Redskins 13 – Jets 10: Favre’s First Game As A Jet

We just switched over to the new dedicated server last night. I had written up a nice report on Favre and the others last night, but it was lost in the transition. I’ll write up some more later tonight, but I am working on a big house project today (kitchen cabinet upgrade), so will try and get back up to speed later tonight / tomorrow morning.
All to say, Favre looked good in an offense where he doesn’t know much of it yet. Yes, his first drive stalled, but he went 5-6 for 46 yards and a TD. Cotchery looks to be a big beneficiary of Favre’s presence, hauling in a 11 yard strike in Favre’s first throw in a game as a Jet and another 19 yarder on the second drive.
Beyond that, look for Ratliff to have earned himself a roster spot … somehow … at the least maybe the Jets could get a seventh rounder for him rather than release him a la Bollinger a few years back? David Clowney is impressing, but where he is on the depth chart, he still needs to be a bigger Special Teams factor than Wallace Wright.
More later, please add your thoughts in the comments. We’re glad we’re through with our old provider once and for all, and are looking forward to more stable days.

Trade or cut Ratliff? I doubt that’s even a remote consideration. He will be the # 3 QB at worst. Kellen will be the backup and Ainge is headed for the practice squad or IR. Clemens is the guy who should be a bit worried. I know Ratliff has been facing 3rd and 4th team defenses, but he looks more fluid, confidant and grasps the offense better than Clemens. There seems to be a very good base in place with Ratliff in which the can build upon.
Clowney made two plays on special teams which helped solidify his roster spot until he was injured. I read it’s a collarbone. Let’s hope it’s a bruise and not a fracture.
well i believe favre will get more playing time in the next game because he was limited by the plays he only knew next game his knowledge of the playbook will be alot more than yesterday
first i though ratliff was ainge’s problem but now he is going for KC spot as the 2nd string , bassett you werent kidding when you said ratliff is having the camp of his life , this kid might just be something i hope he makes the roster and ainge better start playing or he might end up in the practice squad
clowney will be a good 3rd WR but right now i like how clowney is versatile, so now we can afford to get rid of wallace he is just a waste on the roster
and nugent we have to talk abut nugent all i can say he is a waste of a 2nd rd pick, this is a contract year and he better get 90% of his kicks or i say we get rid off him
and mangini ofcourse made a deucebag move
Wallace Wright isn’t much of an offensive weapon, however, he makes the majority of the special team tackles…he is in on almost every play…cutting him would be a mistake.
bozzie
brad smith and clowney can both play his part in special teams
Doesn’t look good for Clowney… from Hutch…
“Jets wide receiver David Clowney, who is having a sensational training camp and is the team’s leading receiver in the preseason, suffered a collar bone injury that may sideline him for at least several weeks if not longer, according to someone with knowledge of the injury.”
Brett’s first game was everything a fan could hope for: completions, a TD and above anything else he came out of it without an injury. I haven’t felt his excited and confident about putting points on the board since ‘98. However, preseason is all about the depth. How about Cummings and Mattison continuing to impress? These guys should have roster spots come September. I am also still rooting for the big Samoan, Pitotua to make it (the guy is HUGE), but who knows? A practice squad spot may be more likely. How can a guy look so good on one play and so bad on another? (I am looking at you James Ihedigbo)
Kellen Clemens and Brad Smith need to go in order to make room for more talented players at the same positions.
Bollinger wasn’t released….he was traded to the Vikings for C.J. Mosley and Minnesota’s 2008 7th round pick.
Hmm, guess our comments from this morning got deleted.
Release Kellen Clemens and he will be starting for the Vikings. He was victimized. They dropped everything he threw and he had no chance to show us anything. We shouldn’t be so down on him. He does however need to do soemthing to keep Ratliff out of the #2 spot.
I didn’t say release but if there are no takers then so be it. It’s not like Kellen Clemens is a big upgrade for the Vikings. He was the worst QB in football last year. This year he was given the chance to win the starting QB job and couldn’t.
The Bad the Good and the Ugly
THE BAD:
1. The defense did not look good.
2. The coaching did not look good.
3. The kicking game did not look good.
THE GOOD:
4. Favre looked ok.
5. Ratliff was more impressive than Favre.
6. Marcus Henry seems very talenetd
7. Keller seems very talented
8. Cummings, Murrel will make the team
THE UGLY:
7. Bubba Franks must be cut.
8. Miller is not a starting CB,
9.The special teams looked like they were missing something… I guess they miss the best coach we had
10.What is the problem with KC , the snap and the dropped balls?
11.Do we have a running game?
Nikolas, you are UNBELIEVABLE! Favre looked OK? C’mon, he was great for the limited time he was in there. Please be fair.
pat,
you are rating a rookie qb after playing half of one year with a horrible line. Not smart. Kellen is a good player but, you would never see that. Brad smith is also a player. Marcus murrell is in the backfield every time I see him. David bowens is going to have a great year. I do not envy the coaches, when it comes time for cuts. Lots of talent on the team. Now, let’s torch the giants.
I missed the game. Anywhere online I can watch it?
Pete….. Favre was not Great! ….What was great about it? Did you see an 80 yard drive? or a 65 yard drive? The unbelievable catch? Common…stop the hype! He just completed a few well desighned plays.
Ratliff was more impressive than Favre. He took the team in less than a minute down to the Redskins 5 yard line and threw a TD pass which was dropped by Raymond. Besides Favre’s passes were not different than the Dink and Dunk passes that you have accused Chad of. DINK and DUNK
Clemens sucks i really hate even looking at him please trade him immediatly ratliff will be favres successor
Chad would not have hit Cotchery in stride for the 19 yarder. Chad would have laid it up for him and he would have gotten crushed as the ball got there. I think someone thinks too highly of their own opinion; so much so that it obscures reality. Objectivity is not the strong suit of some posters. Plays and receiver routes are not the choice of the QB anyway. I think Burger King doesn’t even make some people happy – even if they can get it their way they will find a way to complain.
And the reverses and play action passes, while Chad did them perfectly, don’t work as well when the box is stuffed and the routes aren’t deep. Basically Favre, with that 19 yard sling to Cotchery, opened up the reverse. The bullet to Keller was a toss and catch that seemed easier than any goal line play I’ve seen the Jets run.
Clemens is just unlucky. If he wasn’t getting the ball to the receivers I’d say he has problems but he is getting it there, and he even scrambles to make plays, and he is not rewarded. The missteps can be fixed. Nothing is like going live so that may be something they hadn’t had a problem with until actual game action.
Sorry Nikolas, you are wrong on this one. Just like Favre said, 10 days ago he was doing yard work. He came out and drove the Jets down the field. In 2 series he scored a touchdown against the Skins 1st team. He did great. I like Ratliff too. But he is no Favre.
Like it or not, watching Favre the other night was one of the most exciting things for the vast majority of Jet fans in a very long time.
…and Favre’s passes were no different than Chad’s? Nikolas, please please please come back to us.
Nikolas
I totally agree! #4 was just okay. Last I checked, it takes more than 1 man to win a game. Farve is good, but it will take alot more than just him to make the playoffs.
Pete…and any of the people in this blog who think that Chad can not hit Cotchery with a 19 yard pass in stride, better go to check your head.
RK…. If I think HIGH of my opinion and YOU can disregard it so easily…then you must think even HIGHER of your own opinion.
RK….for your cheap shot…you desrve a whopper. Let Burger King keep you happy.
and for your information ..when Favre was hiting Cotchery for 19 yards, Chad ,against the Jaguars, was hiting Ted Gin for 25 and 17.
Farve was Farve, a quality pro QB and showed no rust.
Ratliff was impressive.
The kicker should be on thin ice.
Releasing Ratliff would not be smart as it looks right now, he is performing better than Kellen Clemens which means it looks like a battle for the number two spot on the charts …
