Watch: Favre Runs a Lap at Camp

by Bent on August 10th, 2008 at 3:53 pm

Nice to see Mangini isn’t giving his new prize asset any preferential treatment. Hopefully that will be the last time he and Mangold botch a snap.

In the meantime, check out Cimini’s blog details some impressive hook-ups from Favre to Cotchery, including this one:

Toward the end of practice, Favre launched a 75-yard TD pass to Cotchery. The amazing thing about this play was that CB David Barrett actually had decent coverage. There was only a small window, and he found it with a pass that traveled about 65 yards in the air.

Barrett with decent coverage? That IS amazing. (Just kidding).

Cimini’s blog also discusses Chad’s first interview as a Dolphin. He says he’s going to be “a sponge”. Only Chad could strive to become something even softer than he is. (Just kidding – again).

NOTE: Jason K. sent this in over the weekend, as he was the one who filmed this … thanks Jason!

well m glad favre is being treated like everyone else but what i found funny was as soon as the fumbled nick automatically took of his helmet and toopk a lap it took a while for him to understadn so he sprinted to where nick ran up to and jooged wit him

oh yea barrett with good coverage thats a joke right well even when that guy is in good coverage he cant stop a guy look cotchery

oh i expect CP to learn his new playbook before favre learns his , after all chad is pretty damn smart

  2. avatar kc says:

is it JUST ME,or is ANYONE ELSE absolutely SICK and TIRED of laveranues coles CRYING ALL THE TIME ABOUT SOMETHING! at first he was COMPLAINING that he was only gonna make TEN MILLION DOLLARS this year when he is CLEARLY not even in the TOP TEN wide recievers in this LEAGUE! and NOW,he wont talk to media and stands BY HIMSELF away from the rest of THE TEAM on the sideline like a TWO year old! I can talk/type about this ALL day,but i wont waste another second on this spoiled ,washed up

  3. avatar Johnny Styne says:

Cut Coles now — This is his last year in the League anyway due to Chad –

  4. avatar nyckage says:

    Kc

you are right coles is being a drama queen he is one of the guys that loves CP i know we miss him but dont divide the locker room or we will fail in this season

he has been a dram queen this entire season complaining about not getting the ball enough, saying he’s tired of running clearing routes for cotchery , and w ecant forget about his contract dispute

he is being a baby and should be glad because now he can go long and actually expect the ball to be there , also the ball will get to him so fast he will be able to do something after the catch

Again im not saying CP is a bad QB but coles has to move on or he will be the reason we will suck

  5. avatar ED says:

Go to the well again and try to send Coles to GB for someone Brett knows a little. Coles for Ruvell Martin and a fifth in 09. Clears cap space also. Great post Bassett. We are on our way.

  6. avatar ED says:

    I mean Bent!

  7. avatar Brandon "You're With Me"riweather says:

nope, not sick of coles. the guy doesn’t want to do interviews with the press 48 hrs after his best friend on the team was cut? good. i don’t care. screw the press.

And his contract is for 11 million over the next 2 years, you tard.

  8. avatar kc says:

    hey brandon…watch your mouth son.

  9. avatar Nikolas says:

Jets fans… don’t forget that Coles is the players’ representative and Mangini had to go to Florida this summer to beg him in order to get the team back that he and Tannenbaum lost last season. Coles, as you see, is not sweating in training camp. He appears to have a lot of influence and leverage.

If Coles is unhappy so is a good portion of the team, raising the possibility of a divided locker-room.

Favre has the credentials and the character to win it back, but if he is perceived by the players as a 3-month rental, plus his story with Javon Walker, then they will not pledge allegiance to the “Favre” of the U.S of America.

If this are more or less the facts then trading Coles is a possibility!
But trading Coles will it make things better or even worst?
    Great management, Let’s Go Tangini.

Brandon I do share your feelings. Screw the press..they use our team with of course the blessings of our FO to sell papers, commercials, and bull..it
They do not give a blip about real football fans……just fans who like entertainment.

  10. avatar Drew says:

Great comment on Barrett’s coverage……. A little over the edge on the Pennington comment. As usual feunny as hell though!!

  11. avatar Bent says:

Having guaranteed the last two years of Coles contract, cutting him or trading him is NOT an option. It would put us over the cap by almost 6m.

The only way they could even do that would be to release Barrett and Barton/Ellis/several other players at the same time (and it would create a ton of dead cap in 2009).

So, it’s not an option. If Coles is a problem, we have to put up with it. Let’s just hope he won’t be.

  12. avatar Brandon "You're With Me"riweather says:

KC – watch your own. if you want to post inflammatory remarks, expect some in return. next time, try to actually know something about anything before you start typing.

  13. avatar kc says:

my “infalammitory” remarks werent to anyone on this page.YOU made it personal.

  14. avatar kc says:

for the record i agree with “screwing” the press and I never said anything about TRADING/RELEASING him.go back and read my first comment again if you cant remember what i said.as far as his contract goes,i made a mistake…oops sorry!

  15. avatar Nikolas says:

Coles wants to force a trade possibly to Miami. But Bent…can you explain why it would put us 6m over the cap?
The other thing that I have noticed is that many Jets Fans do not understand how strong the bonds between the players are. The players have learned and been trained to play for each other , there is a Brotherhood, not only within the team but also across teams. The Javon Walker story carries much more water to them than to the typical fan.
The GB players did not care much when Favre left. No one stood out as Coles does for Chad. Isn’t strange that a legend like Favre did not have players coming out for him?
If Coles stays with the team, I do not see how the locker-room will not be divided. Maybe if Tannenbaum and Manginni kiss his..ss all day long can work, but I doubt it.

  16. avatar kc says:

he’s STILL WAY OVERPAID for not even being the BEST WIDERECIEVER ON OUR TEAM!

  17. avatar sirjase says:

ummmm. did anyone see coles and favre laughin on the sidelines the other night. i agree with my boy kc. coles is a baby and needs to get his [no profanity please] outa chads arse… personally with all our young talent , do we need him that bad. i dont think so. i read today on the jets site how brett and gericho hooked up a few times on head turnin plays. thats gonna be bretts man. watch. not to mention our under rated tight end baker and the next all star tight end keller. you heard it here first i think keller is gonna be huge for us this year. brett loves throwin to tight ends and keller will be one of the best. so check out this scenario. gericho will be our big play reciever. keller and baker will be also but gericho will be our deep threat as will clowney and stuckey. brad smith, if he gets playin time at reciever will make a few big catches here and there. as for coles. he will be exactly what he was with chad. he’ll catch those 5 yard out routes and 10 yard slants. DO WE REALLY NEED HIM OR CARE WHAT HE THINKS. dont get me wrong coles is an awesome receiver and could have a huge year , but if he doesnt i think the jets will be just fine. JUST FINE. dont you????

  18. avatar sirjase says:

hey nick . you should know what your talkin about before sayin anything . there were alot players wantin brett back , on bretts side and did express them selves. they were also told from the organization not to comment to much on the sitatation. brett made most of those players who they are today… AGAIN DO WE REALLY NEED COLES. i do not think coles with effect the team in anyway. the jets want to win. the team wants to win as does coles but if he cant accept the fact that chad is gone and now BRETT FAVRE is your qb, somthin mentall is wrong with him. trade him to miami. AGAIN, DO WE REALLY CARE?????

  19. avatar Nikolas says:

    Name …ONE Player!

  20. avatar Bent says:

“if you want to post inflammatory remarks, expect some in return.”

No…if you want to post inflammatory remarks, expect a warning that any future such remarks will be deleted, even those given in response to other insulting comments. Play nice, guys…please?

kc – I know you didn’t say about trading or releasing him, that comment was aimed at the posters that did after you. Where did you get the information that Coles was ignoring teammates etc? Do you have a link? FWIW Cimini said he sat out part of Saturday’s pratice with an injury to his leg.

Finally…to explain the Coles cap situation, he was due to get $11m over the next two years, but none of it was guaranteed. Theoretically, the Jets could have cut him at that stage with no real cap consequences.

When they guaranteed the remaining $11m, this changed everything. Remember when you cut or trade a player, all of the guaranteed money is brought forward to the current year for cap purposes. So by cutting him, his cap number for the year would increase from $6m to $12m, which since the Jets are already pretty much at the cap limit, would therefore put them over the cap (and if they didn’t get under by 4pm the next day – the only way of doing this being cutting several other guys as mentioned above, they’d lose several draft picks etc).

(NB – for completeness, I’d add that there would also be $1m of dead cap space in 2009 if he were cut or released, representing the final 1/5 of his signing bonus when he rejoined the Jets).

This assumes nothing is written into his contract where he would forego the guaranteed money in a situation like this, but that is pretty unlikely and would be a nightmare to try to sort out during the post-June period (although, in the absence of any official reports, I don’t actually expect that the reality is anything like what was portrayed above).

  21. avatar Nikolas says:

sirjase…you do not know what you are talkin about!
If you do not like discussion and opinion then you are in the wrong place.Entertain yourself ! There is “American” Idol on TV.

  22. avatar Nikolas says:

Good Explanation ..Brett. I know that the $12 million would all count on this year cap if cut…, but what if there is a trade with similar salaries?

  23. avatar subwayfare says:

Coles is an emotional guy and emotions are often irrational. As of halfway through last year Chad wasn’t even starting and it was clear his Jet career was shaky. And Coles still agreed to the 11 mil guarantee to stay. It doesn’t make sense that he’s suddenly shocked it didn’t work out for Chad in NY. And LC is not totally blameless, either, when it comes to putting business and self interest ahead of other concerns. That’s just the nastier side of NFL biz.

Having said that, the guy has always seemed to put those issues behind him when he steps between the lines. Until I see that change I’m not going to be worried about his performance or him leading a locker room revolt. It’s not in his best interest. Same for any potential locker room mutineers.

It’s totally reasonable to assume some people will be upset with a big change like that and take a little time to warm to the new guy. So be it. Favre’s a big enough boy to handle it and his charisma, desire to win and effort will win over any haters in the locker room, if not on this board.

The funny thing to me is that the guy who will get past the drama about “dumping” Chad the fastest is…Chad.

  24. avatar sirjase says:

nick .its all in fun .what do you mean .what am i sayin that gives the impression i dont know what im talkin about.what part?

  25. avatar Bent says:

Nik, it doesn’t matter who they traded him for. The trade accelerates cap money from 2009 to 2008 and as a result puts them 6m over for 2008. Any guys they traded for would only add to the 2008 cap number.

They are already at the cap…bringing additional money forward from 2009 is going to put them over and that’s what the effect of trading Coles would be.

It’s a shame, but there aren’t any guys out there with negative salaries that they could trade for!

  26. avatar sirjase says:

your right. blogs are opinions. but let me ask you this? do you agree what i said about our receivers and tight ends?

  27. avatar jetchick says:

    KC

LC is a loyal friend. Chad named his son after him. Chad was willing to take a pay cut for him.

Perhaps the friendships you have made were a tad more superficial, and therefore you are unable to comprehend the concept of loyalty.

LC is our best receiver, and has played hurt for the good of the team. LC is a warrior and carries that spirit on and off the field.

It pains me no end to have the likes of you pass judgement on his character.

  28. avatar sirjase says:

brent. would you agree what i said about bretts weapons and how he might use them?

  29. avatar Nikolas says:

    To: sirjase
I asked you sirjase to Name One GB player who stood out for Favre!
You say that they were many! maybe you know better; so why don’t you elaborate….. Say who, how, where, and what.
Instead of being adversarial, and say that I do not know what I am talking about, you could have provided the information and illuminate an issue which could have significant ramifications for this team.
If you had done that we could have constructive conversation. If not we will find ourselves in different frequencies of communication as is the case here with many fans.

    Subwayfare..

Yes Coles is too emotional and when someone is emotional is often irrational… like your unemotional quote?

“Favre’s a big enough boy to handle it and his charisma, desire to win and effort will win over any haters in the locker room, if not on this board.”

    This is funny!!! Boomerang

  30. avatar kc says:

just for the record, was my first comment “INFLAMMITORY”??? if it was,I appologize to EVERYONE who read it. I never meant for anyone to take it PERSONALLY(except maybe coles). i just want to say that I LOVE THE JETS BLOG! I wake up every morning and the first place i come is here(even BEFORE we got BRETT FAVRE BENT, just want to say it is an HONOR to have you reply to one of my posts..it means alot. I dont have a link, but I saw it on NEWYORKJETS.com under NEWS CLIPPINGS. The title read “Jets WR Laveranues Coles still MIFFED over CHAD PE toward the end of practice,PENNINGTON SACK” in the article i quote: “toward the end of practice,Coles STOOD ALONE on the sideline,AWAY from his TEAMMATES-UNUSUAL for him. CLEARLY,something is BUGGING HIM”

  31. avatar swizzle81 says:

Enough with the hogwash about Coles being a warrior, look that term up in the dictionary and you will see that cry baby is not part of it. He is not even the best receiver on the team anymore, I think one of the few Tangini mistakes was to guarantee the last 2 years of his contract, untradable and uncutable.

  32. avatar kc says:

my computer sucks ,sorry about the type-o’s

  33. avatar subwayfare says:

    Nikolas-

Your post is virtually incomprehensible but if I can take it to mean that you think Favre is just as wildly emotional as Coles, I agree wholeheartedly.

And the similarity that will mean the most to Jet fans is that they both can’t help but play hard and leave it all on the field regardless of what goes on outside it.

  34. avatar kc says:

thank you swizzle…if we wanted a crybaby with talen,we should have kept santana moss!!

  35. avatar sirjase says:

sorry about the profanity brent. theres alot passionate jet fans here. jetchick. your right. coles is a warrior and is a loyal freind but over the decades and years there has always been trades and im sure there have been best of freinds in the process. as long as ive been a sports fan i never heard anything like this. its all good. i like coles.always did but if hes gonna cause a distraction then it wouldnt be kool. the jets are a team and he is a big part of it but if he doesnt wanna play for us or is upset about the chad trade and will affect his play or our team then somthin needs to be done. like growin up.

  36. avatar ramble914 says:

Let LC sulk for a few days, he’ll get over it.

  37. avatar ramble914 says:

    KC,

I didn’t think your first comment was inflammatory. I took it as someone expressing an oponion about a player. I thought the response to your first comment was inflammatory and uncalled for, but thats the way it goes sometimes. Ignore it and move on.

  38. avatar sirjase says:

nick, so your tellin me, as a advet sports fan, that im sure you are you havent read or heard anybody on green bay wanting brett back. if i remember correctly jennings and driver publicly voiced there support on nfl network. we all know the packer fans wished he was still a packer. im sure players are scratchin there heads wonderin still what happened as we are. nick its all good. didnt mean to be so harsh.

  39. avatar kc says:

    thank you ramble914……

  40. avatar ramble914 says:

    No problem.

  41. avatar Nikolas says:

    Bent…
Thank you for your explanation. To the point.

    Subwayfare

Ok, maybe the way I write may require english comprehension….So let me explain it in a simpler way.
You accuse Coles of being irrational because he is too emotional! Do we agree on this?
Ok, … Then how should I characterize your own quote….here it is…

“Favre’s a big enough boy to handle it and his charisma, desire to win and effort will win over any haters in the locker room, if not on this board.”

Should I characterize your quote as rational or emotional? Because what you state on that paragraph is revealing of an extreme emotional state on your part!! Does that make you irrational?

  42. avatar Nikolas says:

PS: And guys..the fault is not mine..english maybe my second language, but your level of english comprehension needs a lot of work.

  43. avatar subwayfare says:

    Nikolas-

I’d say that sentence is fairly devoid of emotion. It’s simply a statement of opinion based on observation. It will either be proven true or false. I certainly would like it to be true because it is the scenario that will provide the team the best chance to win.

I want the team to win. I like individual players but I root for the Jets.

It’s hard not to infer, from some of the posts I’ve seen here, that there are people who would like to the team and the new quarterback to fail so that it proves a personal theory that the team would have been better off with Chad.

I loved Joe Namath. I hated seeing him go to the Rams. But if the two teams had played I would have been rooting for the Jets. No question.

    Does that seem too irrational?

  44. avatar Reprocity says:

Nik, When Ramble said “Ignore it and move on” you got two good pieces of advice right there. What ever number language english is to you it’s not a good idea to start off a blog post with “And guys.” Just trying to help :)

  45. avatar Reprocity says:

O Subwayfare… we only root against our beloved jets when they are eliminated from playoff contention.

  46. avatar Nikolas says:

SubwayFare …….the phrase “he… will” is speculative and not what you claim to be “opinion based on observation”..it is rather opinion based on conviction or desire. Unless you have the crystal ball and you can see the future! And what is that ..”he will win over any haters in the locker room”? Where is the observation? Can you name me any haters in that locker room?
You see….your statement was loaded with emotion! So you are right…emotional people sometimes are irrational.

  47. avatar Nikolas says:

Reprocity,…. you and some of your friends in this blog cannot handle any serious discussion. While you claim to be a die hard Jet fan, you insult and demean players consistently. To you and your friends, players must be treated like meat. So, do not bother to give advice….you are in no position to do so. Valuable advice can be given by those who are wise….and you have not convince me that you qualify.

  48. avatar Nikolas says:

And Reprocity..I think it is a good idea to start off with “And..guys..”

  49. avatar jetchick says:

Last season in the face of adversity Coles was a locker room leader and co-captain for our team. He was elected to that position by his fellow team mates. He played very injured for a team that won 4 games at the end of a hopeless season when he didn’t have to.

Of the field he spends time helping children that were molested as he was as a child.

He is our best, fastest and most capable receiver. He has deep speed and JC does not.

He is mourning the trade of Chad the way a good loyal friend would….he is not now nor has he ever been a cry baby.

Millions of Americans try to get more income every day and always….why not him? The career of NFL players is short, they get injured, and owners make 100 times what any player makes. Why is it OK for Woody to price gouge loyal fans, and not OK for LC to ask for more money?

Lastly, LC will come around on this as he always does. He will end up close to Farve, and catch many of his passes….which unlike Chad’s passes won’t put his life in jeopardy..

  50. avatar sjfalcon2001 says:

Is this what we have to look forward to all season? It seems like since the Favre trade discussions even began, there has been a lot of personal bickering going on in the comments. I’ve been coming to this site for at least the last year and a half and I have never seen it like this, even in the heat of a 4-12 season. I think we need to take it down a notch and just enjoy what we have.

Ultimately we have no control over what the front office does and the Favre trade is a good example of that. Chad was released because he wanted a chance to start and obviously he wouldn’t be doing that with Favre here. He plays for our enemy now. I love what Chad was as a player here, but we need to move on and accept the fact that Favre and the circus around him is here.

  51. avatar sjfalcon2001 says:

As for Coles, I understand that he was close to Chad, but football is a business and he is being paid to do a job. If he is a professional, he will do his job, but if he’s not and he makes the season unbearable, I say trade him in the off season. I think all will be fine with LC, but it may take a week or two.

  52. avatar Bent says:

Even trading him next season isn’t really an option because that creates 6m of dead cap space. Unless Favre retires, that’s a luxury they can’t really afford.

However, based on the information provided by all (thanks for details of the link kc…here it is – http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/2008/08/09/2008-08-09_jets_wr_laveranues_coles_still_miffed_ov-1.html
), I’d say this is possibly a case of Cimini making a molehill out of nothing and us making a mountain out of that molehill.

As ramble says, let him sulk. He’s often moaned in the past but will then “bring it” when it matters. Maybe he was upset that he couldn’t be out there to get to work with Favre, maybe he was just frustrated at being hurt, even if he is a bit down over losing his buddy Chad, I’m sure he’ll come round quickly if Favre starts to have some success.

  53. avatar NYJBeast89 says:

Check out this new vid of Madden. I kinda got stoked about this year when i watched it.

  54. avatar vinnywasthebest says:

Does anyone see an analogy to LoDuca not wanting to talk to the media? isnt it so obvious that the papers/tabloids are just trying to stir things up so that they can sell the sports page in the dog-days of summer when the Mets and Yankees arent -playing up to their potential? good for him, screw the lame ass beat writers. They waaaay to inot baseball and dont know a thing about football.
As for him being upset, yeah, so what? Him and Chad were VERY close. Its very painful for him to see Chad booted by the team and getting brutalized by critics, without having a chance to prove himself on two healthy legs, like in 06. He WILL get over it, he will have good stats with Favre at the helm, and maybe when his 2 year are up hell reunite with Chad. SO what? He is our best reciever right now. As much as i think Cotchery has talent, most of it is still untapped. Coles is our best option when we need a crucial 1st down or td.

  55. avatar Johnny Styne says:

jetchick — Coles our most capable receiver? — His ability to get separation within five yards from scrimmage made him Chad’s most capable receiver — Favre’s substantial vertical game makes Coles less essential — Furthermore, Chad laid out Coles with a career-threatening concussion last season — This will be Coles’ last season in the League –

  56. avatar Reprocity says:

sjf, I hear you on the needing to tone it down. I was just trying to help out some guy who ticked off and I get sucked into negativity. It’s just an amzing game!
