Mangini on Justin Miller

by Bassett on July 29th, 2008 at 1:49 pm

Asked today about Justin Miller’s progress and technique, Mangini used on instance to cite Miller’s improvement.

“I’ve definitely seen that growth … just in watching his feet just in press/man coverage and the discipline that he’s had with his footwork there … it’s huge. He’s a strong guy and he wants to sit in there and make those receivers deal with him. When your gift is strength, at the line of scrimmage you’ve got to force those guys to deal with you, but if your footwork isn’t right, you can’t do that cover and still transition on the field. He’s spent a lot of time on his footwork and I can see, each day, I can see the differnce.”

This is the year for Justin Miller, make or break. He’s matured, a year removed from being able to play and working for his next contract. You’d hope he can be the guy the team drafted him to be in 2005. I’m looking forward to seeing how the secondary sorts out this year.

Miller is a 2nd round pick. He has to pan out, if not ,that is another high value pick gone bust. But, I don’t see that happening. He comes from a good college program at Clemson, and he was highly regarded coming out. If not for the off-field issues he would have been a definite first rounder. So maybe we got lucky and received first round talent for a second round pick. Time will tell.

Well at least he has some value as a return man if nothing else. I also thought he played the nickel well 2 years back. But yea this is the year for him. Hopefully we found our #2 (fingers crossed)

If Justin Miller can be a solid corner opposite Revis, we will have a very strong secondary. I never like to be too optimistic but with an improved pass rush as well, we should have quite a few pics this year.

His strength definitely is his strength, sounds funny. Does anyone remember the play he made during his rookie year in bump and run coverage where he took down the receiver? I can’t remember the player or even the team they were playing but I’ve always been a fan of Justin since then.

INT’s are a beautiful thing, only 9 days till Jets @ Cleveland!

this guy was all about speed ..with that kind of injury I am in wait and see mode about Miller .. anything is better than Barrett ..

exactly…..barrett is TOI-LET. let miller earn the job, he has a chip on his shoulder now….always a good motivation.

  8. Seems that Miller’s big problem was always his brains. If he really has matured, let’s hope that his study habits have improved alot. I love the thing about the secondary watching film together. Should be a motivating factor and also a little bit of peer pressure to know your opponent.

Remember, Mangini was saying a lot of positive things about Miller before the injury last year. If he’s kept his speed through the rehab etc. then we might have something.

Good, because as recently as 11 months ago, Miller’s footwork was terrible.

Barrett? As I keep saying, can’t cover smaller, quicker guys to save his life, but can do a job against bigger guys that don’t have the same quickness off the line. Hopefully Miller can develop into someone that can cover both, so we can make a cap saving by cutting Barrett loose.

Hey Bent, thinking of that Wes Welker TD in the opener from last year?

    Oy.

I followed miller all through college, and as a jets fan i feel we got lucky to get him in the 2nd round..people forget in mock drafts in 2005 he was a top 20 pick.. and as others been sayin his strength at corner is rediculous.. he can hit, wrap tackle..and not to forget his speed if he gets his hands on a INT. he will be the number 2 corner come miami
