32. avatar Johnny Styne says:

SackDance99 — “We’d have a couple more Lombardi Trophies to see at Hofstra…” until they’re moved to New Jersey in five weeks –

  33. avatar BubbyBrister/shovelpass says:

sigh…the world according to Johnny Styne! It never ceases to amaze me!
