Sports Media World Waits With Bated Breath

Like the announcement of a new Pope in Rome, the Sports media world seems to be holding their breath waiting for Favre to appear on his front porch in Hattiesburg, MS.  Someone please hit me in the face with a tire iron.

Apparently after days of not even wanting to talk to the Jets, Favre now might be waving the Jersey state flag.

Favre’s agent, Bus Cook, told The Sporting News that Favre would be willing to play for either the Jets or Tampa, although some league sources believed that Cook might have been trying to leverage the Jets into a deal that would be more beneficial for the Packers in a trade with Tampa.

“Would be willing” is he doing someone a favor?  Seems like that’s what everyone else is doing for him until he actually had a tough-love talk with his former coach.

Maybe it’s just me, but it seems a bit disingenuous to put forth a front that he’s jazzed about playing for the Jets now, especially after he would have nothing to do with the team for over a week.

  1. How long until we sign Jeff Garcia and trade Chad to the Vikings?

  2. I can’t take it anymore, make the announcement already. Funny thing is I’m not sure I want Farve on the Jets.

  3. Come home Brett…

    Please come home!

  4. favre become a jet we become contenders.

  5. You can say all you want about him acting like a baby. But the truth of the matter is that he can do that. We all know(or atleast should know it) or current QB situation is borderline pitaful and with Favre coming aboard we become instant contenders and win possible 10 or 11 games. Let me waffle and whine but as long as he signs on with Jets we all should be very happy.

  6. GO PACK GO!!!!!!!

  7. if the jets get favre they are looking at 11-12 wins. Tannenbaum should be doing everything he can to get favre to NY

  8. Bassett …I am with you. I am not rooting for Favre even if he is in a Jets uniform. Enough.

  9. Tannenbaum should be a man, hold a press conference and announce to the world that the Jets have absolutely no interest in Favre. He’s a 38 year old spoiled punk who won’t make the Jets any more contenders than they already are. Take the cheesey blinders off – were the packers a contender from 2002-2006 with Favre as QB? Now you expect him to come here, learn a new playbook, mesh with new players and coaches with the 1st preseason game about to be played in just over 24 hours?? After he’s acted for weeks like the Jets are dirt?

Please, please wake up, it’s too painful to read. Tanny, be a man and tell him and his agent to F*** off!

  10. Tampa is the arm pit of Florida. Besides it never snows there. Why would Brett want to play in Tampa especially when the JETS have a better team (at least on paper) and more potential.

  11. nyc parking expert hit it right on the nose we dont need him i am a long time jet fan and i tell you farve is a mistake ny media will eat him alive really plus what we really need is a franchise Qb long term). a qb we can build around for the next 5 – 8 years sure in hell aint going to be the very short clemens last year he held on to the ball way to long cause he could not see over the than 6′3 line we had and this year the hieght went to 6′5 give or take hes not our guy plus why did we draft him in the first place he so tiny now ainge i like his size and he was taught by one of the best collage Qb coach out there im really upset that we spent so much money in the off season just to tank with with the qb spot that to is the same old jets Dam Dam Dam

  12. stop!! Favre will be good for us. Chand has been in for 9 and we have 0 appereances in the AFC Championship game…we brought Vinny in 1999 and we got to the AFC Championship game. We need a big time Qb who has been there and done that, we have Faneca, and must inmproved line, TJones has been to the big show, must improves Defense….now or never, let’s do it….cry baby or not..lets get to the big game!!!

  13. Favre will never get us to the big game

  14. Brett, if your reading this (or Cook) make a choice. And please let it be the Jets.

Favre will never get us to the big game

Did I miss when the jets were relevant last season and competing for anything other than a high draft pick which they of course messed up also.

  16. I just don’t know guys, I’m just a little unsure about signing with the jets. I mean I love the idea of Favre to Stuckey! (money), but there is nothing really else calling me here. You do play in the same division as a team that went 16-0. Although I do love the fact that you guys chant sucks after you hear the names of the guys being introduced during the pre game. Makes me chuckle.

My arm is a ltitle better than Chad Spaghetti Arm Pennington.

    You guys suck.

  17. farve is a hugh mistake waiting to happen…with all the uncertainties waiting in the lurch…to unpredictable at this stage in his career…look at what he’s doing to the team he claims to love and call home…i can only imagine what kind of shiiite he’ll pull if he’s on another team…i dont want him…just my thoughts…

  18. We don’t have a starting QB or we would not be interested. Make the trade get Favre and trade Chad. Trust me it will be for the best. It is not rocket science. Wouldn’t it be great to look forward to playing good teams instead of dreading it.

  19. i say get brett and KEEP CHAD ….kellen clemmens is doo-doo….

  20. or is that do-do…either way he’s crapola

  21. i can’t wait for the announcement that favre is a ny jets….i would love to see belicheat face when he hear the news.

  22. Doesn’t sound great for the Jets…

    6:58 p.m.
    From SI.com’s Peter King

Here’s what I’m hearing about the potential Favre deal tonight:

    • I want to stress that I wouldn’t bet my mortgage on this but it is what I’ve heard reliably. I hear the Jets are offering a solid third-round draft choice that could rise to a first-round draft choice depending on the team’s performance and how well Favre plays.

    • I’m told the Bucs positively would not make an offer that lofty. The Packers have suggested a couple of different scenarios involving draft choices with Tampa Bay but I hear that the Packers are not close to doing anything tonight.

    • My gut feeling? Brett Favre Held Hostage will reach Thursday or perhaps longer. Tampa Bay general manager Bruce Allen drives a very hard bargain, and I wouldn’t expect the Packers to be able to do business easily with him. I don’t know if Favre or agent Bus Cook has told Green Bay where he prefers to play, but if his choice is Tampa Bay, this could take a while, especially if the Packers are willing to send him to a team they play in Week 4.

  23. what makes anyone think an old man that has never played for another team in his life, and very few systems at that, could roll into camp mad late and pick up where he left off. All you people that ripped into chad for throwing untimley interceptions You havent seen anything yet as far as ludicrous back breakin scratch your head interceptions untill you see old man favre do his stuff. I in all my heart and praying that we dont get favre. Chad is unquestionbly good enough to get it done.

  24. hey Basset can I get that tire iron after you, so I could hit myself in the face as well. Favre is a tool, he is using the Jets as leverage so he can go to Tampa, and play his old team in week 4. Your absolutely right NYC Parking Expert, he will not get us to the big game, if he becomes a Jet which I hope he doesnt, he will blow big time,
    1. he barely studies film, so what makes people think he is going to start doing it now.
    2. Do we have the 12 mil cap space right now.
    3. Screw him, now he decides he may want to play for the Jets because his old team doesnt want a QB who is turning 39 this season.
    4. There is no way in hell he will be able to learn a new offense in a month, he is a dumb redneck, who probably can barely read.
    5. This offense needs a QB who doesnt turn the ball over, which is one of Favre’s great assets.

  25. Just to clarify I meant in 5, he turns the ball over way too much.

  26. We don’t need Favre.
    Are you kidding me.

    Chad can get it done.
    Again, are you kidding me
    Favre is a dumb redneck.
The guy is a hall of famer.

    Favre is a spoiled punk.
The guy just wants to play football.

Favre has treated the Jets like dirt.
The guy wanted to play for Green Bay. That is not going to happen so now he is talking to the Jets.

These are not reasons for not signing Favre but just plain BS.

He will be a Jet because Green Bay does not want to play against Favre in the regular season.

  27. Favre may throw interceptions but he was carrying the youngest team in football on his shoulders.

Favre does hold the record for most touch downs.

  28. woody wants tan to get favre…main reason: the psl fees…season ticket holders would be getting there money’s worth ( 20,000 ) to see a legend ( so called ) in a jets uniform possibly bringing a championship to a franchise that desperately needs one. favre will be a jet

  29. I notice you left out my actual point, Favre not being able to learn a offense in a month, the others I was just being sarcastic. Cmon he does make way too many to’s and dumb decisions. What does a hall of famer have to do with a dumb redneck look at terry bradshaw.

  30. Favre will be a Jet.

Green Bay will not let him go to Tampa and the Jets are offering more.

With all the FA’s the Jets signed it makes sence to bring in Favre.

  31. Till Woody and his Kindergarten FO have a restraining order from all Jet related maters, this organization will be a joke. These people are clueless and stupid.

  32. then what’s the answer Nikolas?

  33. swizzle81

Do we have the 12 mil cap space doesn’t sound sarcastic. Favre can learn the playbook and perform at a higher level than what we have now. Calling Favre a redneck is elitest BS. Comparing him to Bradshaw is also flawed. Favre has never carried himself like Bradshaw the clown. Also it is doubtful that Bradshaw would be sucessful in this age of football. I don’t know if anyone has noticed but in this age of improved defenses there just aren’t as many sucessfull QBs as in years past. The NFL has tried by tying the hands of the defensive backs. Favre has proven he can do it.

  34. This is what I think will happen. Favre will sign with the Jets tomorrow. Tampa Bay would of struck a deal by now (TODAY) if they wanted him bad enough! Obviously, they (TAMPA BAY) are not willing to offer better compensation than the Jets are prepared to offer, and Green Bay are not suckers they are businessmen. So like it or not Jets fans Favre will be our starting QB! I also think he will be our QB for at least 2 seasons.

  35. pat d- in refrence to chad getting it done a joke. Let me make sure we are talking about the same man. Chad- the guy that has started 5 playoff games for the jets. I mean i am pretty sure no quarterback in history of the franchise has started that many game in the playoffs. You are talking about the guy that leads the history of football in comp perct. The history, that mean all time( i know it is not everything, but it is pretty damn huge) You are talking about the guy that before last year had a better rating the mr brady ( i am not comparing the two, just stating the facts) chad pennington right- the guy that has maybe showed more heart then any jet every (appoligies to curtis) I am not saying he is a beast, but damn , i am sick and tired of people talking about him like he is a bum. HE is good enough to get it done. This is actual fact. He has done it in 3 diffrent seasons. Two years ago being one of them. Brett favre will not, i repeat will not come in and be the man he was, no chance in hell. I mean if this trade happens then i hope to god i am wrong. Lets hope i dont find out.

  36. ESPN is reporting that the Jets have offered 4th round pick, which could become a 2nd round pick based on Favre’s performance. Green Bay is asking Tampa Bay for a 3rd round pick plus a plus a player.

  37. John I….the answer is to put Tannebaum back to the accounting department or rather fire him, and go get ,like the Dolphins did by hiring Parcells, experienced people to run all football operations.
Woody likes to put his nose into it, so you need strong people to run things.
This FO definitely believes that the Jets fans are the most stupid fans in the leauge.

  38. i personally think parcells would get farve if he was running the jets…he got testaverde and he at least brought us to a championship game and he was no spring chicken at the time ( testaverde).

  39. pat d,
I wasnt comparing Favre to Bradshaw, I was simply saying Bradshaw is a dumb redneck, the same as Favre. I wish I was elitist, cause that would mean i make a lot of money, but I dont. Theres now way in hell he can learn the playbook in a month, and I still dont think they have enough money to trade for him. What does the FA’s agents they signed have anything to do with Favre?

  40. PS: and for those who claim that Favre has proved he can do it, yes in 1996 (12 years ago) with a SUPER-TEAM next to him. and then again with a SUPER-TEAM next to him lost to an underdog Denver team.

  41. One more thing. My last defence for chad.
4 legendary qbs and chad (these are lifetime stats)

    who is who

comp pct yds per pass pass/int
    63.0 7.2 42.3 #1
    61.4 7.0 30.4 #2
    65.6 7.2 34.8 #3
    63.2 7.5 38.7 #4
    59.4 7.3 33.2 #5
Look at them, they are all beasts. Now chad is NOT as good as the other 4. But still , the man can play. Take note on number 2 vs 3. Yup Chad is number 3 favre number 2. Beats him in all 3 catagories. People always say chad is a dink an dunk qb , which kinda is, but he gets as many yds per pass then 3 of these legends and beats favre. The jets will not be throwing the ball 35 times a game. They are a possesion game. Which is all about chad By the way the other 3 are #1 brady, #4 montana #5 marino. Chad just needs to stay healthy, when is has a line, he does this sometimes.

  42. Be careful what you wish for. Favre will use us for his own personal gains.

Yes he is/was a great QB, but can that transform into greatness for the Jets, I don’t think so, I think him coming here will only benefit Brett Favre, I think he will use us and make fools of us.

I think we have a good thing going here, and bringing him in now will only ruin it. If it had happened a month ago, I would be all for it, but to do it now, will only reek of desperation. We cannot possibly get him acclimated into our offense in time for him to do us any good. Pass on him play the guys we have, and if that doesn’t work strike a deal for Brady Quinn. Just my thoughts.

  43. Karmajaxx..I agree with you 100% with regard to Chad.
If he is protected he is much better than Favre. The fact that Favre is an iron man does not qualify him in my opinion as one of the best QBs in this league, despite the broken NFL records . The records were broken not because of efficiency ( productivity) but rather duration. He played a lot of years.

  44. As much as I want Favre on the team, as a Jet fan I am used to disappointment. I’m sure by the end of the day tomorrow we will hear how the Jets offer was better than Tampa, but Favre liked the fit in Tampa better. Somehow I still let myself think we have a chance though.

Anybody who thinks Chad is a better QB than Favre is delusional. Chad is a safe Qb who won’t beat himself, however he won’t beat the other team either. Favre is willing to take chances to win. I’m ready for a change.

  45. GIVE ME A BREAK!! ALL OF YOU, WE HAVE NOT WON ANYTHING SINCE ‘69….AND WE R GOING TO ARGUE ABOUT BRINGING HIM IN!! WHAT HAS ROBINSON, TODD, OBRIEN, EASON, NAGLE, ESIASION, ODONNELL, FOLEY, TESTEVERDE, PENNINGTON, CLEMENS, ETC…DONE FOR US?///

ANSWER: NOTHING! 2 AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES 1982 AND 1998..

WE HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE…LET’S DO IT!!!

  46. MS…you are not ready for change..You just wish to set up yourself for what you are used to, that is ….disappointment. What spectacular and beautiful disappointment will it be with Favre at the helm and $140 million in free agency.

  47. If they get Favre then we know the following:

    1. They don’t think Chad can lead the team to a SB
    2. They don’t think Clemens is ready now, if ever
    3. They think the rest of the team -is- ready

If the above is true, why not get Favre. Gives you a 2yr window to do something, if you fail then you get a young QB in the draft and start over. However, if the above is true, why would the Jets not have addressed QB more actively in the draft?

As long as the decision is fact-based and not a romantic ’sell some newspapers’ type decision, then I’m for it.

  48. Mets 62 …you forgot …Favre in your list.

  49. I guess i have one more pro chad comment in me. I am embarresed at the lack of support there has been for chad in the past. They guy is just as good of a leader as favre. Yes just as good. The only reason his teammates doubt him at times is his durability. Every single one of them would go to war with him. He is a winner, yes a winner. Before last year, which was a debacle beyond his control, he has won more then he has lost. Let me tell you something, that comment alone means everything for us. Listen , bottom line. We dont win 9 or 10 games everyyear, and our history is that making the playoffs means good year. Chad has and will do this if he stays healthy ( iknow, that is a big if) Chad has taking the jets to the playoffs 3 out of 6 years, (this included years where he didnt play much) Favre has taken the packers to the playoffs 5 out of the last 9.

  50. Mets 62- W

  51. Where you guys get the idea that Favre will take you to the Superbowl. This guy made it there 11 years ago with a SUPER-SUPER TEAM! He is 38.75 years old and plays his own playbook!
If GB had not made it to the NFC conference finals last year, no-one would be talking about Favre. This guy -the two yeras before last -had QB ratings of 70. In other words he was bad!!!
From where you get the idea that he will come here and will play like an all-star? actually this guy can ruin any chance this team may have to go to the SB. You are such CONSUMERS of junk.

  52. mets 62- GUess how many playoff games favre has one in the last 5 years, two. Same as chad. Favre is one of the more over rated qbs in the history of football. THis guy makes more crucial mistakes then any qb in history. I Mean if chads team lost at home to the giants last year with a team that one 13 games you would be calling for his head. He choked in that game just like he has done time and time again. The man makes mistakes, this is a fact. Even when he is good. IF we were the lions or someone else that might be wiling to throw the ball 40 times a game fine. We are not. He did not want to come here at first, why the freakin hell would you want him now. So based on your theory that the jets havnt won since 69 And favre won a superbowl 12 years ago, the bengals should be looking hard at him as well, i mean palmer ,what has he done. Where are his rings. The saints could use a guy with a ring, that brees guy has nothing. I mean, i am being sarcastic obviously , but what we have to lose is this- A good freakin year of football, playoffs hopefully, and one to build on towards the future with guys that want to be here. That to me is a lot.

  53. JP ….. With reagard to what this FO thinks about Chad, the problem is exactly their thinking. These are the same people who thought last year that Adrien Clarke was as good as Pete Kendall . You cannot trust them..
They inherited a team that went 10-6 and turn it around to 4-12. It was all their fault and now they try to scapegoat Chad.

  54. The Jets by their actions have already shown that they have no confidence in Chad — He will go down like a house of cards if he is still on the team Thursday night –

  55. Johnyy Styne… we do know by now that you are a crypto-PATSie fan. He did beat the hell out of you in Foxboro so shut up! This year he will beat you twice!!

  56. SAY WHAT U WANT, CHAD, FOLEY, ETC… DOES IT REALLY MATTER ANYMORE? FAVRE WILL GIVE US A CHANCE…IF IT WORKS, KUDOS TO US, IF NOT, WHAT DO WE HAVE TO LOSE….CHAD? KELLEN?..???

  57. I have to say, the worst part about the Jets isn’t their loosing seasons, and it’s not their QB situation, it’s their fans. What a bunch of classless jerks we are as a whole.
This becamne appearant last year in the first game of the season when we cheered Chad’s injury. It makes me ashamed, I’m embarassed for all of us.

Chad has always been great when he’s healthy period.
He is the most accurate QB of all time, he has several years left in him.
Brett on the other hand holds the record for most interceptions. Period.

If they sign this Brett it’ll be the grand finally of the draft blunders video next year. It’ll be the biggest mistake they ever make. It’s not difficult to see that it’s a terrible idea.
mangini is always harping about ball controll and turnovers, and now they want to sign the man who has ther most interceptions in the history of the game?
Lat year it was the Kendall situation, this year if they sign Brett I’ll have to say the problem with the Jets aside from their short memory fans is their front office.

A healthy Chad is significantly better than Brett period.

If the comment about the fans doesn’t pertain to you than ignore it. Although if it doesn’t you most likely know exactly what I mean.

  58. OH MY GOD. I HAVE BEEN A JET FAN SINCE SHEA. i CAN HONELSTLY TELL YOU I AM DISCUSTED. I HOPE TO GOD I AM WROND ABOUT THIS. WHY, WHY WHY, I DONT GET IT

  59. The problem is that a healthy Chad is both a rarity and not better than Brett Favre. Brett does have the most interceptions of any other QB. He also has the most wins, TDs and consecutive starts. He has only 1 losing season as an NFL starter. Also, since his 2004 shoulder injury, Chad has been an INT machine and has also thrown poorly-timed INTs. The difference is that Brett matches his INTs with the kind of big play ability that this team hasn’t had since 1998. Favre’s arm may be the most powerful in NFL history and there’s no pass that he can’t make on the field. Plus no QB in NFL history gets more out of his TE. Favre to Keller could become the AFC’s deadliest QB-TE combo.

Football Outsiders ranked Favre’s 2007 behind only Brady and Peyton. He made the Pro Bowl, passed for over 4,000 yards, had the highest completion pct. of his career and the highest yards per attempt for his career. Football Outsiders ranks Favre and Elway, by FO’s stats, as the best 2 QBs of the modern era and note that Favre has had, using their statistical metrics, one below average season in his 16 years as a starter, and that was in 1999. Here’s the article:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3276536

I like Chad, said all off-season that he was the better choice than KC and, often, I was Chad’s only diehard defender on this blog. But, Chad is not in Favre’s league as a QB. Their careers have overlapped as starters since 2002. Favre has been in 3 Pro Bowls and has had 1 losing season. Chad has no Pro Bowls and 3 losing seasons. Chad has missed games in 4 seasons, Favre in none. Chad has thrown 20 or more TDs in 1 season, back in 2002; Favre has done it in 5 seasons. Chad has thrown for over 3,300 yards in 1 season; Favre in all 6. And, if you look at Chad’s TD-INTs, it’s 80-55; Favre is 155-116…Chad’s ratio is only slightly better and skewed by Chad’s 2002, which was by far Chad’s best season and Favre’s 2005, which was by far Favre’s worst INT season. I’m saying this because if you start in 2003, Chad goes down to 58-49; Favre is 128-100…Favre’s percentage is better and I’ve included his WORST INT season. The fact is that Favre’s the far superior QB. That’s no knock on Chad, Favre may be the best ever.
