I know … I know … I’m sorry.
Favre for the first time, understands that he’s not going to stay in the division. Word is that Favre will likely be a Buccaneer but that the Jets are involved. According to Chris Mortensen in the above clip, it seems that the Jets had negotiated a better trade than the Bucs, which one way or another you have to commend Tannenbaum for.
All the same, we’re hitting the time wall here. Favre needs to get in camp, Favre needs to study a playbook (which he doesn’t like to do as it is) and if Favre joins the Jets he needs to mentor the younger QBs, something he refused to do for Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay.

Your high!
-
Are the Jets ready to win with Favre right now? If they waver at all on the answer, than trading for Favre is the wrong move. It would be detrimental to the franchise for them to trade for Favre and then go 8-8 this season, far worse than not getting Favre and going 6-10. If the Jets honestly think they can make a run for a title then this is the right move. Otherwise, just forget about it.
-
How in the world would Farve learn the playbook in roughly three weeks? Won’t this be a huge obstacle to being productive?
-
I’m with O’Connor of the Record. Favre is, indeed, a self-serving hypocrite. I don’t think that he can elevate the Jets to the Super Bowl, or even the AFC East title, this season. And why would Tangini want to hang the franchise’s future – not to mention their own – on Favre at this point? Not to mention the circus that he’d bring to town with him at this point. I’m not saying that it wouldn’t be exciting to bring him in, but I don’t think that would be a great, or even good, football move. The Jets should bite the bullet and move on.
-
Why take an older player who doesn’t want to be here in the first place. The second that he runs into some adversity (or the NY media), he is done. This is an accident waiting to happen. I read today that he has an abdominal strain and couldn’t participate, if he wanted to. Only the Jets could go after this guy so desparately, only to add another ugly chapter to our cursed history. Just when things are looking up for Jet fans – bang, another nightmare scenario.
Oh yeah, Johnny, get off the drugs, son. They’ll kill you.
-
Put the effort and the money into Brady Quinn.
-
If Farve goes to the Bucs, that could create an interesting scenario for the Jets. The Bucs would likely have to either release or trade for much less than full value both Jeff Garcia and Chris Simms. The Jets could use either one of them since it is obvious that Tangini has no confidence in either Pennington or Clemens. Lets be honest, the Jets need a third option because Ratliff and Ainge aren’t ready to play this year.
-
Let me first say that it is very possible that Farve is a self serving D-Bag.
AND
I agree that farve would be a two year rental (at best).
BUT
How many years do you think Pennington has left? He’s had so many injuries that he can’t possible last into his mid 30′s. So It’s not like we would be mortgaging our future for Farve.
I say we grab him and roll the dice!
-
Favre retired because he doesn’t want to spend time studying film and practicing during the week. He wishes he could just show up on Sunday and play. Is this the type of guy Mangini wants as his QB? And, more important, there’s the…. MADDEN CURSE!
-
Forget Favre! Get Garcia from the Bucs after Favre is traded there.
-
Old. Overrated. Interception. Machine.
I can only hope that the continued Jets FO interest in this Mississippi turd is to pull off the unlikely scenario that we get him, then trade him to one of the few teams that has a murkier QB situation than we do. If Favre goes to TB, however, I would be all over taking a run at Garcia – who is a few years younger, a lot smarter and more mobile than BF.
-
you are so stupid. it honestly makes me sick to hear jets fans say they dont want brett favre. have you ever seen a football game? who is the best QB of these three… Brett Chad or Clemens. easy answer. brett gives us the best chance to win and he will actually bring some excitement to the jets organization so we actually dont have to listen to eli manning and the superbowl champion giants all season. clemens is awful, but under favre for a year or to he can learn to be a good qb. i love chad but his shoulder is just so screwed up and he made so many dumb decisions when the game was on the line last year. if you honestly think brett favre would not help out this year then you are absolutely crazy. chad will start if we dont get him because clemens is not ready and probably never will be. give up anything to get favre. the only thing that should be holding this trade back is if brett doesnt want to play here. THATS ALL. honestly, all of you who want clemens to start and want to rebuild come talk to me when we are 2-4 and your still excited to see kellen improve. you guys make me sick.
-
yeash. enough.
i know favre is an upgrade on pennington and all, but i still get the feeling this could go real bad.
when this first came out esiason on fan in the morning talked about how familiarity with the playbook and players will be a big deal, especially after week 3 or 4 (as defenses adapt). and favre is used a deep comfort level with his system. kinda rational he’s hedging on ny. -
All arguments about Favre been a “better” QB than Chad or even Clemens hold water only in a vacuum.
How is it possible, that a guy who does not study film or playbooks and disregards coaches can be an upgrade on such a team sport? This is no tennis! Favre can function only in Green Bay because players and coaches have adjusted the other way around, that is studying Favre’s playbook.
Mangini knows this, and there is a 0% chance that he wants Favre. So why do we insist? I guess it is the new stadium. But it definitely is not about the game of football and the SB. -
This just seems like some sick ride and I want off already! Enough! “He’s coming here!” “He’s going to Tampa.” “He’s going to Winnipeg!” Ugh!
Either get him or let him go to Tampa, but please, resolve this sooner rather than later. I hate all this stinking (polite word) drama.
-
If he is going somewhere, it will be Tampa.
But the FOs insistence on getting him is not a vote of confidence for Clemens.
On another note, although I am a Chad supporter, I believe that Clemens most likely will start in the Cleveland game and most likely the season if he is not mistake prone with fumbles and interceptions. This is the objective of the FO, for obvious reasons. You can sense that from Pennington’s responses to journalists and the lack of last year’s close relationship with Mangini and Tannenbaum. Pennington serves more like an insurance policy. Clemens job is his to lose. -

Looks more likely Fahvray will be a Buc.
-
Tom, In a dream world, Brett Favre would come here on his white horse and throw the ball all over the field. We would beat the Giants in the SB and have a parade down the canyon of heroes.
In reality, a 39 year old, mixed up, aging football player would come to the Jets, have a mediocre year (not being familiar with the playbook, team, receivers, NY, etc…) and then retire on us, because his days of greatness are behind him. Pennington whipped his butt a few years ago and he lost to Eli in the playoffs, last year.
I know that dreams die hard but, you should wake up.
-
favre to bubba franks will be interesting for the jets.
-
The Jets need to get Jeff Garcia. He’s slightly younger, more mobile and actually wants to play. They should give draft picks/Pennington up let the Buc’s have Favre, and get Garcia.
Very underrated qb that will actually want to play until he is physically unable.
Side note, Garcia’s wife would be a welcome addition to the Jets sideline and probably be the hottest wife/gf of any player on the Jets.
-
If for some stupid reason we get Favre then Tangini is giving up on Clemens. No way his he gonna start ever after Favre is gone in 1 to 2 years (more likely 1 imo). Then we have to draft or sign a QB in 09 and do this all over again. No way Favre can get the Jets past the 1st round of the playoffs or even to there. He had 1 very good year last year but was horrible the 2 years before that. Better chance he reverts to 2006 Brett Favre than 2007. His average stat lines will be 220-250 yrds 1-2 tds 2-3 ints per game
-
Harvlis
I could have sworn that Brett was an MVP candidate last year…
When was the last time the Jets had anyone even close???
-
I think that as Jets fans, we are soo use to losing that we are afraid to win.
-
Look, Favre won’t agree to come to the Jets if he can go to the Bucs, which is a team he also spurned. The reason is simple, Favre is more comfortable in a modified West Coast offense (I say modified because Brett throws the long ball more than most West Coast QBs.) Also, the Bucs are coming off of a playoff season, while the Jets are coming off of a 4-12 embarassment.
Now, the idea that Favre cannot get up to speed in a month is ridiculous. He’s been a starting QB for 16 years straight. Additionally, the Packers offense last year was more run-oriented that the classic West Coast offense. So, at 37 he was able to run a different system, but at 38 he isn’t?
Jeff Garcia?!? I guess all of you realize that he’s only 4 months younger than Favre? He’s 38 now, just like Favre. Also, unlike Favre, Garcia is the proto-type West Coast QB and, to my knowledge, he’s never run successfully anything but a West Coast offense his entire career, even in Canada! So, Favre can’t learn the playbook, but Garcia can? I like Garcia and he wouldn’t be a bad back up QB, but the more I think about it, the more I think he’d be a waste. Also, look at his ugly Cleveland and Detroit stats and let me know how he would fair in an offense that is not a long-standing West Coast offense.
Getting Favre would be a risk, the kind of risk the SOJ never make. Favre to Keller? Keller would flirt with 1,000 yards and a 15 yard (or better) average because no QB in NFL history uses his TEs better. The running game? TJ and Leon will not see 8-men in the box all season. Blitzes? Favre’s improvisation skills are legendary. 2:00 minute drills? Favre’s a master. Favre makes the Jets a better team. How much better? Who knows? But, an average Favre season would be one of the best ever by a Jets QB. Isn’t that worth it?
Lastly, kudos to Tannenbaum. It’s a sign to all the agents for QBs out there that the Jets are looking for an upgrade at QB. I don’t know what QBs have their contracts up soon, but there might be a silver-lining in all of this because the Jets need a QB of the future.
-
Harvlis,
Are you Chad Pennington’s dad? Seriously, you never say anything negative about him, never critic any of his play, and you wouldn’t trade or release him for any other quarterback on the planet. It seems like if the Patriots were willing to trade Tom Brady for straight up for Chad Pennington you would disapprove and say CP is better and Tom Brady is gay.
Although I would agree with you that Tom Brady is gay.
-
Harvlis, Brady Quinn would be such a smart move it’s not even funny! Hell I would even go after Derek Anderson! Garcia vs. Farve? Anyone want to build this franchise anymore?
-
From http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/26013997/
“Brett’s ready to go play,” Favre’s agent, James “Bus” Cook, told the Jackson Clarion-Ledger Wednesday morning. “It looks like it’s going to be New York or Tampa Bay. We’re waiting to find out and we could learn in the next hour or so.”
So close yet so far from dumping Chad Pennington –
-
Sack, I love that Garcia is 4months younger remark. My argument would be Belicheats D picking off Farve left and right. The coaching staff has a program that is starting to come together personel wise. It’s starting to look like a 3-4 and we are starting to look more like a run first O but instead of getting your franchise QB we’re looking at a quick fix for a year MAYBE 2?
-
for a 3rd round pick only or taking garcia aftet they trade him to the BUCS
i love Garcia, and think he fits better in our offense compared to brett -
To echo Sean:
“Favre warming up to Jets”

Goodbye Chad –
-
Chad is the only QB that guarantees playoffs!
-
Tannenbaum so far for every good move that he makes, he nullifies it with a bad one.
You cannot trust him.In the end he will screw even Mangini. -
Brett Favre is an A**hole. I mean come on who does this guy think he is. He is not one of the greatest athletes out there like he is portrayed by ESPN. Its a load of bull, he needs to sit home and maybe do some more wrangler commercials and watch Aaron Rodgers progress on his big screen TV. He has done the organization that treated him like a King, DIIIRRRTTY. If he goes to a team, he will pick the team that will kiss his ass the most and wont make him study any film or learn a playbook. He will end up in Tampa Bay and hopefully get hurt….Favre u suck…
-
“You cannot trust him.In the end he will screw even Mangini.”
Your losing what little mind you have left Nikolas. Lay off the vodka in the afternoons.
-
Again, Sackdance is making the most sense. And Harvlis is Chads uncle. Get the facts straight
-
Najy – If he was the answer, how come the Packers want to move on without him. I would rather groom KC than take Farve at the end of his career.
18andOne – Most Chad haters are looking at last year and basing his career on it. I remember the QB who beat Peyton Mannings’ butt in the playoffs and who should have beat big bad Ben and the Steelers in another playoff game. I would not deny that Chad threw some ugly balls and has made some bad decisions. Every QB has done those same things. When Chad is healthy and playing behind a solid line, he is an excellent QB. He has had a problem staying healthy, no doubt. If you played behind the O-lines that he has had to, you would have been hospitalized, as well. My loyalty comes from the decision between Chad vs KC. Until I see him look foolish with our new Offensive team – I am backing Chad to get us to the playoffs. If the Jets were looking to trade for a solid QB that could be with us into the future, ie. Brady Quinn, Matt Leinart, etc…, I could get behind that. Favre would be two steps back.
-
I simply don’t understand the “Farve is a risk” talk. Compared to what? Like Pennington and Clemons are risk free. Let’s take them one at a time. First Pennington. Bret is great, Chad is not. Bret is not the future of the franchise, neither is Chad. Advantage Favre. Now Clemons. Farve is great, Kellen is not. Bret is not the future of the franchise, Kellen maybe (but only maybe) is. The bottom line is this. The only reason to not get Bret (assuming the price is reasonable) is if you believe that Kellen is the franchise qb for the next 10 years. If you don’t think that will happen (or more importantly, Tangini has come to that conclusion), then you get Favre, enjoy the present and keep looking for the QB of the future.
-
Harvlis, c’mon, I know you are bright, do you think the Packers think Favre can’t play, or is it that they 1) are tired of his soap opera, and 2) had committed themselves to Aaron Rodgers when Favre retired. You know he can still play and is better than Rodgers right now. That is not the argument to make against getting BF.
-
As much as I think that Favre is a great QB, and I’m almost sold on the idea of him coming to the Jets, I can’t help but think that the only one who truly benefits from this is Brett Favre.
If the trade had happened a month ago, I’d be all for it, but for him to come in now, I don’t think he can pick up enough of the offense to be effective. Plus I think him coming here will create a circus that will make whats going on now in GB seem like a walk in the park.
-
jvsvn,
You make total sense, and I agree with your logic. I’m just hung up on the circus that will develop if he comes here.
-
Harvlis,
They are idiots in Greenbay. It doesnt matter what the FO wants.
I bet if you ask the players and even the Head Coach, they will tell you that they want Brett.. Unfortunatley, I think the FO is tired of Brett and his delimma every year once the season is over.
They have every right to be fed up with Brett, but comon on… We dont have anybody on our Roster that can compare to Brett Favre… Bring Brett Favre is an instant upgrade to our team.
FORGET ABOUT THE FUTURE… FORGET ABOUT 3 AND 4 YEARS FROM NOW!
THE FUTURE IS THIS COMING SEASON!!! THE FUTURE IS LESS THAN A MONTH AWAY….
-
Harvlis,
Do you agree that Favre is better than Kellen and Chad right now??
-
Najy,
Can you be sure that that “better” factor is going to translate into wins? I’m not so sure.
Repeated from above:
As much as I think that Favre is a great QB, and I’m almost sold on the idea of him coming to the Jets, I can’t help but think that the only one who truly benefits from this is Brett Favre. If the trade had happened a month ago, I’d be all for it, but for him to come in now, I don’t think he can pick up enough of the offense to be effective. Plus I think him coming here will create a circus that will make whats going on now in GB seem like a walk in the park.
-
I still don’t know what to make of the Favre possibility, so in the meantime let me just say this: if we get Jeff Garcia, I’m jumping off the Bay Bridge. (I live in Maryland – I’m too lazy to drive up to the Verrazano.)
Jeff Garcia? Really? Have we not learned that he can only succeed in one offense – the purest form of the West Coast? He’s played two seasons during his career in any other offense, and his combined numbers were 58% comp pct and a 13/15 TD/INT ratio. You want that guy learning the Jets offense? At 38? What, Trent Green isn’t available?
-
ramble914,
The point is that he is better than Chad and Kellen… Hands down.
Why wouldnt you want an upgrade in the position?? I dont understand.
So wat if it takes him a couple games into the season to get going but just imagine what Novemeber would be like in the Meadowlands when it starts to get cold and the Jets and Brett Favre are kicking on all cylinders…
Sure he is old, and stubborn, and a little selfish but he is still better than anything that we have.
-
Am I missing something, but what is preventing either team (Jets or Bucs) from trading for Favre and then passing him on to the vikes for more than they had to give up?
-
NLD1856, thats a very intriguing point. It seems to me that the most difficult part of that process would be (aside from convincing the vikes or bears to give up more than we just paid) breaking the news to a rabid fan base that we just got brett favre . . . and traded him away. But I certainly see the logic in it.
-
SackDance99 – I have alot of respect for your opinions and often agree with you, but if you honestly think that Favre can waltz in here and get “up to speed” in a month – based on the fact that he’s been a starting QB for another team for 16 years – well, then I need to start smokin’ some of what you are puffin!
Different playbook, different system, different coaches, different players, wake up, it’s a pathetically bad idea.
Yes, as QB of the Packers, his mediocre stats are awesome. Those stats don’t necessarily translate to any team he plays for, any time, any where. Team Kotite brought in Neil O’Donnell because he had just been to the SB, even though he was a mediocre QB who was playing in the perfect system. Favre at 38/39 is at best a mediocre QB who has been playing in the perfect system. Last time I looked, we already have a few mediocre QBs on the roster, who:
A.) Know the system, coaches and players
B.) Won’t create a circus atmosphere that will distract the other players (especially the young ones)
and C.) At least in Clemens case, have a future and a potential upside. If Chad starts, he’ll be light years better than last year as well.
Don’t get a woody just because you hear a HOF QBs name mentioned in the same sentence as NY Jets. As mentioned by someone above, if he was still that great, the pack would never let him go.
-
Pete, If we end up getting Favre, I promise you, I won’t be crying in my pillow. Like all Jet fans, I will be hoping that his showing up late and not knowing the coaches, the playbook, the O-Line, the receivers, the backs, & the NY/NJ area, will not be a problem for him. Jet management should pass on Favre, for some of the same reasons that it doesn’t make sense for the Packers to take him back. It is too close to the start of the season and what would we do with our other QB’s (who have been working their butts off to learn the system). From what many players have said, the playbook is as thick as a phone book. This isn’t touch football, with you friends, in the backyard. Brett isn’t going to draw the play in the dirt for the offense – He has to learn the system, the terminology, the timing with his line, backs, & receivers. By the time he learned enough to be effective, the local media, and booing fans, will have driven him back into retirement.
Najy, Brett is one of the best QB’s of all time. No one is denying that. Read what I previously wrote in this post and tell me how Brett is going to be prepared to be effective for this season. Chad and KC have been with the team through an entire pre-season. They know the system and are familiar with their teammates. They will be much more effective, this year, than Favre.
-
What Harvlis said. Amen. Jah Love.
-
NYC Parking Expert:
First, Favre’s “mediocre stats”??? Last year he was FO’s 3rd rated QB behind Brady and Peyton and an MVP candidate.
Second, you have absolutely no proof that a 17-year veteran can’t in 1 month get up to speed and QB an NFL team. You make it sound like the Jets have the most complex offense in NFL history and use formations that Favre has never seen. Sure, the WRs would have to get used to Favre’s bullets (but KC throws pretty hard), Favre would have to get the Jets terminology down, and he’d have to learn some different plays. But, what’s more likely is that Schott would meet with Favre, go over the playbook, find the plays that Favre is familiar with (which is likely 100s of plays) and the playbook would be simplified.
Third, knowing the coaches? Favre has made the playoffs with 3 different coaches and staffs, with multiple offensive coordinators. His system was never exactly the same. The Pack’s offensive coordinator last year, Joe Philbin, was in his first season. Yet, Favre had arguably his best season this decade. Also, Philbin is a zone blocking, run first, OC. Hmmmm, you do know that Bill Callahan is one of the architects of the zone blocking, power running game? No, of course not, because spouting off rank speculation and insults is always better than reasoned analysis, right?
Fourth, I never say that any one is taking drugs for making dumb comments, but I would like to know what your excuse is.
-
Want more proof? Here’s this item from Tim Graham’s AFC East blog on ESPN.com:
Favre would have help translating the playbook. Bill Callahan, the Jets’ offensive line coach and top Mangini assistant, knows the West Coast offense from his Oakland Raiders days (Callahan was Jon Gruden’s offensive coordinator before succeeding him) and could help Favre assimilate the play calls into concepts he understands.
The “Favre can’t learn the playbook” argument is simply wrong.
-
Playing the lame-duck Chad has virtually no upside. He’s a classy guy, good sport, who might get you 10 victories and a Wild Card win, tops, at this stage of his injury-plagued career. And that’s only if every other facet of the team is clicking on all cylinders. If Clemens can’t beat him out, then the team is just as weak at the position as every NFL prognosticator in the country claims it is.
I definitely liked the idea of Favre a lot more two weeks ago when there was more camp and adjustment time ahead of him, but I still couldn’t fault the FO for taking a flyer on him now. Maybe he’ll get rejuvenated and inspired and pull one more great season out. Hell, if he matches last season we’d already be way ahead. He’s probably a better model for KC to play behind, too. Better match of skill set than with Chad. If he doesn’t deliver, so what? We probably weren’t going very far with what we had, anyway.
The Favre haters sure have a lot of negative stuff to say about him and I acknowledge there’s validity to some of it. But he is a winner with rings to prove it. He’s not going to always make the safe drop-off, ala Chad, but as Cervantes said, Faint heart never won fair maiden…
I guarantee there is not one D coordinator in the league who, up by 6 with 90 seconds to play would say, “I’m still worried, they’ve got Chad Pennington back there.”
-
Ramble 914 you are an idiot and maybe high as well. Get Favre already. Let’s turn the corner.
-
Subway,
What did those NFL prognosticators say about Eli Manning. What was his ceiling, prior to winning the SB.
By the way, the two times that Chad played Green Bay in regular season, we beat the crap out of them and Chad outplayed Brett. Why would I take the loser?
-
Im with Ramble on this one. Farve wont make us better than the Patriots. Whats the end game here? He does have a good season then retires…again? No SB and a poor draft slot slot next year plus what we gave up to get him, and CP will be a year older and KC will miss his chance because we will/better draft a QB high 1st round next year. DUMB!
-
Will some one help out that guy from VA who wants to know how he can watch the Cleveland game? I’m in Albany and I dont know if I’m going to be able to see it:( Will it be on NFL Network? SNY says they are going to replay after the game is over but NEVER do! HELP!
-
Harvlis-
I admire your loyalty to Chad. That’s about the nicest thing I can say about the examples you keep bringing up.
Suffice it to say that virtually everyone in the football universe rated Eli’s potential much higher than they ever pegged Chad’s and that’s why he kept getting the chances he got. He finally delivered but I still wouldn’t even put him as high as two levels below Favre in his prime.
And, if at the end of the Jets 42-17 victory over Green Bay in 2002, Mike Sherman had said “I’ll give you Favre for Pennington straight up, right now,” do you think Herm and Bradway would have waited a half second before agreeing? Would any other FO? Same with Peyton after the one playoff game you can’t seem to shake. 100% of GMs in the NFL would have taken Peyton over Chad even as the Jets were walking off sharing high fives. Seriously. It’s such a silly argument.
You can say it’s a risk to take Favre now, at this point in his career, this late in camp, etc. That’s a rational argument. But this continuously trying to place Chad above some of the greats of all time, Peyton, Favre, etc., just takes the wind out of any credibility you have.
-
Subway, When everybody is beating down Chad, I feel that I have to stand up for him. I never said that he was better than any specific QB’s. I just pointed out the games that Chad won, to remind people that he is not a mediocre player, he is a very good QB. I am not worried about him, if the line holds up and he stays healthy. I don’t believe that any QB has a ceiling. It is a team game. Favre coming over here will only set us back, based on the reasons that I have already stated. Chad can take us as far as his surrounding cast allows. He has done it before, he will do it again.
-
If Favre goes to the Bucs, I would try for Garcia, but at much less cost. I mean come on, the Bucs have 5 QBs on their roster now before Favre.
I agree with those who want to get Quinn out of Cleveland, but the Browns have repeatedly said they want to keep both of them and they are not shopping either one of them, so it’s not like its a will we get Farve or Quinn type of situation. It’s Favre or stick with CP and KC.
For the record, I’m still conflicted about Favre but if neither Chad nor KC has shown anything then I’m okay with it. Just don’t expect him to play out his contract.
-
The fact is KC has not shown anything in camp. Chad is Chad. Which is better than KC but not as good as Favre.
Brady Quinn will not be in Cleveland next year if Anderson has a good year.
-
I THOUGHT YOU SAID YOU WERE PUTTING AN END TO THIS IDIOTIC FARVE TALK.
I’VE JUST DELETED THEJETSBLOG FROM MY BOOKMARK.
BYE-BYE.
-
patd,
That’s not true, KC has shown exactaly what a 3rd year QB will show, plenty of upside coupled with plenty of learning to do. He throws a lot of picks, but also throws a lot of TD’s and long gainers. He is just like Matt Hassleback when he was traded to Settle. Mike Holmgren had to spend time and teach him, but he is rewarded with a perrinnial playoff caliber QB. The Favre sh_t, I don’t know, sounds like another Jets disaster story to me.
-
espn is saying 4th round pick that can go to a 2nd rounder….jets are offering

Favre to Chris Baker = Super Bowls
