Buzz: Is Favre Close to Becoming a Jet?
EEEE HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!
Like the cryptkeeper, it’s the story that just won’t die.
Apparently word from Green Bay is that
“The New York Jets are in serious talks with the Green Bay Packers and Brett Favre’s agent about acquiring the legendary quarterback, a source said today.
The Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the only teams that have permission to speak with Favre about a potential trade for now. Favre’s agent, Bus Cook, has been in talks with the Jets, who have shown a growing interest, but Cook has not been working closely with the Buccaneers, according to two sources.
Favre would have to sign off on any trade before a new team would be willing to give up compensation for him, because if he refuses to report to the new team’s camp, the trade would be voided. The extent of Cook’s talks with the Jets means Favre at least is considering playing for them.”
ProFootballTalk is reporting the same story, and they added this twist:
In fact, there’s actually a headline right now on the Press-Gazette web site reading, “All But Over: Favre to Go to Jets (It’s Over: Favre traded to Jets)” although there’s no story under that headline, and it has the appearance of something that was mistakenly put up by an overzealous web producer. (UPDATE: That headline has now been removed.)
Here’s my thoughts on the subject … after the jump.
- This could be a simple flushing out of their prey on the part of the Packers. If there are other teams who have been lurking, they might want to see who’s really interested. The more parties, the more compensation the Pack will get and they want to make sure they have best offers from everyone. When you consider the Jets choosing to not speak on the subject publicly, basically it’s the Packer’s word against a witness who won’t speak up.
- Conversely, if it’s just the Jets who are truly interested. Tannenbaum had better put the Pack to the screws on the compensation. Of course there’s a delicate PR aspect here trading a sure first ballot hall of famer, and Thompson doesn’t want to get fired but has to do something, so if the Jets are the only contenders, it could be delicate, which would indicate the time it’s taken to get this deal done. Although I liked the compensation on Jenkins trade this year, the other trades have been underwhelming in terms of what the Jets got for Robertson and Vilma, let’s see what Tannenbaum can do on this one.
- I’m optimistic in terms of what he could do for the offense, but I still don’t know that his addition instantly means winning the AFC East, let alone making it to the playoffs.
- What befuddles me, is that early reports were that Favraro didn’t want to play for the Jets, has he finally had a change of heart?
- Learning the offense is going to be a bitch for him, and one of the things not many people are talking about. If the Jets do make it a more run-heavy style, that will allow Favre a better learning curve should he join the team so late.
- The Jets should be releasing Chad Pennington shortly if this is actually happening. There’s no way to keep his salary, or make a guy who has been so team-first languish on this team … problem is he won’t get the the same pay he has with the Jets anywhere else, if released.
- Apparently Favre has cancelled his plans to go to Green Bay … which means something might in fact be close.
- All the same, I just don’t know that this will happen.

Do we have a QB? Please make it so.
Ughh this story needs to go away, sooner rather than later. Point #5 is huge Bassett, Favre doesnt seem like the intellectual type to pick up a new offense in 1 month.
Have to agree with that. Seems like the fact Favre will only have a month of offseason to pick up the offense is being glossed over. However, if we can get him for only a third or fourth rounder, we should make the trade.
right … he’s a guy who said during last season he was shocked that if he studied film and his playbook how much he learned …
ummm hello?!?!?!?
under no circumstances can the jets give up a first day pick. the packers MUST get rid of him before he reports to camp, and if they release him, he’ll surely sign with minny. offer a conditional 6th that can become a 5th based on performance.
This is officially an auction. The Packers organization are trying to drum up demand where there is none by trying to make their product seem more valuable. They do this by exaggerating the buyer’s interest. The organization’s motives are clear as day: they need to get this problem and distraction off their hands. The media loves this story so they keep the junkie hooked up. Remember how unwilling the Jets were when it came to trading Pennington around draft day? You think they’re going to just cut him to make room for Favre’s bloated salary? It’s not as clear-cut as the news writers like to make it seem.
hey bassett,
the homepage is producing that download/open with message for me.
I will be very disappointed if this comes to pass. It smacks of real desperation to me. If Penny and KC are that bad, stick with them, take your lumps and turn your valuable picks into a younger, better QB (draft or trade). With luck we might get something for DRobb or Vilma too.
In the alt.sports.pro.football Jets NG, one member predicted that if we get Favre, for all the problems noted (his recent performance has not been so great, his age, his not being a student of the game and will not learn lil Shotts O, new receivers, etc.) we will do poorly and be out draft picks. Meanwhile, Chad would have to be let go, might go to the Vikings and with Peterson and a studly D in a weak division might win a SB.
The irony of what we would do sans picks in the case would be too hard not to miss and I can just imagine all those mediaots who have been calling for this move explaining how they knew all along…
Harlan
This would be sweet. Favre would bring some serious passion!
Intellectual endeavors are for the 10% of the population that have the ability to create, understand and communicate those concepts.
Football IQ is intellect and Farve has that. Finding the open guy, reading the defense and getting the ball there accurately is what Farve can do.
I love you guys that just want Farve to go away…you are so flustered and ruffled by his name, and the possibility he might become a Jet…Why?
Give me a guy with the physical tools, and the lifelong track record of success over the almost Rhodes scholar with no arm that studies film any day. Our coaches would have Bret become a film student for certain anyway.
The three best QB’s I ever saw play the game were Elway, Montana and Farve. Farve will have a good surrounding cast and good coaches to work with.
Lets get him in camp ASAP to develop chemistry and lean the play book. Either lets make it happen now or forget about it.
If we can’t pull the trigger now then lets stop making this a forever distraction that will hurt this team.
Just do it.
I can’t believe no one has reported what I think is “the writing on the wall” for Pennington. This an ideal situation for the Jets to Trade Pennington to the Packers as part of the Favre deal. He is not a threat to Aaron Rogers to start, and he is a reliable veteran back up that they don’t have should he go down. Not to mention it would clear cap room for Favre to come to the Jets.
Brandon
A sixth round pick for Farve….what past or current criteria are you basing that on?
What would that make Chad worth…a used jock strap?
Harlan
Desperate? Maybe for a better QB, but not in selecting Farve….What ….did you guys miss the great season Farve had just last year?….Oh I forgot he lost in the championship game by 3 points.
The Giants had the best run to the SB I have ever seen…They also beat Brady.
“I love you guys that just want Farve to go away…you are so flustered and ruffled by his name, and the possibility he might become a Jet…Why?”
He’s a selfish prick, he’s a distraction that we need like a hole in the head, he would overshadow the team, he’d be doing everything on his own terms when Tangini has preached just the opposite.. We have a very good thing going here, an improved team without many egos or ‘look at me’ guys. Sure, let’s just add a giant one at starting freaking quarterback. The idea is so ridiculous, I can’t believe it’s even still being discussed.
It’s a good thing that no one’s talking about us and we supposedly should have low expectations. If Favre comes here, suddenly we’re the story, and anything less than a playoff berth will make us (again) a joke to the rest of the NFL media and fans.
I’m with Bassett, I don’t think Tangini would be that stupid, to go the complete opposite direction they’ve been going the past two years.
Please no.
Jet chick- HE lost the NFC championship game. Tynes kept handing the ball to the pack and Favre would choke. He isn’t the comeback kinda guy anymore. He is a bum. He will never watch film. It isn’t who he is and what part of what has transpired in Green Bay makes anyoen feel he would be a great team mate here?
That being said they are all bums and he could do some good for Clemens. If we give up a first day pick it will be a waste. I truly believe Madden will get him (His curse could be to play with the Jets tho)
Jetschick
“Intellectual endeavors are for the 10% of the population that have the ability to create, understand and communicate those concepts.”
- make a point or don’t make a point. this is just wasting important space on the inernet.
“I love you guys that just want Farve to go away…you are so flustered and ruffled by his name, and the possibility he might become a Jet…Why?”
- it’s tiresome hearing this crap day in and day out, and more than anything we just want the story to go away. it’s aggravating when it doesn’t. That said, i still don’t think that “flustered” is an appropriate description of any of these posts.
“Give me a guy with the physical tools, and the lifelong track record of success”
- yes, and please, give him to me when he’s 38 with diminished physical ability, too old and stupid to learn a new offense and has an inability to decide whether or not he wants to play anymore.
“….Our coaches would have Bret become a film student for certain anyway.”
- well that’s just stupid. if he’s never done it in his career, why would he start now?
jetschick,
i was basing the pick on the desperate, time sensitive situation the packers are in and the fact that favre, even if he was successful (which i think is 50/50 at best), is just as likely to retire AGAIN at the end of the season.
THEN, i look at the fact that Kris Jenkins was traded a 3rd rounder, Randy Moss was traded for a 4th rounder, Thomas Jones was traded for moving down in the 3rd round, steve mcnair was traded for a 4th rounder – all of whom are younger than favre and likely to play much longer and yield benefits for their teams over a longer period of time.
so what past or present criteria, may I ask, is your outrage based on?
* were younger
Someone please explain to me why we have to release Pennington if Favre comes here? Don’t we have at least 2 willing trade partners in Minnesota and Kansas City? Heck, you might even have a third with Tampa. Chad would be the best of what’s left on the trade market at that point. Someone could bite. Okay you say that they’ll just wait us out until we release him. But what if we hang on to him like the Pats did with Lawyer Milloy and trade him as the season starts? Chad would not have the precious time to “gel” with his receivers. Someone would make the trade.
ESPN SportsCenter just made it look as though he still wants no part of the Jets and is looking to take the BRIBE to retire.
jet chick:
Has farve cleaned up his addiction to painkillers and booze?
What is wrong with Unitas, Namath, and Staubach?
Where does it say he is going to outperform pennington this year based on his performance the last three years?
A Favre move has nothing to do with football.
Woody has secured Tannenbaum’s and Mangini’s jobs. Mangini knows that Favre is about Favre but the boss needs decoration and a new attraction for the 1.2 billion dollars stadium! Jets fans are you suckers?
Football wise, only our QBs would give us season of football.
What a disgrace , Tannenbaum is kissing Favre’s ass, because his boss told him that in order to screw the Jets fans they need to blind them with Favre’s glitter.
i’d throw Peyton Manning and Marino in there as well too, I do not even think Favre is in the top 10 QB’s of all time. There is no way Favre will be able to deal with the media here in NY as well. Can you imagine him throwing a 4 pick game against the Pats in the home opener, and the media crushing him? He cant and wont be able to handle the media here, he is too much of a self absorbed prick to be able to do that. He turns 39 in October so stay retired and collect $20 mil more. I’d rather take my chances with Chad or KC.
Jets arent even talking to the Packers or Favre according to ESPN
Favre only wants to go to Minn. or Chicago so he can stick it to the organization that gave him just about everything the past 17 or so years, now if that doesnt tell you anything about him, I dont know what does.
its not gonna happen thompsan doesnt have the balls 2 give up favre he just wants 2 keep this going long enough til everyone gets bored so it will all go away
Not sure where Bassett got the story but obviously its not true, unless someone knows something that everyone else doesnt
we dont need no 39 year old qb to come in here and muck things up for one year then retire . give chad the job
so sick of this damd farve talk he cant learn that play book in a month , and to all the so called jets fans stop drinking from the fountain of stupid . farve cant help this team .
OK…Lets see here…..you guys win
Farve is a talentless bum. He has no credentials to become a HOF player on the first ballot. It really wasn’t him that won all those games last year…and got his team to the championship game.
He also doesn’t own the consecutive game streak….it was all a hoax.
Chad is way better and has better QB skills, and someday will challenge Farves consecutive game record.
Bret is just a selfish prick and never went out and played his heart out for the team.
He is a real loser and talentless.
And if you believe that you probably also think George W`Bush was a great president.
How is it I waste space, but you Farve haters don’t.
Swizzle…The guy throwing 4 picks in the home opener against NE would be KC….not Farve
Sack Dance has explained in great detail and specificity based on fact why Farve is a huge upgrade. You guys don’t here him when he addressed specific issues with great clarity and logic..
You remind kind of remind me of the famous 3 apes …one with hands over ears, another over mouth and another over eyes…except someone gave permission to take the hands off your mouth….problem being the words seem to be coming out of another orifice.
You gotta be kidding me…Chad is done…He is a average QB that cant take a hit. He is always injured. And as for the back up yes the back up, I wont even mention that waste of a draft pick. He is done b4 he even started. So get Farve, Let him come in and throw some good balls, yes good balls to recievers that dont want to wait on a pass thats thrown in the first quarter and only lands in the third. Our running game is going to be great so play action all day. What we need to bring in for number 4 is a speedy receiver.
hmm i wonder how many jets fans know that farve never beat chad in any game when they played each other , i dont want no 39 year old qb .
saying he can win it all and has not sen the play book
well if farve is so good why dont the packers want him , why the heel do jets fans always want other teams trash 39 , years old please .
he had one good year , what about 06 and 05 wake up why do jets fans always hope for some stupid magic season even if farve come here he will be gone next year .
TRASH
well Mad Man no need to worry Favre isnt coming
Favre is so excited about coming to the JETS that he us seriously considering taking the packers $20 million and retiring. KC is our man.
favre is a true warrior. leaves everything out on the field. who cares that he is 39. I want to see any of u lazy out of shape arm hair qb’s get in front of one of his passes and try to catch it. bottom line is he is our best option at making a serious run and boosting self motivation within the players. w our revamped line = a strong run game he can take advantage of the one on one coverage our wr’s r gonna see. no defense has been afraid to throw 7 or 8 in the box against us. let’s see them do it now. I love chad but he just had some bad luck w injuries and supporting cast. I want to believe in kc but he shows lil flashes. he should have been ready by now. w the way we built this team thru FA and the draft favre is the missing piece of the puzzle. it would be an honor to cheer for a legend!
Wow.
sjfalcon2001, Problem is, we would have to pick up Favre first before we get rid of Pennington and teams, knowing we need to get his salary off our hands, would give us less return. It’s all based on very simple eBay auction dynamics- you don’t want/need it, you don’t get much for it.
Can we trade a pick and Chad to GB for Favre and a Pick, say their 5th round and our 2nd round with performance clauses built in to either increase or decrease the picks based on performance? Favre would bring excitement and a chance to be instant contenders. It has to get done this weekend or else we move on with what we have got. I truly hate to say this but we could give KC the starting job and Ainge the # 2 spot and take our lumps. Chad needs to go into coaching.
Hey Jetschick,
“How is it I waste space, but you Farve haters don’t”
Well, among other things, you refuse to actually consider anyone else’s point of view. sack and i had a lengthy back and forth over favre’s abilities, and despite never coming agreeing with him, I thoughtfully considered the post each time. All you do is repost the same crap again without addressing the points anyone has brought up.
But here’s another chance….this is the top 10 list that you criticized in another post, yet refused to address. give it a shot and see if you can actually address these points (i’ve removed the “offensive” painkillers comment so you don’t get “sidetracked” again)
Top 10 reasons NOT to get favre:
10. He’s just not that good. He makes terrible decisions with the football and is just as likely to cost the jets an additional 1-2 games as he is to win an extra 1-2 games.
9. He’s a selfish player who will not go out of his way to mentor our young qb’s. ask aaron rodgers – the guy is a d!ck. all he cares about is himself.
8. Because of #9 and the fact that favre’s remaining 2 years coincide with the last years of clemen’s contract, favre’s presence will completely stunt clemens development and prevent the jets from making any kind of assessment on his ability to QB this team when they’ll have to resign him or let him go in 2010.
7. He doesn’t want to play here.
6. What happens if he isn’t successful and the jets bench him? We become the team that snapped his consecutive start streak? great. no thank you.
5. Unless the jets could get him for a 2nd day pick (and they won’t), they’ll be giving up too much for what amounts to a rental player.
4. It’s going to cause salary cap problems.
3. God help us when we have to listen to announcers gush over him week after week and the jets as a team become a secondary storyline.
2. This isn’t fantasy football – you can’t just pick up a qb, stick him in your starting lineup and expect great things. performance hinges so much on a qb’s ability to grasp the new playbook and create chemistry with his teammates – both of which are kind of tough to do in a single training camp. The ability for to pick up that playbook seems like it will be especially difficult, as he is not a student of the game.
1***removed in the hopes that jetschick will respond to the other, serious reasons****
Favre to the Jets is similar to all the hype over Darren McFadden coming here before the Draft: Sounds intriguing, Divides fanbase, Might Happen, Drives up interest from other teams, Ultimately doesn’t happen.
we can stop the debate. Favre said straight up he wont talk to our front office. Its OVER. We got dissed, good thing we crushed them at their home in 2006.
Eastside,
It doesn’t matter now since the scenario will never happen, but I didn’t say we would get a #1 draft pick, I just said we would get something in trade. There were posters who were saying that we’d release him and get nothing back. Pennington would fetch something, but not his true market value for the reasons you gave, but we would not give him up for nothing. That was my point.
jetschick,
I see your point on Favre potentially being a better option than what the jets currently have on the roster but in the last two offseasons the Jets have dumped the “me-first” players and brought in guys with more team-oriented personalities. Are you telling me that Brett Favre would be team first? He kept his playing streak alive last year by playing with a thumb injury that probably caused his team to lose a couple games. He’s played the “retirement game” in Green Bay for the past four years.
Brett Favre is only happy when he’s the center of attention but he’s not good with criticism. He’s also been allowed to go out on the field and throw INTs because he’s also throwing TDs but Brett has thrown plenty of INTs to cost his team games not just TDs to win them. He is a gunslinger, but at this poit in his career has too little care about his teammates and too much care for his own personal glory. I can do without that.
Oh, I would take Marino, Elway, Montana, Steve Young, Manning, Brady (god I hate saying that) and Jim Kelly over Favre and that’s just going back a few years. These guys all had the ability to win games for your team and they also wouldn’t go out and throw three picks to lose it.
