Andrew Weiss did a good job of giving us a sense of what happened at camp yesterday … OTHER than the rally. Remember, if you are going to check out a practice, it could be worth a $50 Gift Card to Best Buy! Send in your pictures, notes, thoughts, whatever, and we’ll post them up! I try to read all comments, but sending me an email is the best method to get entered in the contest.
Camp Report – Wednesday, July 30, 2008.
To the fans who remained sitting in the stands long after it became clear that the entire practice would take place on the next field over I can only say “I salute your determination.”
First observation: you can’t get much done in two hours. For one thing, what’s with all these stretching and agility exercises? Do those on your own time. And the drills? Didn’t you hit enough pylons in college? And, what about Coles, Harris and Washington? Not practicing? I know I didn’t phone ahead but it was the only day I could attend. You guys are always thinking about yourselves.
Other observations: Really big guy: Kris Jenkins, massive, a monster. There’s no question he will draw double teams as he got push on every play from scrimmage. It helps the ends too. Everybody is now playing on the offensive side of the ball. No more four yards before first contact on running plays. I seem to remember “no gain” but I associate it with Marty Lyons (I know I’m dating myself).
OLine looks like its rounding into shape. Brick looks bigger and a lot of that seems to be in his legs. For the first string line as a whole, no gaffes but no breakthrough runs either. It’ll take time.
Linebackers and backfield did not impress one way or the other. Gholston is very large but seems to bend only at the waist. I suppose its a good thing that neither they nor the Oline penetrated the other very much.
Marcus Henry, btw, looks like a man among boys although he isn’t tremendously impressive as a receiver. Stuckey and Brad Smith both caught a lot of passes. Stuckey appears to have a slight edge and, as already reported, great hands
Dustin Keller is another story. This guy gets open and he catches passes even in traffic. Who cares if he can’t block, I’m impressed. Chemistry bet Penny and Cotchery was apparent on a number of sideline outs in the 2-minute drill. With Coles, Stuckey, Cotchery and Keller on the same field my guess is the Pats are going to have their hands full with their mediocre backfield and septuagenerian linebackers.
Clemens has an edge in arm strength. When you see the two one after the other, Penny is trying to put zip on his short throws by follow through and mechanics where Clemens does it naturally. Still, there is no comparison in scrimmages. Penny is poised, even under pressure and he finds open guys. I thoink this competition is over, barring injury or a Penny-like, gametime renaissance for KC.
That’s about it. Hot as blazes A few bright spots including the sturdy brunette and the willowy blonde but otherwise, your typical day at practice.
