Link: Is Brett Bad for the Jets?

Allen Barra writes for the Wall Street Journal and set his sites yesterday on the Jets trade for Brett Favre.  Barra had some strong words about Favre and what it means to the Jets.

Let’s strip the Brett-to-the-Jets deal of the illusions the media has wrapped it in. What we have is a 4-12 team that has signed a 38-year-old quarterback who, though he made something of a comeback last season, hasn’t otherwise finished in the top five of the league’s passers since 2001. (In 2006 he was ranked 25th; in 2005, 31st.).

From 2005 to 2007, Mr. Favre has thrown 66 touchdown passes and 62 interceptions. If any other NFL quarterback had put up those numbers, his job would be on the line; instead, the New York Jets have chosen to delay the inevitable process of breaking in a new young quarterback — and in fact have released Chad Pennington, who, according to Kerry Byrne of the Web site Cold Hard Football Facts, is “maybe the most underrated quarterback in the NFL.”

Well, we were saying for months that all the other roster moves made who starts at Quarteback less important than it was a year ago.  Add in a favorable schedule and the Jets could stretch for the playoffs.  With Favre running the show, we’ll hope it adds another dimension to the offense.  In the meantime, I’ll wait for the first month of the season to run it’s course before I make any snap decisions.

  1. Wide receiver David Clowney left practice due to an apparent hand injury today.

  2. Pennington may have been underrated 4-5 years ago, but has this guy seen him lately? Let’s be honest, opposing defenses have been playing half the field and sitting on out patterns for a couple of years now with Chad. I love Chad and his intangibles, but no QB can be successful if DB’s don’t have to respect the deep ball.

  3. The media is never happy. We make moves to improve the team, it’s skewed as ‘desperation tatics’. We have a fair and equal QB competition to see who will be the starter, it becomes ‘they made all those pricey off-season moves without addressing the QB position.” Now we pick up a QB, who played extremely well last year, has a love for the game, and more or less played injury free his entire career and now ‘it’s a risky move that won’t work out.” I wasn’t a big fan of the trade, but now that Favre is a Jet I’m going to support him like a true fan should. I can’t wait for the Jets to show these media dummies what’s what.

  4. I don’t know who Allen Barra is, but he is one of only a few reporters that is taking a hard look at BF’s production this decade. He’s also the first to (rightly) bring up the delay in KC’s development (and maybe it’s more important to note the delay in Ratliff’s development) because of BF.

Let’s make BF EARN the adulation, OK?

  5. roller

im with you all the way…

  6. well this lady does have a point either way everyone is a winner the jets get media coverage and brett gets to play lol only deucebag would say that

hey mike T must have seen something in favre or else he wouldnt do something this stupid and we hired a bunch of guys and a new O line which is very good at pass blocking if you saw that game , there were a couple of plays were KC had 4 seconds to throw so if favre gets that much time to throw i doubt he will turnover the ball unless he is in his winging it mode

  7. WAY TO GO, BASSETT !!!
This is why your site is respected by your peers and and loved by more and more readers. Do are doing a great job giving us “both sides of the coin”.
I stronly suggest all Farve worshipers to read Barra’s unbiased comments : http://online.wsj.com/article_print/SB121850350943631871.html

  8. Its amazing how Chad gets the benefit of the doubt now that he is with Big Tuna. But got killed when he was here by all writers. The facts are even when we made the playoffs in 06 he was 16 TD16INTs. He just ran a tricky offense well….. Did this ass mention the upgrades on O&Dline and the LBS we picked up. i will take 25TD/18INT from Favre. Thats not a stretch for #4.

  9. Hey Styne;
Can’t wait for Jets vs Dolphins…. s/b (should be) a great two games for fans !! Specially the second one.

  10. seems like some (florio from pft and others) want and expect the jets to be content to be non-contenders.
any efforts to improve are deemed desperation or win-now gambits. sorry we got out of line.
not only are some used to a certain perception of the jets (and other teams) that they don’t want to reconsider, but others are experiencing favre fatigue and are reacting cynically to the hysterical hype. this was bound to happen.
btw, the naysaying doesn’t preclude bandwagon behavior later.

  11. totally correct on chad and favre. chad was a weak-armed softie until he was cast-off and now he’s a hidden gem. and favre was worth ’round-the-clock coverage (like the truman show) and now is overrated.

  12. If our D gives up 8 min drives like in Cleveland then I guess it doesnt matter who our QB is. It’s not about 1 and the rest of the 52… It’s about 53 and all three phases of the game comming together. Of course I’m being captian obvious here but… ya that’s all I got to say about that.

  13. Favre is an update over Chad, period, whether he is overrated or not, and regardless of whether he had a few years recently where he was playing without discipline.

My buddy kept telling me how pitiful Favre was and how he was tarnishing his legacy. I only disagreed insofar as the ball was still exploding out of his hand, and that it seemed he was just playing like a mad-man without thinking terribly much. The coach forces him to regain some discipline and he has a great year.

Chad, on the other hand, will always be disciplined but will never have that arm.

Difference: Brett can play with more discipline than 2005 and 2006; Chad cannot play with more arm strength!!!

  14. Roller- right there with ya
Chad has TWO shoulder surgeries. goes 1-7 before being benched (wonder what Allen Barra was saying then) and he knocks us for releasing him. Go Figure.

you trade for Favre, who based on last years performance is an instant upgrade to your QB position. maybe he flops on his face, hey he is 39 in Oct. Maybe he does his job, manages the game, stretches the field and plays like the iron man he is. thats more than Chad gave us last year. and i see no reason that was going to change this year.

oh lets not forget the amount of jerseys that have been sold. i wonder if that will also increase ticket sales. call me crazy but i bet for a 4-12 team last year, the stands will be pretty full this year.

  15. “You’re with me, Roller…” (or something like that)

  16. 4th round picks are valuable and all … but if Favre sux, it was worth a shot at a huge improvement for a 4th-rounder!

  17. Fozie, I have o correct you.

Chad actually scored 17 with 16 int’s, but that’s not the whole picture. Let’s compare both of their numbers from that year:

    Brett:
Pct Yds Avg TD Int Sck Rate
    56.0 3,885 6.3 18 18 21 72.7

    Chad:
Pct Yds Avg TD Int Sck Rate
    64.5 3,352 6.9 17 16 30 82.6

That’s just one year, it’s not the whole picture, but as you can see Brett was just bad. The year before, he was dismal!
But it’s interesting, Chad has better number in just about every way while being sacked 30% more often.

And I didn’t pick Chad’s best year or Bretts worst. I picked a the last year Chad was healthy.

Only time will tell if this was a terrible move, both side of the argument have merit. Personally I don’t like it.
From a business stand point, it does put us on the map.
I think what is going to make or break this decision is wheather or not Favre shows some restraint. Meaning, a good QB takes what the D gives him instead of trying to be a hero. Farve isn’t one to shun the hero roll. Last year alot of his success was due to the system he was playing in. I’ve read numerous reports that his coaches really stressed taking the short pass and underneath routes instead of trying to throw downfield so much. Hopefully he’s learned from that.

  18. Fonzie, I took your advice and read the wall street journal column. I have to say that it reminded of an article about a republican candidate. It was completely negatively slanted from the get go, and then proceeded to dissect Brett Favre’s numbers, comparing him with Joe Montana, Steve Young and Peyton Manning. It was obvious that the writer was trying to make Favre look bad. The whole debate about the Jets getting Favre is really a silly one. He makes the Jets better, period. Just look at his teammates reactions. They all love the fact that he is here. I’ve read great comments by Cotchery, Rhodes, Thomas Jones, Chris Baker, just to name a few. But it will all play itself out over the course of this season, and then we will see for ourselves.

  19. Some people on here need to get a life….

You guys need to remember that you are talking about a battle tested, super bowl champion, future hall of famer, broken every qb record avaialble and has never missed a game QB… This is not your average Joe Shmo that we picked up off the street and asked him to come play as Qb…

Stop second guessing the the FO because no matter what you say, it wont change anything… Plus, you have nothing to base your reasoning on. Brett Favre was runner up for MVP last year.

Sure, he is going to be a bit rusty and out of shape because he has been sitting on his ass for the last few months. He was retired after all. But come on, stop all the talk and wait till you seem him play before you guys have all this negative comments to make about him… Plus, all your negative talk isnt going to win us any games either…

Brett Favre is a winner and an upgrade over our Qb sitution. Just give the guy a break, give him some time, and enjoy the gun slinger that everyone has been raving about for the last 15+ years…

P.S. Dont get too excited if he doesnt look too sharp in his first pre season game either… I dont think he will look to good and might throw an interception.

But thats ok, its all part of the plan…

  20. And to put things in perspective(because the media blows things out of proportion…

    1) Is Brett Favre going to run /pass block?
    2) Is Brett Favre going to run the ball?
    3) Is Brett Favre going to catch the ball?
    4) Is he going to play in the trenches?
    5) Is he giong to kick field goals / punt?
    6) What about special team?
    7) Is he going to take on 2 defenders and clog the middle?
    8) Can he generate a pass rush?
    9) Can he cover Rand Moss?

    And best of all….

    10) Can he forgive your sins and get you into heaven???

My point is he is just one man that has to function as part of a team in order to win games. Brett cannt do it all alone. He is just a small piece of the puzzle. It is an important piece but its not everything..

The media blows things out of proportion and people eat it right up because he is a QB. Everyone needs to focus on the entire team and pay attention to everything else thats going on because Brett cant do it alone. Nobody can win anything on their own. Its a TEAM game…

  21. Another media moron who knows nothing about what he writes. A team can go 4-12, in the NFL, and win the SB the next year. It is a team game. If you put a QB like Chad or Brett on a good team – they will both have winning seasons. If you put either one on a bad team, they will both struggle. Brett, being a better QB with a better arm, can make a team better but, he can’t win it himself. Let the Dolphin game prove my point. Chad is on a rebuilding team and Brett is on a rebuilt team. We are going to crush the fins. 12-4 will become a distant memory, in a short period of time. Farve will have a great season, with his outstanding supporting cast, and he will end up loving his agent for getting him to NY. With no line in front of him, Chad will get injured again.

  22. Chad is the better QB, Favre WAS the better QB.
    Favre is a downgrade.
Sept.7, Chad with two injured RBs and no WR and no OL will teach you a football lesson.
You watch Jets football the last 7 years and you have learned nothing! Your Final Grade is F-

  23. PS: Oh..we love Chad and what he stands for….but the man could not throw beyond 5 yards . He will dink and dunk you for two games this season.

  24. Nikolas,

Bro I cant figure out what side your on…

You are funny tho. I ll give you that… Chad is great but cant throw past 5 yards… And dink and dunk you for 2 games lol.. Thats good.

  25. I love Chad but why does he get a pass when he has a bad year with excuses of injury. But when Farve has a bad year with the team with the least experience in football it is all his fault.

Our defense knows Chad and it is true he will dink and dunk. Unfortunately for Chad it will be dinks to our cornerbacks for TDs.

  26. Najy
    right on
When a team wins the QB gets too much credit.
When a team loses the QB gets too much blame.

  27. Chadrules…..
    You rule man!

Tannenbaum does not like leader type personalities like Mawae, Kendall, Pennington, Vilma, Baker, Coles etc because only Woody can be the LEADER on their kindengarden.

  28. I did some research and I discovered that Allen Barra is Nikolas.

  29. Nikolas
If what you say about Tannenbaum not liking leader typres they wouldn’t have gotten Faneca, Jenkins or Farve.

  30. I meant types

  31. Pat D ..you don’t BUY or RENT leadership!
A Necessary condition for leadership is first to bleed Green and White!!! To be born by the Green and White, to be raised by the Green and White.

Maybe Allen Barra reads this Site!

  32. All players are bought. Except Farve. He has something to prove. You are familiar with Farve you would realize the opposing teams will fear the Jets for a change.

  33. I am going to borrow the Ramble914 philosophy. If you all like Chad so much go root for the Dolphins. I am glad we got Favre, we just went from maybe playoffs to maybe Super Bowl if things break our way. No one honestly wants Chad to be our QB. I wanted him to retire and be our QB coach.

  34. I wanted Chad to be our QB when KC was our other option. But to pick between Chad and Farve is a no brainer.

    James in TN
    Well said.

  35. So much for Brett being bad for the Jets.
    5 for 6 with 1 TD
    Not to bad
