The Brett Favre Media Assault: When Will It End?
“In the blink of an eye, my whole life changed.” — Kanye West, Through The Wire
An interesting observation from a controversial figure, to say the least, but poignant for the current situation of the New York Jets and Jets fans.
Let’s face it, Thursday night (or morning, depending on your point of view) everything changed for Jets fans. For at least the next 20 weeks, this team is going to be front and center in the football and sporting universe, for better or for worse. As we’ve already seen, the media coverage accompanying Brett Favre has been suffocating, intense and unyielding. It’s become unbearable to those uninterested or uninitiated in the Green and White, and even to some of you who are.
So my question to you as fans, is this:
Are you sick of it? Will you get sick of Brett Favre?
I understand that Jets fans, and I include myself in this group, have wanted the Jets to matter for so long that it will take a great deal for me to tire of the Jets being a news story, but there are things to consider.
- It’s a long season and that no matter what happens, this team is going to be one of the spotlight teams of the NFL for the 2008 season.
- If the Jets are good, there’s a good possibility the team will be blown up and stroked as much as some of the teams Jets fans have despised in the past for their love affair with mainstream media.
- If the Jets are bad, well, then things are likely to get out of hand very fast–both in the media and in the locker room.
- At the end of the season, regardless of how the team finishes, there will be the inevitable “What will Favre do?” questions berating the organization.
So what do you think? What will it take for you tire of the Brett Favre media assault?

I think it’s great that we have Favre. I never get enough of hearing about anything New York Jets. That being said I have found the coverage of Favre funny at times. Especially wacthing him get off the plane like it was Air Force One.
-
well you know its been a long time since the jets got this much media attention a really long it sometimes makes me feel happy but also sad because that means this is what we had to do, we had to get a QB more important than our team
oh and if we do bad which is a possiblity i think still will have the itch to play i think the only thing that might get him retired is a SB or 2 bad years in NYC

I’m not going to get tired of it whether this season turns out to be great or if it turns out bad. Either way it’s going to be really interesting.
There is four games this season that are just going to be huge no matter what, the Phins and the Pats.
It’s funny, even when the Jets were good they got very little media attention, so this is good for the Jets.
Although this will likely give berth to a bunch of fair weather, front runner fans if it turns out the way we’re all hoping it will. And that’s what’s going to be tough to deal with. -
After years of ESPN showing two seconds of Jet game highlights, I’m happy to see them in the limelight. Bear in mind it will only last if they win. I think too little has been made of the other improvements the Jets made like bringing in Alan Faneca, Kris Jenkins, Calvin Pace & Damien Woody. If they win it will be all about Favre and that’s wrong.

So after years and years of:
Cowboys 24/7
Terrell Owens 24/7
Pacman Jones 24/7
Jeremy Shockey 24/7
Michael Strahan 24/7
Tiki Barber 24/7
Steelers 24/7
Pats 24/7
Dolphins 24/7
so…
The Jets and Brett Favre are entitled to their 15 minutes and I’m enjoying all of it. -
You’re probably right Matt, there will be some people jumping on the band wagon. Overall it’s great to have a little attention for the Jets though. Attention for maybe a playoff victory or three, would be nice too. I’m just saying, wouldn’t that be the ultimate.
Here’s a thought, once the season starts Favre will have played for the first two teams to win Super Bowl’s. He took the Packers back after all those years, wouldn’t it be Ironic to do the same for the Jets. That would certainly add to his iconic stature. Just a thought.

you know i know this is a fantasy but what if the jets win the SB
I will bet you good money GB trio that good rid of favre are all fired but that is if the jet win and for the record i would trade 3 draft picks for a SB birth -
Hey, I hope that he has cleansed himself of vicodin and liquor. He did have a problem with that you know.

Ultimately whether the Favre experiment works out or not, it has already paid dividends. Brett has inspired the entire franchise, the fan base, and most of the players. Two weeks ago nobody was talking about what kind of seasons Jericho or Thomas Jones or LC were going to have until the Jets got a QB who can positively affect their play. Media attention is good. Players want media attention, especially good players. It inspires them to preform at a higher level.
Its time for us to develop a new identity, a badass one. What kind of message does it send to the fans if the Jets spend millions of dollars revamping the front line and the defense, only to have Noodle Arm through it 5 mph down the middle so LC and Jericho can get crushed?
Chad is only a “leader” because hes a model citizen not a model QB, there’s a big difference. Brett lets his arm lead.Management has finally shown a commitment to their fans and all of this attention is awesome, we deserve it. Don’t you think?

I am happy that the jets have finally made ESPN. last year we were in the last 2 minutes right b4 the top ten plays on Sportscenter, and now there is green and white all over ESPN from the get go. I love turning on 1050 am and hearing complete coverage about our team, and thanks to the addition of Favre, we are no longer the ‘ginger step son’ of NYC sports, and are finally thrusted into the limelight after too many years of delays.

Jets 24/7 is all good
-
Green Bay offered Favre $20 million to sit on his a$$. Instead he decided to play for the NY Jets. The Jet players are going to love playing with this guy.
-
pat d
you right about that but what GB did it was like spitting on his face
But Favre could ntot except that money even if he wanted to cuz that would hurt his image , if he excepted the money everybody would have though he came back for the money
And if favre plays this year and next he will make 25 million anyway and if he stayed retired he would ahve made 20 million in the course of 10 years
-
nyckage
And your point is Favre doesn’t have something to prove.

pat D
i dint say favre is a greedy bum
we all know the reason why he came here its to play football and win games its not the money i know but mentionin that 20 million deal is nothing compared to what is gonna earn these next two years -
Hnoestly, I was tired of Favremania the second he started reconsidering retirement. Then I got rejuvinated when he got traded to Gang Green. Now I’m tired of all the media coverage again. Let’s just let him figure out the system, make adjustments and play some damn football.

If you live in NYC, you have no choice but to accept the plethora of Favre coverage. Every single newspaper (including the dozens upon dozens that are not the Post, Times, Daily News and Newsday) will constantly have a column or article about Favre. And I am certainly OK with that. This town has been filled with A-Rod, Isaiah Thomas, Willie Randolph, Tiki Barber, Steinbrenner, the Dolans, Jeter, Coughlin, David Wright and others for so long (even during our 10-6 season) that it practically evens out. I think the attention on Favre will not hinder the team, in that Favre will handle it gracefully and it will inspire players whose names appear below the fold to do all they can to get their names in the headlines. On a Mangini team, that’s a good thing.
Regarding the bandwagoners, I think Bassett and company should compose a random list of questions that we true fans can answer and, in turn, pose to any bandwagoner onsite to remind them of what they are.
For instance, I bet a bandwagoner couldn’t answer any of the following questions:
1. What’s the name of the Jets fullback?
2. Who was the Jets’ 2nd pick in the draft in 2008 and 2007?
3. What QB on the Jets once wore #4 as a starter back in the 90s?
4. Who was Keyshawn Johnson’s first QB on the Jets?
5. For what University did Ray Lucas play before joining the Jets?
6. Who won the last time the Jets and Packers played each other?
7. Who is Fireman Ed?
8. What’s the players’ nickname for Eric Mangini?
9. From what country is Ben Graham?
10. Mike Nugent and Nick Mangold are alumni of what college football giant? -
StuytownKC, Love the questions! I agree all true fans know the answers to those. At least the ones who have been following the team in the last few years. Hence weeding out the bandwagoneers. Depending on the age of the fan, you could go back to the 60′s, 70′s or 80′s to really see how much people know. I have always been a proponent of the notion that if you really love the Jets, you should know your history.
1) Who was the1st member to sign with the team when they were the Titans?
2) Who was MVP of SB III, but what RB should have been?
3) Who was the most prolific WR the Jets ever had from the late 70′s throughout the 80s?
4) Who was the first All Pro RB the Jets had?
5) What “NFL reject” CB caught one of the many key INTs in SBIII? -
The more Jets coverage the better. My biggest concern is the last one mentioned. If the Jets make a run this year but fall short, I don’t want to be held hostage by the “will he, won’t he?” soap opera.
Rather be worried about that than who they are going to take with the 5th pick, though.

Sigh, all this Brett coverage is making me long for Michael Vick…. and whether Mike Piazza and Jeff Garcia are gay or not (..not that there is anything WRONG with that!) lol
-
bubbybrister/shovelpass,
your right i cant wait till M. Vick comes back then all the media attention goes back to the falcons honestly i dont like all this media attention you probably thinking we finally we got the media attention that we were missing for years but come on what did we had to do to get that attention, we had to to get a QB that is bigger than us , alot of these dumb bandwagon fans who know nothing about the jets except favre they are a bunch of idiots , and i presume we are all real fans if we come here everyday and say are opinions in this blog
-
I’m truly loving all this front page stuff .. keep it coming !
We’re finally entering the club via the VIP entrance.
GO Jets! It’s going tp be a fun season, lots of great young talent !

I’m guaranteed to be sick of Favre at some point this season.
If we do well, all the credit will be given to him and the “story” will be about how Favre took a ragtag bunch of nobody’s to however far they get. And of course, along the way, we’ll constantly have to listen to the endless banter about favre, and how incredible he is at his age, and how he’s coping with NY, and what he thinks about his new teammates, and how much he probably wishes he was in green bay, – instead of relevant discussions to how the team is playing and what they’re doing well. And finally, there will be the interminable questions about about “is this his last year?”…
and if he sucks, I’ll be sick of him then too.

If and only if it gets in the way of his play and I don’t see that happening — Brett Favre will allow the entire team to excel and I will love it –
