Audible: Who’s Your Darkhorse?
With WR David Clowney sidelined the most likely darkhorse to make this team is in limbo. With cuts starting in just a few days, is there anyone that you are really pulling for to make this team? You can check the current roster here.
For me? I’m pulling for Jehuu Caulcrick the potential backup Fullback. With Tony Richardson, the starting spot is in good hands even though it’s in the hands of a vet who might be here just a year or two, and injuries have to be a concern. When you factor in Dustin Keller’s presence on the team, the team has their closest thing to an H-Back … so bruisers are what they need at Fullback. If there’s one thing about Caulcrick, it’s that he’s a classic bruiser. You can watch a video of him embarrassing Notre Dame in 2006 here. Beyond that, his story of fleeing from Liberia as a child is inspirational.
So … who’s your darkhorse?

Murrell was mine heading into camp. DE Brown had a great night as did Cummings. Cummings and Ihedibgo make the practice squad while Brown edges out Vito.
Well, nobody even thinks of him as a dark horse now, but he certainly was a long shot going into training camp…. Brett Ratliff.
And, assuming his injury will only sideline him a few weeks, I’m still pulling for Clowney.
61 – Mattison.
USA Today moved the Jets from 24 to 17 today.
I am rooting for Jehuuuuuuuuuuuuu!
Kareem Brown
BTW…Cimini is reporting this morning that Clowney does in fact have a broken collarbone, and lists him out for 4-6 weeks.
Given that they’ve got almost 3 weeks before their first game, unless it’s a weird break, I can’t see how he doesn’t make the team and is just inactive for the first 3 weeks. I mean, if he were going to be out for 10 weeks, or if this had happened in the last pre-season game, perhaps it might be different. But again, since they have some time before they play game 1, if this really is a 4-6 week injury, he could be back by Week 3 against San Diego, or worst case, he could be back for Cincinnati, the first game after the 5 (game 5).
I think the dimension he brings to the offense will be worth carving out a roster spot for him.
With all the WR’s in camp, we are going to be cutting some quality players. I want Marcus Henry to stick. I think he will, as they give the edge to rookies but, he is in a deep group. Jehuu is one of my favorites, as well. Although, he is a bruiser at the point of attack, I have not seen him drop a pass out of the backfield, in practice or games. Marcus Murrell is a big-time keeper, he has gotten to the QB every time that I have seen him.
Pociask
I’m going with Cameron Worrell only because he kicked ass in my preseason of Madden 09.
Ropati Pitoitua, just with the name alone he should have a shot.
1. As posted elsewhere, I still stick with Clowney. He only misses a couple of games and I think he may be the best young WR on the team. I have no problem with Henry on the practice squad. Wright sticks to because he is our best special teams player. That means Stuckey may get stuck but I think I would prefer to cut the cord on Smith.
2. Cummings has been a force, albeit against deadwood. But Chatham has been deadwood except on specials so I would rather go with the young guy on the roster. I would not risk him getting picked up by a team short of LB. Chatham will not help this team anytime he gets PT at a LB position.
3. I would prefer prefer Pociask over Franks. What else do you want the kid to show? But I would hold off on this cut until necessary to help with the Favre transition. And, I would consider either as an H back to keep 4 TE if Pociask can handle specials.
4. I would prefer Chatman over any of the other RB including Caulrick or Smith.
5. I too like Brown for the DL. He looks like a fit. Both Pouha and Mosely have looked OK.
6. I am hoping Carroll replaces Barrett, but given the salary cut Barrett agreed to, I suspect Tangini will take the “deal” over the better player.
h
That Brett Favre guy.
MARCUS HENRY!!!
I do like the motors of both Mattison and Brown…off the edge, it’d be nice if these guys stuck as good rush specialists.
marcus henry is going to be the big target we craved for yrs.
Also gotta go with Marcus Henry. The Jets need a tall WR threat.
Cummings will make the roster
Pociask.
The WR group is tough this year. Clowney looks too good to pass up. Wallace Wright is an awesome special teamer – how about that play where he caught the guy from behind the other night? – and Marcus Henry is intruiging, the only really tall one in the group.
David Ball is certainly out, although he has potential to be a decent player. The group is just too deep for him to make it.
It seems to me that Coles, Cotch, Stuckey and Smith are entrenched (for those that don’t like Smith, that end around certainly helped his case against the skins) and Clowney has shown just too much not to make the team (although you have to hope that the injury is a fluke and he’s not injury-prone).
I really hope they can find some way to make room for Wright, because with Kassel out on IR, we need him on special teams. He’s likely the best special teamer we’ve got, although Brad Smith makes nice plays there, too. Henry needs time to develop, so maybe we can sneak him through on the practice squad and then IR him once the season starts as Bassett has suggested previously. This may be a way to approach Ainge as well.
I like Pociask, but the TE group is deep, too. We may have to take our chances with him on the practice squad and carry 6 WRs (to keep Wright) rather than keep 4 TEs as some others have suggested.
Cummings, Murrell
Cummings looks like he could be a legit force in the thin linebacking corps that we have. Hopefully he can step up and be that dark horse.
Murrell looked good against the second team offense, but do we have any spots left for another DE/LB? Probably not.
I dont think David Ball is much of anything but a every now and then make a catch more difficult than it has to be kind of guy. Hes like an NBA player who takes the league avg low percentage shot and makes it a high percentage shot, without the rest of the package
Yup, Brian, Jehuu’s my boy, too.
He hasn’t run much yet, but he’s a good receiver, and a great blocker, and part of the reason Chatman looked so good, last week.
Marcus Morrell, and Kenwin Cummings aren’t too far behind.
Murrell is a no-brainer the way he’s played, but Cummings looks incredibly mature, with great instincts… he may grow into a solid inside LB.
Then… I liked what I saw of Marcus Henry, both after the draft, and on Saturday…
I’d like to see fellow Arizona State Sun Devil alum, Rudy Burgess, make the team… though their is a backlog of wide receivers. He’s a playmaker!
david ball.
WOW…Off topic
Peter King addresses Jets fans concerns over his MMQB in his post today…and I think he made things worse. I’ve always liked him and I thought he was reasonable, but he bashes us even more than on monday. Horsefeathers must be clouding his brain.
i hate ?s like this…
murrel,i liked him from last year and he’s even better this year…cummings, seems to always be around the ball…henry,i love that he catches the ball with his hands and he doesn’t fear the middle…clowny, until he got hurt he was looking like a great deep threat waiting to happen…jehhuu, this kid can do more than just block and open up holes…there are a few more…but out of this group i would have to say…on defense…
murrell and cummings…i like what i’ve seen from them both…on offense…henry and jehhuu…only because clowny has been injured…just my 2 cent…
I know it’s been only preseason play against 2nd and 3rd teamers, but Dwight Lowery could be The Truth.
A lot of scouts and experts called him a “steal” for the Jets and if you check back on some of the posts Basset & Co listed about him, he has quite a moving story as well.
If he excels soon, we are locked in with two great CBs in him and Revis.
i didn’t mention lowery because i feel he’s on the team…
im routing for clowney who knows what is gonna happen to this guy
CODY SPENCER(and heres why)….is ONE of SIX JETS(3 other veterans & 3 first year players) who have recorded 2 or more SACKS in a preseason game(sacked colt brennan TWICE in 4th quater) in the last TEN years! SPENCER is the FIRST JET LB to do it since MO LEWIS did it against PHILLY in 1999.
Wallace Wright. He is gonna make the team but I love him and I want him to suceed.
I also want a James dearth jersey
Brett Ratliff. Or is he presumed to already be on the team?
Yeah Rich, I think Brett Ratliff has the 3rd QB spot as a minimum.
There is nothing more useless on the JETS than a second string FB. Marcus Henry is a much better choice.
Richie Anderson, Jerald Sowell and BJ Askew were all second string FBs that became solid starters. (For Askew, although most would agree he didn’t do much as a Jet, he was a pro bowl alternate last year). Doesn’t that sound like the type of guy we should keep around when the starter is almost in his forties?
Caulcrick could also be the best short yardage back on the roster.
At least one of Henry or Smith surely has to be there. Every other receiver is less than 6′2″ (unless you count Keller as a WR).
I don’t think there is a chance Brad Smith would get cut since he has started the preseason games on first team as 3rd WR.
He may not be a great receiver but he is a threat when he gets the ball and that is why they keep him.
It doesn’t seem that they can keep all the WRs though and I think Wright will make it over Henry.
How about the RBs? Musa Smith may be released but it would be nice to keep him for depth.
David Ball
