Peter King Knows Deep Down You Really Hate Your Team
(image care of our friends at KSK)
Who else needed a weekly reminder on why Peter King drives us up the wall?
Peter King lit into us Jets fans today for not hanging from the rafters to cheer on Emporer Favre’s six passes, which we’ll tackle here.
4. I think I don’t want to hear what great fans the Jets have. Not for a long time.
Know what I don’t want to hear when I hear your name? Best NFL journalist. Not for a long time.
For a guy who’s years behind the curve in culture (Band of Brothers, Guinness Beer, Panera Bread) let alone expertise in his own area of specialty (lobbying for years against Art Monk’s deserving election to the HOF) it’s hard for me to take any opinion King has seriously.
Instantly, I’m reminded of the Jets History DVD that came out last year, and in which Peter King chides Jets fans for dumping on a team with a number of playoff appearances. Why do I get the feeling King is just building a case to make Favre a martyr in New York should he stumble?
That crowd Saturday night was a disgrace. At least half the stadium was empty for Favre’s debut in a Jets’ uniform.
Just a clarification Peter … was it as much as a disgrace as say … another savior QB who made his first home appearance with a new team? Let’s check the crowd shot for Matt Ryan’s first home game in Atlanta … shall we? OK then.
I expressed my amazement to a few fellow scribes Saturday night — emphasizing that N.Y. traded for an all-time-great quarterback, not a broken-down one — and they gave varying reasons for the poor turnout.Like it’s the middle of vacation month for New Yorkers, and it’s a preseason game.
Peter’s lived in the New York area for how long and still doesn’t understand the psyche of people in the area yet? Lemme put myself in the spot of an average fan:
I just fought four hours of beach traffic Friday night to get down to the shore. Now that I’m relaxed and have my feet in the sand and it’s Saturday, let me turn around and head back up to see Favre play two series in a meaningless preseason game I could have watched on TV, only to deal with traffic again getting out of the stadium tonight and then again tomorrow night as I have to head back to work to provide for my family while they enjoy their week at the beach …
Sca-rew that.
Can you chide LA Dodgers fans for showing up the third and leaving in the sixth? It’s in their DNA. This is New York, not Green Bay. There’s a lot more to distract people from something as trivial as preseason football. No one in New York cares about attending preseason games. When you are competing with some of the country’s best nightlife, beach hotspots and summer vacations areas, and the disposable income to do it, it’s just not going to happen.
Jets fans sell out every home game and games are packed during competitive seasons. Ticketholders are put through the ridiculous preseason sham that they pay full price for tickets to games which mean nothing in the standings (but we’ll agree have other benefits for position competitions, etc.) and you are going to shame them for doing what they want with those tickets?
Shut the crap up, Peter.
People pay a lot of money to do what they want with those tickets. If what they want to do is enjoy a moment’s peace for a weekend and wasting those tickets, let them do it. If they want to give those tickets to people who might or might not attend, let them do that. The Tri-State areas is a grind. People will make it an appointment to attend once it matters, for once, let them enjoy the Hamptons or the Adirondacks or their own couch.
Horsefeathers.
Readers, please kick me in the balls if I ever write the word ‘horsefeathers’ in a column other than to quote Peter King.
If you really love your team, and you have season tickets, you should have been at that game unless you were in Tibet. Ridiculous.
There you go Jets fans. If you have season tickets and you didn’t attend, Peter King believes you don’t love your team … of course unless you were in a questionably annexed peaceable mountain province of China, then you seem to have a valid excuse.
Thanks to sec108 for noting this …

what a turd King is. It was a preseason game ya dolt. I’d like him to rip into Jets fans when EVERY game this season will be sold out, as it is almost every year, what will his excuse be then?
Bassett ..nice response and to the point ….. I agree …he is parochial.
Horsefeathers
Seriously, what a joke. Does any team ever fill the stadium for preseason games? PK has taken his man-love for Favre way too far on this one.
Not to mention, I’m sure a lot of season ticket holders did what I did and donated the tix to charity well before Favre even signed with the team.
Your exactly right Basset, NY is NY. No matter how much we love/hate this team (for me its usualy both), I’m out at the bars on a Saturday night and DVR’ing a Jets preseason game.
If I was in Green Bay, I would be at Lambeau as often as possible trying to hide myself from the women of Wisconsin (there’s a calender I wouldn’t buy)
King really looked a like a putz with that comment
Kind of hard to get to the game when I was getting hammered at the Jersey Shore with hot chicks!! Drinks started really flowing after the Keller reception. Not sure on this but apparently thier are alot of chicks that dig Brett Favre?? Who knew?? Peter King is a tool. Has been and always will be!!
King is at odds, because he loves the Pats and Lord Favre, but hates the Jets….so how can he keep his alliegences intact?
Attack the Green and White faithful! Brilliant!
Stick to Montclair softball and field hockey, you Jack-hole!
Most weekly rentals at the shore run from Saturday to Saturday, so if you’ve driven down there to get into your place, you sure as hell not driving back with the crowd that is leaving just to see two series. He probably never stayed ‘down the shore’ in his life.
I will never understand who reads his awful articles and keeps him employed.
I do enjoy reading his MMQB as he usually has informative takes on that weekends games. But this was ridiculous. Ripping into fans for not going to a preseason game. Outrageous. Maybe he could get away with it if he didn’t express his undying love for the Sawx and Pats in EVERY post he makes.
According to Matt above, some holders give their tickets to charity. (I didn’t know this, but it makes great sense for a meaningless game you have to purchase) so now King has insulted every good-hearted fan that apparently aren’t real fans because they didn’t go to the game.
lets see on OPENING DAY if there is ONE SEAT OPEN!!?? (hint:THERE WONT BE!) J-E-T-S JETS! JETS!! JETS!!!!
I’ve been wondering what was going to happen when Peter Kings two passions collided (Love for Farve/Dislike for Jets). Apperently his dislike of the Jets wins out!
lets go jets!
Excellent rip-job Bassett, couldn’t have said it better myself.
King is a huge hypocrite on this one, he has been killing the league for years for a) playing too many preseason games and b) forcing fans to pay for tickets to the meaningless preseason games. Now comes an attack on the Jet faithful for not attending one of these very games? Simply because Favre the wonderful was going to play a series or two?
I wasn’t on vacation, but I live on the island, and have yet to attend a preseason game for which I have been forced to purchase tickets for longer than I care to remember. I oftten give them away to anyone I know who wants to go because I just don’t have it in me to committ to 3-4 hours of travel just to watch meaningless football when I can do it from the comfort of my own home. I’ve missed exactly 1 regular season game in the last 9 years (it was for my own wedding and the jets were 0-4 at the time), and I will be there for every one this year, and I hope King’s favorite human starts every one of them, but all that to watch 10 minutes of Favre game action, no thanks.
If that makes me less of a “fan” in king’s eyes so be it, when’s the last time he paid for a ticket?
hey bassett you think the jets should take a ;look at jay feeley just in case nugent dosen’t get his act together?
no to feeley. Nugent is better and will be better than anything Feely would provide us. If anything, he could be brought in just to pressure Nugent. But Nugent is a better kicker than what we saw.
sec108…no matter your history, according to King, you don’t “really love” your team.
Obviously I am with you.
At the end of the article King goes on and on about Michael Phelps and how watching the Olympics is the greatest thing in the world. So, if you went to Jets meaningless pre-season game, you would have been stuck in traffic rather than watching Michael Phelps make history. I’ll bet if the stadium were full, King would rip the Jets fans for not watching the Olympics and hating America.
I must say that the Wisconsin sport reporters made a big deal out of the attendance at Giant stadium, but most of them are in Thompson’s (the GM) back pocket. It is true, however, that even the pre-season games are sold out at Lambeau, but’s that’s because Favre was playing. It is interesting that this year, there were some tickets available on game day, but they might have been gone by kickoff. If Favre were still playing, there would never be tickets available at Lambeau. But in fairness, GB is not the Big Apple either.
I’d be very interested to see the NY TV ratings of the game.
Ugh, really? this guy is a spaz. Saturday night at the Meadowlands sounds crappy to me. Ive been there last preseason and had to park in Lyndhurst, $28 , no tailgaiting (had to chug 3 beers), get bused over on school buses, no ac, back into traffic, port-o-potties (remember those beers?) and 8$ beers at the stadium. No thanks. Definately never again for preseason until the next stadium. Lets see peter king sit in traffic for two hours and park in lyndhurst. No Krispy cremes there, fattie.
Has anyone ever seen the people in Wisconsin?? The women look like a less athletic version of Peter King. This jackass was praying Favre was going to the Bucs.
The meaningless preseason game looked great on TV.
hey hoz-
I don’t think so … I think that’s only the second kick in three years that he’s missed from within the 20 …
it’s not great, and I don’t like the fact that he’s not automatic beyond 50 … but that’s the price of being a kicker drafted in the second round.
i don’t he’ll necessarily be around 10 years like herm predicted … but we’ll see …
Drew….you are a Joke. Apologize to the people in Wisconsin and their women. If not you are a Clown.
What a chode.
KSK says it best, as usual:
http://kissingsuzykolber.uproxx.com/2008/08/you-ungrateful-little-shts-have-no-respect-for-greatness.html
FIRST of all,WHO CARES what this OVERWEIGHT COUCH POTATO has to say about our BELOVED JETS and FANS!!?? I think what BRETT FAVRE said after the game saturday is WAY more interesting. i quote: “one thing i KNOW for SURE,when i stepped on the field as i did(saturday) i KNEW i made the RIGHT DECISION. I FEEL LIKE IM A JET!”
Sounds like Bassett is a bit ticked off. I wonder what *cough downtime* may have prefaced this obvious angst * ack server errors * that our beloved Brian Basset is displaying.
How about next time you say horse feathers we kick PK in the balls? I bet that would make everyone feel alllright.
What a schmck… The real crime is the fact that you are forced to buy tickets to two pre-season games just to get a season ticket. And how about the fact that they even call this Favre’s first appearance on the Jets. This appearance counts as much as the one he made at Hofstra all week. It’s PRACTICE!!!!
The passes won’t even being on his stats sheet when the season starts. What is this guy taking about?!?!?!
And how about the fact that they actually televise pre-season football on National TV. Are you kidding me? I am a HUGE Jets and NFL fan and I can’t wait for the season. But preseason Tennessee and whoever they played on Monday night Football last week???? Please. Truly, how sad does my life have to be to actually sit in front of the tv to watch this boring nonsense?
Nikolas have you been to Wisconsin? I am sorry I offended you and your friends from GB but the truth is the truth. My cousin went to school there and it was a mess. There are very nice people but not winning any beauty contests my friend…..Always fun to find the sensitive guy in the group.
Hey Basset, thanks again for going to bat for us against this jerk. It’s painfully obvious that this man compromises his journalistic integrity to alienate us Jet fans.
I was in Windsor, Ontario this weekend and managed to catch the first half of this game. I was dedicated enough to catch the Favre series amidst a bachelor party and fully nude strip clubs that serve alcohol. I’ve been to about 20 games over the past five years and I am a real fan. This guy can shove his righteous opinion up his horsefeathered ass.
My favorite: “PK’s just pissed that the Jets fans yelled at him for an hour to show his tits.”
I wonder if Peter King had to sit in traffic, pay for admission, pay for parking, and pay for food……I highly doubt it. Watching Brett Favre take around 14 snaps is much easier to do in front of a TV and it doesnt end up costing over $100 to go see a game that…….wait for it, wait for it…..DOESN’T COUNT!!!!
POPPYCOCK!
seriously… the 60,000 jerseys sold in 3 days werent enough? Sorry people didnt wanna pay regular season prices to see Favre throw 5 passes… not to mention we shot up the ticketsales list like 20 places… every jets fan needs to email PK and let him hear it!
I went to all 8 atrocious, painful, eye-gouging regular season games last season, including some real winners like Jets-Chiefs. But since I didn’t go to a preseason game in which Brett Favre played roughly 5 minutes total, I guess I’m not a fan anymore. I’m sorry I had better things to do (go to a party) Peter King, please forgive me!
What a joke.
10,000 fans show up to Favre’s first practice and more than 1/2 the stadium is filled on a Saturday night in NY for a meaningless pre-season game, but to PK we’re not great fans? He’s a douchebag!
Readers, please kick me in the balls if I ever write the word ‘horsefeathers’ in a column other than to quote Peter King …
Remind me to kick Peter in the balls just for saying that and then again for blasting New York, his piece isn’t making fans happy I wouldn’t be surprised if there was an angry mob waiting for him somewhere … King just hurt his reputation for any further writings on anything New York and possible more.
this guy was also terrible on hbo
love to see the jet pride unified on here
billvv – I laughed my a$$ off on that one too! Histerical!
King is a bum. He cant be from northern new jersey or NY metro area. He has no idea. There may not have been a packed stadium, but I tell you what, the parking lot was BANANAS! Packed. #4’s everywhere. I suggest that our homey king doesnt make any appearences in east rutherford. We might have a problem…..When favre took the field, we heard it at your parking spot (even with an half empty stadium). Now imagine how loud, and how much support he will get at the home opener?
What Peter King doesn’t understand is that the JETS are lucky to have 10,000 at their preseason games. So 40,000 is a significant increase.
Also Peter King and his assine ideas are one of the reasons I don’t subscribe to SI anymore.
I absolutely love preseason games b/c I’m obsessed with tailgating and I’m not a season ticket holder, so in addition to stub-hubbing 1-2 games each year, I like getting there as much as possible.
I absolutely cannot, however, blame a season ticket holder for not wanting to go to every preseason game, even if Favre is in there. My perspective as a non-season ticket holder is much different!
I gag every time that bilious windbag opens his mouth. Last year his “expert” assessment of the Belacheat scandell as being insignificant was unbelievable. I live amongst the enemy (in Central Mass) and the Boston sportscasters were WAY more critical (and interesting) than King was of the PATS. Being controversial is cool if you can provide some sort of insight or fresh, interesting, perspective. But time after time we see the bloated jerk posturing like the final authority on what’s going on “Inside” the NFL and yet if you look back – you’ll find that he simply lurching along behind the rest of the self-adoring sheep in the National sports media.
