Favre Trade Terms

by Bassett on August 7th, 2008 at 7:12 am

Here’s the terms of the deal, via Michael David Smith as he wrote in the NY Sun.

The terms of the trade state that the Jets will send the Packers a fourth-round draft pick, which can become a third-round pick if Favre plays 50% of the Jets’ offensive snaps, and a second-round pick if Favre plays 70% of the snaps and the Jets make the playoffs.

The Jets would owe the Packers a first-round pick if Favre takes 80% of the snaps and the Jets make it to the Super Bowl. If the Jets do get to the Super Bowl with Favre, giving up next year’s 31st or 32nd pick will have turned out to be the most successful trade in franchise history. That possibility is what this trade was about.

Tannenbaum does love his conditional deals … doesn’t he?

I’m very surprised that we gave up so much.

It’s an absolute lock that it’s a 1st day pick – despite the fact that he could be bad and leave after one year. The way I see it, with the Jets moving into that new stadium and trying to justify their PSL’s to season ticket holders, they decided that the cachet of “new york jets qb, brett favre” was the best way to do it – and once the trade seemed like a possibility from both a packers/favre point of view, they over spent to get him.

What am I supposed to do with my #4 Glen Foley jersey now?

  3. avatar fonzie/naples says:

This deal is pure desperation to Justify fan abuse (psl). We are good enough for 10-6 and the playoffs WITHOUT him and now this old man will get the credit for all the work the team put in this offseason. I guess all Farve ints. this year will be less painful than Chads. What a disgrace for all the BS “team building through the draft” from Tangini.

  4. avatar frank says:

Gave up too much? The goal is to make the Playoffs and compete for the SB! I would have sold my left nut for a SB run. Now all we need to give up is a 1st rounder if it happens. This is a good trade with fair compensation.

  5. avatar 16G Mike says:

Obviously these two previous posts are either Spygate fans or living under rocks. We’ve got quite a few first day picks on the team, and still didn’t have a quarterback that made the HC confidant, nor scared anyone in the league. Now we do. This makes every reciever better, and our running game lethal. first day pick be damned, I want to enjoy my time at the swamp.

  6. avatar Lou says:

I am not so sure this is a really bad thing here. I will explain.

I am sure the jets know there is a chance that he will not be back next year but it gives Clemens one more year to learn under a Hall of Fame Quarterback. If Clemens is not the answer it might give Ainge some time to get his stuff together.

Now for camp the mustard on the ball from Clemens and Favre will be somewhat the same. Receivers will have to get used to the ball speeds from Favre which will play to Clemens favor.

If we make the superbowl I would definetely give away a 1st round pick. Think about it given the choice would you do it? I don’t care about losing a draft pick as much as I care about winning a superbowl.

Brett plays with alot of emotion and plays like a kid in High School. He will bring excitement to the team and I think they will enjoy playing football…

This is going to be a great year for the Jets…

  7. avatar frank says:

We need some desperation on this team. We havent won in 40 years! Sometimes, desperation is a good thing for a franchise who has done nothing. Brett Favre was not even born the last time the Jets won the SB!

  8. avatar R in CT says:

    fonzie/naples –

    I agree 100%!

After dumping guys like Abraham, Mawae and Kendall under the “we’re building a foundation of hardworking, blue collar, team-first guys through the draft,” this feels like a sucker punch of sorts. Bringing in a self-absorbed me-first guy who does what he wants on the field reeks of desperation and wanting a big name so they can push $5,000 PSLs down the fans’ throats.

I can’t complain too much about the compensation — a conditional 4th rounder for a guy coming off a 4,000-yard season is a decent deal. And I can’t argue that he doesn’t upgrade the talent at QB. Still, I just worry about the ramifications if it doesn’t work out.

  9. avatar fonzie/naples says:

    frank:
How many more wins than 10-6 do you think this guy brings? If you think this self serving past his prime hypocrite can carry the jets to the SB why couldn’t he carry his beloved GB the last four years?

  10. avatar NewGiantsFan says:

The Jets have made a dumb move. People are acting like we traded for 35 year old Brett Favre. This is a 38 year old in the most physical sport on earth. Ridiculous!!!! We would have went to the playoffs with out him. Sending a 4th round pick which seems to always work out great for the Jets was dumb dumb dumb! The Packers got more for Favre an out of his prime QB than the Raiders got for Moss the most dominat receiver in the game at his prime. THE JETS SUCK and will always suck and I am no longer a fan. Thank God I didn’t pay for those PSL’s This move will go down as one of the dumbest in Jets history. You needed a QB you should have drafted Brady Quinn last year. Wasted a 2nd on Clemans an experiment and took a shot at the bum and didn’t draft Kentuckys one man team Andre Woodson last year. Tannebaum this is an Isaih Thomas move. Mortgaged our future to rent a fossilized QB for two years. Anyone who celebrates this move is an idiot! It ruins your cap flexibility! This is not how you make a QB. You have to find a raise a QB like Romo, Brady, any Manning, Rothlisberger any of the QB’s at Cleveland. This is Montana in KC, This Moon in Minnesota, THIS IS JUST PLAIN DUMB!!!!!!

  11. avatar NewGiantsFan says:

BRETT CAN’T EVEN GROOM A NEXT QB!!!!!! DUMB ASS MOVE. I AM SO PISSED!!!!! So happy I didn’t buy my season tickets to watch Michael Jordan play for the Washington Wizards and just make the playoffs and mortgage the teams future.

  12. avatar NewGiantsFan says:

    IDIOTS!!!!!

  13. avatar fonzie/naples says:

    R in CT:
You said it!! I love the Jets since 1967 but i feel really disgusted with our front office. Same feeling I had when Leon Hess announced his was moving the team to New Jersey. You are right about the sucker punch.

  14. avatar jetsfan says:

chads gone… bretts in and this give kellen one more year to learn under the master

  15. avatar AlanB says:

What a bunch of whiny crybabies! Maybe they’re just Chad fan boys. Get over it. Chad is good QB and a classy guy. He will be missed, but Favre is better than him even at 38. Suck it haters! I have a new religion. I have downed the koolade and worship at the altar of number 4. I’m going to order my jersey now!

  16. avatar D. Greene says:

they should have kept chad to help develop clemens. How do I watch the game tonight when im in virginia?

  17. avatar C$ says:

true, farve is no peyton manning but he is better than chad and KC. I thought all the attention Farve always got was annoying and now its going to be worse but I can deal because he is an upgrade at QB. If the jets did not get Farve and Chad and KC played poorly which they probably would have everyone would have been crying that we did not make this move when we had the chance.

  18. avatar Tim from Boston says:

    Was Otto Graham not available?

  19. avatar Matt Lafflin says:

We suck. This is a terrible move.
Mangini and company are always talking about how important it is to not turn the ball over, then they sign Favre?
    A month before the season?
This is a business decision folks, a ploy to sell those PSL’s.

The Jets front office sucks, Tannenbaum is an iddiot, and Mangini belongs in a film room.

I hope the don’t win a game this year. They talk about values and all this other BS, but the front office are a sleazy.

I’ve been a Jet fan my whole life, loosing years never made me like them any less. But I don’t know about this, I’m not excited for this season anymore.

  20. avatar klecko71 says:

new giants fan….congrats….on clearly the lamest post in the history of this site.

the guy threw for 4000 yards last year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“he isnt 35 he is 38″…….at 35 he threw for 4088 yards with 30 td’s and 17 picks….. at 38 he threw for 4155 with his highest completion rate of his career and 28 tds and 15 picks.

how can ANYONE think we were good enough at the QB to predict 10-6!!!! we might have started the season with a 32 year old with no arm!!!!!!

favre will play 2 years….and it gives kellen and ainge a chance to learn from one of the best QB’s to ever play the game.

an isiah thomas move???? wow thats a tough one =)
i agree with your brady quinn point, but that would have been admitting 100% failure with clemens…..and before u jump on me…getting favre doesnt admit 100% failure with clemens….THIS IS BRETT FAVRE.

would love to read ur posts if we didnt make the move…and clemens struggled a bit early…if he won the job that is over a 32 year old who cant throw a simple $$#@@ out pattern…..

u would be calling for the jets to draft a QB in the next draft…we would have to pay him a ton of $$ b/c he would be a top 5 pick b/c we would be 4-12 again!!!!

i will take favre for 2 years….and it wont kill us with the cap…relax on that point.

“this is montana in KC”….hope so smart ass…he took them within 1 game of the super bowl!!!!!!! and in his 2nd and last season in KC…he threw for 3200 yards on a team that didnt exactly air it out.

good luck rooting for the giants…..u are one year too late for that bandwagon pal…..

wonder what week u will be back praising the move….week 2 after we beat the pats??? =)

  21. avatar klecko71 says:

and the pack getting more for an out of prime favre vs what the raiders got for in his prime moss??

favre is close to “out of prime” yes….but u cant say that after the year he had last year. if he was 20-20 last year and the pack were 8-8 and he showed signs of age….then yes….

and as far as moss…..THEY GOT A 4TH B/C THE GUY WAS A KNOWN ASS#$$@ WHO ADMITTED HE ONLY PLAYS WHEN HE WANTS!!!!!!!! AND WAS OFF HIS WORST FEW YEARS EVER!!!!! hey we all knew he would kick ass with the pats….but how come nobody else offered more then a 4th for him??? B/C HE IS STILL THE BIGGEST JERK IN THE NFL!!! and most teams didnt want to take the risk that if he or his new team started badly…he would continue to be an ass!!!!

how u use these 2 trades in comparison….is pathetic.
one deal is COMPLETELY different then the other.

and again…..good luck with the giants bandwagon.

hey dakar….these are “just my thoughts” =)

  22. avatar vinnywasthebest says:

Wow, great passion in these posts. As a looooooong time jets fan, i will NEVER trade in my colors ever if they resucitated Ryan Leaf. Heres why it could be a bad deal: Brett plays the whole year 25 tds 26 ints. We go 8-8. To hell with the pick, were stacked with young talent. Its a “tread water” year. But the upside of maybe, just maybe sticking it to the pats and the giants and if not winning the sb, but going to the AFC championship game against the Colts or Jags, wouldnt you take that? Think back to 98 when Vinny (“washed up” , “1st pick bust”) took us to the AFC championship. Think of how you felt when we were up 10-0 on the Broncos. I felt the best ive ever felt. If theres a chance for that, ill tradea conditional pick and run over Chad with my ’94 Saab. And if youve read my posts, i defended chad to the end. WE ARE ON THE MAP NOW BABY!!! Belichick start coching up those D-backs, were comin for ya!!!!!

  23. avatar No2QBweveevrhad says:

Are all these people really Jets fans? It’s a great move. Yes, Favre is not a young pup anymore but we’ve upgraded at the most important position in the game. Great move and certainly worth the risk. Joe Willie is No. 1, now Brett No. 2.

  24. avatar fafa says:

What future did we mortgage? One pick for a shot at the Super Bowl? One pick that may or may not turn into a decent player?

  25. avatar Najy says:

I think some people on this post dont know what they are talking about….

Brett Favre is the best thing to happen to the Jets this off season. Both our Qbs suck horribly.

Some of you guys are soo negative its sickening..

For once, why dont you guys try to think that our coaches and FO want to win games????

Mangini is good on his words.. From the moment that he became a Jets coach, he said in his opening press confrence taht he wants to build a winning team that all the fans can be proud of..

I am very proud of the FO becuase it shows me that they are trying. They know that we sucked last year (4-12) and they went out and effectively targeted every weakness that we had last year.

Give me a break guys!!! GO JETS baby. Cant wait to see number 4 in the uniform.

  26. avatar klecko71 says:

fafa…najy….nice to hear from the intelligent among us.

  27. avatar klecko71 says:

and u too vinny…..as ur name points out, we did pretty well with an old QB a few years back =) and he wasnt exactly brett favre when we got him!!

  28. avatar Jonathan says:

    3 things

-Don’t stick a fork in Kellen just yet. Vince, Leinart, and Cutler were drafted a round ahead of him, have way more starts, and are still unfinished products.
-Just like Boston fans forget about the Yanks when they add someone: they do it, too (Adalius, Moss, Welker, Seau), and our home-grown core is what will set us apart (Nick, Brick, Leon, Cotch, Dustin, Vernon, Harris, Revis, Rhodes, even Nugent).
-Just because Favre isn’t as good as he was doesn’t mean he isn’t as good as what we had. Sure he’s in decline phase, but he’s likely still about 2 years away from falling to Chad’s level.

  29. avatar Najy says:

    Jonathan,

Am I the only one that watched football last year??

Brett came off of an MVP type season. He was runner up for MVP and 1 game away from the Super Bowl!! And he still hasnt missed a game in his career….

How is he declining??? Please, someone explain that to me..

  30. avatar Jonathan says:

    read again. this time slowly.
i’m making the case that, while he’s soon to be 39, he’s got gas left in the tank.

  31. avatar Najy says:

    Let me try that again…

  32. avatar Najy says:

    Let me try that again…

  33. avatar Najy says:

Just because Favre isn’t as good as he was doesn’t mean he isn’t as good as what we had. Sure he’s in decline phase, but he’s likely still about 2 years away from falling to Chad’s level.

…He is not in decline phase tho.. And he is as good as he ever was.. Age aint nothing but a number for Favre man..

  34. avatar Tim from Boston says:

Think Deanna will go to Gate D?

  35. avatar Jonathan says:

    This isn’t the movie Cocoon.
Just because we’re used to Vinny T.’s loose skin and old b—s doesn’t mean that 39 is young.

  36. avatar vinnywasthebest says:

39 isnt young at all.Favre had a good o-line around him in the past and took less hits over his career than others (McNair) and can be healthy to play for us for 2 years. As fans (New York fans) we need to give the dude some slack (media this means you too) and let him play his game. The o-line and running game should get us started, and by midseason we will gel nicely. Dont forget we have an early bye week, this can help Favre catch up if needed. With a pass rush (didnt have that last year right?) we can stay in games with Favre, Chad Clemens or whoever. BE HAPPY FOR ONCE GODDAMMIT!!!!!!!! IM TRYING.

  37. avatar Jonathan says:

I concur. Let’s allow ourselves to have fun with this.
We seem to suffer from Ike Turner-itis.

  38. avatar Rich says:

I don’t know that I buy that this is a PSL ploy. No matter how lousy the Jets have been for 40 years, they always sell out. And management knows it. Even if many fans say no to PSLs, they would get other fans to pony up, with or without Farve. I do agree with vinnywasthebest–I’m trying to be happy for once. Not always easy. Might as well enjoy the ride–wherever it leads us.

  39. avatar 16G Mike says:

Kleck 71 – not only is Klecko my favorite jet, your posts are classic and on point.
Rich – even though this was a move with the PSL in mind, who cares. We benefit. I was going to pay some form of PSL anyway, now at least I might see a completion over 25 yards!
This makes tonights game/the season much more interesting and hopefull

  40. avatar klecko71 says:

    16G mike….i appreciate the compliment.

klecko 73 was taken by someone in blog land…i was born in 71 so thats the best i could do. =)

pretty frustrating to read a post from a guy who claims he is now a giant fan……i am sure hoping its just a name!!!

and to compare the favre trade to moss in terms of what was given up was absurd…..and the isiah thomas reference….while very funny….also was pretty moronic.

already going to the opener in miami….and will make sure i am at the home opener vs the pats.

maybe bassett can get something going with people who might go to the dolphins game….to maybe meet up in the pkng lot before the game….

flights are BEYOND cheap…i am leaving saturday coming back monday for 89$ each way on jet blue….
cousin has fish seasons hooking me with 2 tickets…i would bet there are ticks available right now thru stub hub etc….

  41. avatar klecko71 says:

    oh and hey newgiantsfan…

ANDRE WOODSON???? u have the guts to call us out for not taking “kentuckys one man team andre woodson”.

    he….is….toilet…..

    certainly not an NFL QB……..

    thankfully i just re-read ur post…and noticed that “gem” of a rant….jesus…..

  42. avatar klecko71 says:

and jonathan is 100000% on point….with the examples of cutler, leinart, and vince…

all 3 have had waaay more snaps then clemens…on teams that are more talented….

and they still have some growing to do…cutler is the best of the 3…and he looks like he will be the real deal…

gotta give clemens time…this year might have been the start of that…but when u have a chance to get favre..u do it…then hand it over to clemens in 2 years…
