Transactions: Jets Waive P Joe Smith, Sign Two
With one roster spot already available after releasing Danny Woodhead, the Jets made another one available by releasing Punter Joe Smith.
To fill the spots, the Jets have re-signed (again) LB Jerry Mackey (6-1 233) a Freeport native who has been on and off the team many times since last August. In addition to Mackey, the Jets signed WR Rudy Burgess (5′10″, 186), an UDFA WR who was with the Colts until last week, then let go on Friday. Rudy Burgess who played collegiately at Arizona State, is one of only three active FBS players and one of only 14 FBS players all-time to top the 1,000-yard mark in rushing, receiving and return yardage. In his career, Burgess has 1,093 yards on the ground, 1,524 yards through the air and 1,600 return yards on both punts and kickoffs. He has scored 19 times as a Sun Devil, six rushing, 12 receiving and one return. During his time in college Burgess saw duty as a receiver, running back and corner. He also threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to Derek Hagan in 2005 against Washington State.

so #4 is available now that joe smith is gone… Is this a coincedence?
it would be insane to think we released somebody so that #4 would be available, that player would be forced to chage their #. btw, what is FBS?
That’s what they call division one college football these days, Ham.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence at all. Clearly they are bringing Louie Aguiar back.
I can easily see how a very good receiver could be let go by the Colts. Although, many critics may think that the Jets are weak at the receiving position, I do not agree. Coles and Cotchery are top quality starters. Chansi Stuckey will become a star, if he can stay healthy. Brad Smith has transitioned from QB to WR. Smith has so much natural ability that, the Jets have been using him for trick plays. They still might use him in those situations but, after watching him in practice, I have a feeling he will have a breakout year. He has good size and his accelleration after the catch is impressive. Add the new Tight End acquisitions of Franks and Keller and we have a serious receiving corp. Get excited, Get very excited!
WHAT? well its vey sad let me say because I have watched bothe punters twice up close and Smith definetly beat out graham like nobodys biz…….bad move on the Jets part
