Could CB Dwight Lowery Start This Season?

Cannizzaro writes in the Post today about three young players (WR David Clowney, QB Brett Ratliff, CB Dwight Lowery) that the Jets have found and who might become bigger contributors to the team based on what’s been seen from camp.  Sure we all know about David Clowney and Brett Ratliff, but Cannizzaro has some high praise for Lowery, noting that

Lowery is making such progress, don’t be surprised to see him starting opposite Darrelle Revis at some point this season. He appears to be that much of a find for the Jets.

At best I thought we’d see him in replacement packages, but it will be very interesting to see if in fact he does start at some point this season.  Fourth year KR/CB Justin Miller was impressing at the beginning of camp, but the talk on him has seemed to cool over the past few weeks.

Stay tuned during the preseason … the CB#2 spot might still be up for grabs.

  1. He definitely seems to find himself in position to make plays. I still think his best long term position is at safety, but hell, with a (hopefully) improved pass rush, that should take some pressure off of the secondary anyway, which would allow us to roll the dice a bit more by starting another rookie back there.

  2. This kid was a ball-hawk in college and has enough speed to play opposite Revis. Are there better options? D. Colman is a nickle guy, Poteat is a 4th CB, Miller is Miller and dont get me started on 12 yard cushion Barrett. This kid would have been a 2nd rounder if he did not break his jaw. Best players play right? He’s the best option….by default!!

  3. I didn’t watch this guy in college, but I would like to see more from him during the preseason before he jumps to #2. It’s one thing to be great in college, but dealing with the NFL’s elite is another.

  4. Drew, I’m with you up untill the “by default” part though. As for this whole trio bit it’s cool to see some actual coverage outside of Farve but they totally left out Murrell and Cummings who also had really good games.

With the amount of evaluation at the QB position this preseason how will we be ready to be a run first O come week one?

  5. Don’t know how he’s been doing the last couple practices, but wasn’t Ahmad Carroll playing pretty well also. He’s a former first-round pick.

  6. I really think the defense must come under scrutiny early and often. All this talk of BF the gunslinger can only be tolerated by a team with a strong defense, one that can get the ball back on par with the offense giving it up. Turnover ratio must be positive for the Jets. If it is, I think the Jets will have made the best of the trade. Otherwise, we’ll hear “I told you so.”

The ’skins game should be a good test of the D’s progress and the D-line test will be push. Where the LOS moves to after the snap. If they are playing in the ’skins backfield, we’re good to go! Lowrey’s ballhawking skills will come into play when the QB is hurried.

i agree with murrel and cummings…they had a good game in clevland…

as for lowery becoming a stud at the #2 cb spot…that would just mean the jets struck gold in the fourth round yet again…

  8. i would also like to add bowens even though he’s a vet…he was all over the field…he played really well with the 2nd team D…concidering he learning a new position…ILB…

  9. Thanks Dakar, I forgot about Bowens. I was wondering why he was out there for so long? Bowens is like the Rick Lyle of LB’s. Steady and consistent.

I’d say Elam is on more of a hot seat than Clemens. Any takers?

  10. After watching the first preseason game, I’m on board with more scrutiny on the defense. As I said, I thought the first unit looked terrible against the Browns, tentative and overwhelmed as the Browns moved the ball at will against them. If this unit improves and plays to the talent level of the pieces which seem to be in place, then the offense won’t need to be spectacular.

  11. i like lowery but if you go back and watch the film from the browns game his lack of speed is evident. he was beat on a few routes (a couple by martin rucker a rookie tight end - albeit a very athletic one) but like the rest of the secondary was aided by some of dorsey’s weak throws. i do like what i see from him. good instincts, technically sound. but i am concerned that he simply does not have the quicks to be a succesful db in the league.

i agree with you about our 1st team D…they looked like they were on muscle relaxers…and their mentality from my point of view seemed to be its our 1st pre-season game…no need to bust our butts out there…

now i hope for the most part they come giving 110% the rest of the pre-season…doing so will get them ready for the games that count…but if they come out like they did last week…i see them starting out slow and this will hurt us early in the year unless our offense does its job and takes the pressure off our D…JUST MY THOUGHTS…

  13. The nicest thing that will happen if Lowery competes with Carroll and Miller for the starting job is that Barrett will be cut.

    Addition by subtraction.

  14. Yes, the 1st team D was pretty disappointing. Not what I expected given the new players. Then again, no Ellis or Harris, etc so probably better to withhold judgment for now

  15. if lowery keep playing like he does i think he will get the starting job and that might be a mistake because he wont be able to handle guys like wesley walker TJ ( bengals cant spell his last name lol) and a bunch of good WR we have to wait a while like in the 6th week then give it to him if miller starts to suck i am more worried about gholston is gonna look like an idiot out there again well i hope not , i hope that game brought him into the real world and made him realize nfl games are faster , i really hope he can be our shawn merriman without the steriods

  16. All I can say is I hope so.

  17. I played with the guy at cabrillo college in aptos, ca, and the kid is the truth….he’s 22 and have the mind of a 30 yr old vet….he’s got his head on right and it always was like that….we all knew he would make it…like i said hes the truth…your guys are lucky to have him…
