Gholston is lost but OLB in the 3-4 is a very hard position. Usually no one comes right in and plays it gangbusters. There are a lot of responsibilities and checks, etc. If he went to the bears or some 4-3 team and just had to rush the passer and 1 -gap he’d be doing much better. Look at Anthony spencer at Dallas. Last year a bust this year he may beat out a pro bowler. merriman played well but he is an exception. Additionally Gholston missed all minicamp.
So I expect him to spell BT here and there a few plays a game this year. But next year if he’s the real deal he will show up. Lets hope he’s not like his old OSU mate Bobby carpenter. Actually AJ Hawk isn’t lightsout either. OSU Backers ?
lastly, Long was the guy we wanted but we couldn’t get him at #2 so who do we pick another corner at #6 after revis at 14, NO! Mayo at inside, after we already have harris, no. We’d have to trade out but to whom? After DMAC was gone who was going to trade up. I think in the end we had a good off-season and can afford to wait a year on a top notch prospect. give the kid a break. -
Well said, Green Dream. I agree. Mario Williams was a “bust” his first year when compared to Reggie Bush, and then look how the second year panned out. Justin Tuck didn’t break out until the playoffs last year. It takes a while to make the transition in the NFL because the O-lines are much better, and you aren’t just pinning your ears back on every play….unless of course you play for the Eagles :-)

Mike Lombardi’s notes:
Random Thoughts from Last Night’s Games…
…Thank God the Jets went and got Brett Favre. Did you see Kellen Clemens last night? Batted balls, poor execution, clearly not a starting quarterback in the NFL.
…Loved how Favre looked and played. Imagine if he was still on the Packers? They would be a top four team…no doubt.
…Opposing teams will spread the Jets out on first and second down and make their big outside backers have to play in space. They still lack some speed and rush ability on defense.
…Dolphins QB Chad Henne is going to make the Jets regret not drafting him in two years. He played well again last night.
…Outside linebacker Vernon Gholston of the Jets was painful to watch last night. He was not very physical and seems to have no clue of whether the opposing team is calling a run or pass. Even the Jets TV announcers said he was disappointing.
I don’t like the way Gholston looks and plays, but let me reiterate here what I mentioned previously on NFL Network. In the immortal words of Art Modell, the former owner of the Browns, “I am not second guessing, I am first guessing.” You have to know the scheme of the defense when you are evaluating tape. You also have to know the difference between when the coach put a guy in a position to make a play and when the player himself just made the play. If you don’t know this, you’re just a fan watching the game. Gholston had the athletic talent when he was on the move, stunting or stemming, to be very effective. Watching the film, though, I could see plenty of lapses when he had to read, react, and make a play. I went back to the pre-draft scouting notes I made on Gholston, “reminds me of Bryan Thomas of the Jets.” And the Jets picked him. Like I wrote yesterday, if you don’t learn from your mistakes as a scout, you will keep making them. It’s early yet, but I have seen this one before and it never turns around.
